Milton's deli has absolutely the best hot pastrami and Reuben sandwiches outside of New York! In fact, the hot pastrami on rye I ordered today is as delicious as Katz Deli in Manhattan! It melts in your mouth without the least bit of rubbery texture from being over-steamed. The flavor is delicious, and the rye bread is the best I've ever eaten in my life! Dined on a Tuesday at noon with my 2 year old nephew. What went well: service was friendly and they were kid friendly. Why the low rating? We ordered a kids pot pie which the menu states comes with a side and beverage (chose mashed potatoes and milk) and a half sandwich and soup with a diet coke and a small black and white cookie to go. Food did come out promptly but we were overwhelmed with flies that it was unpleasant to eat in the dining room. Despite having fans on the table to try and keep them away, they were so plentiful and landed on us constantly that my 2 year old nephew was able to kill one just trying to shoo them away with a napkin! If this is what the dining room is like I can't imagine the kitchen situation. It was so unpleasant that we asked for boxes shortly after getting the food and just ate the soup in the restaurant. The food runner commented that my nephew was served an adult pot pie instead of a kids pot pie so I didn't say anything about his missing side (and he had decided he only wanted my soup anyways). When we got the bill I noticed that I had been charged for the kids milk (3.50 for a kids drink and then another 2.25 for milk so 5.75 total). When pointed out that it said drinks were ncluded in the kids menu she told me that actually weren't but did take it off my bill this time. Our total with tax and tip was over 50 dollars for a kids meal, half a chicken salad sandwich, soup, a cookie, and a single diet coke (no refill was offered and priced at 5.25 by itself). I remember decades ago, when Milton's, Del Mar would offer a bread basket to start your meal with cinnamon raisin egg bread, followed by all the great garlic dills you could eat.  Really good pickles, like Bubbies but even better. Now THAT was two reasons to come back. (Anything in the bread basket, like extra buns or bread was ours to keep and take home). Milton's can be Milton's again! I do hope the new owners (by the way there are new owners) get to read this. While I know bread and pickles costs the owners money, think about what they pay for advertising and their $5 off coupons. Instead, give the patrons something for nothing that is absolutely memorable.  Ok. Food wise, the regular corned beef is improved. Even if you forget to order lean, it's lean enough, not totally fatty like it was before. There are lots of menu options. I'm glad they've narrowed the menu down to be less overwhelming. It's my job, in these reviews, to tell our eaters and readers what to order when you go. I always have soup with a half a sandwich. Matzoh Ball Soup. Always good. Corned beef on rye. I grew up in New York. To me, it's just comfort food. I have a friend who regularly orders and loves the turkey plate, with stuffing, cranberry sauce, veggies and more.  Cranberry sauce, coleslaw and other portions are now skimpy. They used to use small white bowls and fill them. Driving up I-5 in Southern California from San Diego to Carlsbad happened upon Milton's deli. What a gem first time to eat here and pure coincidence but what a treat. The hostess sat sat us promptly and our server was right there. He was not overbearing but took care of all our needs even anticipating the to go boxes without us having to ask for them. Our food came out quickly and was fabulous the Uber stuffed corned beef on fresh rye and the bigger than life Rueben were fantastic. The corned beef just melted in your month. New owners. I'm on the fence between three and four stars for this review. Greek omelette was good. I would give it four stars. Challah was pretty good but it was on the burnt side a little. I really ordered from here because I wanted breakfast for dinner, and that included hashbrowns. And the hashbrowns are pretty sad looking! They look like someone sliced a potato instead of grating it, and they were soggy rather than crisp. I wouldn't say they were awful, but this is what's keeping me from giving four stars. When people order hashbrowns they want crispy deliciousness. And this was some chopped potatoes that also needed some more salt. If you want fries, the $24.50 sandwich becomes $27.50. I'm not cheap, but for the quantity and quality it's just not a good value. Well established restaurant with friendly service. Large parking lot but it's tight and busy. Sunday around lunch was a steady stream of customers. Matzo ball soup was well seasoned and delicious if that's your jam. Chicago beef needed mayo for personally and a little more salt but was enjoyed by three people who shared. Fries were double fried and crunchy but not greasy. I enjoyed the potato salad. Pastrami tasted fresh and so much better than store bought deli pastrami. Rye bread was good and not dry! Unfortunately went 0 for 2 on experiences here. I'll explain below, but honestly the location is nice and the menu is attractive but just falls flat on delivery and service. Food (1/5) - First, my wife stopped by a week ago while nearby shopping and thought the french dip was good enough to bring another home to-go for me. They forgot the dip in the order, the key core component of the french dip. The plain sandwich was decent enough that we happened to be nearby again today - gave them a second try only to yet again have