I've been to plenty of upscale restaurants, but this was the most disappointing experience I've had. It wasn't about food or the ambience of the restaurant. This was mainly on communication with the service. So to start off, I was looking for a nice elegant restaurant to celebrate my birthday. And I stumbled upon Chardon. It looked very beautiful online. I saw plenty of reviews that complemented the space on the elegance so I decided to call in and reserve for a party of 10 .The lady who answered was happy to accommodate me with my party and reserved a time for my party over the phone. She mentioned if we were going to be there for happy hour since we were arriving between 4:00pm to 4:30pm and happy hour ended at 5:00pm. I told her no we were not there for happy hour. We were gathering to celebrate my birthday. She then asked if I wanted to be seated by the bar space or in a private area. I chose a private area because it was for a special event so I wanted to be sure that my group has privacy. When we got there, they ended up seating us literally about 10 feet away from the bar. So I brought up my concern to the restaurant especially since I noticed they had private rooms . I was wondering why we didn't get seated there instead . Because currently where we were sitting at was not private. It felt like we were in the main area with tables all around . So I didn't understand what "private" meant to them. So ofcourse I brought it up to their attention. They admitted that it was a miscommunication on their end, but that the private rooms were contracted only and you have to spend a minimum of $1500 in alcohol drinks alone. We were never told any of this over the phone. So that was very disappointing that the communication of " privacy " was not explained well at the beginning. Then, whenever my boyfriend came in with the birthday cake, they told him that they would accept the cake and they will hold it back in the fridge however, when it came time to cutting the cake, they were going to charge a $5 fee per slice that they serve per guest. That was very inconvenient because no where that I've ever been ,even in upscale restaurants, have charged to serve your own cake. And I couldn't leave it in the car because it was cheesecake and it would've gotten bad . Had I have known all of this, I would've planned my birthday dinner very differently. Besides that I got the Steak Frites. The fries that came with it was really good. And it came with the aïoli sauce to dip it the fries with . The steak had a good texture and it was very tender. However, I will say I heard a lot of hype around the bread and whip butter that they serve complementary at the beginning. The butter was great, but the bread I kind of felt it more on the tougher in, so I was disappointed with the texture of that. Overall, like I mentioned the ambience of the place , the decor, and the service was great. It was just very inconvenient for those things to happen on my birthday dinner . So I just wanted to write this review in hopes that it can help someone in the future that is planning a party or a gathering there so they know the regulations ahead of time. read more

I love a good French restaurant, But I was not too impressed with this one. Now I'll give it to them, the service was excellent, our server was amazing and probably the one of the best servers i have had in a while. What I didn't like was that there were rules when ordering. I had met a friend there and we were really in no rush to order but when we sat down, we were told that we have to order everything all at once because the chef likes to portion it out and we cant order an appetizer and then order dinner later. I really wanted an appetizer, but I just didn't really know what I wanted to eat at that time so eventually, we just asked if they could make an exception since we came at an early time and it wasn't rush-hour. There were like four people in the restaurant and it wasn't crazy packed yet. They did let me order my appetizer first . But just knowing that, makes me not wanna go back there. I understand why they do it, but to the customer it's a little annoying. The restaurant ambience is nice, I wish they had booths though, they have like half booths and nowhere does it really seem intimate or a little bit private. Wasn't too thrilled on the chairs and the comfortability of the furniture . It's kind of basic inside. Parking is kind of hard. Chardon is located within the Thompson Hotel but felt much more intentional than a typical hotel restaurant. I recommend the valet parking for $10 when dining. It did add a little time, but was worth the low stress since there is not much available parking in the area. The interior of Chardon was incredible polished! Leaning into the French vibes with beautiful furniture, archways, bar, and flowers. I sat at the booths just adjacent to the bar and loved this spot for a casual yet classy atmosphere. For a Thursday early afternoon, there were more diners than I had anticipated and gradually got busier