Time for an updated review. It's safe to say this is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. Love some of the staples but also trying new additions. Today I finally came for brunch. The Focaccia ragu situation is lovely, and the bitter greens salad currently is a fave. The French toast is great for sharing as dessert. There is no valet, small lot with overflow able to park in the empty lot behind ( a sign said la lucha and superica but the attendant said we were fine), and street parking. First time I went there, I got food poisoning for 3 days and had to go to the ER. I let the store know via e-mail and was ignored - don't know what I was expecting I guess. Against my wishes, went there again yesterday since my wife wanted to go. Did not have a reservation so sat outside at the patio bar. Got to see how the food was prepared through the window unfortunately. They like to taste the salad while preparing it which I thought was odd. I also witnessed plating of the mussels onto the plate. The plates are stacked under the table. They were stacked too high so upon putting the mussels on the plate, all of the mussels were brushed against under the table. Gross but I guess that's acceptable for them. Glad it wasn't ours. Also ordered the $62 wagyu. Ordered medium. Came out rare but tried it anyway. So chewy and could barely cut the meat. We left half of it uneaten and let the waiter know. He said it was his mistake - he put the order in as medium-rare instead of medium. Doesn't even matter because that meat was RARE. Zero compensation although the waiter was apologetic. I guess that's our fault for not complaining about it the second we got it. Waiter was nice but after coming here two times and spending $140+ for two people each time - getting sick as a dog once and not being able to finish their most expensive main it's enough for me to have to write this crap. read more

Squable is a trendy, European-inspired small plates restaurant in the Heights neighborhood. It features a really big drink menu, including cocktails, Japanese Whiskeys, etc. The restaurant is pretty small inside, and if you have a large group like 12 people they'll seat you outside on a long table with heat lamps. Our big group shared several apps, while ordering individual entrees, drinks, and dessert. I liked most of the appetizers, but my entree just met expectations, so 3 stars overall. Appetizers: * The Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Pork was a great combination - sweet and savory. * Dutch Baby Pancake can almost be an early dessert. I liked how it was shaped like a bowl where they add jam or other goodies. * Braised Greens were okay for your veggie fix, though I found it more tart and vinegary. Entree * Half our table ordered the Gulf Snapper filet. I actually liked the flavors and the puree on the fish, but for me I found the texture to be on the dry side. Others in my table commented their fish was on the salty side. Mine was not overly salty, but I did expect the fish to be more moist. One other delta is that the fish is served ala carte. If you want sides, they should be ordered separately if your apps run out. We would up sharing the fries from a colleague who ordered the French Burger. Dessert * I got the Budino, basically a chocolate mousse topped with cream and nuts. Decent dessert though others at my table raved about this Deconstructed Bread Pudding. Heard amazing things about this place so had to try it! Tried Kanpachi Krudo for appetizer, little bit more fishy than normal kanpachi i experienced from sushi restaurant. Their pancakes were very interesting, had açaí seeds so texture was not the best. Their oyster was infused with coconut milk, tasted like Thai curry on oyster, probably my favorite. Overall ambiance was very cozy, had great time with friends. Downside, resy requires you to put money for reservation on the card in case you cancel. If you are a bit traditional, better go to Snooze or Backstreet cafe for brunch, but if you are a bit more adventurous, you will appreciate the eclectic dish read more

