Really cool upstairs restaurant, bar, and outdoor patio. I thought the European inspired decor made for a nice ambience. The food itself I felt was a little hit or miss given the prices - we enjoyed the escargot but it was very very buttery (not mad), other appetizers were solid too. For mains I got the Paella which was a good portion size but a little bland. I tried a few bites of the Beef Stroganoff and enjoyed that more. All the desserts - cheesecake, tiramisu, and pistachio cake were awesome. Cocktails were decent too, though when I ordered their G&T off their menu, they brought me a normal/plain Gin and Tonic - so make sure you're careful when you order!

Tapas Tuesday - Serbian meat thing. Tender. Flavorful.

Came here for Tapas Tuesday and we were pleasantly satisfied with our dishes. My personal favs included the schnitzel, the fried eggplant, the pierogi, the duck fat fries, the Serbian meat thingy, and the fried cauliflower. We had a group of 4 ppl and they happily modified most of the dishes to have at least 4 items each so we wouldn't have to figure out how to split certain dishes. Overall, two thumbs up.

An exploration of Eastern Europe flavors. I had dined here when they first opened and it was not good. So I've given them time to get the kitchen up to speed. And it has paid off as the food is good. A fellow diner at our table remarked that their Bloody Nary was excellent and that Blue Tuba makes their own mix. Cocktails are an important component of any dining experience here. Don't ignore the cocktails. Czech "margarita" with slivovicz. The photo shows a classic kolaç, made like back in the day, in the old country. Not that meat filled doughnut tiff at the doughnut shops around town. Here is a link to an article that I've written on "kolaches" in Texas. https://www.houstonfoodexplorers.com/2018/08/kolaches-where-to-find-best-authentic.html?m=1 Some constructive criticism. Nothing negative, just suggestions. Switch to Roma tomatoes as it is easier to find ripe and flavorful ones as opposed to semi ripe hothouse tomatoes, or, allow the tomatoes to go more redder, in the kitchen, before serving. Houston tap water can pick up that muddy, algae odor from Lake Houston. The tap water today smelled really bad. I know that it is safe to drink but I'd suggest patrons to just order a Topo when here, instead, and skip the tap water. Mac and cheese with a nice, Gouda smokiness. Here at Blue Tuba, they default to a pierogi recipe. With delicious sautéed onions. The Czech knedlik . Similar to a Polish pierogi. While pierogi are typically filled dumplings, the term "knedlíky" in Czech cuisine often refers to a variety of dumplings, including both filled and unfilled types. They are a staple side dish, especially the bread or potato dumplings that are served with sauce-heavy meat dishes. However, there are also sweet versions filled with fruit, plum jam, or other sweet fillings, which are more similar in form and function to a pierogi. One specific type of sweet Czech dumpling that is very similar to a pierogi is called ovocné knedlíky (fruit dumplings) or bramborové taštičky (potato pockets/dumplings). These are often made from potato dough and filled with things like plum jam or fresh fruit, then topped with ingredients like poppy seeds, sugar, and melted butter. Cevapcici and pork schnitzel.

Novel concept here that has some issues with execution. Can be a little difficult to find the entrance if you're looking from the street side. You'll need to circle around back and then head up stairs. You're greeted by a fun Texas neon over a map of Europe. It's a fun touch, but the space seems to be confused between a very Pub-esque bar area and a more traditional dining space that has an awkwardly placed music stage. Menu isn't a big as it could be with the promise of trying a taste of Europe. Our waiter just wasn't as knowledgeable as we would've liked, not sure how familiar with the various cuisines offered he was. I think with this kinda of restaurant you want to be able to make some recommendations from a place of experience. The food was just disappointing in general. The fried items like fritters and schnitzel obviously are hard to mess up, but they lacked salt and flavor. The big offender was the "Spanish paella", not about the dish was paella. Small plate of electric yellow and wet rice. It's something I was more familiar with that made me think the things I wasn't familiar with were probably equally as unrepresentative. There was some potential here, maybe it was a bad lunch hour we came on, but this is a recommendation against. Blue 2-ba.

We visited Blue Tuba for lunch service on a weekday. Located in the Heights, the entrance was actually quite out of the way and in the Torchy's parking lot. Dining is on the second floor; the interior felt a bit empty and casual. The menu looked like a mix of European / Eastern European cuisine. Our waiter did not help much with explaining the menu or going into the variety of different styles of dishes on the menu so we just went to order a bunch of different options. We tried a variety of appetizers; mussels/ fries (3/5), escargot (3/5), cauliflower fritters (3/5), and Serbian cevapici (2/5). Most of the dishes are a new dish to try; the appetizers tasted a bit pre-made / executed a bit below expectations. We also got the schnitzel (3/5), chicken paprikash (3/5), and Spanish paella (1/5) as main dishes to try family style. The large variety of different cuisines (Spanish, German, Polish, etc etc) seemed to take away from the taste and quality of the dishes from any particular cuisine. The dishes felt like a fairly shallow presentation of a common dish from each country. There is definitely appeal to this but it seemed to take away from the quality of any particular dish. The Spanish paella in particular was extremely bland, with a soggy rice texture, and what was clearly a reheated dish (rice was stuck in sticky clumps). Overall, we were glad to try out the various dishes but was a bit disappointed in the quality and flavors of most of the dishes that we tried.

