I have been going to Stamatis since I was a child and it never fails to impress. It has all of the greek favorites with generous portions -- perfect for sharing family style. The octopus was a standout as it is always tender, perfectly grilled, and seasoned simply to let the natural flavors shine. The lamb chops were also a must-order and probably my favorite main dish. The food was amazing , and the portions are pretty big. Menu was varied with traditional Greek food and prices were reasonable. I subtracted a star (maybe I should've subtracted more?) for service, because I have never felt so rushed during a meal. We sat down and immediately a waiter came to take our order. We are not regulars, didn't even get a chance to look. When the food came (pretty quickly), he practically threw the plates in front of us. Then he tried to take the dishes away THREE DIFFERENT TIMES when it was very obvious we were not done. (We'd been there barely 30 minutes at this point because I was parked at a meter and was keeping my eye on the clock). The restaurant was half empty for dinner so no one was waiting for our table. I ordered take out because I'm not eating meat Fridays for Lent. I ordered a 2lb branzino side of lemon potato and beets. It was $65 with tax. They have a steam table when you walk in with sides and fresh fish, and straight down they have seating kind of like family style. It feels old school. When I got my food gave me an extra side of rice and dessert. All the food was absolutely amazing. The branzino was grilled and I asked them to remove the bones. It was perfect, I did not find one bone. Everything tasted good. My husband loved it too. Oh my toddler loved it too, so it's toddler approved too lol. I could tell this place was authentic the moment I walked in because everyone was speaking Greek and the menu was even in Greek. (They had an English side too). You can see all the fresh fish when you walk in and the interior is beautifully painted to make you feel like you're eating in Greece. Grilled octopus: You HAVE to try this. The most tender octopus I've ever had in my life. It was grilled to perfection and my favorite dish of the night. Grilled swordfish: I feel like tender/ moist swordfish is hard to find because swordfish is a meatier than most white fish, but this one was cooked perfectly. Lamb Fricassee: Extremely tender and moist lamb shank with a spinach and dill yogurt sauce. This one was our second favorite dish and was immediately devoured by the whole table. I'm normally not the biggest fan of dill but they managed to make it complement the lamb perfectly. Nest: Spaghetti wrapped around beef stew. This one was my least favorite because the beef was not as tender, especially compared to all the other meats we got. However it was still good and I enjoyed the crispy bits. Grilled mixed veggies: Even the veggies were super flavorful! I appreciated how it wasn't overly oily. Overall, probably the best and most authentic Greek food I've had in NYC. Would 100% recommend! 4:30 pm, busy Fathers Day. Seated promptly, took a while to order drinks and food...appetizer came in reasonable time (shared Greek salad, platter of dips and pita). About half hour later, waiter said it would be 10 mins - grill was busy. Three of four mains came literally 30 mins later; the waiter explained at that time that they were out of the fourth main (papoutsaki). "Sorry." Who does that? An hour+ after ordering tells a diner "sorry" you'll get no dinner, as all the other meals were served. (Souvlaki, grilled porgy and whitings were good; fries were a bit soggy, and so-so; lemon potatoes too much butter and oil) All-in-all, an amateurish and very disappointing holiday dinner. We got: Grilled octopus 11/10 Grilled squid 8/10 Beet salad 11/10 Saganaki 10/10 Lamb Fricassee 6/10 The grilled octopus was amazing. I can definitely eat two plates of it but I was so full since we ate family style. The beet salad was also the best beet salad I've had. I love the marinate and also how they serve it with the beet leaves. All the other dishes are delicious as well but I wasn't a big fan of the lamb fricassee. The dill was a bit overpowering and the lamb did not taste as fresh. The service was attentive and food came out just in time. They provide complimentary bread in the beginning and also galaktoboureko as desserts at the end. I've been here twice, and both times my experience was memorable because of the fantastic staff they have. They are knowledgeable and helpful. On a weekday, it's a bit slower paced but on a Saturday afternoon, it is busy busy! We started with the dips which was a great starter. This place gave me weird vibes stepping in but we were committed. First thing that happens is a waitress says "who are all these people?!" And I'm thinking we're customers following the host to our table. We got grilled cheese, calf liver, shrimp orzo and a dish with eggplant (name escapes me!). Calamari cost $5.95 / LB to buy from wholesale vendor- they