throughout the evening which lended to a very nice ambiance. I met with some girlfriends to try the Happy (Hour) Meal for $20 which included a burger, fries, and dirty martini. A really cute deal and highly recommend for a light meet up! The woman I met sitting next to me was raving about the caramelized onion soup and I will have to try this next time. We ended with some dessert and ordered the Crunchy Profiteroles. It was incredibly delicious and presented so well. I always love anything strawberry and tasted amazing with the basil reduction. I had such a wonderful time at Chardon for Houston Restaurant Week. The venue, from the moment you step in, is stunning from the flooring to the table settings and to the wall decor. I'm a big fan of impressionism, so it was lovely to see so many impressionist paintings around. Our waiter was very kind and took note of our dietary restrictions (for me nuts). In regards to food, maybe not everything was my favorite, but there were no misses and it was all so delicious. To start, we shared bread and butter at the table, and then I ordered the french onion soup for my first course. The soup was very hot so I had to wait a bit, but otherwise, the cheese was so delicious and I enjoyed the little chunks of bread in the soup. Very tasty. For my second course, I ordered the Amish chicken. The serving was quite large and I actually was so full I had to take the rest home. The standouts to me in that dish were also the peas and mushrooms that came with the chicken. They were soaked in sauce and so delicious. I also tried some of my friend's crispy skin gulf fish, and also really liked that. Not sure if I would order it over the chicken, it would probably depend on my mood, but that was also good. I also tried the beef cheek bourguinon (good but has bacon in it - be aware as I tried it without knowing this!), and the escargo. The escargo was actually good, it was my first time having escargo so I didn't know what to expect, but I do think I liked the soup over it. For dessert, my friends and I also shared. We had the Mille-Feuille (which I ordered), the creme brulee, and the salted caramel profiteroles. All of them were so good, but I do think I enjoyed mine the most. Beautiful place for date night! We had reservations for Saturday night, fairly busy. It's connected to Hotel Thompson and there is valet as well as ample parking around. Beautifully decorated and certainly sets the vibe for a romantic dinner. Our server, Austin, was fantastic. Very friendly and attentive. As always we started the night with drinks: Angels Envy Old Fashioned and The Bayou. Nicely done cocktails. For appetizers we ordered the Bisous Tower and the Crab & Endive salad. Highly recommend the tower!! Perfect bites to sample a bit of everything. The foie gras macaron and the cornbread madeleine were our favorite. Crab & Endive salad was a perfect complement to the tower. Refreshing and light. For entrees we had the Steak Frites and Duck a L'Orange. Steak had a lovely crust and was cooked well. I've now dined at Chardon multiple times since the restaurant opened, and it is just delightful every time. The service, the ambience, and the food are all just wonderful. The restaurant is just beautiful and the perfect place for a date night, business meal, or dinner out with friends. Make sure you ask for the bread service--it comes out with hot, fresh mini baguettes and is a great way to start the meal. I will start by saying that we did not have the typical sit down dinner experience. We arrived late (around 9pm) with a large group and were in search of a venue for our after party. Since we visited with a regular, the staff was kind enough to open the bar area to our party. Parking is mostly valet only from what I was able to see. We initially indicated to the staff that we did not intend on ordering food, but ended up ordering a dozen oysters and many burgers and fries. The oysters were fresh and sweet, served with perfect pairings of their champagne vinegar mignonette and horseradish. Chardon's burger was excellent as well and is served with pickles and caramelized onions. The burger was rich and juicy, the perfect luxury post drinking food. The fries are crispy and served with a rosemary aioli, also excellent. The drinks were strong and tasty as well. What stood out was the overall professionalism of the staff. They served us without hesitation even though they were in the process of closing for the night and being bombarded by 15+ guests late at night is not ideal. The food and drinks were a hit too. I haven't heard about this place at all, they're not a lot of French cuisines in Houston so this was really a great spot to try new cuisines. We shared the beef cheek bouirguignon and the deviled crab. The beef was excellent cause it was paired with mashed potatoes divine. They were so smooth. The beef was very tender melted like butter. I am absolutely thrilled with the dessert part oh my gosh if you don't get any food, please get this dessert. I don't know what it's