    Rolled tacos
    Shauna W.

Was In the area and wanted some Mexican food so of course I had to come to yelp for some help . This place seemed to have good reviews so I gave it a try . I called up the number to place an order so it would hopefully be ready by the time I got there . The gentleman on the phone was very nice , he gave me my order number and told me it would be about 8 mins . I pulled up and saw a steady amount of people coming in and out so I was stoked I'd found "the spot". Told him I was there for my number and he printed out a receipt and I paid my bill . The wait time was definitely over 8 mins as I saw people leaving who had come before me leave with their food . I was waiting very patiently until I couldn't anymore . I politely asked if mine was ready and it seemed it had been sitting there and he didn't see it . I figured the food would be worth the wait so I wasn't even really that bothered . I get home and open the lid and see my rolled tacos. They looked decent but I've seen better presentation before . My 1st bite was ok but dang , the meat inside was DRY! I still ate them of course but they definitely weren't the best rolled tacos I've had . I would probably try this place one more time and hope next time it's better quality . But again , the staff is very nice.

It's been a while since I've been able to get some soup from Jorges... it was better than I remember!! So much chicken and flavor, I definitely won't wait that long to go back!! Sooo good!!

MACHACA plate with rice and refried beans

enjoyed the rolled tacos at the Oceanside location so much when the family was in Encinitas the next week and craving fast-Mex, JORGE's MEXICATESSEN was an easy pick. the wife-unit had her usual, a BEAN and CHEESE BURRITO with an egg add. I had a RELLENO BURRITO (poblano chili stuffed with cheese, dipped in an egg batter and deep fried) that already came with beans and cheese, and I added rice. unlike every other relleno burrito I've had, this one came "wet" on the inside with a ladle of enchilada-like sauce. yeah, no pictures. if you've seen one wrapped burrito, you've pretty much seen 'em all and "quick peeks under the hood" are just gross. the boy had the MACHACA PLATE, a Tex-Mex style scramble with sautéed onions and bell peppers like fajitas made with ropes of dried beef. JORGE's MEXICATESSEN is standard fast-Mex done well.

    Ham Torta

We ordered a ham torta and a chimichanga- the latter was large enough to feed two adults or three kids! Everything was delicious and fresh.

Don't get me wrong the food here is good but the service sucks, I get they close @8 so I been calling since 7:30pm and no answer and I get it ! Restaurants can get pretty busy, especially on the weekends. So when I showed up, it was pretty empty and I assumed I might've gotten the wrong number because nobody ever answered my 9 calls. So when I walked in, I called her phone ring. And I asked why don't you guys pick up? The young man told me because they stopped taking phone orders at 7:30. Nowhere on the website says that and like I told him just because it's polite and courtesy so the person doesn't keep calling and calling answer and be like sorry we stopped taking phone orders if you'd like food you have to come in before we close. SO How hard is that to do ????

Good soup, good service, good places to park, good ambiance, very tinny place, very tinny menu. A little expensive for a chicken soup.

Ask the Community - Jorge's Mexicatessen

    Is the soup gluten free?

Yes except for the flour tortilla which is optional.

Do you work with any delivery apps?

No, I'm just a local customer.

Does their chicken soup have rice in it?

Yes- it has rice in it. However, just order without it if you'd prefer! Best part is the fresh avocado slices on top of the soup, yummy!

I ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos and a house coffee. The coffee was actually pretty good! Cream and sugar were delivered separately to finish with your preference. As for the tacos, it was okay. The fish was a bit dry for my liking, cabbage could have been chopped with more finesse, and I wished they QC'd their limes a bit before putting them on the plate. Both were bone dry and I had to ask for more. Moreover, the cilantro lime rice was also a bit bland. It needed salt to lift the flavors in my opinion. There weren't even flecks of green if it was supposed to be cilantro? I tried boyfriend's veggie hash but was disappointed to find that it was almost all potatoes. Having said that, it was an extremely generous portion so he was filled up. While I didn't try it, our friend that had the chorizo hash also said it was okay so I'm guessing the ratio wasn't quite right. Anyways, ask for their chili sauce on the side, that's actually quite surprising. It had really good heat and was more like a chili crisp than a vinegary hot sauce. The plates that did score favorably at the table were the carne chilaquiles and the divorced eggs.

Luckily we were given the tip to try El Nopalito which is located just off the northbound Santa Fe Drive exit on the 5. You might want to look at google maps if you don't know the area which is in an older somewhat run down strip mall. Don't let that fool you though, appearances can be deceiving. Indise El Nopalito is clean and fairly large, probably seating around sixty. The kitchen can be viewed from where you order, which I like. We ordered nothing but tacos for starters to see what we liked, they have 21 types of tacos on the menu, so we chose Carnitas, Carne Asada, and El Pastor. Good choices all, freshly made, well seasoned, great toppings and big portions. The two of us were almost full just eating the three tacos. But no, we wanted more, so we ordered the Mole Oaxaca (Red Mole) which was excellent. A very complex taste with cinnamon and chile. Three tacos and the mole finished us. The service was friendly and prompt and I enjoyed sitting there because there was much to see. When we walked in it was a few minutes before noon. We were really surprised because there were about thirty high school students there mostly having sodas and tacos. Within ten minutes they all disappeared to go back to school. The restaurant was almost empty for a few minutes and then many Mexican Landscape Workers came for lunch. At one point there were over twenty people in line and the restaurant was full! This all in the space of fifteen minutes. They did not order tacos, but the daily specials, stews, soups, etc. They were friendly too and there was a great atmosphere. We were impressed by the taste of the food, the great selection, and all we saw. Ignore my other reviews for Mexican restaurants in the Encinitas/Leucadia area, this is our new favorite! We will try to be there about 11:40 again.