serve us less than 1/2 LB fried calamari for $20 ! There are so many other Greek restaurants like BAHARI, AGNANTI by the park and many more! The owner needs to fire those rude cooks that they think they own the place ! Just got back stuffed like Thanksgiving. So delicious we had a great waiter. First I lived in Astoria for 15 yrs can't believe how much it changed from diners to great places to eat. We had a salad, with slices of fresh feta, Greek olives even dill, cut nice and chewable. Three of us shared appetizers. Forgot name in Greek but the American version the fried cheese was yummy, then a Branzino cooked to perfection, we had another dish looked like a lasagna with Bechamel' sauce baked 2" thick, that too was delicious, also even though I don't eat meat. An appetizer that was like mashed potatoes with garlic and a plate of lemon potatoes. Haven't had those cooked so well in years. The food just kept coming everything FRESH even the cream pastry with fresh cinnamon! I wish I remembered the names in Greek unfortunately I was too busy eating. - doggie bag was graciously given when we left. Definitely recommend and will be returning. You walk past the fresh fish counter on the way in and find a seat in the large dining room with lots of Greek flair. We ordered the stuffed cabbage and lamb souvlaki platter with lemon potatoes to share. I enjoyed both dishes. However, they were a bit under seasoned. That's my only criticism. Otherwise, well made and solid. The best part was the complimentary galoktoboureka - phyllo dough filled with custard drizzled with syrup served warm. We just had a delicious dinner at Stamatis. The portions for the antipasto (small) were delicious yet satisfying. I thought the roasted eggplant with feta was so good, and the tzatziki was memorable. The grilled octopus was done just right. Soft and juicy. My friend insisted on getting the lima beans appetizer and that was surprisingly flavorful as well. Stamatis has been a family favorite of ours for a long time. They specialize in group dining and can accommodate large parties. I've been here on several occasions for birthdays and holidays. It's definitely worth the trip to Astoria even if you're not local. The food is very authentic. All of the servers speak Greek and the menu is in Greek and English's My favorite items to order here are the char grilled octopus, the lamb chops and the Saganaki cheese, which is otherworldly good. On my most recent visit we also tried the mezze dips for the first time, which came with pita bread, and the fried zucchini. The dips were all good and flavorful. I really enjoyed the zucchini more than I expected to. It tasted even better with a dash of salt- very addicting. The service is also very good. We were a party of six and our waiter was very attentive to us, changing our plates and refilling our water as needed. Something to note is that when you have a large party, they do not bring individual sides for the entrees, but instead bring out sides for the table. For the table they brought us two types of roasted potatoes, French fries, and some kind of sautéed greens. At the end, they also brought out a complimentary pastry dessert for each person and coffee/tea, which was a great way to end the meal. Many years coming here. Most delicious fish in Astoria. It has a real authentic feel. The food is amazing. Ask the server about the fish and you won't regret it. They don't have a full bar but it's sort of part of the charm. They are open until midnight whereas other places close at 11. Would eat here every day if I could. This beautifully decorated Greek restaurant is much larger than it looks from the outside! They have a large Main dining room but there are also two huge private rooms in the back. When I dine with these large groups I usually do the family-style ordering. I said, I looked over their menu and picked those menu items because some were fave items and others were new and unusual dishes to me; and no, nobody recommended those dishes. I became concerned, and asked why, are those not good dishes?!?! lol Our waiter said I made excellent choices, and some are their best dishes! It's just that some of the entrees I ordered are not ordered by many, and he was curious as to how I knew about them. They added more tables as guests came and our server was super jovial and accommodating. We ordered an anti pasta of dips, which were all very tasty and garlicky. The restaurant is in a great location with a lot of lively restaurants and eateries nearby. I've had Greek food before, but I was able to try dishes that I've never tried before here. All of the dishes were good, and they gave a complementary dessert at the end of the meal. They actually ran out of dessert pieces when it came to me, and they gave me a different dessert. They said that they will bring me the specialty dessert when they made a new batch. However, as I was leaving the restaurant, the waiter saw me and remembered that I didn't get my specialty dessert.
