We went to dinner here tonight. The flavor combinations are great. The problem with all of this is the salt level. I like salt, but this food was so salty that we didn't eat most of it. Suggestion, this place could be amazing, one of the greats, but dear chef, please taste all of your food and reduce your salt level. Most of the time this means the chef smokes tobacco. But the waitress said he didn't. Even all the greens on every plate tasted like they were washed in vinegar and heavy salt. So sad, $170 for a meal that could have been great. I wish I would have had Bojangles lol read more

Eat here, you must. (/Yoda voice) Stanbury is still the most hyped restaurant in Raleigh, and deservedly so. You can actually call to make reservations, but don't be surprised if they are booked a week or two in advance. The restaurant is led by Chef Drew Maykuth, who cooked for four years at one of my favorite restaurants in Asheville, The Admiral. Stanbury's menu has some of the most unique items in Raleigh; You'll find roasted marrow, crispy pig head, and maybe tongue or sweetbreads. Like The Admiral, there's also a lot of seafood. Oysters are a must-do (unless you're allergic to shellfish). I recommend sharing a few small plates and a large plate. The menu rotates frequently based on the seasonal ingredients. They also have some of the best cocktails in Raleigh, and that menu rotates regularly too. In the winter, the place can get a little smoky since they cook with an open kitchen. In the summer, they open up a garage door to their outdoor seating. If you venture outside, don't miss the stencil of Yoda. read more

Swanky little spot tucked into Oakwood district of Raleigh neighborhood. Tile fish ceviche was my ultimate favorite, but do not shy away from any menu item that catches your attention. Your taste buds will thank you! Mine certainly did! Another must is the Krispy Kreme bread pudding! Can't wait to go back! read more

Had an amazing meal here on a Wednesday night. Reservation for three and we were seated promptly on time. They have about a dozen small plates to choose from that change out frequently. They also have about 4 to 5 large plates or main courses. Two of us had the ribeye with smoked fingerling potatoes. Highly recommend! Great flavors, cooked perfectly. My wife had the lamb with blue cheese grits, and it was also delicious and perfectly prepared. The location is very comfortable Service was excellent. We asked many questions and they always had the answer. Highly recommend! read more

Taking over this place from one of my favorite Raleigh restaurants, the Stanbury has some huge shoes to fill. Not nearly as hipster as its predecessor, this new eatery ups the stakes with a larger menu, more complex dishes and some top-notch cocktails. The menu is mostly small plates, with about 5 main dishes. We had the pig's head, bone marrow, oysters, tagliatelle, and scallops. Most of each dish was well planned and even better executed. My only gripe was that the pig's head didn't have much to it after the first few bites. In fact, the beans were the best part. The tagliatelle was light, not burdened by a heavy sauce, and made even better by the heirloom grape tomatoes, which were prominent throughout the dish. The drink menu, consisting of some multi-ingredient cocktails, is worth checking out. If this place wasn't so far from the rest, it could be a pretty regular watering hole. I'm glad these guys decided to keep the open-air concept of the place intact. With a few cosmetic touches and upgraded decor, it still feels like a local hangout. The kitchen and bar rub up against each other and makes for a really nice atmosphere. The staff on both ends seemed to be having fun executing on this night. This section of Blount is like the incubator for great restaurants. They come in, put out a great menu, and execute so well that you can't believe they aren't in a more popular area. As the Stanbury's menu matures and turns, I can't wait to see how they progress. 4 stars for keeping the integrity of the space and for a great start. I'm sure their menu will improve and they will be around long enough for us to see it happen. No longer a hidden gem thanks to its predecessor, Stanbury can carve-out a legacy of its own. read more

Wow... this place is amazing!!! We tried to go one night and the guy told us at 6pm they were booked through the night, I was shocked until we finally ate here and now I understand why they are so booked. Make a reservation in advance. This place is worth it. They also have limited seating. The mixed drink selection wasn't too great but they'll make just about anything you ask as long as they have the ingredients. The staff is great and the bartenders are good but they do get a little busy. The menu was amazing and I've been told it changes so I like that variety. They do have things for your picky eaters but if you aren't into trying different things this place may not be for you. Otherwise it is amazing and their menu is awesome. Try something different! read more

