My gauge for how good an Asian restaurant is usually means you see a high percentage of Asians eating in said establishment. There was maybe one other there and mostly white tourists. I definitely fell for the tourist trap. The udon was bland, the ramen the same. The only thing I liked was the miso butterfish. It's in a beautiful location right by the water. Was recommended Star Noodle two years ago and finally tried it. Unfortunately I was not very impressed. Had the Vietnamese Crepe, which I would give a 2/10. It had shrimp and pork but the crunchy "crepe" sucked and the whole dish was lacking in any real flavor. We also had the Singapore Noodles and I can say it was the most over-salted dish I have ever had anywhere in the world. No joke. My brother agreed. Wait past our reservation time. I know they can get busy, but is this any way to run out of business? Our most favorite restaurant in Maui! Star Noodle was on my list of the top 5 places to eat at in Maui. Yet, I didn't think about making reservation and just decided to stop here on a whim. Lucky for us, there were seats available at the bar, so we didn't have to wait long at all to get seated. I literally wanted to order everything on the menu! We settled with 2 drinks, 2 appetizers and 2 entrees to share. Each one of the dishes were cooked and seasoned perfectly. There were a good mix of textures in each of the dishes with the exception of Eggplant dish (kinda expected). This was big for me since I prefer my food to have a variety lol. Being so popular and in such a touristy location, do expect the pricing to be a bit higher. This is my wife's favorite place. We had the Kimchee for starters and it was really made well, one of my favorites. The steamed buns with pork belly were amazing, we always get these if available. Then we had the Miso Butterfish charred on the bottom. The flavors were amazing with a blend of sweet but charred. Then we finished off with the hapa ramen noodles. Rich pork broth with roasted pork. It had been quite a few years since our last visit and it is also our first time to their new location on Front Street. This new location is definitely a big plus because it is ocean front vs warehouse views. The service is just as friendly as I remembered. We ordered 9 dishes to share between the 4 of us. The creativity is definitely there. Many of the dishes are not what we expect given the familiar ethnic labels. Taste wise, I have to give a range of stars between dish to dish. Starting with the 5 stars Kimchi, followed by the equally excellent eggplant, paholi salad and miso butterfish. Pretty good for the garlic noodles, Harper ramen with 3 to 4 stars. They did a fantastic job on doing their own twist and take on traditional Asian dishes. In order of what we ordered * papaya tofu salad: tangy and refreshing! An excellent mix of food textures because kobacha squash isn't usually found in papaya salad. A great starter for the heavier foods to come. * miso butterfish: just as all the other reviews say, this fish literally melts upon first touch with your chopsticks. Sweet and savory! Careful of the few tiny bones. * crab & kobocha mandu: one of the most unique takes on a dumpling we've ever had. It's almost like ravioli, less like a Korean Mandu. Instead of cheese, it's a puréed squash and crab with a nice salty bite with the lap Cheong (preserved sausage). The citrus and spicy sauce were very light, not too saucy * hot & soup soup: again, so surprised by how good this was. It's definitely lives up to its namesake of being sour and spicy. Almost like a distant cousin of pho. Personal preference was the we wish this was rice noodles instead of flour noodles. The flour noodles felt misplaced. * garlic noodles: almost like a buttery indo mie for those who know! Very delicious. Wish this was served with some sort of protein and veggies. Buttery and garlic deliciousness in the first few bites, but gets heavy by the end. * annin tofu: the favorite of the night!! It's the "not too sweet" option, with very delicate and light jasmine syrup on top of almond tofu. The almond was very very light, not like your typical Asian almond tofu. No broth, as you would expect from a soup. The "fat chow funn" was prepared in a way I'm not used to; thick rectangles instead of long noodles. So happy Star Noodle adapted and survived and is thriving after the fire that tore through Ka'anapoli Beach area of Maui. The menu is different than the last time I was there. I think the selection is better. My friends and I sat at the bar top because the wait was over an hour long and we were starting to feel hangry. Easily grabbed 3 stools and the bar tenders came and greeted us quickly. They were both very friendly. And treated us like we were long lost Ohana! I got the Hapa Ramen, which is my go-to and it never fails. The broth was very rich and porky. The depth of flavor and the umami... chefs kiss! Only thing that would have made it better was more broth (I wanted to lick my bowl dry of every last drop! Don't judge. If you know, you know and you would too!) The space is really nicely decorated. We had the steamed pork dumplings, the adobo pork, the miso butter fish, kimchi, and topped it off with the garlic noodles. Keep in mind that garlic noodles are very garlicy, which is fabulous, however, you may want to have it last. The Sauvignon Blanc was chilled perfectly and Manhattan was really delicious. The soup itself was good - definitely needed to add some condiments for more complex flavor. The garlic noodles were also very good! I liked how thin the noodles were and the flavor was out of this world. To end the meal, we ordered the malasadas with caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, and peanuts. Definitely recommend! I liked how the cooler actually had fresh Calamansi in it but I couldn't taste the alcohol so it was more tart than I expected. The Sunday in Kyoto was a nice balance of sweetness and Japanese whiskey. For food we ordered 3 appetizers to share - Miso Butterfish, Bao Buns, and the Chicken Wings. Those chicken wings were piping hot but so delicious, definitely my favorite of the 3. It was covered in a Nuoc Cham sauce and topped with crushed peanuts and cilantro.
