    Salt & pepper squid

4.5 stars for effort...........Sadly only 3.5 stars for execution........so 4 stars. Eugene has plenty of Szechuan Chinese restaurants which are very good, but authentic Cantonese style Chinese food is harder to find. Spring House attempts to make dishes that you'd find in metro areas that have chinatowns. We had 4 standard Cantonese dishes (beef chow fun, Singapore curry rice noodles, stewed beef noodle soup, & salt & pepper squid) so we could judge how "authentic" they could cook. While the components were there, besides the squid which was scrumptious, something was slightly amiss for the other dishes. The chow fun lacked the "faw hay", the Singapore noodle was too salty, and the noodles in the beef stew (good & tender) wasn't "right." It's a counter serve type place where you get your own water, utensils, etc. And the prices were fair as was the quantity of food. The staff were friendly & helpful, though don't expect a "fine dining" experience. For Eugene, this might be as close as you can get to authentic Chinatown style cooking so it's worth a try and maybe you might like it.

Update: Alright it's a 5/5. We ordered more Cantonese dishes and explored a bit more, and everything has been delicious. The service is so nice, and always helpful. Thinking of the beef and egg dish makes me drool. Pork belly is always a staple. Fried rice - incredible.

We were stoked to try this Cantonese restaurant in the U of O area. Maybe it's legit, but everything was way too salty. The beef brisket noodle soup was definitely not correct. The flavor of the meat was off and it wasn't tender. The noodle texture was not bouncy. The service was awesome, though. The guy who took my order was super friendly. I think I will need to keep looking for a good Cantonese place around here.

Lunch - Pork fried rice with baked eggs. Delightful!

Right at the Campus of U of O! I've been mourning the loss of Spring Garden restaurant on Main at Pioneer Parkway in Springfield since the doors were closed. I wore sack cloth and ashes. I sat on the floor and wept bitter tears. Silly me, they moved to Spring HOUSE! Found this out and had to go. Parking is somewhat limited in the area, but you can buy time on the street in the convenient boxes that suck money from your credit/debit card. An hour cost me $2.00! (It's over $20.00 an hour in San Francisco, so who's complaining?) They have a great menu, and I will be returning to sample more as I can. THIS is a great place for a person dining alone. You get a very reasonable plate of very good food for a very reasonable price. I chose Creamy egg and Pork baked rice. Stupendous! Delicious! Great taste, texture and quantity. The ambience is, in a word, missing. There are a ton of pictures of the dishes on the walls. You get to serve yourself for flatware and/or chopsticks, ice water and napkins. Now go find a table and sit down. Mom and Pop who run the place speak good English, and are great hosts. The lunch menu is well done, with lots of options. I look forward to eating my way through it in the next half decade.

Nice service, poor quality food. Both dishes we ordered we not up to par on taste. Would recommend another business in town !

The soup dumplings and BBQ meats rival NY Chinatown--Eugene, and UO students, are lucky to have this place!!

Honestly, thank god for authentic Chinese food…read more This is the best place you go to in Eugene for delicious handmade dumplings and noodles. Came in mid-afternoon on the weekend and the place was busy. We were seated immediately and received our food ~10 mins after ordering. We ordered the spicy and sour beef noodle soup, veggie dumplings, and scallion pancakes. There is an option to adjust the spice and numbing levels to your dishes. The food came out steaming. The veggie dumplings were flavorful and the wrapping was just thick enough to make 10-dumplings a hearty meal. The taste profile is similar to what you'd find in Northern China, and there is chili oil/vinegar/soy sauce at the table for you to make your own sauce. Scallion pancakes were deep-fried and on the thin side. They were more oily than the homemade ones I'm used to, but the crunch and flavor on them were nice. The sour and spicy beef noodle soup (opted spicy and numbing) was yummy. You can tell the noodles were handmade and they had a good bite to them. The beef was tender, the bok choy was a nice refreshing balance to the bold flavors of the dish, and the tea egg was a nice addition. The soup was quite sodium-heavy and oily, but the flavor was quite authentic and still yummy with the numbing spice kicking in towards the end. The interior is clean and has a viewing window at the front where you can see dumplings being made in real time.

Very flavorful and not too spicy - sichuan spicy dry noodle - mala spice which numbs the mouth a little but not overbearing - sweet and sour pork - I always order this dish. The dumplings here are absolutely delicious!…read more The xiaolongbao have incredibly thin skins and are filled with rich, flavorful broth. The boiled dumplings are clearly handmade--you can taste the freshness of the dough. The pork and cabbage filling is clean, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. The pan-fried buns are crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with a generous, flavorful meat filling. Every type of dumpling has its own unique flavor, and with each bite, you'll think, "This one is my favorite!"--until you try the next one. This place is truly a hidden gem for dumplings in Eugene.

Food was way too spicy for me, the Dan Dan noodles were teary-eyed spicy. I couldn't eat it so took that home for our son who absolutely loves spicy food. The everything fried rice tasted like an ashtray so smokey, and not in a good way. I know it is supposed to be smokey flavor but this was over the top. I enjoyed the spicy long bao. The General Tsao chicken however was mediocre with too much spice, too much breading and did not come with any kind of veggie at all, or even with rice. Service was strange being ignored by our busboy but he did bring us left overs boxes. Too many and seemed pissed that we did not want to use them all. We left the fried rice. Overall, a bit disappointing.

I was about to drive out to Portland area to find it but Yelp help me find this place that was only 6 mins away. Thank goodness! On the outside, I wasn't sure if this place was open, but as soon as I opened the door, I see there were people dining and the hostess greeted me right away. I informed her I wanted to do take out, so she handed me the menu. I was impressed that they had some dim sum items to choose from and was thinking this will be the best surprise for my daughter! I ordered some basics and the century egg and pork jook (congee). The wait wasn't long and the items were packed nicely. I wish they added some yellow mustard and shoyu to dip but maybe it's something I should have asked for. Overall, I'm am glad this place exists. The food is good, the flavors are there but be aware, price point is pretty steep but hey, it's probably the only place in Eugene that serves legit Cantonese dim sum and congee.

They use medium/smallish shrimp instead of the large, high-quality stuff. The intestine tract is left on some of the shrimp, leaving a muddy flavor that I just don't like. The chow fun was just okay. It is passable if you cook it longer and add more sauce at home.
