Bottom line I have been back and will be again. The food is creative but still comforting like most of the offerings in Justin Yu's network of partnerships. We really liked the breakfast carbonara, polenta and were fighting for the sourdough (think deconstructed avocado toast). I do have to say the Sammie was recommended but not as exciting as the rest. We went for brunch, have also been for dinner, but prefer brunch. Food: We tried a few different things, but all of them were good to excellent. I'm ranking them from best to worst. 1. Dutch Baby Pancake' This is the best dish I've had at Squable and one of the best dishes for brunch in Houston. The bacon and butter mix so well with the syrup to give a sweet, savory bite of pancake that is delicious for brunch. 2. Oysters Very fresh, not too briny, and ice cold. They are a bit pricey but I would recommend going on Ice Cold Tuesdays to get them half priced. 3. Buttermilk Biscuits Served with strawberry jam and butter, on the flakier side, we love these. They aren't too dense or corn flour flavored, and they are a good thing to have before/after something savory to round your palate out. 4. Breakfast Bolognese This is a really interesting concept as it is a pappardelle pasta with sausage and maple bolognese sauce with an egg on top. Thick noodles that are easy to get with a fork, it's on the richer and savory side. 5. Lobster Roll We liked this mainly for the lobster. The herbs do a good job of making it not a one-bite show. The only critique is that the bun is a bit thin, so any residual juice makes it hard to eat. 6. Hamachi Crudo Clearly, we ordered alot of savory things. This had a citrus flavored sauce and was a fresh punch to cut through the otherwise butter and fat laden meal we had. 7. Beef Fat Tater Tots This was a bit too creamy and drench in sauce. I didn't think that the roe really had a chance to shine in the dish because of that. It also really saturated the tots and ruined a chance at a crisp texture. Service: Excellent service, our drinks were constantly refilled and the dishes came out at a good pace. We've ordered drinks a few times too and those come out fast as well. Ambiance: We've sat both on the shaded patio and indoors. I would definitely recommend the shaded patio. There's fans and an ambient A/C that keep it cool, even when the temperature was 85F+. I have to say that Squable has some very innovative dishes that I've literally seen nowhere else, so props for pushing the envelope. That being said, I'm not sure that everything hit. But the service was amazing, the quality of each dish was fantastic, and the venue is nice - intimate but not stuffy. Very appropriate for that part of town. The food: We were there on a Tuesday with half price oysters and martinis so I had some of both. Excellent quality for the oysters (New Jersey - who knew they even had oysters there), and my martini was a proper one which is hard to find these days. The oysters were served with a creamy sauce, while delicious, didn't really go with raw oysters. It would have been more appropriate with something fried. Also got the kanpachi crudo small plate. Very good and beautifully plated - maybe a little overly fruit-forward but definitely worth ordering for a light bite. Marinated mussels were interesting - we expected a garlic butter type sauce. This was served more as a cold salad on hot grilled bread. The bread was fantastic. The mussels were fine but I wouldn't order them again. Lamb ribs - tasted pretty much like any other ribs you'd have, lamb or otherwise. I thought they were fine, my husband deemed them inedible! Apparently to "chewy and smoky" - which I thought was all ribs but what do I know. Roasted squash - was expecting butternut or something of the sort but got zucchini which is fine; perhaps they just use whichever kind of squash is good that time of year. It's a great dish but I did find it odd that it was festooned with pickled blackberries. The combo was okay but we ended up picking off the blackberries and just having the zucchini in the cheesy sauce. We arrived without a reservation and were able to score outside bar seats. This is a family share type of place where they suggest you order at least 4-5 things. We ordered the greens, oysters, Dutch baby pancake & lobster roll. The greens came first and were very refreshing. The oysters delicious and the Dutch baby pancake stole the show! One thing's for sure--there's no Squable about this spot being one of the best eats I've had in a long time. The food here is fantastic! We went for Sunday brunch, and while there was a nice crowd, we were seated pretty quickly for a party of two without a reservation. Now, let's jump into the goodies. We kicked things off with a classic cocktail--The Gibson. We weren't able to try the Pearl Gibson (the one with the oyster on the half shell), but the regular version was fantastic--well-made and perfectly balanced. My husband went with an Espresso Martini, which was smooth, well-balanced, and just the right amount of indulgent. For our eats, we had the Mussels on Grilled Bread and the Dutch Baby Pancakes. And let me tell you--what universe did I just step into? Because