Squable has been on the radar for a while and having lived inside the Heights since 2019, it was due time to check it out. We had a party of 4 and I made a reservation a couple weeks ahead of time on resy. Very interesting to me was their clause that if there's a no show for the reservation, a penalty of $5/person will be enacted and you are forced to give your credit card info to resy. Having been to various upscale and finer dining establishments, this is a first to me, and while I understand that no shows are not ideal for business, this was a bit off putting for me as I really don't feel like sharing credit card information to more 3rd party vendors than we already are forced to. Located on 19th and Shepherd, Squable is nested between Take 5 Oil Change and Spices 39 in a rather long building. There is a small adjacent lot that we luckily found parking in; free street parking is the other option. The interior is a rustic and modern aesthetic, somewhat similar to the style of a Nancy's Hustle or a Tiny Champions. We were seated at a window side booth and our server was on it with describing the menu and the dishes. I was surprised when he recommended ordering around 8 dishes for the group of 4 of us. We ended up eating everything family style between the group although some of the dishes were very difficult to split due to their portion size. The portions for each dish was much, much smaller than any of us expected. Their menu is very compact, which is great. It's printed on decent card stock and is free of clutter like too many menus out there that have way too many items. Reviewing each dish that we ordered as below; Cocktails Various - $15 - 4/5. Served in very petite glasses but a bit stiff for a few ounces of liquid at $15. Apps Chicken liver pate $15 - 3/5. The pate was a bit less rich than expected and I was personally not too big a fan of the seasonal jam. The color was kind of off putting and looked like baby food; I could also not tell what fruit that the jam was comprised of. The portions were also pretty small but that trend is present across their menu. Marinated mussels on grilled bread $17 - 4/5. This was probably the best tasting of the appetizers; the mussels were cooked well and the grilled bread open faced sandwich was good; I just wished the portion was a bit better. Beef tartare $18 - 4/5. Beef tartare with sauce with a piece of sourdough. This tasted like a solid tartare! Mesquite smoked sweet potato $14 - 3/5. This missed the mark for me but others at the table seemed to like it. Buttered Charleston Gold Rice - $16. 3/5 purely for the tiny, tiny portion. Flavor was solid but I swear it was one bite per person. Main Entrees Mafaldine pasta $32 - 4/5. Again, pasta is cooked well and the flavors go well but it's $32 for a small dish of pasta, which feels somewhat excessive to me personally. Local mushrooms and field peas $26 - 3/5. The chanterelle mushrooms were breaded and fried on top of a bed of veggies. The fried mushrooms were solid but had a bit too much salt. The broth underneath was a bit bland and honestly reminded me a bit of a canned vegetable soup of some kind. Not the biggest fan of this dish. French cheeseburger $20 - 3.5/5. We were recommended to order this burger a medium rare and we were given a burger (roughly the size of a slider) that was cooked roughly at a medium well and overcooked for a patty. Due to its small size, dividing it into four is roughly one bite per person. After we finished it, we were served the fries roughly 10 minutes later; kind of a bummer that they weren't sync'ed together. Overall Thoughts It's a chic, cool, aesthetic spot in the Heights serving a unique spin on a European/American based menu. The cost basis for the dishes compares to the other higher end aesthetic spots in town but dish portions were extremely smaller than expected. Not a lot bang for the buck. The individual dishes were a bit hit and miss for me; some were delicious and some were a bit average on taste and execution of the dish. We ordered a good portion of the dinner menu but we didn't taste anything that I feel like will be craved at a later time. For the same dollar, I feel like both the taste and quality are a bit below expectations having been to a few restaurants that I would consider its peer restaurants. It's definitely an impressive spot for a weekend date but make sure you only order the heavy hitters and don't come with a hungry belly. read more

