From start to finish our experience at St. John's was exceptional. We were quickly seated and decided to start our meal with scallops and the mixed greens with charred okra and dill tahini dressing. Delicious and fresh, every bite was bursting with flavor. We ordered the skirt steak and braised cheek and the halibut for our entrees. The steak, topped with chimichurri and served with horseradish mashed potatoes was outstanding! Rich in flavor, cooked to perfection. The halibut, on the other hand came out dry and the risotto underneath was starchy and not very pleasant. Our server was kind enough to switch our dish to the Roasted chicken breast and I am happy to say it was one of the best chicken dishes I have ever tried. Creamy, delicious sauce simmered with Smokey bacon and shiitake mushrooms, it was the perfect balance to the glistening chicken with crispy, salty skin. We started with a cheese plate- the bread with Brie spread add blueberries and some pumpkin seeds... great flavors! White tablecloth feel. There is a dress code here but we saw people not adhering to it. Nice spot in a great location. There is valet parking here. Service: Our waiter was great. He knew everything on the menu and gave great suggestions. We were never less than a drink of water in our glass. Great attention and service! Food: We started with the fried Brussel sprout salad. Reputation as 1 of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Chattanooga. Been here once before which was solid. Wanted another visit to form an intelligent opinion. I'm in a wordy mood so bear with me. 1) Ambience is all class. Sat at the bar since I'm on my own but what a fantastic date spot this would be or anytime you want to make a strong, positive impression. 2) Good array of cocktails. Last time I had a rum concoction which was extremely well balanced, the Treasure of the Seven Seas. Fall in a glass. It's winter so I went with the Waltz over Whiskey. Easy drinking, moderately sweet but very even, easy sipper. 3) 1st time I had the duck. Very good, not overwhelmed like I like to be by duck. Decided to go small plates this time around. 4) Scallops were perfectly paired and the celery root puree was an unexpected star. The house made cavatelli was rich and delicious. Not sure I could've done better although the pork belly was tempting. Wine selection is ample. Bar well-stocked. Has all the makings of a 5 star evening. P.s. My wife and I are from Nashville, and we attended on a Monday night to celebrate our anniversary. It was wonderful. The atmosphere was quiet and soothing. Our server/bartender (I believe his name was Jonathan), was professional, knowledgeable, and intentional throughout the evening. To start, we enjoyed a cheese spread that really surprised us with the combinations available on the board. It was delicious. We both had filets for our mains, mine medium-rare, and hers medium -- both phenomenal. I can't recommend this place enough. St John's is one of our favorites while visiting Chattanooga. We've been coming for several years and it's always just as good as the time before. They also have great drinks! We had the strawberry toast, roasted chicken, and the pork tenderloin. I've gone gluten free since our last visit and had no problems ordering and the waiter ensured I understood what we could have. I would love for a manager to contact me. My girlfriend and I went to celebrate our anniversary Saturday night and it was, hands down, one of the worst dining experiences of my life. I ordered the wagyu medium. It came out rare - even the waiter said "that looks not even cooked." I asked foe it to be cooked longer. By the time I got my food, my girlfriend had already finished her food (or what she could stomach of it - it was very cold). My second plate was, yet again, under cooked. I could hardly eat it. It was also cold - so I guess the nearly 20 minutes I waited for it, it must have just been sitting out. The waiter was kind, but never asked how our meal was. Arrived on time on this rainy day, and were greeted, and taken to our table. We were skeptical of how things were going to be, as you know, our current climate. Tables were very distant, which kept the ambient very intimate. We got our menus and ordered drinks. And then, appetizers: We ordered the Gulf Shrimp and Pimento cheese Crackers, oh it was delicious, wish we made 2 orders! Also got the smoked pork belly biscuit, just go ahead and get it, pork belly was so tender and soft, it was definitely a treat. Then the main entrees, wife ordered the Seared Duck Breast and Confit, which she referred to as "tastes like Thanksgiving". I just laughed, and tried some, flavor was great, duck was very soft, whole dish was really good. I ordered the Wagyu beef Flat iron steak, and that thing melted in my mouth. Love this restaurant. We visit from NY and make sure we stop in for dinner at least once during