This is a hole in the wall taco shop. In a corner shopping center, not much to look at, down the road from the downtown Oceanside area. One thing I want to add, one of the cooks that used to work at another location off of el Camino (next to 7 eleven, closest to winco in Oceanside) works now at this location. I recognized him after maybe a decade of not seeing him. When the other location used to be called Roberto's also, my family would go, that was our go-to. If he was working you knew it was going to be a delicious bite. So I was immediately excited when I saw him. Moving on...... My family's go-tos from a fast food spot like this are burritos/quesadillas/loaded fries/loaded nachos so this review is solely on those types of foods nothing else. When I look for this type of food I'm looking for the most unhealthy, greasy/juicy, cheesy and flavorful (borderline salty) meat I can find. This place hit all the notes. This is the type of spot you want to go to for late night munchies, a drunken snack, or just because you're looking for that fast food comfort. We have our new local go-to and I'm so excited, our other go-to is closer to downtown San Diego (too far to drive every time a craving hits). One other thing I need to add......I see complaints about pricing and what not. That's a hard pill to swallow for me when your review is affected by pricing. Let's not ignore the fact that EVERYTHING has increased. They can't be any different. Their pricing is similar to many around, don't let that be the reason why you try to drag them down. I have been a regular at Robertos for over ten years and still think they are the best fast food outlet in Oceanside.

I hate to write this as this used to be my favorite Roberto's in the county. It's gone downhill. This was one of the last places with the salsa bar out that didn't charge for carrots. Salsa bar is gone and carrots are now a charge. The person at the front counter didn't say hello, didn't greet me, just stared and waited until I spoke. The bean & cheese burrito was half full (see photo) and the beans weren't salted and the tortilla tasted old. What's worse is no Roberto's in SD has guac in their Cali so it's usually safe for us allergy-wise, but they put guac here & neglect to list it. So the entire burrito was wasted and my husband had to go get food somewhere else & got a reaction. This is now as bad as some of the worse taco shops in north county. Just avoid it & go somewhere else. The Alberto's on mission Ave is worlds better & the carrots are free. read more

Stumbled across Roberto's Tacos Shop 13 while leaving SD due to having a couple of companions complaining that we forgot to pick up some Cali Burritos. There are plenty of Hispanic restaurants all over, but this was the last stop for a place ending in -berto's in Oceanside. Gotta stop at a Berto's spot while in SD of course! The lady that was taking our orders seemed friendly & fast. We ordered 7 Cali Burritos. I ordered a Surf & Turf. Our to go orders were ready in good time & bagged up with sauces. Walking back to the car I could not wait & I quickly took my Surf & Turf burrito out & bit into it. It was fresh & hot. I was curious to see if I was going to get potatoes or actual French fries in it. Yup! Hot, fresh, crunchy, just fried French fries. So Good! I was glad I was able to have a few bites. Before heading back to the 805. Burritos were huge & thick... The side sauces that came with it were different than I'm used to. One was green & one was orange. It was okay, not my favorite. But, it worked with my Surf & Turf... Leftovers were still tasty the next day & a few days after according to the recipients... I would def come back to try more off the menu the next time I'm in SD. read more

Roberto's in Oceanside is the first fast food taco shop I ever tried in the 80's. This Roberto's taco shop #13 will always have a special place in my heart. Fun fact they had a previous location in the 80-90's and moved to the current location in the 2000's! The food is still quality. The machacha platter is my absolute favorite with lots of shredded beef, grilled veggies and egg. The beef taco's are pilled full of beef, cheese and iceberg lettuce. I came in a d an angry lady was wotking the register i asked if the Guac had onions and she told me no but in a really angry way. After i got my carne asada torta i noticed they didn't slice my tarta all tge way in half so i asked for a plastic knife the employee now was an older man in his 70's who was angered because I asked for a plastic knife. This is a family owned and operated taco shop. They have been serving the Oceanside community for many years, with many loyal customers. There are several other similar shops, but none have the consistency of Robertos. Salsas are always good, pickled carrots, carne asada, Cali burrito, fish tacos, breakfast burritos, potato tacos! This isn't some sparkly, gentrified spot, this is authentic TJ style fast food, at good prices. They put up with many rude tourists and homeless population, so when you're kind, respectful and patient, (as you should be) they are the same. ;) read more