Oh my god, thank you stanbury! Having just moved from Chicago, it feels good to know I still have some digging to do to find the great restaurant spots like the stanbury. Why? Because well, you won't just stumble across this place! It's well hidden and perhaps so good it's worth keeping a secret;) Everything we had was great. Highlights include the tuna crudo, charred green beans, Bavette steak, and house made pasta. Yum! Cocktails are great, cool open kitchen with hipster chefs and servers. Will definitely be back! read more

Great restaurant! Food was prepared perfectly and service was on point. The Pig Head is a must try as well as the Scallops and Pork Chop. Wine list could be expanded but what they do offer is sensible and unique. Stanbury is a top five Raleigh restaurant and the two hour wait list tells me they will be around for the long haul. Well done to the entire Stanbury team. read more

Ate here on a Wednesday night with my wife and had a great time. We didn't have reservations but we were able to get a table. It was pretty busy and service was slow (we saw two impatient patrons walk out). We first ordered trophy beer and a cab for drinks and then ceviche and the soft shell crab for appetizers. Both dishes were fairly small but packed with flavors. I only got a bite of the ceviche but my wife seemed to really enjoy it. The soft shell crab had a creamy white sauce that went well with the kale. We then ordered a cheese plate and the pigs head. The blue cheese was great, didn't care too much for the NC cheese though. Bolted bread was a great plus! The pigs head was super tasty with a nice mustard flavor. It was pretty heavy but definitely a great choice for an appetizer that will fill you up. We ordered the peach cake for dessert. It was interesting but I felt the bacon ice cream slightly overpowered everything. Overall, an exciting and interesting place for dinner. Our small meal went past $100 so be prepared for that. Also, make reservations or go on an off day. We'll definitely go back for a small meal or on a special occasion! read more

Stanbury rocks. Stop reading reviews, make a reservation, and go eat. Seriously stop reading this review. Okay, so you did not listen to me....place has a laid back Main St Breckenridge feel and eats that are off the charts. We had the fried oysters, chicken fried quail, and duck breast small plates plus the pork chop large plate. We literally licked each plate clean and could not figure out how each plate could possibly be better than the last. Topped it off with the Krispy Kreme bread pudding, and I thought my wife was going to stab me with her fork so I would stop stealing her precious sugary goodness. Likely our favorite place in town...I might update this review in the morning to tell you it stinks so we'll have an easier time getting a table tomorrow. read more

We were a party of three approximately fifteen minutes early for our reservation and we had to stand awkwardly near the bar while a table was cleared. The bartenders did a fantastic job of ignoring us completely even after eye contact was made. Our table was literally just inside the front door. It was 17 or 18 degrees fahrenheit out and the door was opened frequently. I'm a pretty warm-natured person, so I was not personally uncomfortable, but it was a terrible seating location for someone who booked a reservation well in advance. (- 1 star) Once we were seated, the experience was five stars, all the way. Our server, Mark, was outstanding; I never touched the wine bottle nor did my water glass reach empty. He thoroughly explained every item we had questions about. We ordered an entree of tagliatelle with pistachio pesto, roasted cauliflower, beef tartare, crispy pig head, a toad in the hole, and roasted marrow. Everything was amazing. The only thing I didn't care for was the crispy pig head and that's all me. I'm not a big fan of heavily smoked food and the meat was very, very smoky. The blend of flavors and textures on the plate were great and would have been considered exceptional by someone who enjoys strong smoky flavor in their meat more. The marrow was exquisite. There's really no other word for it. Every single bite was like putting heaven in my mouth. This was by far my favorite dish. We shared a dessert of chocolate malt creme brulee and the groans of pleasure were downright indecent. Three people, six plates, one beer, one bottle of wine, and one dessert, $120 before tip. Not bad at all for the quality of the ingredients and preparation. I will definitely be back. I will make a reservation and try not to be too early, and I will ask to not be too near the front door, but I will definitely be back. read more