called but it is a chocolate macaroon and it's filled with hazelnut and raspberries and it's just amazing and if you love hazelnut you'll love this chocolate on chocolate! The meat was tender and perfectly medium rare with a rich, savory flavor. My only complaint was that the sauce was a bit underwhelming. However, spreading the roasted garlic cloves on the steak made it absolutely delicious. The truffle fries were good too, though a little on the greasy side. French Onion Soup: 8/10. The flavor was genuinely so good and comforting. The only downside was how hot it was. I could only take a couple bites the whole time we were there. Crème Brûlée: 6/10. This one disappointed me. One and done for me. I'm a firm believer that if you're paying premium prices, everything needs to be on point--service, food, and overall experience. Unfortunately, this place missed the mark. Yes, the restaurant is very pretty, and the ambiance was lovely, but that's where the positives end. The service was subpar. We ended up asking a very kind gentleman in a suit (who wasn't even our server) instead, just to avoid the attitude. The food? Decent, but definitely not "out of this world" French cuisine. What really bothered us, though, was the way we were treated compared to the table next to us--who happened to be of a different ethnicity. Very nice and attentive sadly the food was meh. Bread service was good, and usually I can tell based on bread service how the food is going to be but this was disappointing. I got the braised short rib and it was just not good. For being braised it was burnt and hard like they had baked it then through it in to braise. We were sat in the bar area, which disappointed some but the service and meal made up for the table location. We started with an appetizer Bisous tower that gave a sample of their greatest hits. The foie gras macaron was a stand out. The Crab Endive "Caesar" was different, excellent. The duck entree was served two ways - confit and the classic breast in a fig reduction. I visited Chardon for brunch. I had the seafood tower & my guest had the mussels as well as a standard breakfast (eggs bacon toast). Both were great. The tower came with a Niçoise salad but not a traditional one. It was in a crispy puff. The mignonette for the oysters was tasty & they were fresh. The shrimp had a nice Cajun seasoning on them. I would've loved that seasoning on the lobster. The claws were the better part of the lobster. Very buttery. They gave me complimentary champagne and cake pops for my bday. Came for HRW brunch: 2 courses, 8 menu items to choose from. My friend and I visited for the first time to try the HRW menu and celebrate her birthday. I had high hopes based on the reviews and elegant atmosphere - even considered it for my own birthday dinner - but now I'm not so sure. Though I had a reservation, the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived around 1pm. Still, it took a while for our server, Chad, to greet us. He apologized, saying he was handling something else, which we understood. However, his tone during ordering felt passive-aggressive. He remarked we were speaking "too quickly" and complained about not being able to read the menu upside down. When we later asked for cocktail recs, he pointed out - a bit curtly - that we were looking at the happy hour menu (next to the cocktails), mentioned he doesn't drink, and left it at that. No offer to help or refer someone else. We eventually asked another server for drink recs, and she was much more helpful. Chad's attitude improved later, but the awkward first impression stuck. On the bright side, the host, the helpful server, and the viola player were all lovely. The food was mediocre. We had the avocado tartine, deviled blue crab (+$15), pain perdu, croque monsieur, and two cocktails - around $110 total. Both the tartine and croque monsieur had bread that was overly tough. Lovely new restaurant at the Thompson Hotel. Interior is great for a romantic dinner or a catch up meal with girlfriends. Service was fantastic. Our servers were Abbie and Hector, and they made our birthday celebration feel very special. For starters, we had the Meyer cake, the stuffed crab, and the crab & endive salad. The stuffed crab was delicious, and the "Caesar" salad was refreshing and tasty. If you like smoked salmon and cream cheese, you'll enjoy the interesting take on the crepe cake. The meal was off to an excellent start! For entrees, we opted for the Dover sole because I'm a sucker for whole fish. We also got the gnocchi and a side of the duck fat fries. I've had the overpriced Dover at Carbonne in Las Vegas, and let me tell you, this Dover far exceeded that by flavor. The caper sauce was perfectly balanced with the seasoning of the fish, and the croutons on top gave a nice contrast in texture. I would recommend, but I hope this review doesn't make it too popular to where they'll drive their price up on it! The gnocchi is made in-house and was ever so crispy on the outside but filled with pillowy softness