Blue Tuba in Houston's Heights neighborhood offers a distinctive "Euro-Tex" dining experience, blending European culinary traditions with Texan flair in a vibrant setting. The restaurant features live music performances by Chef Vlado, a former European rock star, and has a rooftop deck with scenic views, creating an inviting atmosphere for guests. The menu showcases inventive dishes such as schnitzel tacos, Texas paella with brisket and mussels, and Slovak mac and cheese, reflecting a fusion of flavors from countries like Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Greece, and Spain. Here were the highlights from our visit: Meatballs- great flavor and sweet with savory Perogi- just ok Muscles- good earthy flavors- would be great with a side of bread Bread and butter- came out after muscles but was delicious Paloma- tart with a great tajin rim Czech margarita- wow, strong, but so smooth!! Shnitzle- thin, crispy, and the mushroom gravy was fantastic Beef stroganoff- not the usual but still yummy. Tiramisu- fresh and yummy Czech kolochi- the pastry was too dense and they needed more filling We came with a large group for our monthly supper club and were not disappointed. The service was great and all of the staff were so friendly!

Fabulous all around ! The Gnocchi were amazing . I added grilled chicken . The Mac and cheese was very rich but very good . Also tried a Taste of Europe , which had pirogi, fried cauliflower- freaking amazingly delicious and a ground meat sausage looking thing which I'd never had before and really blew me away (sorry can't remember the name ). Drinks fabulous, service too and I enjoyed the atmosphere, I thought it was cozy . I cannot wait to go back !

Ate every bit of food

Got a recommendation to try this place from a local shop. We were the only people in for lunch...BUT service was amazing and cocktails above average. Food exceptionally tasty we order. Mac and Cheese and it was cheesy! Entrees- Beat Salad, Wurst Special - wow that cabbage. Then crispy Salmon and rice extremely tasty/ we will be back!

I want to preface this to say that I've spent a lot of time in eastern Germany, as my adoptive family is German. To start, we entered to find the hostess on her phone, and she immediately asked if we had a reservation (we did, but I was a tad bit put off by her greeting, or lack thereof). Our waiter wasn't much better, to be honest. So service was mediocre, and unfriendly. But that's not why we came. We ordered the appetizer sampler, a Schweinshaxe, and schnitzel. I was disappointed to find that the sampler came with French's mustard and a canned sauerkraut. The cauliflower fritters were undercooked and hard, and the pierogis were a frozen product-- dumpling stuffed with instant potatoes. I wish I could say that it stopped there, however. The schnitzel was the same, coming with room temp potato salad that tasted like it was from the Walmart deli, and the cucumber salad just tasted of cucumbers, cucumber juice, and canola oil. Neither of which are even close to the flavor profile of the actual dishes. The schnitzel itself was tough and the breading was wholly incorrect and reminded me of fish stick breading. The mushroom juice it came with was just that-- it tasted like mushrooms and water. No salt. No seasoning at all. The Schweinshaxe. *sigh* This is perhaps one of my favorite foods to order in a European restaurant. It was served over another round of instant mashed potatoes and packet gravy. More canned sauerkraut. The outside was gooey and soft, not crispy as a true Schweinshaxe is. The inside was again tough, I had to use a knife to cut it. For me, this was more than just my experience as a chef-- but the expectation came from my upbringing and family. And it was an epic let down. Our bill came out to $123, and we will never be back. I'm annoyed that I ruined date night by choosing this place, and my boyfriend's first experience with German food being this place. Do better. German food is not this bland or flavorless.

Service was good. Greeted as I walked in. Went on a week night seating was not an issue. Ordered the mussels and fries, the flavor was good but I had several mussels that were undercooked, fries were nice and crispy. The schnitzel was a good size, tender. I should have asked for mustard... it's just a preference. On a busy night the parking could be an issue.

The food was great. Service was ok. Took an hour to get food. They need to hire more staff. Place has a cool vibe.

Food is bland AF! Literally do not understand how this place has so many 5 star reviews. Been to Germany multiple times and schnitzel tasted so bland, was so thin, and not even close to what is even authentic. Literally had to season our own food, which, IMO should have been the chef's job. Platter was just cut up cucumbers and potato salad - terrible portion sizes all around. Shrimp scampi was mid at the very least, but once again, flavor was SO bland and it didn't even come out hot. That could be the least they can do, if not seasoning. Cherry on top was the stale wine. Was so excited to try Blue Tuba, but I am throughly disappointed.