The Stanbury is a great option for fine dining in Raleigh. Half of the menu only seems familiar after spending too much time watching shows on Food Network, and both the atmosphere and service are great. My recommendation would be to stick to small plates for your few couple of visits so you can enjoy more of the unique dishes and variety they offer here. The small plates menu changes frequently depending on available ingredients, but there are a few solid dishes that are always available. The small plates also vary a lot in how filling they are, so you may want to ask for tips on sizes before ordering. The grilled romaine is a solid option to fill up on, and a pretty interesting take on salad too. I"m sure the large plates are good as well, but they tend to be more standard fare that you could get at plenty of other restaurants around the Triangle. It's tough to include a mention about the place next door in a review, but for those who haven't been and may not know, Escazu is literally the next door over and has won awards for their chocolate bars. Something to keep in mind if you're planning your night ahead, and maybe kill two birds with one stone. Overall, The Stanbury is a great option for fine dining and can actually be pretty affordable if you stick to small plates as well, which I recommend doing anyway. Parking can be a little tricky depending on when you go and how familiar you are with Raleigh, but just keep going down the street if you have to. Save some time for a quick trip to Escazu, and continue supporting this place! read more

I've lived in NYC for 12 years and was in Raleigh for work. I can honestly say that this was the best food I've ever had!! We ordered practically the entire menu and there wasn't a single dish that we were disappointed in. What are you even contemplating? Book a reservation already! read more

This a fabulous restaurant! Yummy southern fair with unique twists and French influence. It's a go to and the ambiance is fabulous

It's exciting every time you eat here because there are new dishes on the menu every time you go! My husband and I had roasted carrots...sweet charred goodness with a delicious crema, the chicken fried quail over grits...so good I wish there was more and a juicy smoked pork chop... TRY THEIR PORK CHOPS! Also, the vinaigrette on the mixed lettuces is wow! Our server suggested a wine, and it was exactly what I had described I was looking for. The hostess (dark curly hair and glasses) was super friendly, a great way to start the evening! I think she was the same person I talked to on the phone..really nice! It's a great place to take out of town guests, as the food is amazing and the place has a cool neighborhood vibe! read more

I was one of the first to taste what it would be like and I am blown away by the food every time. Everyone should experience this place.

This is a cute spot near the hopping downtown Raleigh district. Tucked in to a neighborhood near the Governor's Mansion, it looks like an old strip mall from the street. Inside the decor is funky thrift shop that takes me back to my 80s bedroom. The food is soooo good the the cocktails are very fun. Everything we had was great. Our table was scared of the hogs chela but it was amazing. It's a little loud so be aware. The waiter flirted with my mom which made her evening! read more

I booked for my wife's birthday dinner. Food was way to salty for both of us and my steak was overcooked. I ordered medium but got almost well done. Overall food is average but way overpriced. I was very disappointed and won't go back there again. With that price ($40 plus) for my overcooked steak, I would much rather go to Second Empire in Raleigh. At least I would get what I pay for with much better quality food and nicer dining atmosphere. read more

Long wait, seated next to two cold doors, limited vegetarian(nothing in the large plates), of the four large plate options two were sold out and it wasn't even 9pm. Goodness knows how all the patrons being seated after us felt. Since I didn't want Steak and fries the only other option was Scallops on the main menu and they were pretty tasteless The first time we came here the vegetarian options were tremendous. It seems the creativity of the kitchen has declined since last summer. Very disappointing since it was our fav place in Raleigh. Finally, in the bathrooms the drains smelt terrible. Sigh read more

Stanbury is touted by many as "the best restaurant in Raleigh." While I am not totally sure about that particular designation, it is damn good. I was with 2 other gals, and we split everything. We had: Pig Head Tartare Oysters on Half Shell Fried Oysters Grilled Romaine Bone Marrow Ribeye All dishes were solid, tasty, well-presented, and devoured. I just didn't feel like it was anything I'd never had before. Others have called it "adventurous," but to me the experience didn't feel "adventurous," per se. It DID feel very sturdy, confident, and dependable. I should say upfront that I have eaten at several restaurants with similar menus. So that is just MY experience. If you have never tried pigs head and marrow and that sort of thing, try it here first. They do it right. So, for me, if I want something "edgy," exciting, and innovative... I may not go to Stanbury. BUT when I want tasty, reliable, consistent, American continental-type fare, Stanbury will be my first choice! read more

