Steer clear. Very dishonest and deceptive business practices. They pulled the bait and switch move on my company funded move to win the work. The rep. in S. Korea asked me if the competitor bid a 20' or 40' container. I told him I could not answer that, to simply submit your bid predicated on your in person assessment of my HHG items. They proceed to bid the 20' container and win. Price is reasonable. Then the problems start on the day of the move, because my HHG won't fit in the 20' container. Now after 6-7 months, I still don't have my belongings and they are asking for an additional $2574 for an overflow shipment, plus more $$$ for storage costs. This is absolutely their fault, and they want me to pay for it. Stay far away from these folks!!! This advice is free, their games will not be. read more

I debated on whether I would write this review, but I figured it may help someone out. So here we go... I needed to hire a moving company for a very small, local move. And when I say local, I mean two blocks. I knew some of the furniture was too big for me to handle on my own, so I sought out companies via Angi's list. I received many replies to my request, and I ultimately selected Star International based on overall feedback and the conversation with the initial representative that I spoke with. When I spoke to the initial representative, I inquired about hidden charges. The representative assured me that I wouldn't be charged for any additional items, unless I had fragile items, such as TVs, mirrors, artwork, etc. I explained to the representative that I would be moving all of that on my own. My initial quote was based on a two person job at three hours. Fast forward to moving day... I did not get a heads up call that the movers were on their way, but that was fine. The movers called at approximately 9:30, which was within their 8-10 arrival window, to let me know they were outside. I'll start with the positives - the movers were extremely nice and helpful, and they took great care of my belongings. However, with that being said, they took some unnecessary "precautions" to move my furniture. For example, in addition to wrapping my sofa in a blanket and tape, they also wrapped it in saran wrap. See picture. I thought that was strange, especially considering the extremely short distance that we were moving, but unfortunately, I did not say anything to them at the time because I figured it was their normal protocol. I wish I had, though, because all of the unnecessary wrapping took additional time and resulted in my three hour timeframe being exceeded. Additionally, little did I know until I received the final invoice, they actually charged me for the saran wrap. WTF? I found this to be extremely unethical especially since they did not ask me if I wanted/needed the wrapping and did not disclose the additional charge to me. I'm not sure if blame is to be placed on the original representative that I talked to or the movers, but no one made me aware and I did not think that I would need to watch them like a hawk to ensure I would not get hosed. Maybe Star is a great company for longer moves, but based on my experience I would not recommend them for small, local jobs. read more

Workers was nice but needed more help. It took them three hours just to pack a two bed room town house in which me and my wife pack all boxes so it can go faster. To top it off i had to help them unload the truck to get done quicker. The workers even agreed they needed 3 people. I feel the company is trying to be cheap by sending two men knowing it will take longer to receive more money out the customer. Star International Movers helped us relocate from Reston Virginia to Helsinki Finland starting in August of 2020. They were extremely professional and coordinated the entire process. Due to covid, the walk-through process was done remotely and the person directing this was very easy to work with. Our initial contact Miguel Cesares was infinitely patient in expaining the process. The move-out was done over two days, on the first day, a very capable team packed up our things; on the second day, our dedicated forty-foot container was brought to our door and all of our packed items were loaded. Finally, with the help of a specialized tow truck, our Toyota Rav-4 was driven into the container. The container was then sealed and was not unsealed until it reached Helsinki. We were provided a link we were able to use to track our container as it travelled. Star International Movers used a local company in Finland named Travel Cargo International Removals to handle everything in Finland. When our container arrived about six week after being packed, Travel Cargo agents retrieved all of our goods. We picked up our vehicle from their office and had them warehouse our goods until we found a home. After finding a home, we contacted Travel Cargo and they delivered our goods within days. They sent a team of four professional movers that very carefully unloaded our items and verified that all 142 inventoried pieces were delivered. The team was careful to put down floor protection and to get all of our goods unloaded before it started raining. The team then unpacked our furniture and rugs and placed them where requested. We did not have them unpack all items as we were not yet sure of where to place them. The moving team then removed all of the packing materials and floor protection. All of our furniture, dishware, ceramics and other items arrived without any damage. If you are planning an international move, Star International Movers can get your goods safely to your new home; I highly recommend this company. I had a really bad experience. I moved August 6th from my apt to a house. The movers showed up and said they had mistakenly been told to bring an " extra man" and could I please play or the man. They said it would "shorten the time and make my bill smaller." I was stuck, it was Saturday afternoon and needed to move. I was alone and before I could check to see if everything had been brought into the house, they had left without bringing in a large classic Fender amp and mixer, and new electric guitar, easily worth over a 1000 dollars. They okayed dumb and said they didn't have it, but we only drove 15 minutes up 95 and they followed me. They blatantly stole the musical equipment from me. i called Fairfax County Police, but was told suing was my only recourse in this situation. read more