Spaetzle
Brandon D.

Met up with some family members at Blue Tuba for Houston restaurant week brunch. My cousin had somewhere to go right after so they wanted a place close to their house. This is a European restaurant in the heights area. They have a plenty of parking space as well as rooftop seating. The brunch set comes with 2 courses, a starter and an entree. I got the Slovak mac and cheese (spaetzle) and the polish breakfast. The spaetzle was made with mini dumplings, four cheese, and bacon. The spaetzle was only good at first because it was hot but as you eat more and it cools off, it's actually pretty bland. The polish breakfast was a polish hash that includes roasted potatoes, onions, peppers, smoked kielbasa, as well as fried eggs and a side salad. The overall meal was just mediocre. It just felt like eating regular sausage and eggs that you could make at home. My aunt got the Hungarian goulash hash and said it was bland and the meat was dry. On top of that, we waited 45 mins for our food to come out after we ordered.

The bread was very buttery and nicely toasted. The frank itself was very juicy and I loved how the pico and mustard help cut through the fat. The thing that made this hotdog stand out was the cheese sauce. The cheese sauce was delicious and I could probably have just eaten that alone. One thing though, the hotdogs were a bit on the smaller size, you probably would have to order something else or a second hotdog if you were hungry. Would come back again just for this hotdog! Parking/Service: There was a small lot on the side of the building, but other than that you might have to street park in the neighborhood right next to it. The ordering system was a bit of a surprise for me. You have to walk in to the bar and order there.

The fig, prosciutto and other toppings complimented each other well. The flatbread dough itself was ok but could've benefited from a little more flavor such as some garlic, butter and herbs. I also would've liked it a bit thinner so I could taste less of the bread and more of those delicious toppings. Don't get me wrong it was good and I ate all of it but these are small suggestions I'd recommend to bring it to perfection. I could see parking and seating being tricky. We initially had a table that was not near a heat lamp, however an employee came over and let us know that we could switch to a table near the heat lamp which was appreciated because it was chilly. I'm glad we made reservations because they were at capacity (150 person capacity) and weren't taking any walk ins. We got there early cause Resy suggested checking out the Tasting Room before or after the reservation time. We got there about an hour earlier, and the host said he didn't know anything about that except that the Tasting Room area was used for events. Interesting. We were seated earlier on the patio on this freezing evening. At first, we were at a table that didn't have a heat lamp, but when one freed up, they were so nice to suggest that we move closer to the heat lamp since they saw us shivering. Lol. We were thankful for that. I wore fleece lined jeans and brought gloves and a beanie anyway having been in the below freezing winter in London. Laura was our server and was kind and funny. So was this other guy who checked in every now and then. He made light of their last day situation. The dining area is so beautiful inside. I love the limestone-looking interior and chandeliers. Reminds me of Fredericksburg or something. They had many large groups and a few small groups of friends or couples dining on this last day. Way to go out with a bang. A lot of the wines were selling out or already sold out around 7-8 pm. We tried the truffle fries and Sicilian meatballs with focaccia bread. I like the thick cut of the fries and the black garlic aioli. It reminded me of yuca fries. The Sicilian meatballs were a bit small, peppery and salty. I wish the marinara was a little more tart. The focaccia helped cut through the saltiness. I had 2 glasses of the NA Sauvignon blanc which was light and a little tart. They ran out of the NA red blend. My friend ordered Sayonara, one of their farewell flights which were aptly named for "goodbye". It was a great night on the patio but chilly. My friend purchased a rosé and a Pinot Grigio as part of their Last Sail wines. Actually, the Pinot Grigio wasn't part of the sale, and he was going to take off 20%, but he also made it 50% off. So nice!! I'm glad we got to try them on their last day. Bon voyage, Mutiny.

We ordered several tapas and one large plate half order. I don't know much about wine, personally, but the drinks we did get were amazing. The restaurant itself was very pretty as well, lots of natural lighting and then low lighting as the sun went down. The music was low and we were able to hear each other well, apart from one group across the room that would get rowdy but I can't blame them for having a good time. Our food was all delicious and I forgot to take pics of some of them because we devoured them so quickly. Not pictured, we ordered the grilled asparagus and focaccia. I highly recommend all of what we ordered.

Bayla is one of the best servers I've ever had. That's coming from someone who only cooks twice a…read moremonth, and thus frequently eats out. I spend ample time at high ends / Michelin star restaurants, and so I am familiar with all star service. Bayla really made our time special by going out of her way to make us feel comfortable and valued. She made it all seem effortless and at no point did she ever make us feel like a burden. Thank you for everything! The food and ambiance were also amazing! Truly a top notch restaurant experience.
