This place did not live up to the hype. 30 minutes in line to order 4 tacos. 45 minutes waiting for our order, and it was honestly a very MID taco restaurant. There was better. I will say it truly depends on what you get. Carne Asada Tacos just had too much guac and couldn't really taste the meat as much, I'd give this a rating of 7.2. Sonora Taco definitely had a bit more flavor and really impressed me. I'd give this a rating of 8.4. Surf and Turf (special menu) really stole the show. The shrimp with carne asada were absolutely delicious. If I were to ever come back here, it would be for their shrimp or surf and turf taco. I'd give this a rating of 8.8.

Came here for a quick bite over the weekend and was met with many choices on the menu between burritos and tacos. We ordered a shrimp taco (camaron), baja fish taco, sonora taco and a carne asada burritoy at the front. For drinks like soda or beer, there's a fridge by the front where you can grab your drink and pay. There was a small line when we arrived but it went by quickly. Seating was already staring to get crowded around 5 pm on a Saturday but luckily there were seats inside and out on the patio. While you wait, there's a sauce bar where you can grab onions, limes, and all the fixings. Food came out quickly and we demolished just as fast. Great to come here for a bite if you're around the area!

Met up with family for some food and beers. I had the fish shop shrimp and elote taco. Food is always delicious. These are my favorite shrimp! So delicious. Super fun spot with good ambience. It's always busy. Clean and plenty of seating. Service is always good. Parking can sometimes be tough! Street parking in a super busy town!

The Sonora, Al Pastor & Carne asada tacos are a must! The handmade tortillas and salsas are awesome too! The carne asada fries were a bit much but glad we tried them just once. The churros were good also! I would say our least favorite was the Baja Taco, only because it was so heavily fried.. couldn't taste the fish. We will definitely make it back! They have a wait everyday for a reason. Worth trying for sure!!

I love this taco place! The food is great and the prices are surprisingly low for the quality you get. They have a nice salsa bar with various sauces and toppings. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Unfortunately, it's a small place so it's hard to find a table and there is always a line. Parking is tricky too.

Big fan of The Taco Stand! My first time I went to a location in San Diego and remembered liking the salsa bar, so I had to check this one out. My friend got a burrito and I got a bunch of tacos. I will say, stick to the tacos... it's in the name, after all! The restaurant gets pretty busy, so make sure to come at an off peak time. There's plenty of space, but I'd definitely prefer the outdoor seating. Good spot!

And when i stop to get tacos, as usual, while cruising on my favorite highway, i searched and decided to check the Stand out. It made me stand in a line for half an hour. There was a good amount of stuff in the menu that I ordered to check out if the line was worth the wait. Great food it was. Plenty of seating there was. Salsa bar was an indoor line. Felt spoiled.

There's a line out the door for a reason. It's worth the wait! We ordered the carne asada tacos, Sonora tacos and a secret menu taco. Everything was delicious and flavorful without being over salted or anything like that. We ordered a side of guac and chips to enjoy while we waited for our tacos and I'd highly recommend that too. I thought everything was reasonably priced, especially for how good the food is. It's typically very busy indoors and outdoors, but make sure you don't miss the salsa bar (tucked in the back near the fountain drinks)!!

Someone recommended this place so we decided to checkout. The line was very long around 1p so we decided to come back later in the day, around 3:30p. There was still a line but not as long. There's inside and outside seating and pretty packed but tables seem to turn fairly quickly. The food did take time to come out, but it was very fresh so worth the wait.

I've been hearing about this place so I stopped to try it out. I have it a 4 star because the first taco I tried was Al Pastor. I did. It like that mix with the pineapples. It was ok. Next I tried carne Asada. This taco was really good. 5 stars. Fresh and delicious. The I had a Burrito. Carne Asada. One the best burrito I have ever eaten. Freshly made. The wait wasn't bad. Place was packed. There's a backyard too for seating.

Not a good CA burrito. Cheap ($10 bucks) but cheap quality too.

This was the 2nd time I had been to a Taco Stand, and probably the last, honestly. I just don't like it...it does nothing for me or my tastebuds. We were at Cardiff beach, and my buddy wanted a burrito that was close by. Decided to give Taco Stand a chance. I had it once before at the La Jolla location and was not that impressed. Wanted to see if it was just a "one off" or if I really didn't like it. Well.........I really didn't like it. We got CA burritos. The only positive thing I can say is that they are priced right ($10.19 which is cheap for a CA burrito). Couple problems with the burrito. #1. Tortilla wasnt that great. Soft and a little gummy. #2. Fries were mush. Straight soggy, mashed potato type consistency. #3. Meat was just ok. Its cubed up in chunks. Not bad, but I prefer thinner, more charred carne asada. #4. Salsas. Not that good. I had an avocado one which had way too much lime in it. Meh. #5. Chips. I got a bag of their tortilla chips, and you might as well buy Fritos. They tasted EXACTLY like Fritos. I was in the mood for some crispy tortilla chips, not triangle Fritos. Way too "corny" of a taste. Anyways........I ate my whole burrito but was not happy/satisfied at all. Just went through the motions. Wont ever go to a Taco Stand again. Just not my style.

