Salt & pepper squid
Gene W.

4.5 stars for effort...........Sadly only 3.5 stars for execution........so 4 stars. Eugene has plenty of Szechuan Chinese restaurants which are very good, but authentic Cantonese style Chinese food is harder to find. Spring House attempts to make dishes that you'd find in metro areas that have chinatowns. We had 4 standard Cantonese dishes (beef chow fun, Singapore curry rice noodles, stewed beef noodle soup, & salt & pepper squid) so we could judge how "authentic" they could cook. While the components were there, besides the squid which was scrumptious, something was slightly amiss for the other dishes. The chow fun lacked the "faw hay", the Singapore noodle was too salty, and the noodles in the beef stew (good & tender) wasn't "right." It's a counter serve type place where you get your own water, utensils, etc. And the prices were fair as was the quantity of food. The staff were friendly & helpful, though don't expect a "fine dining" experience. For Eugene, this might be as close as you can get to authentic Chinatown style cooking so it's worth a try and maybe you might like it.

Update: Alright it's a 5/5. We ordered more Cantonese dishes and explored a bit more, and everything has been delicious. The service is so nice, and always helpful. Thinking of the beef and egg dish makes me drool. Pork belly is always a staple. Fried rice - incredible.

We were stoked to try this Cantonese restaurant in the U of O area. Maybe it's legit, but everything was way too salty. The beef brisket noodle soup was definitely not correct. The flavor of the meat was off and it wasn't tender. The noodle texture was not bouncy. The service was awesome, though. The guy who took my order was super friendly. I think I will need to keep looking for a good Cantonese place around here.

Lunch - Pork fried rice with baked eggs. Delightful!

Right at the Campus of U of O! I've been mourning the loss of Spring Garden restaurant on Main at Pioneer Parkway in Springfield since the doors were closed. I wore sack cloth and ashes. I sat on the floor and wept bitter tears. Silly me, they moved to Spring HOUSE! Found this out and had to go. Parking is somewhat limited in the area, but you can buy time on the street in the convenient boxes that suck money from your credit/debit card. An hour cost me $2.00! (It's over $20.00 an hour in San Francisco, so who's complaining?) They have a great menu, and I will be returning to sample more as I can. THIS is a great place for a person dining alone. You get a very reasonable plate of very good food for a very reasonable price. I chose Creamy egg and Pork baked rice. Stupendous! Delicious! Great taste, texture and quantity. The ambience is, in a word, missing. There are a ton of pictures of the dishes on the walls. You get to serve yourself for flatware and/or chopsticks, ice water and napkins. Now go find a table and sit down. Mom and Pop who run the place speak good English, and are great hosts. The lunch menu is well done, with lots of options. I look forward to eating my way through it in the next half decade.

Steamed Chicken

Steamed Chicken is a must try! It's really really delicious and good! You can never have such a smooth and soft and unforgettable chicken taste if you don't try this!

Inside. They take a long time to bus tables, so almost all of the tables had dirty plates/cups.

If you want good Chinese food, nice atmosphere, and good service... Look elsewhere. 1) This place is SUPER confusing to find if you use gps. It's on the street, but parking isn't ideal. Either you have to park on the very busy street OR park around the block behind the restaurant in a VERY sketchy parking lot. (Like, have pepper spray on hand.) 2)The service isn't great. I walked in, wasn't acknowledged or greeted at all. As a side note: There were several employees at various tables, eating. 3) It's a "seat yourself" kind of place, but I had difficulty even finding a table that was clean! It's not a big place, and there aren't very many tables, but almost all of them had dirty plates/cups on them. Apparently they take a longggg time to get around to bussing tables! (And most of the remaining few had employees sitting at them eating). It was NOT busy when I arrived. 3) The menu is okay. Not a lot of description as to what ingredients are in the dishes, but the pictures above the counter are somewhat helpful. Warning: The "number" items on the laminated menu don't exactly match up with the "number" items listed above the counter! 4)Food is meh. The fried rice was pretty dry and hard. Noodles were greasy. BBQ duck flavor was ok, but lots of bones, not much meat. Pork is nothing but fat; inedible. If you are a stereotypical college student that will eat anything- Feel free to give this place a try. If you have standards at all- Look elsewhere. 5)Restaurant cleanliness is questionable. Besides all of the un-bussed tables, the general cleanliness of the interior could use some work. Especially when you look in the kitchen and towards the back of the restaurant at all; Very cluttered and messy. Just doesn't look clean. 6)Prices are okay, not expensive. But for the cruddy atmosphere, service, and food... Not worth the money. Overall, this restaurant is not worth going to.