I happened upon this place because a friend LOVES the chef who is transferring in (from Charlotte or Asheville I do not recall). I think this location used to be called the Market Restaurant. They have not had their opening night, but were awesome enough to introduce themselves with a First Friday event (August 2013). Raleigh get ready. They said hello with Spanish corn and goat tacos. Goat tacos. These may not be on the menu, but from the buzz I'm sure whatever they serve will make you come back for more. I'm ready to fall in love... read more

Stanbury - Tasty the food is - New American Near Me - Raleigh, North Carolina

We just went, and I'm already itching to go back. So many, um, unusual dishes on the menu that I'd love to discover. Mostly small plates ($5-$14), 5 large plates ($26-$29). Hubby had the pork with fingerling potatoes, radishes, and something else, which he loved. I had the lamb chops with cannellini beans and tomatoes, which was also excellent. Other large plates were steak, fish (mahi) and chips, and pasta. We also had the rye bread with butter, and broccoli with porcini mushrooms, rice, and cilantro. Both were excellent. Other small plates included bone marrow (!), pig head (!), some variant of a caesar salad, something with duck eggs, and more. Several other reviews had said there were a lot of gluten-free options, but I didn't see many. Didn't get a chance to try desserts, but they sounded delicious. This is more the hipster kind of restaurant I would expect in Asheville, rather than Raleigh. The atmosphere is a kind of small, casual, off-beat bar with stuffed animal heads and Star Wars references on the walls. Dress is anywhere from dressy to casual. We were dressed up, but I felt overdressed. One of the cooks had a Stanbury (in Star Wars font) t-shirt that said, "A long, long time ago in a neighborhood far away..." In a mostly residential area near downtown, and parking is a bit difficult. read more

This restaurants reputation is that way for a reason. With an amazing array of inspired dishes, with a heavy focus on local ingredients. Their food is great, from the taste, down to the plating itself, you can tell the team truly does care about their craft. I'm also not usually big on desserts, but I was able to sample a few and they deliver in a big way! read more

By all measures, Stanbury has achieved the elusive combination of characteristics that you find in only a handful of very special restaurants. First, the food is consistently excellent. definitely the most imaginative that raleigh has to offer, but somehow also comforting at the same time. I've eaten there 3 times now and you quickly learn to trust the chef and his team. There are no smoke and mirrors here and no gimmick, only unique and well thought out plates that balance texture and flavors with complete expertise. Second, there is a vibe about the restaurant that is energetic, authentic and unpretentious. When dining here you feel like you are participating in the process, and in a very real way you are. The bar for restaurants in Raleigh has just been significantly raised. read more

I started my review when we'd only been once to this new offering from the lads from Asheville. Now, I'm finishing it up after 3 visits and I'm happy to keep my 5 star rating. First visit: we went on day two of their opening and had an absolutely lovely dinner. I called at 6pm to make sure we could get a reservation and got the last reservation of the night for 7:30. When we arrived we were greeted promptly and chose to sit outside. We started with drinks, which include a nice selection of cocktails and beer. We then had the green beans with smoked fish- what a delicious combination! I never thought of it before, but it's like a fresh salad, complete w/ smoky goodness and a light, fresh dressing. Second, came the Cheese plate- which had fresh figs, and lovely toast to accompany the great selection of cheese. We learned on subsequent visits that the selections rotate often so you can get new tastes on the regular. Finished with the tagliatelle w/ roasted cherry tomatoes and bread crumbs. Ohhhhhh my. I rarely order pasta in a restaurant because I'm often disappointed, but it was worth it!!! service was great. Second visit: Service was cemented on this one since we went w/ a couple who had lots of questions and special requests. The server kept up very nicely and was super patient and the food met and exceeded our expectations- AGAIN. WE had several great cocktails (on and off menu), Pig's head, pork chop, green bean salad and cheese plate, tagliatelle, and the soup. Everything was superb. Third visit: Again- all options were fantastic and executed nicely. And after 3 visits, i still have lots of items to try- which is a great draw to a place that has great food. The only thing we haven't tried yet are the desserts - though they do give you a piece of escazu chocolate w/ the bill. That's the problem though- we always go to Escazu next door for our sweet fix. So, on next visit, I think i'll give the chocolate pot de creme a try! Can't wait. read more