After all these years, Squable still never fails me, whether I'm entertaining out-of-town guests or enjoying a cozy date night. Across double-digit visits, however, I have come to harbor certain opinions about their highly technical, chef-driven menu: 1) the meat dishes are solid, but the seafood and vegetarian-forward offerings are even better, 2) they operate on the saltier end of the spectrum (a waitress told me last time that "Chef Mark loves salt"), which suits my palate just fine but may rub more sodium-sensitive folk the wrong way, and 3) what some plates lack in size, they make up for via richness and diversity of flavor/texture, so don't be afraid to go for some of the more diminutive options. The front patio is quite nice and fully enclosed with heat lamps on standby, so fair game regardless of weather. The cocktails are pricey ($15 each) but well-crafted and unique. I particularly like the Elbow Room, a fantastically balanced spirit-forward concoction containing calvados, genepy, and yuzu. They recently revamped the menu, so this review reflects their new fare: Chicken Liver Pate - Excellent starter to kick things off. The potent spread was sweet, creamy, and funky, offset by a sweet jam. Raw Bluefin Tuna - nice refreshing summer bite between the crisp raw fish and pops of orange with lemon zest. Great deal given the fat pieces of tuna. Fried Shrimp Cocktail - I underestimated this one and boy was it delicious. So simple and classic yet prepared with impeccable technique. The tempura-battered exterior was super crunchy, the flesh inside was soft and meaty. The texture contrast was incredible. Buttered Charleston Gold Rice - elevated comfort food in the form of a creamy and decadent risotto topped with a savory oxtail stew and charred green onion stalks. Strong dish. Marinated Mussels on Grilled Bread - this is a staple and something we never skip because it's just that good. The fragrant mussels are steamed in white wine and herbs and somehow are a match made in heaven for these thick garlicky beans. The whole thing is served cold with a sprinkle of parsley and dill. Guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Corned Duck Breast - not the most creative dish, but well executed as per usual. The sweet bird was delightfully juicy, and the accompaniments - parsnip puree and a carrot mustard - brought some pungent and buttery flavors to the table. Poached Leeks - the flavors here were phenomenal, between the funky and cheesy buttermilk sauce, dill, croutons, and black pepper, but I wish the leeks were a little more tender rather than crunchy. Tater Tots - decided to splurge for this insanely luxurious side, which comes topped with a cognac hollandaise, smoked trout roe, and chives. The square tots, cooked in bacon fat, were crispy as all get-out and predictably mind-blowing. Are they worth $50? That's for you to judge - I was certainly not disappointed. Local Mushrooms - extra hearty vegetarian main plate that is an umami explosion. Healthy char on the shrooms and a variety of textures make this dish come to life. Seared Ora King Salmon - Really tasty with a classic beurre blanc, but ultimately not as interesting to me as some of the other dishes on the menu. Mafaldine pasta - Rich, hearty, and sizeable pasta with a funky and earthy meat sauce. No complaints. Get the Pain de Mie dessert and thank me later. read more

We visit Squable at least once a month on Friday evenings. We often sit at the bar and get excellent service. Can't miss the lasagna. In spite of it being veggie lasagna it is the best in the city! The local mushrooms are a favorite, too, for the incredible flavors. Broccoli is also a regular for us. And we enjoy the seasonal small plates. Last night we had the roasted butternut squash - more incredible flavors. Please don't ever take the lasagna or the mushrooms off the regular menu!!! read more

Visited this spot on a Sunday afternoon around 2 and they were busy for Brunch. Modern Decor with an inviting Bar area as well double section outdoor seating. We started with cocktails. Smitten -delicious and lived up to the "you'll like it if you're a fan of Negroni and Aperol Spritz" billing. Watermelon Margarita was tasty and was enjoyed. Their French cheeseburger was listed on "Top 10 Houston Burgers" (Culture Map Tastemaker Awards) so of course we ordered it. It sounded like a very rich/decadent Burger so we went for just one to share. Smaller than we thought and slightly bigger than a Slider. That said, tasty Burger with quality/Stout Beef and lived up to the decadent billing given the Raclette Cheese. Our server asked us if we were ok with our Burger cooked Medium Rare-yes we are. To our surprise it came out closer to medium well. Fries came with Mayo which was fine given the Euro theme. That said, fries were not fresh cut and didn't deserve to be served with this Burger. Is it a Top 10 Burger? Maybe-definitely unique and can live with the size given "French" but we have to find a better side/compliment Squable. We also ordered the Mussels Toast. Yes, this one was a hit. Large Mussels with the Calico Beans taking it over the top. We saw a few other