A fairly decent bar with a very knowledgeable waitstaff. The interior of this establishment is fairly interesting as it is going for a worn look that is fairly welcoming however it is somewhat offputting given the upscale local it operates in. Well - it's a bar. It's kinda crowded and run down. Definitely divey. The drinks are normally priced for a downtown venue and perhaps I should judge it based on it's customers. That said, I think I'm to old to go places where you have to step over vomit. Yes. Vomit. It brought back charming memories of my early 20s, but that's about it. I usually have a great time no matter what, but occasionally certain male bartenders can be really rude. Because it is kinda divey, which I love, there does't seem to be the normal rules of hospitality that apply in most bars and restaurants. But as I said above, I always have a great time there as rude comments don't seem to matter when I'm having a fun night with my friends. The karaoke is a blast! I don't really remember this place, but I assume it was great. My entire trip to Denver was a lot of fun. I checked out these neat stores that had a big green plus side outside of them. They were cash only, which was weird for a botanical shop, but whatever. read more

I won't be back. No parking and serious problem street people loitering. Towing scam and they towed my car within minutes. Nasty unkempt tow drivers and the lot is nowhere near secure. Cost $264 CASH ONLY to get your car out of impound. Can't believe this business participates in such a scam. Avoid completely. read more

Don't spend money on the Touch Tunes machine...the bartender will change the song if he doesn't like what you've picked.

The front bar can be fun, but is always packed if there any kind of crowd. The question mark is the back room if it is open. If the back room is open then it depends on what bartender is there. Every bartender except for one is an asshole. There is a jukebox in the back that you pay to play your music. What they don't tell you is that the bartender can skip whatever song they want. What that means is, no matter how much of your hard earned money you put into that jukebox the bartender will (9/10 times) skip your chosen song rendering your money worthless. Don't go to this bar unless all else is packed and suck. As far as stars go... 1 star read more

It's a bar. With a star. We went bar-hopping, the 1-Up, Swanky's and then the Star Bar. I guess I did not find that it stood out for any reason. But reading reviews here, I see that you can order out food...they do not have a kitchen. Were here for the beards and beers last Saturday and had a blast. The drinks were reasonably priced, the bartenders are super nice and helpful. The place is clean. They don't have a kitchen but you can feel free to order from the restaurants nearby or bring your own food. read more

This place has been a favorite of min for the past few years. I have seen it evolved and has become quite a popular joint. The Lodo crowd is slowly over but it hasn't kept me away yet! This place is awful. Overpriced drinks with pretentious, cold and rude bartenders. If you are going to work in hospitality, learn to treat people with respect. The only positive thing about this place is the DJ for Karaoke. He is everything the rest of the staff are not: accommodating, helpful and friendly. read more

Local bar, retro and pseudo dive. I had to convince my girlfriend we wouldn't get mugged going inside. The bartender was laid back, but was slightly pissed when our drinks were free after she beat him at paper, rock, scissors. Maybe this is just a Monday thing, but it was great! I go here but obviously not often enough because we have just met the hidden Pearl of Downtown, Brett (?) nestled in awesomeness behind the bar. Her skills rival those of many of our own favorite, (in)famous bartenders known for precious & rare concoctions all over the US. Star Bar can boast a very esoteric mix of liquors (and even beers) at any time...all of the fun toys...but Brett really knows how to play with them. Pick any liquor you have been wanting to try and she will lay some magic on it and dish it to you for subsequent swooning. Recently the Mr, a friend and myself enjoyed challenging her with requests. With each challenge we belted out, she batted back with drinks that truly rivaled our memories of Bourbon & Branch, among other favorite mixology havens. My final request that day was "please make me something that tastes like sugared saddle-strap". She whipped out a stave from a charred whisky barrel, busted out a torch to burn the surface, placed a rocks glass over it to collect the smoke. She then commenced to combing-out liquors from various genres, bonded by bitters and essences and poured them up into the smoky glass for an earthy, dirty, leathery-sweet sipper that finished my afternoon. Watch out Bonanno - this unpretentious, punk-rock hole has everything you do but without the snoot, hipster pretense. Don't get me wrong - I love the Bonanno joints but sometimes I just want to be with "my people" (that would be old punks, freaks and the totally chill). Now for the missing 5th star...a bar with such a huge repertoire of excellence that will make allowances for the flavored vodka drinkers/cheap beer drinkers should also be able to dish up the pedestrian Caucasian on any lazy Sunday...Star Bar refuses to keep dairy. Thus, I get no Caucasian, Gary. I was trying to recall on our last visit why SB is not a routine part of our Downtown Troll™ and I think it was the lack of White Russian goodness. So, a solid 4 Stars for Star Bar - I dig it! read more