GREAT food (freshly made tortillas) and great service! Food: California Burrito & it was DELICIOUS! Service: Friendly and efficient Ambiance: They have an authentic ambiance, with pesos at the register, the lettering of the menu just like you would see in Mexico and lotteria (Mexican bingo) as the numbers This place has GREAT FOOD, good ambiance and quick service!

This is hands-down my favorite spot in San Diego for tacos. While they don't serve adobada, their carne asada is the best I've had. It's one of the only places that cooks steak medium rare, and for me that's a game changer--perfectly seasoned with a nice smoky flavor. 10/10 Their al pastor is very good, 7/10 though a little hit or miss. When it's on point, the flavor is great, but sometimes it can be slightly dry. What really stands out here is their sauces: the thick green crema is incredible, and paired with the pickled onions and a fully stocked salsa bar, you can load up your tacos exactly how you like. The churro was amazing--warm, soft, fried just right, with plenty of cinnamon sugar 10/10. We also tried the surf and turf fries, which were excellent. The fries are crispy (not soggy like many places) and well-seasoned, topped with nacho cheese instead of shredded cheese--which I personally love. 10/10 Overall rating 10/10, this place almost never disappoints. The only inconsistency I've noticed is with the al pastor, but otherwise it's easily the best Mexican food spot in San Diego. Highly recommend! Service is solid, and while some locations can get busy, the atmosphere is great with plenty of seating and a rustic vibe.

The Taco Stand Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The Taco Stand

What's the go-to taco here- Al pastor or baja? Any recommendations?

    Where do you park?

Anywhere you can. Busy area especially a Friday or Saturday... not designated parking lot

Do you have the salsas and sauces available behind the counter? It seems unsanitary to have it out to get filled from everyone. Also takes a very long time to get any sauce

They have a salsa bar for everyone to get with pickled carrots in jalapeno n limes

What is the corporate headquarters phone?

I don't believe there is, on there website they have numbers for the different locations, I believe this restaurant chain was a mom and pop place that was able to be franchised and expanded and owned by different people.

Do they have anything gluten free?

Corn tortilla tacos, tacos wrapped in lettuce too!

Is there a Taco Tuesday special?

It may depend on the location, but the Encinitas one does a special. However it’s minimal, like 50 cents off tacos haha

Do they use lard in their tortillas?

We do not use lard in any of our items. Thank you!

I love everything here, but I wished they served breakfast all day. Would you change your breakfast serving hours? Your breakfast burrito is BOMB!

Have not tried the B.B., but looking for a great one. Gonna try it.

What is the name of that creamy spicy sauce you have?

The light green one is cilantro, they also have a creamy chipotle sauce which is not as spicy.

The parking lot has plentiful parking but was completely full as I was leaving around 12pm. There were tons of order pick-up spots and 20-minute max parking spots that help with the flow. The restaurant was impeccably clean with a growing line of lunch-goers. The workers were very efficient and the line moved quickly. I also noticed the apparent owner/manager talking to regulars and greeting customers as they walked in, which I really liked to see! I was served my order to-go in less than 10 minutes and ended up unexpectedly using the other 10 minutes after taking my first bite--after that it was hard to stop. The burrito was the perfect size (not too large and not too small). My original breakfast burrito was wrapped in a fresh hand-made tortilla filled with fluffy eggs, the perfect amount of bacon, cheese, soft fresh potatoes, topped with the avocado salsa verde which went perfectly with everything. I even ended up sipping the salsa (it was that good) between bites of the burrito. I was also blown away by the clean and fully stocked salsa bar. So many options (including non-spicy ones for those with gastric limitations too!) and they even offered radishes, carrots, and pickled onions individually wrapped with care. Everything tasted fresh and home-made. After 7 years being away from San Diego, Los Tacos delivered exactly what I had been missing. This location really blew me away and I will definitely be back to see what else it has to offer.

To update my old Rico review I started coming here 20+ years ago and since that review is 15 years old I have changed my mind on the Justin burrito. Why was I eating 4 different types of carbs? Why even have lettuce? Also why no sour cream since were throwing everything in the kitchen sink in there (sans meat). The justin burrito is like seeing a fat vegetarian, sorry not sorry. I think I was just eating becuase I was bored and hungry and had a fast metabolism, always eating beyond satisfied. I'd much rather eat perfect bites to a satisfying amount rather than overindulge on chasing balance. I still haven't met Justin, but my fear is after all these decades of eating these massive burritos maybe he's no longer around. The decor is mostly the same, the menu is mostly the same, the staff, etc. etc. Prices have gone up and to me more than the times. 20% on the Justin and 30+% on breakfast burritos. How is the Calidilla (quesadilla wrapped CAB) $17? i'm fairly certain the quesadilla portion isn't equal to an equivalent price increase versus the standard $7 cheese quesadilla becuase I weighed a CAB and quesadilla and the Calidilla and 1+1 does not equal 2 and the price difference isn't proportional Something that I did notice is that my usual favorite California burrito has waned. I don't think anything specifically has changed, but probably my level of love for it. I found the fries to be a little less crispy, the meat a little greasier, tortilla a litte dryer, hot sauce a little milder. The nostalgia is hard to recreate and even harder to explain to others, but alot of things were amazing just becuase I was in my early 20's. I still feel like it's not a taco shop or an ertos. I call them Mexican fast food leaning more towards a restaurant now. $13 breakfast burritos is wild.