our stay. This is top-of the line cuisine, in a wonderful modern and comfy setting with well-trained and friendly staff. You can choose between the more formal restaurant, or the more casual wood and brick Meeting Place. Either way the food is great. This visit with a group of six, and we shared some pork rinds (perfect, light and not greasy) and tuna mousse to start. I felt compelled to have the foie gras with tobasco butter and blue cheese - a unique preparation. Fantastic! What's better than Colorado Lamb tenderloin, cooked perfectly medium rare? Same dish served over a warm rabbit pearl barley is. This was absolutely amazing. They have a terrific (a bit pricey) wine list and a staff wine director to help you with your selections. They have just opened up in the new space on Chestnut Street. We ordered the charcuterie and cheese plate. It was dropped off with no explanation of what was on the plate, very unusual for this level of dining. Also, it was not served with any crostini, crackers or bread. We had to flag someone down after a number of minutes. We finally got some soft bread but that was not what was needed for this charcuterie plate that included mustard and marmalade. I ordered the roasted chicken. It was so salty it was inedible. My friend ordered the duck and it was good. Unfortunately, the server did not check on us for so long it was too late in the dinner to rectify my food situation. We were not charged for my dish but I would have liked dinner. Their system was not yet processing gift certificates, since we had two, we will be going back. Hopefully that evening was just a fluke. This restaurant was easy to find. There was complimentary parking next to the building or valet parking. We reserved our table via OpenTable and were seated immediately upon arrival. The ambience was elegant. The tables were close together and at times I could hear every conversation around me. Our waiter was nice but he was slow. He pretty much had all the tables in our area. Most of the time, it appeared he was giving everyone time to enjoy each other instead of rushing the experience. I can appreciate that. However, one couple next to us finished their dessert 20 minutes ago and still didn't receive their checks. We noticed that and didn't want to sit around that long. So we ask for our check right after we ordered our dessert. That saved us some time. I ordered Beef Filet and my fiancé ordered the Wagyu steak. Both were delicious and tender. The Wagyu was crispy on the exterior and pre cut into thin slices. They were well cooked. We both enjoyed our meals. For dessert, we had the Chocolate cake with Ducle de leches filling and raspberry purée. It was good but very sweet. My fiancée and I went for my birthday. I had the Sea Bass which was delicious and my fiancée had the A5 Waygu Ribeye Steak, which was awful. The experience that my fiancée had with that steak was it was so tough, even the using the knife was hard to cut. We've both had Waygu, in the past, it was not the Waygu we experienced which was very tender melt in your mouth from Guard and Grace in Denver, Colorado. The expectation of the A5 Waygu Ribeye at St. John's Restaurant was a disappointment. This was the very first time we had ever been to St. John's Restaurant. Our recommendation is to take the Waygu off your menu. To the public, save your money and go get a regular Ribeye at Publix, Food City, Costco etc and cook it yourself. You'll be better off. The side room, where we were at, the lighting was way too dark as well. read more

I'm torn... I really wanted to like St. John's a lot, and I did, but, I also didn't. 4 stars is higher than I want to give my experience but 3 stars is too low. Our server was great he was very kind and attentive. The entire staff was great. Multiple times a server that wasn't even ours, topped off our waters as he was filling up his tables waters. Very good service. The ambience was great too. Our table was pretty uneven/wobbly and we were sat in the back corner but it's a Saturday night so I'm not complaining about that. My complaint comes with the food. My wife started with the winter salad and had the pork with truffle risotto for dinner, it was very good but it missed something. I started with the lobster bisque and the wagyu with Job's tears and bok choy....the lobster in the soup was great and the steak was cooked perfectly don't get me wrong but again, it was lacking something, that special "wow" factor. Went tonight for Valentine's Day and it was really nice. The shrimp/pimento cheese appetizer was a delicious start. Followed it up with wagyu steak, cabbage, and jasmine rice cakes. Steak was cooked perfectly!! All dessert are made in house. For dessert we got the crisp apple with vanilla bean ice cream. The graham cracker added a nice crunch. We also got the vanilla almond cake which was very good and moist. Truffles were a dark