We wanted to try this location and was sorely disappointed. First there isn't even a hostess to take our name and inform us of a wait time. ABSOLUTELY NO ONE! Instead they provide a notepad and a handwritten sign to put your name down. In the 15 minutes we stood around waiting for some shred of customer service we witnessed one guy walk in, grab a menu then was followed by his wife. When my wife confronted this guy and his wife she stated "they had reservations". THIS PLACE DOES NOT TAKE RESERVATIONS AND THERE WAS NO ONE TO STEP IN FOR THE 6 OTHER PARTIES BEFORE THIS COUPLE that had "RESERVATIONS". Clearly they don't give a shit about their customers and STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND! I guess they feel they have enough business they don't need future customers but if they're so busy then why be so cheap as to not hire a host/hostess? Just bad business practice.

This was extremely frustrating, as we had called in advance specifically to avoid this situation. If this was truly their policy, it should have been clearly communicated over the phone or at least before seating us--not after we had already committed to ordering food. As for the food, it was average and nothing memorable. Unfortunately, the poor service overshadowed the entire experience. We will not be returning.

I always find that Asian food hits the spot when I'm really hungry, so I looked online for a place that "the locals" rated highly and I came across "Jade Dumpling and Noodles" on Willamette. Let me just say that the fine people of Eugene didn't steer me wrong! My oldest son loves dumplings and I love noodles (really any type of Asian food), so this place was a gem! We ordered 3 different kinds of dumplings, shrimp, pork and a spicy pork and they were All Delicious! These "soup dumplings" were small and bite sized but were packed with huge savory flavors! They are made right there and are amazing! I myself had the mixed noodles. House made noodles with beef, chicken, shrimp and vegetables, stir fried in a delicious lite sauce, that enhanced the flavors of the dish, without overpowering it. You could taste all the ingredients and they were fresh and delicious! I cleaned the plate and now I can't wait to return to Jade Dumplings and Noodles again and try their other dishes, that I know will be tasty! The staff is very friendly, helpful and attentive. When I walked in, I noted that it is very small... with limited seating, and pretty bare bones in the aesthetics. Probably does a lot of take-out more than dine in. There was a strong odor of burned cooking oil that was off putting. The lady at the counter was friendly, and took my order quickly. They do not have any hot tea, which would have been nice on a cold day. So I got a coke. I sat down and had to move... as the sun was coming in the window and blinding me where I sat. Other patrons came in and had to move also for that reason. They brought my food out and placed it on the table, which was nice. Portions were decent sized. The breaded chicken in my Sweet and Sour Chicken was mostly breading... very little chicken (see attached photo). Breading was not crispy at all... a bit mushy (I suspect they use pre-breaded chicken that was frozen, which is becoming more common... blech! Hard to make that crispy, unless double fried). The sweet and sour sauce was a little bitter... which I associate with pre-made (sysco? Not made in house) sauce. Very thin, overly sweet and a slight bitterness. Rice was ok... pretty good actually. Some might say I am too picky? But with the meal, a coke, and a tip... this was over $20... and there are other places that do this meal better for about the same price.

I ordered Mapo, and it came with some steamed rice. I ordered it with Medium Heat, since this my first time here, and I have no idea what their spice levels are like. My Mapo had just the tiniest bit of spice... not much at all. I tried the chili oil that was on the table... and found it lacking in heat also, but flavor was ok. Mapo was decent... not very MA LA for those know the term... hardly any numbing Sichuan peppercorn in it that I could taste. So this is more of an Americanized version.... not the Chengdu version. Lots of sauce, and a good portion of tofu... enough that I brought over half home with me for later. Rice was ok... edges were kind of dry, so it was not super fresh. But I would eat here again... there are a lot of traditional Sichuanese dishes on the menu, and they even have meat skewers that I will have to try. Next time I will order HOT (extra Ma La)... and see if that does the job.
