This review is for Jorge's crispy chicken tacos. They are MIGHTY tasty. Definitely some of my favorite around. Order at the counter and get in line. A couple tables inside & a couple outside.Some of the pieces of chicken were a bit on the big side. Otherwise yum!!! No shortage of goodies loaded into these tacos! MESSY to eat! Spicy salsa. This most recent order I got the chicken soup which I have done for years and the broth is fine, but the chicken was raw. There was hardly any rice and the rice that was in there was stale...which I didn't even think was possible in soup. Was In the area and wanted some Mexican food so of course I had to come to yelp for some help . This place seemed to have good reviews so I gave it a try . I called up the number to place an order so it would hopefully be ready by the time I got there . The gentleman on the phone was very nice , he gave me my order number and told me it would be about 8 mins . I pulled up and saw a steady amount of people coming in and out so I was stoked I'd found "the spot". Told him I was there for my number and he printed out a receipt and I paid my bill . The wait time was definitely over 8 mins as I saw people leaving who had come before me leave with their food . I was waiting very patiently until I couldn't anymore . I politely asked if mine was ready and it seemed it had been sitting there and he didn't see it . I figured the food would be worth the wait so I wasn't even really that bothered . I get home and open the lid and see my rolled tacos. They looked decent but I've seen better presentation before . My 1st bite was ok but dang , the meat inside was DRY! I still ate them of course but they definitely weren't the best rolled tacos I've had . I would probably try this place one more time and hope next time it's better quality . enjoyed the rolled tacos at the Oceanside location so much when the family was in Encinitas the next week and craving fast-Mex, JORGE's MEXICATESSEN was an easy pick. the wife-unit had her usual, a BEAN and CHEESE BURRITO with an egg add. I had a RELLENO BURRITO (poblano chili stuffed with cheese, dipped in an egg batter and deep fried) that already came with beans and cheese, and I added rice. unlike every other relleno burrito I've had, this one came "wet" on the inside with a ladle of enchilada-like sauce. yeah, no pictures. if you've seen one wrapped burrito, you've pretty much seen 'em all and "quick peeks under the hood" are just gross. the boy had the MACHACA PLATE, a Tex-Mex style scramble with sautéed onions and bell peppers like fajitas made with ropes of dried beef. I'm done with this place. Been coming here for years, but the food and service has gone consistently down, while the prices have gone consistently up. Not to mention the bad attitude of the younger guy that takes your order. Recently ordered two soups with white chicken meat, and one Cali burrito for pickup. Don't get me wrong the food here is good but the service sucks, I get they close @8 so I been calling since 7:30pm and no answer and I get it ! Restaurants can get pretty busy, especially on the weekends. So when I showed up, it was pretty empty and I assumed I might've gotten the wrong number because nobody ever answered my 9 calls. So when I walked in, I called her phone ring. And I asked why don't you guys pick up? The young man told me because they stopped taking phone orders at 7:30. Nowhere on the website says that and like I told him just because it's polite and courtesy so the person doesn't keep calling and calling answer and be like sorry we stopped taking phone orders if you'd like food you have to come in before we close. This Mexican joint has changed hands a couple times since I have been around and during the pandemic it became Jorge's. We frequent here just to pick up the house made guacamole which is blended (not thick) and perfect for pouring over anything. Yum. We have tried the tacos, burritos and soup. It's all been good. My sister and I have eaten here three times while visiting our mother in the hospital across the street and the food has always been excellent and what we expect and look forward to at a mexican restaurant. In particular, we especially liked that the enchilada sauce actually has chili powder to give it a spicy mexican flavor and the tacos have mexican guacamole at no extra charge. The chicken soup is outstanding with big pieces of chicken, fresh onions and avocado, and the spicier version is even better. The chimichanga is HUGE and the included enchilada sauce on top makes it even better. I didn't see them offering warm corn tortilla chips (dusted with chili powder) and will recommend they add this to their menu. Every combination plate has large portions of food and you will definitely leave full and satisfied. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I was told their food was great! 