issues with service/orders and most importantly taste. Was recommended the pastrami "cheesesteak" but it just didn't have much flavor and was pretty dry - the Chicago dog we got wasn't much better. Sides are fine, crispy chips/fries, coleslaw was really liquid-y, but the potato salad was pretty great after i was finally served it, needing to ask 3 or 4 times. Another key point is we paid $50 for a cheesesteak and a single hotdog and some sides, just not worth the steep cost i think. Maybe I need to order just the things labeled FAMOUS. Service (2/5) - Host lady was really nice/funny, but the service was just alright. wasn't really sure if we had 1 set server as we had like 4 different people bring us or order us different things, all just to have them forget an item for a while anyway and then not get extra water or napkins until the end of the meal. A promotional discount to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of this Jewish bakery/deli/restaurant in North County was what brought me to Milton's. It's likely one of the OG tenants at the Flower Hill Promenade in Del Mar. From the outside, the architecture of the building was unusual, almost resembling an art gallery. The shared parking lot had ample spaces to park close enough to the business. You did have to descend a set of steps or use the external lift to reach the main entrance that was below ground level. The bakery and deli were to the left when you walked in while the dining room was to the right. The menu was a booklet that spanned six pages. Breakfast and beverages were on the first two pages; appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and soups were listed on the middle two pages; and the final two pages displayed the dinners, entrees, hot sandwiches, and desserts. As part of my coupon, I had to order a drink so I chose a lemonade. The Roasted Turkey Dinner was the choice for my meal. Several slices of turkey breast were served on top of a bed of stuffing with creamy mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables on the side. A cup of brown gravy and a cup of cranberry sauce were also provided. The white meat was a bit dry which was not unusual when restaurants serve this cut of turkey. The rest of the plate was classic comfort food. The potatoes had chunks in them to give texture. The veggies were cooked to the right degree. The portion size was decent for the price. Initially, the service was a bit choppy as there seemed to be only one worker to cover the entire dining room. As the number of customers dwindled, then the waitress was more on point. Went today (Saturday) at 11:00 am with our party of 7. It's located right off the 5 freeway at the (very busy) Flower Hill Mall. Parking was challenging. So I'm glad I was wearing my sneakers. Walking in, the bakery at the entrance was busy but thankfully we were able to get seated right away. The hostess was super friendly and helpful. The menu was vast. So many options for breakfast/lunch/dinner that's served all day! Most of us chose the 1/2 sandwich & soup which we ALL thoroughly enjoyed. I had the pastrami on rye with the turkey chili. The pastrami was meaty & moist, the turkey chili tasted homemade and full-flavored, and the potato salad was creamy. Located in the Via De La Valle center, with free parking. The building has the stair lift to help the physically impaired. Outdoor and indoor seating. The next day, ordered the Super Reuben sky high sandwich which is the top seller and onion rings, both were excellent. Service by the hostess, waiter and servers was attentive, nice and expedient. During Rosh Hashanah this deli, like all others gets crowded and sometimes there's a wait. I visited after the rush crowd and service and the ambiance was pleasant. This place was just ok. I went for a repast. It was held in the back room. I was using a walker but decided not to use it. I walked down the somewhat steep stairs. There's like this lift thing that can bring you down which a friend did. She was able to use her walker inside. We ordered whatever we wanted and the food came back in 10 minutes . All fifteen people that never happens at restaurants. The pickles were great the food was so-so. I won't be back it wasn't my cup of tea and that's ok and that's my opinion in my review. They have a few tables outside but most were inside. They have a case of desserts in the deli area. We've been wanting to try out Milton's for a while. It's a large restaurant with a homey feel. There are multiple TVs to watch sports games. We ordered some sandwiches with a side of Matzo ball soup. The taste was decent but not outstanding. The turkey sandwich was extremely dry. I wasn't expecting the sandwich to be just meat. They were generous with meat but it's not very pleasant to eat just dry meat and bread. We also had an open faced sandwich with beef which was a lot juicier on its own but also came with au jus. I am not sure what happened to this place, maybe new ownership? I'm just guessing at this point, but I went there today with my sister and my boyfriend, and it was awful from the moment we walked in. The place was completely dead, which shocked me since it's always been really busy the other times that I've come. We stood at the hostess podium for just under 10 minutes until finally somebody asked if anybody had helped us. Mind you, maybe 10 employees walked by us not to mention there's the deli counter with people who work there seeing us standing and not being helped. So finally we get seated and for some reason they take us to the complete back of the