I've never seen, heard of, or tasted anything like this before. It. Was. Fantastic. If it weren't so heavy on the carbs, I think I could eat these two dishes daily. The mussel bread was savory, with a surprisingly perfect balance between the mussels and the beans. Every bite had both flavors shining through in the most unexpected yet delicious way. The pancake? Forget what you know about traditional pancakes--this one had crispy edges and a texture closer to a pastry than a flapjack. As someone who isn't usually a fan of pancakes, this was a game-changer. Because the photo of the burger is almost worth the trip alone. --- --- --- I have had Squable bookmarked for a while now, and it was for one reason: that absolutely incredible-looking burger. When I would be in Houston for some reason, I'd always pour through my bookmarks and decide which of the hundred places I wanted to try. Squable was ALWAYS tempting because of that burger photo, but I finally was just able to stop in recently after working an event downtown. It turns out that the burger does not quite meet the hype, in practice. After the first bite I took, I was pretty impressed. But then, as I continued on, my satisfaction lessened a bit. I think it was the pickles on the burger that I didn't love. But these pickles don't taste like typical pickles. Truthfully, I only knew that they were pickles because the menu lists the following next to the burger: "stout beef patty, raclette, butter, pickles, fries", and those green things sure weren't anything else listed there. I actually thought they were some kind of weird pepper, but a menu has never lied to me. The fries were pretty forgettable, to be honest. They came with a sauce that seemed more like a mayo than anything else. It's definitely a healthy portion, as I only ate like half and had plenty. When it arrived, we weren't instructed that the martini was served on ice and the glass to the side was with our gin/vodka. Been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got the chance with a good friend. To start, we took advantage of their drinks on happy hour and ordered a dirty martini. They serve it in a smaller martini glass and give you a mini carafe on ice so you can refill the glass yourself. If you want drinks from the happy hour menu you have to sit at the bar from 4pm-6pm so get there early as the bar filled up fast. For appetizers, we ordered the kanpachi crudo, fried fish, and dumplings. The fried fish is a must! The outside had the most satisfying crunch and the fish itself was super moist and flaky. The dumplings had a nice ricotta filling with mild lemon zesty flavor and the hen broth was very light. I think it needed a tiny bit more salt for my preference but I still enjoyed it. My least favorite was the kanpachi crudo. Presentation was beautiful and the other components of the dish were good but the fish tasted too fishy and not worth the price. We also shared the malfaldine pasta and salmon dish. The pork and duck ragu in the pasta reminded me of barbacoa meat. The paste is coated in a cream/gravy sauce and topped with cheese. Everything here was absolutely delicious, from the wine to the food to the cute little hidden drawer in the table for the silverware! We got three small plates: chicken liver pate with jam and sourdough focaccia bread, beef fat tater tots with shaved truffles and mornaise sauce, and then the baked oysters with caviar. The bread and pate with jam with so delectable that we had to hold back from eating too much of it and getting full before the main plate arrived, and the tots were a guilty pleasure! After couple failed attempts to secure a prime time reservation, we finally had the chance to check out Squable. Located in the Heights off of 19th St, limited parking is available in the adjacent small lot or on the streets near by. This cozy neighborhood restaurant serves casual European food with American influences. Our party of four followed the recommendation to share the dishes family-style to fully explore the menu. Cocktails: Nice flavors and presentation, but a bit less on the quantity and alcohol content for $15 per drink. Appetizers: we tried the chicken liver pate, marinated mussels, beef tartare, gold rice, and smoked sweet potato. My personal favorite was the marinated mussels, good flavors and texture with a generous amount of mussels. The gold rice had very solid flavor but the portion was pretty small, for a $16 dish, we each barely got a spoon full. Other appetizers were satisfactory but lack the wow factor. Main plates: we ordered mafaldine pasta, local mushrooms and French cheeseburger. The pasta was the best of the three. The bed of veggies/ mushroom soup base in the local mushroom was quite salty. The cheeseburger was overcooked (ordered medium rare as recommended but came out medium well) and overly cheesy for my personal taste. The side of fries came out separate and at least 10 minutes after we already finished the burger. While the location, ambiance and menu make Squable a nice option for a date night, the items we tried so far falls short of giving us reasons to frequently revisit. Having passed by multiple times, it's nice to finally