3 of us went there at 7:20. they close 8. we placed our order, it was approximately 70$. I felt a little bad because we arrived a little lat. so generously I gave them a large tip. well i got what I didn't order! my food was cold!!! took it back. guess what cold again! the 2 other people I was with said same thing! I never do reviews! I just have to say this experience sucked.... Best Torta we had on our trip to San Diego, by a mile. Guac was divine and the carne asada was the stuff of dreams. Totally a five star Torta. Mega messy, so be warned. Does get 4 stars though, the Horchata was super weak, like not even Klass good. So that was dissappinting. I was in the Encinitas area this afternoon and I wanted a quick, small lunch since I planned on cooking a large dinner tonight. I searched my trusty Yelp app and came across Jorge's Mexicatessen. They have many offerings on their menu, and all at cheap prices! I got two carnitas soft tacos for $2.00 each, I asked for sour cream to be added onto it. The tacos were the perfect size for me and really tasty! There was one bite of pork fat that was soooo good haha! I noticed that their takeout containers are compostable and it said on the box that it composts into soil after 90 days, pretty cool! Service was great too! The young gentleman working the register was nice and he had a great personality. Good place to go to get delicious tacos! read more

Yes, the soup is very good. There are a few places that do an excellent chicken soup, and I can add this to the list, however I wouldn't put it at the top of said list. The consommé is very clean, unlike other places known for their mexican soup. So if you're looking for a delicious chicken soup without all the fat globules floating on top, this should be your first choice. The only reason I rate this place a 4 is because of this soup. Now for the not-so-good...The street tacos were very minimal in preparation and not very exciting. I also has a crispy taco that was hard as a rock and not very fun to eat. The bean and cheese burrito was fine but isn't winning any awards. And their salsa tasted store-bought. If they could up their game on the remaining stuff on the menu, this place would be a great restaurant. I'll come back and try a few more things but for now going one-for-five isn't good. read more

Pains me to write this as I really appreciate Alex and the family ownership of Jorges and Rauls shack, but the service at the location on el camino real is terrible. And David needs to go. How is it possible to order two items, pay and pickup the order, and drive home and find out you dont have what you ordered and paid for??? Incompetent David, thats how. While i get that mistakes are made and its on the customer to double check and open the bag and go through the entire order to make sure youve got the right stuff, you would think that two items wouldnt require added attention, right?? When i had to call and ask what happened, the response was completely inadequate and when I asked to speak with the manager, this clown, David started laughing at me.. And told me he WAS the manager. So let me begin by saying that we raised our kids on Jorge's. When my daughter visits now from out-of-state, it's one of her first stops. It is an old friend. I can't remember how many times we have said to ourselves at the end of a long day's work, "Let's get Jorge's." But the dirty little secret is that this location, the original Jorge's--and the one I've been patronizing since the 90's--hasn't been owned by Jorge for a number of years (the Santa Fe location is run by the founder and his family). Everything appears the same: the look of the place, the menu and the hometown-hole-in-the-wall vibe. And frequently it IS the same--or close enough to make no never mind. But sometimes, it is not. The food doesn't quite make the grade. The tacos are haphazardly thrown together and end up a leaky mess. The carnitas and carne asada can be too dry. Worst of all, their signature chicken soup does not have that umami broth that heals all ills. And at these times, Jorge's offerings seem more like industrial grade fare. To be sure, sometimes things are fine. But given this self-titled "Mexicatessen's" history, it should be fine not sometimes, but most of the time. Lastly, I have to say that on my last visit for lunch, my order was quite deliberately begun after two patrons behind me--apparently well-known to the cashier--had gotten priority. No bueno. It used to be that Jorge would send one of his nephews to maintain quality (to say nothing of his own reputation), but I haven't seen him or any other familia lately. And as the saying goes, dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres. So as an old patron, who wants you to live up to a great legacy, let me gently say: you're dropping the ball. read more