IT'S A TRAP We ordered and paid for nachos with cheese and guacamole. They gave us nachos with just cheese. When we went back the lady said "if you wanted guacamole then you should've ordered it." Even though we paid for the guacamole (that we did not receive), the lady simply said "what do you want me to do about it". Side note, my friend is hard of hearing and asked if the lady could speak louder and the lady rolled her eyes. Btw, the chips tasted like they were fried in two week old oil and the green salsa TASTED LIKE WALMART. 10/10 would not recommend. Honestly, do any of us need this negativity during a pandemic? Always looking for the best lunch taco spot. This is very close. I agree with some other yelpers that it's not fancy, but solid fresh Mexican food. I had the carnitas plate ($8.50) and it will be two meals because of huge portions and two of the biggest and best flour tortillas ever. I mean as big as your head unless your head is small, then as big as some other part of you.... Wifey had chicken enchiladas and loved them. The green sauce was excellent as advertised. Parking is easy and service was ah.... a bit cold, but quick. Maybe I'm just a newbie. All in all, great food and I'll be back to try more. And hope they put in a soda machine. read more

The best. Okay, so first ate mexican food in San Diego 30 years ago. It was this little taco shop down in Normal Heights and the most distinctive thing was the carne asada "taco". It was unlike any taco I had before, soft corn tortillas overflowing with slighly fatty steak, onions, cilantro, guacomole. And what got me was the asada - it had this gamey, slight "organ meat" quality to it that I associate with San Diego style tacos, along with hardshell shredded chicken tacos packed with shredded cheddar. Now many years ago, a string of places called Albertos was the king of this style. But over the years, I believe Roberto split off from Alberto. Today Albertos is a larger chain and seems a bit corporate, bland and too uniform in its food across its locations - everything tastes the same and safe. . Gone is the gaminess of the asada I loved so much. WHICH BRINGS ME TO THIS PLACE, Roberto's in oceanside - just simply the best as I remember it - the amazing carne asada and hard shell chicken taco, still out the door for less than 8 bucks for a ton of food and ready in five minutes. It's not bad, it's mostly just unremarkably standard Mexican but with some conspicuous disappointments that make me knock some points off. To wit, I find their hot sauces very lacking in flavor, they only contribute heat. Also the guacamole looks and tastes like a homogenous, vaguely avocado-flavored sauce, rather than having the thickness and texture you'd expect from mashed avocado. You really have to lens a five star review of a greasy, hole in the wall taco shop in a different way than you would a five star review of, say, a chic French restaurant in a nice part of town. If you're incapable of that distinction, might as well stop reading. Yelp, I mean. That said, Roberto's was on the short list of go to Mexican fast food places when I used to frequent Oceanside. Unlike in Los Angeles and other points north, where carne asada burritos contain beans, rice, and in some disgusting cases, lettuce... Here you get what is advertised: A big, translucent flour tortilla, filled with meat, pico de gallo, salsa, and maybe a little cheese. Wash down each bite with a little pour of green salsa from those little cups or their in-restaurant salsa bar, and you're eating good on the downside of drinking at Surf Bowl. Pretty hard to screw up three rolled with guacamole, but Roberto's does these better than many. A big Styrofoam cup of fountain drink Coca-Cola washes it all down too. Yes, the tables have remnants of the guy that was eating there before you, and the color scheme is reminiscent of a 1974 Arby's... but I have a special place in my heart for this little hole in the wall, and probably always will. Lots of great memories when I was half my current age, and weekends involved surfing, karaoke, barhopping, and more surfing. You got to grow up sometime... But nobody said I had to stop eating cheap burritos. ... Except my gastroenterologist... But that's a different review. read more