I set up my pre-move survey appointment for a week out, the day came and they never showed, never called. I called the office and they didn't know why he didn't show, so they call the person who was to do the pre-survey. The office called me back and apologized for the no show. She then proceeded to tell me they were fully booked through August anyway. Seriously?? Why wouldn't I have been told they were booked through August when I called to set up a pre-survey appointment? If I could give this company zero stars, I would. On a recent cross-country move, they lost my sofa (yes, an entire sofa) for ~ a month, damaged several items, lost boxes and delivered boxes that didn't belong to me. Their staff laboriously affixed stickers to every item they picked up, but clearly they used no actual tracking/inventory system to ensure I received everything they pick up. To add to the unprofessionalism, one of their staff pestered my son who was overseeing delivery to call me at work to ask if he could purchase some of my belongings! Sure - I want to pay $6,000 (much higher than I was quoted, BTW) to move my stuff cross-country only to turn around and sell it to the people who moved it! I was also mislead by the salesman who told me the basic insurance provided $.60/lb. of coverage. He indicated that if I had 5,000 lbs. to move, that would equate to $3,000 in insurance. In actuality, the $.60/lb. is PER ITEM, so when Star/Arpin smashes your belongings or loses them completely, you can claim only the weight of the item x $.60. When they broke my small entertainment center, the coverage was peanuts. I cannot emphasize this enough - DO NOT use this company for your move. I wouldn't trust them to pass the salt at the dinner table! read more

Star International is GREAT! The last time I moved, I chose a local mover who gave the cheapest price. It was a disaster. So this time I was determined to do things differently. Now, Star International didn't give me the cheapest quote. But it wasn't the highest, either. So I went with them based on their reviews, and the fact they were a long-time established mover. It was an excellent decision. My main contact, Yvonne, patiently answered my gazillion questions and walked me through each step. The crew they sent to pack were super friendly and professional. They came in and got down to business. I had concerns about some pieces (antiques) and they noted and accommodated. They didn't resort to simply throwing blankets on stuff and carrying it out. Afterward, Yvonne gave updates on the status, and everything arrived in perfect condition on the other end. All in all, Star International were fantastic. Star Moving Solutions did our move from Maryland to Pennsylvania this summer. They did a really poor job. A team of five arrived and only one of the team members spoke broken English. So it was very difficult to communicate. The other team members were dirty and disrespectful of our things. They would take one item to the truck and then disappear for ten minutes. It took them 10+ hours over two days to pack and load our things (we live in a 1600 sq foot townhome). I came into our living room the second day to find them sitting on my furniture talking and laughing. There were empty bags of chips and waterbottles everywhere despite there being plenty of trash bags available. One of them spilled their lunch down our stairs and did not clean it up. They proceeded to walk through it the rest of the day. After they were gone, we discovered that they left trash in our trash can with soiled toilet paper that attracted maggots. I would never have movers like that step foot in my home again - you are better off going with someone else. read more