restaurant next to the door that I have to assume is where they take out trash. There was a table of what looked to be about 20 back there so it was super loud to just sit the three of us next to them. The guy that brought us the table was nice enough to get us drinks, but then we sat for another 10 minutes with employees passing us left and right again to get to where I'm assuming is the break area yeah nobody making enough eye contact to see if there's anything that we need. Then the food... The matzoh ball soup was just as delicious as I remember, but everything else was blah. My sister's omelette was just OK, and my boyfriend and I got half corn beef sandwiches and the meat was completely tasteless and overcooked and it was not hot even though we ordered it hot. I don't know if it's sat in the back for too long before it was brought to us or what the deal was, but the meat itself was rubbery and dry and tasteless. Needless to say, I will never be returning. The matzo ball wasn't too dense. The chicken broth tastes homemade with a few pieces of sliced carrots. We had their adult mac and cheese, I may pass on this one. I subbed sourdough for their rye bread and had no regrets. I added some sweet potato fries which came with ranch sauce. They do not skimp on the sandwich fillings. The meat was sliced thin and the quality is there. Save room for dessert, their banana pudding is divine! We've had the corned beef sandwich, corn beef, hash, and potato latkes. The corned beef sandwich was excellent, although I do agree that some other restaurants probably give a little bit larger portion, especially for the price. But it was absolutely delicious and exactly what we came for. The corn beef hash was also excellent. It is the ground up style, versus the chopped up style that many restaurants use. Used to love Milton's but the last few times haven't been great and the last visit was unacceptable. They all-in salad was just a bowl of inedible mediocre stuff. They replaced it with a hot pastrami sandwich not toasted, wrong side, and fatty. I went to the time, trouble and effort to have them convert me to the new reward program then the waiter forgot to credit me for the meal. Nothing they could do about it. I stopped at Milton's to get a deli sandwich. The place was empty with maybe one customer seated and no one at the deli counter. I thought, "Great. I should get my order quickly since I'm the only customer at the deli. I ordered a blt sandwich to go. After I ordered two other customers came, ordered, got their orders and left. After 10 minutes I asked about my order. They assured me it was being worked on. 15 minutes I asked again. They were just finishing it up. After more than 20 I finally got my blt. Once I got to the car I discovered there was no mayo. Aren't blt's supposed to have mayo. It was the driest sandwich I've had since getting a sandwich at the airport. And those sandwiches included a packet of mayo and mustard. On top of that it was over $20 with a canned soda. Monday, 2-24-2025: My husband and I stopped here for lunch en route to UCSD Med Center in La Jolla. We had passed here many times on our way to the SD Fair every year. I knew that Milton's made great bread but never thought to stop here in the past. But, I'm glad we did this time. Parking was tight but we were able to secure a handicapped parking spot. They share parking space with a few other stores with Whole Foods anchoring this plaza. No wonder there is a parking scarcity. The entrance was interesting as there were stairs that descended to the double door; there is an outdoor dining area to the left. There was a mini elevator to the right of the steps for people in wheel chairs, walkers, etc. what a nice & thoughtful feature for convenient accessibility. We were greeted so warmly by the hostess as we entered & we were seated right away in a comfy, spacious booth. I was impressed with the architectural details like the high ceilings and the interesting wall decor like the huge clock & various photos. It had vibes of yesteryear that evoked nostalgia & comfort. Bryant was our shy & efficient server, who took great care of us. Hubby ordered the BLT with potato salad and I had the Teriyaki Chicken Bowl. What was I thinking? This is not an Asian eatery! I should have ordered a sandwich since they seem to be known for that & they had such a huge variety! Their menu was extensive. We used to be regulars here, but after a bad experience a few months ago with a cold meat loaf which is a health hazard, we stopped coming. We came back today and we regret it. Terrible coordination between server and kitchen. Our waitress tried her best to please us but the kitchen made several mistakes. The chicken soup came cold. Health hazard. After it was reheated, it was salty. The pea soup tasted sour. A half turkey bagel was sent out instead of a whole one. The waitress truly tried her best. On the way to a media session, my husband and I found this legendary gem....we were blown away by the quality of food and the exceptionally friendly staff. Honest to God, the best Rueben Sandwich I have ever had in my life . The Sandwich came with a side of potato salad that was perfection...savory in flavor with crisp and flavorful fries. We were so impressed we decided to take our two daughters there the following weekend for breakfast only to add to our fascination with this place. The breakfast was AMAZING! Then, we decided to take the whole fam here again for Sunday Breakfast and met the owners (didn't know they were the owners) but Barry is a legend.
