Roberto Mexican Cafe is spot on Mexican cuisine. All the sauces and spices are exactly what you would experience South of the Border! They have many authentic dishes to choose from including many vegetarian options. I love the Carne Asada Burrito and a side of Refried Beans! Very filling and large enough to share. The price is affordable and worth every penny. You won't leave hungry, in fact you will leave extremely full! The little cafe reminds me of a quaint Mexican cafe in Mexico! Visiting Carlsbad is always special for our family. On this visit, for convenience sake, we ordered delivery from a new-to-us Mexican restaurant. All around a hit for our group. Loves the kids meal options and my husband enjoyed his surf and turf burrito. I devoured the carne asada nachos. Our boys shared the carne asada plate and it was a generous portion they were able to share with leftovers. Always fresh, always great service when ordered by phone or in person. The loaded breakfast burrito is the best by far, but truly everything else I've had is really good. we walked here from the hotel a few mins walk... 3 min way..... not wanting to eat at pricey hotel again. David helped us and was amazing in his manor and kindness. This young man should be a Mgr. at least. food was a four star but he makes it a 5 all by himself. I loved the green sauce(hot) !!! we had a nice dinner in our room with NO regrets. This become a tourist trap? WAY overpriced and half the size of others. Pros: Burritos on the beach is easy, within walking distance. Food was OK, exact same you get at other mex restaurants. Cons: $17 for a burrito? Same price for sit down restaurant that give you sides. Half the size of places like Cotixan up the road. Chips and guac for $10 was like a single servicing of chips, with 8oz guac but it wasn't Hass, actually tasted like the frozen wholly guacamole product. Don't expect to eat inside on a winter evening, place barely has standing room only. LOTS of Mex restaurants in the area, try Kotija or Cotixan, both way better options. read more

I ordered the Chile Relleno burrito avocado. It comes with rice and enchilada sauce. I added avocado and refried beans. The chile relleno was cooked perfect with just the right amount of cheese. Food was terrible. Extremely bland and oily. Adobada was mostly fat. Asked for flower tortillas but got corn. During payment the cashier Selena kept looking how much I was going to tip and that determined how she was going to treat me. She was extremely rude after. The salsas were good though. read more

I come here at least once a week. Their California burrito is always consistent and very delicious -- I highly recommend adding guacamole! Their carne asada fries are also fantastic. I visited the Carlsbad state beach for a family picnic but forgot that I was supposed to pack food. I quickly went to Yelp and found this burrito joint open at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Lucky for me, it was not lunchtime, so the place was empty. I ordered a couple of breakfast burritos and California burritos to go. I saw that they had coffee on the menu and decided to order that too. It turns out they have a Keurig machine for coffee. The burritos were good even though we ate them after 2 hours as a beach picnic lunch. I will order again when I visit the beach and when it's my turn to pack the picnic lunch. read more

I tell myself, many times, I wont come back as its hit and miss. I should have just gone to In n Out. I got a CA burrito. It was cold. F***ing cold. Cold cheese unmelted... meat barely warm... a cold tortilla. I have been coming here since I was a teenager. I am over 50. What a joke. Just had to come back hours later. What a bunch of buffoons the cooks... and I can speak Spanish. Somebody needs to tale Natalia by the hand and plead for pride in their work. Since the construction of the hotel and the "gentrification" of Leucadia her business has seen a lot more revenue. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I have been jonesing for Mexican food since I have been out of the country for several weeks. Bland chicken, bland pico de gallo and bland guacamole. I asked and paid extra for pinto beans and got bland refried. Friends had crispy tacos that were dripping with grease. Their shredded beef and and chicken were also bland. I love Mexican food but this was just plain sad. Two taco plates and a burrito with 3 mineraguas was $60. The ladies working in the front and in the kitchen were nice. But I wouldn't go back even if you paid me. read more

Rolled tacos always taste better in Southern California. The order of three was crunchy and topped with decent guac and cojita cheese and alot of lettuce. Eat these with a view of the ocean and you can't go wrong. We also had some good breakfast burritos for about $6 each. You can get the Mexican scramble and add whatever you want - in my case hash browns and also bacon in another person's. The fresh pico de gallo really made this burrito burst with flavor, plus the green sauce has alot of flavor when added on top. The front service girl in the AM was really sweet and the burrito's were a good start to the day. read more

This place is amazing!! We ordered dinner last Sunday. I was surprised how busy they were when we walked in and I am glad I decided to give them a shot. I have been ordering food around but this place is a winner. Roberto's has one of the best California burritos in North County. Delicious offerings and a convenient location this is a great spot to grab a bite. The staff here are super friendly and get you the food quick, love these guys. Home of the original Carne Asada Burrito, Roberto's Taco Shop has been feeding southwest California with authentic Mexican food since 1964. We started out as a tortilla shop, but as we grew over the decades, we began getting recognized for our filling breakfast burritos and fresh fish tacos. With a kid's menu and a casual atmosphere, we're the perfect place for the whole family to unwind after a day at the beach or get energized in the morning with a Roberto's breakfast. Established in 1964.