Stanbury - Cheese course with figs. - New American Near Me - Raleigh, North Carolina

Wow wow wow! This meal was amazing. I had heard great things about this restaurant, so tried it for the first time when my family was in town. When i first walked in, I was struck by how casual it was. With how people described it, i thought it would be really fancy inside, but it was casual and welcoming - it reminded me of a barbecue place. The food though was anything but casual. We split about 5 small plates and 2 entrees between 3 of us. They offer lots of small plates and only about 3-4 entrees. The small plates were delicious, Everything from the grilled romaine (sounds boring but is not at all) to the pig head was delicious. My favorite was the pig head appetizer. The beef tar tar was good too. The entrees we tried were their fish and pork The pork dish was out of this world. We had room for dessert as well and got chocolate and an apple dessert. I am picky about my desserts but both blew me away! They also offer some interesting cocktails that were strong but good. All the recommendations were spot on - this restaurant did not disappoint. The service was also great and they could tell you a lot about the dishes. It is not cheap but isn't too expensive either. I'd recommend coming with a few people and be prepared to share so you can try as many dishes as possible. read more

Went out for a date night last 2/16/17. Venue was nice and lively. Staff was great. We spilt 6 Welfleet oysters. They were fantastic. We also split the crispy pig head. Simply amazing. I loved it. My wife said it could've been a little more crispy. Then we had the cheese plate and it was awesome as well. We picked the blue cheese and the harder of the other two. I can't remember which one it was, it was yummy. We didn't eat all of that because it is a large amount. We also split the tuna crudo. My wife didn't care for it. I liked it. It was fresh and sushiesque. My wife ordered the mocha Creme Brûlée. It had sea salt on top which was good. We both agreed that a little less salt would be our preference. Cocktails were good. Overall price was good. It was a special dinner and you certainly get fresh unique food and drinks. read more

I was so so excited to try this restaurant with my girlfriends, and with 100% honesty the food was delicious. My rating is two stars because towards the dessert portion of our mean myself and my two girlfriends were asked to leave our table to make room for another party. We had reservations just like that party did, and we were not finished with our meal. In fact my friend had just ordered her dessert and my other friend, her dessert drink. We were appalled, as this had never happened to us before. Making efforts to diplomatically oblige, we moved only to be placed in a darker, louder, less conversation friendly part of the restaurant. Ultimately, the food was delicious. I had the ribeye and it was perfect. The service left a less than desirable taste in our mouths. read more