on the inside. Magnificent. Their duck fat fries were just ok for me - flavor wise: wonderful, but I do prefer my fries to be just a bit crispier. They ended our meal with a complimentary macaron ice cream sandwich for my friend's birthday. With a bottle of wine we ordered, it was a pricey meal, but the service, ambience, and quality of the food definitely matched. It was a really lovely evening, and I look forward to coming back to try the popular bourguignon! P.S. Parking is a bit tricky, so we opted to valet. The restaurant will validate your valet ticket for a discounted price. Instead of $30, we paid $10. Honestly, for a high end restaurant like this, I do feel they should have covered the valet cost as it could be a reason enough to not revisit more often. read more

This is a beautiful place with great service and delicious food, solid choice in my opinion. We started with the escargot that was amazing, then we followed with the duck: tender and cooked to perfection with that touch of the crispy skin on one of the sides giving it that special punch. That was my favorite for the night. The low point was that the duck comes with potatoes, and they were severely undercooked - but they apologized and offered free desert. Then we went for the beef bourguignon, and that was excellent, so rich and tender. We had some massive macarons with ice cream for dessert that were delicious. Actually thought this restaurant would be super fancy cause it's in the Thompson Hotel but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't! There were folks dressed up but also lots of folks dressed casually. It was an impromptu dinner after some shopping so we were not dressed up at all. We didn't feel uncomfortable though.. the food was decently priced and my first assumption was that it was small small portions - this was definitely not the case! They were decently sized and we ended up with more than enough food! The croque monsier gougeres bites were pretty delicious! I actually really liked the black truffle & escargot vol-au-vent! It comes with a flakey pastry and some sauce on top! Wish they had more escargots on top or at least some butter escargots on the menu! The crab & endive caesar was my least favorite - basically little endive boats of crab caesar. It was a bit on the bitter side, like any endive, guess it just wasn't my cup of tea. The caramelized onion soup was fantastic and I loved how rich it was with the oxtail buillon! I would get this again in a heart beat, especially when fall/winter rolls around. The gnocchi was delicious and I loved the chunky garlic tomato sauce! The Moules frites had a nice cream sauce and can't complain of duck fat fries! Service was lacking - we couldn't find our server anywhere and she was super duper slow! We actually ended up asking the GM for things cause he was more readily available. Overall, we enjoyed our experience! Ambiance for us was more like bar dining cause we sat in the seats/tables right in front of the bar. Had the best time here last night. The decor is beautiful. The deviled eggs with caviar, steak au poivre, steak bordelaise, and Madeline dessert are must orders. All the desserts were delicious. The French martini was great, sweet but creamy strawberry flavor. I could go here just for the bread and butter. The only thing I would pass on is the escargot. It tasted mainly of puff pastry and radish. The sommelier and GM were so nice! read more

From the moment you walk in, you feel the charm and character of the restaurant. We ordered the escargot in a perfect cooked pastry, their endive with crab which is fully packed with a lot of crab, and their beautifully cooked steak with frites. My friends and I had the pleasure of dining at Chardon. Right when we walked in, we were blown away with the beautiful decor and ambiance inside. I would highly recommend Gabriela as a server! Gabriela was wonderful with all of her recommendations and her service was spectacular. I appreciated her quickness with making sure we had clean plates and silverware between each course. Her attention to detail made our dining experience even better. Our table really enjoyed everything, from the cocktails, appetizers, entrees, and desserts! My husband booked Chardon for my birthday today. We arrived and were promptly seated. Good service. Our server was very personable. Our table of four had the following: escargot, onion soup, burgers, steak frites, Beef Cheek Bourguignon, crème brûlée, & Crunchy Profiteroles. Very mixed reviews at our table. Escargot was not great. It was edible, but in the bottom scale of escargots I had had. Burger was fantastic. Steak frites was decent, but not great. The duck fat fries weren't very good; Something was off. Most disappointing was the crème brûlée which is my favorite dessert. I don't I've ever had one I didn't eat. It was horrible. Three bites were taken out of it & not a question was asked when our table was bussed. Lastly, they must not do anything for birthdays. It's ok. It's not expected, just strange.