Believe it or not, Roberto's got started with tortillas. In 1964, San Diegan Roberto Robledo opened a tortilla shop in San Ysidro just to make ends meet. It was a true family affair with his five sons and daughters helping out daily. Today, Roberto's is known as the original Mexican taco shop by many and has become a strong community icon in the north coastal area of San Diego. Locals, beachgoers, and many tourists start feasting on burritos in the morning and feast on through lunch and dinner.

AVOID THIS RESTAURANT!! Severely undercooked food ordered from DoorDash. They seem to only care about money and disregard customer satisfaction. I've visited several times over the last 15+ years and it's so forgettable that I literally forgot it existed for years. I can go on and on about how they disregard food quality but I'm sure you get the picture. I'm surprised they are still in business to be honest. Big hotel being built very close I would imagine that if there was any time to appreciate customers and strive for a great reputation it would be now. I'm sure many of the good reviews come from people who have low standards themselves or locals trying to be nice and support but from my perspective they are not addressing actual customer complaints. Long story short, I'm sure they will read this and act concerned but they should focus on refining core values around customer experience and quality. They definitely have some potential as do most struggling restaurants, but as of now they are nothing special. read more

Purchased a to go order of carne asada burrito with a side of rice. Was given 3 options for size of side of rice: 2 oz; 4oz; 8oz. I ordered the 4 oz. Got home and found a smaller white container of rice than expected. I weighed the container of rice on a food scale. It weighed 2.25 oz. I called Robertos and spoke to the employee who informed me that the white container I got was the 4oz one. I told her it only weighed 2 oz with rice in it. She said that was their 4 oz one. I stopped by Robertos the next day and they have a display showing the 3 options of rice containers labeled with 2/4/8 oz. They are totally misleading customers. They need to redo the labels as small medium and large or give the customer the actual amount of food listed. read more

I'm a Roberto's connoisseur and this location is by far my favorite. Today I had the asada nachos and it's huge....enough for 3 people. The salsa fresco they put on top is so fresh and flavorful, laden with cilantro, onions, tomatoes with a huge dollop of guac and sour cream and all that yummy melted cheese. It tasted like poor quality avocados were used; it had that weird rotten fruit taste that low quality avocado variants often have. The beef taco was good with a nice portion. The fish tacos had a nice flavor, but there was barely any fish in them and one of my tacos had a bone that hurt my tooth. The potato taco was flavorless and definitely the worst of the tacos. My husband said his California burrito was 4/5 and my kids seemed to like their kids meals (though I ordered the quesadilla only for each of them and was given the more expensive plate with rice and beans, which they don't like, so I was charged for food I didn't order and didn't want...).

The addition of a huge glop of chipotle cream, whatever that is, and sour cream, turns this dish almost into a soup. And that is a shame. The chips themselves underneath this pool of goop are delicious and extremely crunchy until the sea of cream deteriorates them. I am also unsure what kind of cheese attached itself to these chips. While I personally love both real and fake cheese, I am not sure the cheesy stuff in these nachos originated on Planet Earth. It was weird. The Crack itself was fine but had no chance of competing against all these goopy textures. The best nachos are simple. Use excellent chips as the base, melt real cheese on top, add a nice protein, then top with a spicy pico de gallo. Use goopy stuff sparingly so you don't swamp all those nice flavors and textures underneath. I would skip the nachos here. They aren't bad but this dish is a mess. Maybe the tacos and burritos are better. Remember: sometimes less is more.

The employees were friendly, helpful & efficient. Ivan at the bar was very nice and gave my husband a warm welcome knowing it was our first time. Every dish we ordered was off the hook! Delicious! We would expect this at a more higher end restaurant. And the salsas were also good! Very flavorful. It's cute that they served some of the food on blue and white Talavera dishes that were chipped on the edges, which made them look homey. The margaritas (they only make the standard lime flavor) were good but not a good value. Mostly all ice and not strong at all. Overall, good place to get delicious Mexican food. Was a good find!