dishes that we will definitely try next time. I finally was able to make my way to Squabble and I was not disappointed. The staff was very friendly and we were promptly seated upon arrival. As usual, my first order of business was to get some alcohol on the table - this time in the form of a bottle of red wine. They had some great selections but ultimately went for a bottle of their Skinner, a California Mourvèdre. This turned out to be a great choice! As for food, we started with the marinated mussels. Mussels were cooked perfectly. Who would have thought that beans, mussels, and bread would go so well together? Next we had the casarecce, their take on a pesto pasta. The pistachios in the dish provided a very unique and flavorful pasta. Lastly we had the lamb shoulder and what can I say, it was a great way to close the meal. Hasan explained to that the items are small and are considered to be shared. Now for eats; the sourdough bread, chicken wings and their pears (under the sweets section). Chicken wings- my favorite. Crispy on the outside. Moist on the inside. These were HUGE pieces of wings too. Huge! When we first got the wings a waft of Indian spices came to my nose and I was uncertain, but I was wrong. The yogurt that comes with it, trust me, you don't need it. Pears- chef's kiss. A cold cold dish. About 3 pears on top. Topped with a crispy sorta nut. On a cool white yogurt/cream, drizzled with the juice from the pear and Carmel. This is the perfect after meal dessert. Sourdough bread- it's a bread with the outside texture of a bagel. Comes with the a cream cheese/butter spread. The bread is extremely fluffy. All in all definitely a 5/5 experience. read more

I set high expectations for this restaurant and my dining experience surpassed them. Our waitress, Marcela, was attentive and the employees made the atmosphere such a comforting place to be in. You could tell all the staff were super close and love their jobs. In addition, the food came out really fast and every dish was so delicious. My favorite dish had to be their famous French Cheeseburger. This was one of the best burgers I've ever had in my entire life. The raclette made the burger was rich and decadent, I was full from a few bites it. It had some sort of sauce similar to a chimichurri, and was unique, nothing compared to other burgers I've had in the past. In addition, the stout beef patty was cooked to a perfect medium rare. Another honorable mention was the Beef Tartare with Tonnato Tartar Sauce and Sourdough. The beef was super tender and the sauce was flavorful. Friend and I went and got their dutch baby pancakes and potato hash - both of which were fantastic. Flavor profiles are on point and you'd be surprised how filling these dishes are! He checked on our table frequently and made sure our glasses were always filled with water, even though they were completely packed with people during brunch. I do like fresh herbs. If you love dill, this might very well be your new spot. My guess is they negotiated a fresh dill futures contract and they are obligated to try and use 4 bushels per day. -Horrible customer service & hostess! -Walked in empty restaurant at 5p to be told I needed to sit at a certain table due it being assigned to a server, when I asked to be seated at a more preferred location I was told a server was not assigned. No mentioned that it was reserved for party w/reservations. -After being annoyed of seating arrangement and learning of happy hour only at bar, I decided to sit at bar but purposely was put by kitchen. Again bar empty w/exception of one person sitting at bar who was finishing up. - Witnessed employee packing dry pasta with bare hands and putting into plastics containers. Finally came to squable after so many attempts which feel like may have been foiled because of the pandemic. Parking is plenty but still scant due to how popular this place can be at peak dinner time. I ended up parking on the street. Upon arrival I was the first of our party of four and was swiftly seated. I ordered a Levity which has gin and earl grey. I absolutely loved it but after my first sip I felt something in my mouth. To my surprise it was a hair. Thankfully this was promptly dealt with and we were not charged for this. But I was very disgusted and wanted to leave. However, my friends started to come in soon after this and we ended up staying and I am so glad that I was able to go in to rinse my mouth to let the feasting begin. MUST HAVES: 1. Gourgeres 2. Roasted cauliflower 3. Roasted gulf snapper I have not had a good gourgeres