My family and I were looking to grab brunch while in the area for Legoland. Since we weren't familiar with the area, we turned to Yelp and found this place. There were plenty of restaurants near the beach, and as much as we would have loved to enjoy the scenery, we were limited on time and concerned about parking, so we decided to give this place a try. Honestly, we probably should have walked out as soon as we walked in. The host was not welcoming at all. He was scrolling on his phone when we entered, which by itself wasn't a huge deal, but what bothered me was that he didn't greet us or acknowledge us--he simply stared at us. I left the interaction feeling uncomfortable and, to be honest, wondered if we were being judged based on our appearance or race. There was only one server working, which I completely understand can happen when a restaurant is short-staffed. However, the server never acknowledged us or even let us know that he would be with us shortly. We eventually had to flag down the host to let him know that we were ready to order. The host told us our server will take our order. You would think the host will tell the server we were ready but nope he didn't. The server passed by our table at least five times before finally coming over. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for the lack of customer service. It was mediocre and nothing particularly special or memorable. The dishes were very basic and tasted like something that could easily be made at home. There was nothing that stood out to me. The server didn't bother to check on us to see how things were going or if we needed anything. My husband and I had brunch here on a Friday morning. We were seated inside. The tables looked clean but sticky for some reason. I ordered decaf coffee and my husband had black coffee. I ordered a make-my-own omelette (5 toppings to choose) with egg white, light Swiss cheese, spinach, mushrooms, onions, and turkey sausage w/ hash brown for my side. The family of 4 came over to the Carlbad's location for breakfast and the only one waitress they had, was on break. So it took us like 15 minutes to order, when she finally showed up, she said that they have only 1 cook and he is working on the order of 6 people, so it would put us behind on our order. Staff did not check in if I needed anything with my meal. Place was not busy at all. There were a few tables with customers but no one was requesting anything. I ordered an omelette and 10/10 times at any sit down restaurant I've been to the waiter/waitress asks if I need anything else. I also ordered a regular drip coffee and not once did anyone come by and offer to pour me a refill. Even asking if I would like my cup topped off shouldn't be a question and that goes back to when I was a kid and hearing family & friends tell me that pouring coffee refills is part of excellent service should not be new in the customer service realm. Did this change overnight? If this is your restaurant policy then I wasn't aware. I give a rating of 3/5 because at least the omelette with the black beans I ordered was good. For a breakfast place, this has a few major shortcomings: 1) the hash browns are inedible. It's like thin frozen patties that were reheated. No flavor, no crisp. Just blah. 2) no coffee options other than just coffee. No barista, no specialty drinks. There are so many other places nearby that at least offer a more robust coffee menu. 3) avocado toast is served on basically white bread. Not sure where this sourdough is from, but it was flavorless and under toasted, making the entire dish a bit soggy. Not what you want from avocado toast. I won't be back, especially since there are better options around. EDIT: The rude response from the owner is all the more reason to take your business elsewhere. Don't blame the patrons of the business for not asking for bread choices or sending back the food (I did ask for the hash browns to be extra crispy, but they were still soggy in the middle). I ordered to go but just went to a nearby park to eat, so the food did not sit for more than 3-5 minutes before it was opened. Apparently this is their idea of "extra crispy" hash browns. Also probably the worst biscuits and gravy i have ever tasted. Most biscuits and gravy kindof just is what it is, with some restaraunts actually creating something above and beyond. I also had the biscuit with gravy, which was pretty darned good, and my folks are from Alabama so I've had plenty of biscuits and gravy during my life! Ambience was nice and calm we came on a Friday around 10:30am I ordered the ORO pancakes that are supposed to be to have port wine infused strawberries layers and a white creme sauce . I like to venture out and try new places, but this one was a miss from the start. The table was sticky, and the coffee didn't taste organic even though the server insisted it was. That should've been my sign to leave. When the food came, the presentation was messy and the flavor was even worse. I ended up returning nearly my entire order for everyone in my party. To make matters worse, while I was explaining my concerns, the waiter referred to my son as "she." Even though he's clearly a boy! Little guy is shredded with clear muscle definitions for his age how can you mistake him for a girl? Anyway, He got checked real quick and he corrected himself and apologized, but then ended with "whatever," which really sealed the deal on the bad service. I let it go because English clearly was his 1st language; he probably doesn't fully understand the context of how that comes across in the situation.