While at Starbar, the bartender said to me "Welcome to your new favorite bar." While he was dead wrong, I still had a great experience here. At first, said bartender came off a bit reserved, but once we got to talkin' about booze he opened right up. He knew his stuff pretty well. Anyway we were just passing through with the passport. The drink was the front range mule and it was pretty tasty. Made with Spring 44 honey vodka and New England cranberry liquor. Interesting combo. This place is your typical dive bar- not in the nicest part of town but there's a solid selection of alcohol. Limited beers on tap but a huge selection of canned beers from local breweries. Good variety of beers on tap. However, half the taps weren't working. Apparently neither was the bartender, who overcharged us (his coworker later told us); $12 for two beers, neither of which was posted or told to us being 10oz? No way. They charge more than the breweries less than a mile away that MAKE the beer! Very disappointed - left immediately (but not before being asked what my rent was by a local vagrant). This is a true dive bar. Nothing fancy. Great music, cold beer and funny friendly staff. What's not to like about it?

Love craft beer? Good cocktails? Divey spaces? Smiling, friendly bartenders? Yes! Well you can find all of this and more at Star Bar. Sure, there are some who treat this place like it's their living room (dare to sit at the back booth where heavy drinking tripsters and their ilk like to "office"--who knows you may end up meeting your new best friend) and it's not the place to be on an ubersunny day (it's dark in there--though I like their cozy back patio with extra bar), but these are really incidentals. Star Bar is a GREAT bar. It's the kind of place you go to because you have the inside scoop and you understand that there's more to Denver nightlife than mixologists and ice hacked from a huge block with an antique ice pick. The beer selection is top notch (make sure you check out both handle locations, one behind the bar and one to the left, also behind the bar but more hidden), the bartenders smile and will chat you up and you can always hit up Biker Jim's across the street if you need something to soak up the alcohol. Star Bar lets you bring in food, no problem. Bring in a case of Hamm's, however, and you may have a real problem. Nevermind consumption laws, you just can't drink that kind of swill in a place where there's such good stuff a'pourin'. read more

Great bar with incredible offering of beers on tap. Though there are only 6 or 8 tap handles, Justin insists on having affordable, hard to find, palate stretching brews available all of the time. On my most recent visit, I saw two sours from New Belgium, an imperial stout from Lost Abbey and a cool sour collaboration between Alagash and New Belgium. This bar does not serve food though it is highly encouraged to bring your own food from outside or order food to be delivered. Starbar is a great place for groups, Sunday football and pubcrawls. Located just blocks from Coors field, this is a well kept secret in the ballpark neighborhood and a great escape from the hordes of partiers when the Rockies are in town. read more

Stopped in for the first time on Thursday early PM GABF week as a Pit Stop between Great Divide and Falling Rock. Awesome place, total dark hole old school atmosphere. Pinball n Skeetball in the back. Great staff who known their beer and spirits. They had a slew of sours from New Belgium & Odell's when we were in, and they really got a great day rolling for us. No food, but you can bring in food from anywhere you want. They also have menus from the local places like Marco's and Biker Jim's. Kind of reminded me of Barcade in terms of it's vibe (minus the 80's video games of course). It was a welcome relief from the swarms of thirsty folks found at Falling Rock. Excellent background music, yes I'm an old fart from the "grundge era". HA! read more

A quintessential dive bar...which is rare in downtown denver with all the "taverns". This one holds true. small venue but alot of fun.

I've spent Tuesday happy hours, Friday afternoons and late Saturday nights here and every time it's awesome.

I love this place! We met the owner at the Passport Closing Party, he told us that they were having an after party with karaoke ans drink specials! Who can pass that up? The atmosphere was super fun and laid backed, we spent a good chunk of our night at Star Bar and it was great. Nice bartenders, good dj (he was really nice about what songs people wanted to sing) overall a really good way to spend a Thursday night! read more

If you love dive bars, a mellow atmosphere, down to earth staff, and a great craft beer selection then look no further. The staff behind the bar is well informed when it comes to beers especially those that they carry at the bar. I highly recommend going on a weekday like Wednesday or Thursday to get the full experience as the weekends tend to have way to many people unless that's the type of atmosphere you're looking for.