Great spot. I took some out of town guests from Boston here and they loved it. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the cool, hip decor, our server was attentive and the food was excellent. As near-perfect a restaurant experience as you can get. We decided on The Stanbury for our anniversary dinner this week, and it lived up to all of the hype/expectation we placed on it. It was a Monday night so reservations probably weren't necessary, but luckily they take them so I didn't have to worry about the "what ifs". When we walked in a few minutes early, we were greeted warmly by the hostess, and our table was ready. She gave us our choice of two tables along the banquette, which was nice. Our waitress was excellent, never hovering but always nearby, and most impressive, the food comes out at perfect intervals. She really kept an eye on everything and managed the table service professionally but with a warm personality. We came in business-casual work clothes, and most seemed to be dressed the same, but I think the laid-back atmosphere and casual dress of the staff would make anyone feel welcome whether in jeans and tennis shoes or dress and heels. Beer list was small but excellent, with a good size draft pour for $5 of a nice Wicked Weed sour. We skipped wine as we had visited Wine Authorities earlier (close enough for a walk in good weather). The cocktail menu looked excellent, but it was Monday and I hate spending $10+ on each beverage. The wine menu was decent. Lots of Italian wines, interestingly enough. On to the food: there are several small plates ranging from $5 for bread and butter up to $13ish for seafood or steak dishes. This seems in line with most small plates restaurants in the Triangle, however, portion size is very different. We ordered 3 small plates, one cheese (which came with bread and fig spread and was a steal for $6), and split an entree. It was WAY too much food for 2 people. When do you ever say that?! We were expecting "fancy food" portions but the small plates were actually excellently sized. The bavette steak (a French food word that somehow my husband knew and I didn't) was excellent and could have almost served as an entree for one person. The mushroom arancini served with a mushroom bechamel (or as my husband lovingly referred to as "sausage gravy for vegetarians") had 3 large fried balls and plenty of sauce. The green bean dish, however, was definitely the most impressive thing of the night. I'm a carnivore that loves veggies, and these were served cold like a salad, with the most amazing lemon-garlic dressing (think the most perfect caesar dressing ever) and lots of other things to make them taste good. Cherry tomatoes, shallots, smoked tuna. It was the most excellent thing I might have ever eaten and it was just GREEN BEANS! One of only 2 tiny flaws: it could have used more tuna. We only found one tiny piece, not even a full bite. We split the pork chop entree, with cannelini beans, whole roasted fennel (soft enough that you could have spread it on bread) and a delicious roasted tomato that was basically like what I think ketchup should taste like if it were actually something I liked. The pork was cooked perfectly, and we were so full that I took home leftovers and they were almost as good 2 days later after the microwave. Second tiny complaint: it was the smallest bit salty overall, but I'm used to thinking this way about a restaurant. It was definitely not offensively salty, just a little more than I would have done at home. All this and we couldn't bring ourselves to try dessert, although the free toast with what I think was an excellent French sparkling wine (not from Champagne but amazing nonetheless) and little chocolate to end the night was perfect. Ready for the best surprise? That entire dinner, AFTER tax and tip, was just a few cents over $100. 2 beers, cheese and bread, 3 small plates, and an entree, and we left absolutely stuffed. You can barely go out for beers and burgers anymore for just a little less than that. I highly recommend this place to everyone: locals and people passing through. This is where I would take out of town visitors to show off Raleigh's culture! We will certainly visit again. read more

unique and creative dishes. everything was out of the world. The staff were amazing and Chef Carrie was a master at preparing the food.

One of my favorite restaurants in Raleigh. The manager, bartender, and servers are all great and knowledgeable. The fried oysters are my favorite small plate that is consistently on the menu. I love the seasonal changes, always something new to order. The mixed drinks are really good, with foggy bottom being my favorite. They make sure you're happy with your order. Once I ordered a gin fizz but there was no egg in it. I didn't realize you have to specify, but it was still good. I was happy with my order, but the waiter insisted that I get the drink that I want even though I was the one that ordered the wrong thing. Great service. Great attention to detail. They want you to be happy with the good and the experience there, and I will always be a regular there. read more

I love this place! I love that it's in the middle of a neighborhood. The creativeness of the dishes served never ceases to amaze me. You have to order the bone marrow. It's hard to come across it and this place does it right. Seasoned exceptionally well, sprinkled with sea salt, served with warm toaste and just melts in your mouth like butter. Crispy pig head is also a must order. It might not sound appetizing, but again the creativity of this dish just takes away any doubts you have. It's a roasted pig head that they pull all the meat off and fry it up into this ball of heaven. Served with arugula. Perfection, the bitterness of the arugula was perfect in balancing out the heartiness in the pig head. You really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I ordered a bunch of stuff and was not disappointed by any of it. I love that the kitchen is open so you see everyone cooking and interacting. If it's a nice day out they open up the balcony and with a candle light, it's a perfect date night. read more

First of all, Yelp is categorizing "moderately priced" as $11-$30, which seems like a pretty big range to me. Stanbury has a list of small plates, and then a few "large plates" or entrees, and there is where the main price difference lies. Most of the small plates are between $7 and $11, while the "large plates" or entrees, can be up to $30 (typically for something like a ribeye steak. The food itself is delicious. Lots of local, fresh ingredients put together in a way that tastes amazing. Their desserts are tasty, and they often incorporate chocolate from Escazu (right next door). Stanbury is a tasty, moderately priced place to eat in Raleigh with a a nice atmosphere. The service has always been impeccable, and I would assume the same is true of the bar. The bathroom has Mrs. Meyer's handsoap and individual cloth towels (nice touches, especially during flu season). read more