in years and years. And it's not because there aren't good places that make it. It's because we don't have any places that make it. That alone wiped my memory clean of the earlier mishap. It's a definite must have and you can thank me later. The roasted cauliflower at first bite tasted almost like a Brussels sprouts dish but soon once you got to the bottom of it there were pieces of the crusty bits made with anchovies and the Moroccan spices. I was not expecting to love it as much as I did. Literally cleaned the plate up. The roasted gulf snapper comes with a celery root purée that is literally to die for!!! My beef rib dish came out a little later than I was expecting. They did say that the food will come out as it is ready so I was prepared for that but not like when everyone's food was more than half way eaten. It was really liked by half the company at the table. While I thought it was tasty, I much rather will order the fish next time as it reminded me of a pho influenced dish and made me really long for the noodles. The radish dish was nice and so were the oysters that come with the pickle shot. Dessert was enjoyed by the table but I really only LOVED the roasted hazelnuts on the fondant. The bread dessert was too sweet for me when eaten with the ice cream. Overall I had my favorites and I will be coming back to have some more soon in the near future! read more

I'm usually not a fan of beans but the calico beans & bonito aioli added an extra layer of umami to the dish. This 4 piece pre-sliced toast is a bit heavy. The bread is thick to hold up all the toppings (4/5): PORK & BEEF MEATBALLS: 5 delicious hearty meatballs served on a creamy potato puree ENTREE (3/5): BLACK TRUFFEL GIGLI: Very rich & decedent, similar to an elevated Mac & cheese. A tab too salty, not my favorite. They served it in the same dishware as the appetizers so there wasn't much room for scooping to share (4/5): LEG OF LAMB STEAK: Served with a side of chickpea frites. The lamb was cooked very well, the chickpea frites could have been more crispy. I recently dined at Squable with two friends and was very impressed. While the food was good (I'll get to that in a minute), the service was exceptional. Our waiter, Connor, was not only patient but warm and engaging. He walked me through the whole menu, highlighting what I could eat given my gluten allergy. He was incredibly attentive, even as we were the last people at the restaurant by the end of our dinner. As far as food goes, we ordered several small dishes, one pasta dish, two large dishes, and two desserts between three people. We could've probably ordered one less small dish. -Gougeres: didn't personally eat (b/c gluten) but friends loved these -"Simple" green salad: INCREDIBLE. I know, it's just a salad, but so fresh and the best vinegarette. Definitely one of the highlights of the meal. -Roasted cauliflower: tasty but on the salty side -Roasted sweet potatoes: the glaze on them was divine and the pork belly was delicious -Pappardelle: didn't eat this one (b/c gluten) but friends ate it very quickly -Gigante beans: delicious, although I'd say having both the fried feta and the olives made it too salty for my liking -Roast chicken: moist, flavorful chicken; a bit too much pork belly, esp since we had it earlier -Chocolate fondant: brownie-like cake with delicious cream and raspberry sauce -Panna cotta: didn't try myself, but friend enjoyed it a lot, especially the shortbread cookie pieces Overall, it was a good dining experience, and I'd definitely return to try their brunch menu. read more

Squable delivered. I am obsessed with Terry's Martini - both the perfect blend of gin and vermouth and the plating with accompanying snacks. Perfection. We didn't have a dish that we didn't like. We ordered oysters with pickle juice shooters, the muscle toast (amazing), Dutch baby pancake, pappardelle, the snapper, gigante beans, and the short rib. We devoured every. single. bite. We ended with a choc hazelnut bundino situation that was the perfect punctuation to a fabulous meal. The service was attentive and so friendly. WOW! Service was wonderful, food was delicious, and experience was 5 star. We tried a little bit of everything on the menu to get the full experience. The plates were very well done. I don't think there was anything I did not like. Good idea to go with a group so everyone can try the full menu. I would definitely recommend! Two highlights: Radiatore- Such a pleasant combination of flavors, I could've eaten 5 plates of it. brioche dessert bread- The cherry on top!