chocolate. All of the staff were extremely friendly and nice from the hostess to the waiter to the other staff. The hubs and I made a reservation on our last night in Chattanooga. We were greeted immediately upon entering. We were a bit early and had to wait a few minutes for our table. The restaurant is big and is divided into different rooms. There's second floor seating. Sophisticated decor. Love the tall ceiling. Upscale feel. As soon as we were seated, our server came by to introduce himself and take our drink orders: The Bitter End ($13) and a glass of Riesling ($8). To our surprise, the drink orders took a while. I'd say 10-15 minutes. Once he finally returned with our drinks, we ordered the seared foie gras ($23) and I don't remember our exact entree orders but one was a fish dish and the other was a vegetarian dish. They were out of one fish that my husband wanted, but the server offered an alternative. The highlight of the meal was definitely the foie gras. It was creamy and the strawberries, cucumbers, and yogurt went perfectly with it. So good! I do remember the entrees being delicious. We devoured every single bit. The meal was expensive but fair for the flavor and upscale dining experience. We took an uber so I can't speak for the parking. However, I did see a valet nearby. Last night in Chattanooga - decided to go here because a friend raved. He was wrong. It was BETTER than he said. The ambience was nice, classy, linen table cloths, very professional staff - our waiter was Brian - excellent service. The chef sent out a little "Thanks for coming" in the form of a kind of Strawberry Gazpacho - very nice contrast between the sweet flavor a of the fruit and the savory flavor of the gazpacho. Then the appetizer came out - pork belly that was PERFECT - my friend - a foodie from way back - said it was the most perfectly cooked and prepared pork belly he has ever had. I concur. Then out came the mains. I ordered a Bacon wrapped Quail with Wagyu Beef Brisket and it was wonderfully prepared. And it was accompanied by a kind of vegetable succotash on a bed of creamy potatoes or possibly polenta - I'm not sure. Memorable night. This is a perfect "fancy" restaurant without being way over the top! I made a reservation online through Trip Advisor and OpenTable, which was very easy. Just to be sure it went through, I asked my husband to call St. John's to check and the host assured him our reservation for two at 8:30 was set, and that they received the note we would be celebrating our first anniversary. If you plan on doing a classy night out for a celebration, I recommend letting this place know because they will take care of you! They gave us menus with "Happy Anniversary" printed at the top, which was a really nice touch. Then, following our first course, our waiter brought out COMPLIMENTARY scallops from the chef! This was something I was NOT expecting, but very much appreciated! When it comes to the food, I don't even know where to begin. The lobster pumpkin soup I had for my first course was definitely something I never would've tried at home, but the combination of flavors was perfect. The lobster was not fishy at all, nor were the complimentary scallops following. My entree was the free range chicken breast with gnocchi and I don't know that I've had better. The meat was very tender and the gnocchi perfect. My husband had a filet and it was cooked a perfect medium rare. We skipped dessert because there was no way we were going to be able to eat another bite! The menu is seasonal, so don't expect the same options twice. The lighting is romantic, the wait staff are all very courteous, and the food is exquisite. The tops of our paper menus read "Happy Birthday," a subtle attention to detail that was appreciated. Our server was prompt, helpful, and welcoming. Our runners were attentive, tireless, and professional. I ordered a gin and tonic, and my wife ordered her signature Cosmopolitan. First, it is so easy to blow it right out of the gate with a G&T that takes like cheap tonic, but this one let me know that everything was going to be all right - bright and zesty. The homemade bread arrived unsolicited, as it should. Class. We both had summer salads. Here is another way to let you know you are dealing with a staff that is "phoning it in" - your lettuce is wilted or worse rotten, and the whole pile seems like it has been in the cooler overnight. However, these salads were fresh and well-prepared. The pear and blackberry surprisingly paired well with the fontina. My wife ordered the red snapper, which arrived with a homemade Hoppin' John that almost surpassed the fish for taste, but the snapper was flaky and perfectly prepared (another simple but rarely, well-executed dish). I ordered the roasted beef filet, and it was an exceptional medium and piping hot. We ended the meal with a shared crème brulée and two cappuccinos.