see what all the commotion was about on the inside. It's an upscale casual European/American dining experience that is best done with another couple or some friends. Plenty of parking outside in the dedicated lot, no valet required. They recommend doing family/tapas style and it makes sense, as the portions can be quite small with a few of these dishes. The real way to experience this is just by ordering anything that kinda catches your eye and to order outside of your comfort zone. The best things I had here are the items I wouldn't have typically gravitated towards, and I was rewarded for being adventurous. Some stand outs for me were the mussel toast, truly an insane amount of mussels piled on top here and an umami bomb of flavor to go with it. Sneaky good local mushrooms, didn't think this would amount to much, but I found myself coming back to this plate a lot. The beef carpaccio was paired with a nice sourdough and had some addictive layers of taste that I kept snacking on. A couple things were just good, but didn't scratch any culinary itches for me, and when you have a menu that's this tight they kinda stick out for not shining as brightly. I think the hit rate for the food items might have been 50/50 in terms of bangers/non-bangers. The drinks weren't as strong as you'd hope at $15+ a pop. Had 2 over the course of an hour and the expected buzz never materialized, they tasted good though. If the menu rotates pretty regularly, as I assume it does with the seasonal flair it appears to have, I'd come back to see what's new. read more

I have heard great things about the restaurant and ultimately it was to also celebrate a close friend's achievement. The restaurant was a bit of a trip but it is in a nice area around the Heights area. Dining inside was already taken and sat with the outside tables. But it was nice and shaded. The restaurant has this nice greenhouse look to it. Everything on the menu was interesting but was drawn to the French cheeseburger. The portion is a first for me. I am accustomed to a monstrosity of a burger with super thick fries. But this was smaller yet flavorful, dedicate and that melty raclette was amazing. I don't reach for mayonnaise for fries often but I could get used to it. We did also received the budino dessert. Light, pleasant, and a great way to end the meal. A chocolate mousse with the hazelnut pieces. The staff at Squable are great too. Everyone from the wait staff and food runners. Michelle was our server and she was very attentive to us the whole time. Very nice and friendly. Eileen was also one of the staff that was amazing too. She was helpful to answer any questions we had on the menu. Both were great and made the experience worthwhile. Overall I enjoyed my visit to Squable. It is a nice place for those brunch outings. I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and we had a wonderful time! The service was great and from what my friend's shared, the food was delicious. Unfortunately, due to the number of dietary restrictions I have, there wasn't many options that I could I actually have, so my review is not indicative of the typical person's experience here. I ended up ordering the "crisp greens with a zippy vinaigrette" (against my better judgement), and the vinaigrette was definitely zippy. It was both sour and acidic, which made it difficult to finish, much less enjoy. Unfortunately, this salad only comes with goat cheese and they were unable to add any additional toppings or protein to it, which might have helped. We've been to Squable approximately 2 times a year since they opened in 2019. I noticed that I haven't posted a review since my first visit. Figured I'd update my review based on our recent visit and say that Squable still has it going on. For a two top, I suggest making reservations at the bar. You get a good view of the kitchen, and its enjoyable to watch the busy bar staff do their thing. Squable has a great martini program with interesting garnishes. I went with the Gibson that came with an east coast oyster garnish and the traditional cocktail onion. Very good cocktail. My wife went with the "Rhapsody in Rouge" which is another gin based cocktail served up. She reported back that it was very good. Eric our bartender/server was very attentive and also very knowledgeable of the food. We ordered the Scallop Crudo, the poached leeks, meatballs, chitarra alle vongole, and the ribeye with Lobster. I thought each dish was good to very good. My wife didn't really care for the texture of the Scallop crudo. We both agreed the best dishes were the Chitarra alle Vongole and the Steak and Lobster dish. It was an added plus that the clams were well melded into the pasta and we didn't have to deal with pulling them out of their shells like some more traditional takes on the dish. For the Surf and Turf, both the ribeye and lobster were cooked perfectly, and the sauce for the steak was outstanding. You can never go wrong finishing with the Dessert Bread. Le sigh. After seeing Squable on various "best restaurants in Houston" lists and having friends recommend it, we were excited to try it out. We were pretty disappointed. I'd recommend reservations- we