The sales person was upfront and honest, Star even provided used boxes. The truck driver and movers were not employees of Star. Find a company that employs both the driver and movers. We moved across country, the driver smoked so our things smelled like smoke. Since we have allergies and asthma we are non smokers. The driver promised to call the police department or someone in authority from the city to determine if his truck could be parked on a busy street. Instead he called a friend, who said he couldn't park there, and although he was in the area the day before he did not visually look to see if his truck would fit in the loading area which resulted in an additional $600+ charge. My items were moved three times, which may have resulted in the broken lamps, damaged items or it could have been the movers. We had three movers and only one mover seemed to have experience and pack properly. Since my move was during the COVID-19, Eric explained all the precautions that would be taken to ensure a safe move. Once my moved was scheduled, I dealt with Frederico, who was always very good and knowledgeable. Eric was always available to call or email if I had any additional questions or concerns. Star International worked with me to allow alternate dates in case of snow/ice since i moved in January. They would even have delivered on a Sunday if necessary at no extra cost. I obtained 3 quotes, Star's was the best. Their crew leader and crew were friendly, courteous, respectful, on-time, and professional. They arrived on time for the loading, then they arrived at my new place the next morning right when we had agreed upon, and the move-in was very smooth. My first Yelp review, so you know it's going to be great or an absolute disaster. This is one of the worst experiences I've had with a company in the recent past. Simply put, we did not get what we paid for. Our furniture etc, is going to be delivered at least 5 days after the time window that was scheduled by Star. We only received a delivery date after the scheduled window had already passed, wreaking logistical havoc on our plans. In early May 2013 we hired Star International Movers to move our four bedroom house worth of 'stuff' (including a piano & an elliptical machine) from South Riding VA to Earlysville VA - about 85 miles. Speaking as a family who has made ten cross-USA and international (including Europe & Asia) moves over the past 30+ years, from start to finish Star International Movers did a uniformly superior job of packing and moving our belongings. Before selecting Star International Movers we got estimates from four other moving companies; all of them provided quotes that ranged from 'a little' to 'a whole lot' more expensive. And when we saw the consistently positive reviews on this website, the decision pretty much made itself. Jimmy Re, the owner, did the initial estimate and was always available to answer questions. When we explained that we also wanted to do some of the time-consuming packing ourselves (e.g. books, cds, dvds) , he offered to further reduce the estimate based on what we packed. He was also the only mover who, noting that the elliptical machine was too large to move from the basement, included a quote for a technician to properly disassemble & reassemble it The four-man moving crew arrived around 8am on Thursday morning and immediately began packing. Based on the obvious care and skill that they exhibited as they packed each item, It immediately became obvious that this was an experienced group of professionals. Each box was carefully labeled with contents and room name. They also went to great lengths to protect our house as they packed; laying out packing blankets & packing boxes to protect the carpets and floors. As we spoke with them throughout the day, it was obvious that they took great pride in their work. They finished around 4pm. The four-man crew returned on Friday morning about 8am with two moving trucks and, after laying out additional coverings on carpets, stairs, and walls along the stairs, they began loading the trucks. Just like Thursday, they took great care to avoid damaging the items or our home. They also proved themselves amazingly skilled at navigating some very unwieldy items up & down fairly tight stairways. Again, they finished by around 4pm. On Saturday (after a 2 hour drive from Sterling) the four-man crew arrived at our new home about 10am and began unloading the trucks. They were finished by about 3pm. As we unpacked each of the boxes over the next several days, we repeatedly commented about the obvious care that the packers took with our 'stuff'. And a few days later we received a call from Jimmy advising us that he'd reduced our final bill by about 6% to account for the boxes that we had packed. Used Star Movers for a local move and definitely had a number of issues and a lack of customer service. Our sales rep who said he'd stop by to check in, never did, never called and never followed up. He also informed us to leave our clothes in the cabinets. When we received our furniture and some of our boxes at the new house, we found out they packed up and boxed anything/everything that was left in the cabinets, costing us their time and, at the end of the job, over $30 in charges for the boxes they used/supplied. Before they left, we found some damage to a single piece of furniture and after, several others. I worked directly with Jimmy on this move. He was extremely professional and knew his craft for bidding out the move. He was upfront in saying that his estimate is generally a little high to set expectations appropriately. The moving crew (led up by Chris) arrived on time, was efficient, and took good care of our valuables. They were gentle with our new house and were finished under the estimated time. Receiving a recommendation from someone who used the company was helpful but I also wanted to "shop around" and see which company was the best price. However, after the first consultation for an estimate with Jimmy from Star, I canceled the other companies I had scheduled before even getting other estimates. From the beginning I found Star Movers to be honest, genuine, helpful, supportive, responsive and not at all frustrated with my many many questions and requests. We moved from a third floor condo and the movers carried heavy boxes down several flights of stairs. Star did not charge me extra for extra long staircases; I've had previous moving companies charge extra for long staircases. Only one item was broken and that was by my husband. The movers were careful and hard working. Even though they're paid by the hour they moved quickly and finished earlier than expected. The final cost was exactly what was estimated. This is a review of a move from DC to Denver. I hired this company, as they have competitive quotes and good reviews on Angie's list. Star is the company on the DC side, whereas Arpin does the interstate move. Both sides of the move had good crews that were in and out after about 4 hours on each side for an 800 square foot apartment- they were careful and wrapped everything with layers of protection. I did have some damage, and recommend getting the insurance for interstate moves, as they must move the items from the preliminary shuttle truck to the larger interstate truck. I had no problem getting reimbursed for the small amount of damage. I hate to write a good deal about any damage as they did an excellent job, just recommending insurance and making a statement that they do honor the policy. After the move to Denver, I was impressed by Star's continued interest in the service provided. read more

I believe most people would agree that moving can be an extremely stressful experience even when you hire a moving company to handle the heavy physical work. Fortunately for me, I recently hired Star International for a "decluttering" move in prep for our impending home sale. Every step of the process was professionally executed from initial in-home estimate, to pre-move planning/scheduling, to move-day activities of carefully wrapping and transporting our "stuff", and finally the incredibly efficient and careful packing at our storage facility.