made one a couple days prior to our Saturday night visit. There's ample self parking, which is nice. It looked like they also had a really nice covered patio with space heaters. Service was good, but slowed down toward the end. After not seeing anything that stood out to her on the menu, my wife asked for a sweet gin or vodka based cocktail and they delivered! She really enjoyed their version of a Charlie Chaplain. The first two starters we had were good - we got the red snapper crudo and the dumplings. My wife is a dumplings fan in general and she was pretty happy with her choice. We then got the charred broccoli, which was pretty bad. I'd rate it a 1/5 - we haven't come across many places where we've been that surprised by a dish. Firstly, the broccoli was nowhere near charred - it was closer to being raw, and then it just had uncooked spices sprinkled on top. We love charred broccoli and we love good zataar - but this wasn't that. We then got the mafaldine pasta, which also wasn't great. My wife described it as pasta with hamburger helper. She gave it a 2/5. We also got the mushrooms, which was pretty good - 4/5. It was just a bit salty, but otherwise, if you are a mushroom fan, I'd recommend it. Got the roast chicken (half a chicken, it didn't say that on the menu, nor did I want a half of chicken), malfaldine (very good), kanpachi crudo (sushi basically)--it was good, beef tartare (it was good), charred broccoli, which was good too. Do NOT order the "bread pudding"....it is literally a slice of bread with a thick layer of charred sugar (think crême brûlee, but more break your teeth style), and a scoop of butter pecan (?) ice cream on top, the ice cream was good. Ate here a while ago with my mother. We sat at the bar out of convenience. I've eaten here a few times before and each time has been quite nice. The broccoli is divine! We always end up getting the marinated mussels because the crispy bread with the beans and sauce is just so good! The crudo was something new for me, and the citrus complimented the fish nicely. The grapefruit and radishes were a surprising combination and were delicious as usual. The dessert bread was scrumptious, but we thought it could use a little fruit or tartness to make it a little lighter. The service at Squable has always been good in my experience. The bartender was very kind and attentive. The place wasn't extremely busy at the time we ate, so it was a very pleasant experience. read more

The food is so good here, I was in heaven. Got the Turkish Eggs and Dutch Pancake for Sunday Brunch. The service was also amazing... I came before my flight back home and the gentleman at the front (super nice) offered to hold my suitcase up at the front while I dined. Sat at the bar and the staff kept checking on me. Even staff members who weren't my server were checking up on me. Shoutout to Alejandra, she was so sweet. But seriously the food was great Best food & service in Houston read more

I have been wanting to come here forever, and I was so excited. My friend and I came here on Sunday for their brunch menu. Made a resy online, would recommend that. The place is not very big inside. There is bar seating. They do have nice covered outdoor seating with fans for the TX heat. As well as outside non-covered seating in an open patio area in the far back. We satĺ in the covered patio. Drinks- After a convo with our beautiful server Natlie, she ordered me an off-menu cocktail that was delicious, Plinys Tonic. I ordered a 2nd drink, also her recommendation. It was refreshing, but not as good at the first, I must say. It was Mexican Diablo with tequila. Honestly, I would come back if they have a HH just for the drinks to try more. Food - She helped us figure out the menu and what she suggested. She encouraged sharing the meal. I was fine with that, to be able to try more items. We ordered 3 small plates, plus that brunch burger with the egg. The first plate was the Yellowtail dish, so refreshing and light, fantastic starter. Then the Marinated Mussels, this was on toasted homemade bread. The flavors just worked together. Cold mussels, I am a fan now. It was excellent. I wish we had ordered 2 plates of marinated mussels. The last small plate was the Grapefruit dish. This was our least favorite. I love grapefruit, so I was excited because there are hardly any dishes that have grapefruit in them. The dish did not come together. It tasted like separate ingredients that didn't like each other and did not want to. The radishes and grapefruit not friends. The tarragon vinagrette did nothing, even the crunch of the hazelnut could not pull the taste together. Would not recommend. Our main entree, le Brunch Burger, was delicious. I wish it was bigger, too small! Comes with fried egg and super saucy, decadent. I want to come back for the dinner service burger in hopes that it is bigger. Service- was excellent. Natalie, our server was fantastic, friendly and warm. All the staff that came to clear plates and fill water, etc, were great. I appreciate the 5 star service! Overall, it was a really solid meal, with fantastic service. Reminds me of Nancy's in a lot of ways. Would love to come back. read more
