We wanted some seafood while we were in Eugene but the options for lunch are limited. We haven't been to Newman's Grotto so decided to try it. First of all, the place is small. This isn't the place to bring a group. Inside is tight-there are two small low tables close by together and a narrow bar at one end with maybe 5 stools. There is an outdoor seating area but it was full today. Menu is fairly small. They have fish & chips, fish sandwiches, fish/shrimp salads and 3 types of grilled fish with rice. There are a few sides. There are also daily specials. We had a salmon sandwich with a side of fries and grilled yellowtail with rice which was the special for the day. The salmon sandwich (ordered no sauce or shredded cabbage) was good but nothing special. I'm sure the cabbage and tartar sauce would have given it a bit of zip. The fries were ok. The yellowtail didn't have much flavor until you out what tasted like a light teriyaki. It had brown rice which was nice & chewy and the sauce gave it flavor. You really have to cook fish with flavors like garlic, lemon or something to give it flavor. Service was really good. They were very willing to put things on the side or remove them. I don't think I'd go back. If it's nothing special, I'm not going to pay for a meal out. read more

Great spot- mostly for take out they have limited indoor seating. Nice covered outdoor seating area for warmer weather . Everything is well packaged and cooked fresh. Delicious salmon sandwich, fish and chips, shrimp salad. Good sauces. Well packaged for to-go orders. They have a nice weekend business which also made me feel confident in the food quality. Very generous portions. Always appreciated. Cod breaded nicely. Nice and crisp. Flavorful. One piece was a little salty unfortunately, that's never happened before. But the rest was good. I am used to going to the location on Willamette, but we were near here and had a hankering for some seafood, so we decided to go here. I ordered the shrimp and my son had the cod, both with chips. The shrimp were sweet and cooked perfectly and my son very much enjoyed the cod as he usually does. The staff here were great and nice to see that this location doesn't charge for refills, but I don't know if the other location on Willamette does that now, its been a while since going there. Also inside can get tight, they do have a nice sized outdoor shaded area. The prices have risen quite a bit from when we started going to Newman's, but as a once in a while splurge, it hits the spot! read more

We stopped for lunch here. I'd say the food is reasonably priced for the quantity and quality. We bought: 1 serve of cod fish (3 small pieces) and chips $10 1 serve of shrimp (6 pieces) and coleslaw $10 I didn't realize they were breaded. I would've preferred batter. My fault, I should've asked rather than assumed. Fries were good. Shrimp was excellent. Fish was okay. Lots of tarter sauce. Good seating indoor and outdoor patio. Good service. Really amazing fresh seafood for a great price. We swung buy right before a concert and fed 6 people for 85.00. The prices are amazing. Chowder for 5 bucks. Everyone loved the coconut shrimp. The fish is always great, however the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Let me tell you about my experience on Monday 1/27/25. We had a call in order & my name was given as the "pick up" person. It was a busy night for them, however "N" @ the counter could have / should have done much better. 2 orders were put on the counter, 1 name was called & the order was picked up. I waited while "N" shouted to a customer (rudely) about where the ketchup was (but the canister was empty inside) & take a couple of other orders. Finally I went & asked about my order, sure enough it had been sitting/ getting cold. He did offer me different fries & started throwing old fries into the fryer @ that I told him "never mind". I wish i got to try their food! I ordered two fish and chip plates, but when i got home I was missing one order of fish! so i drive another 15 minutes back to ask for the meal to be replaced (the other food was cold at this point) and the owner refused. i get not wanting to dole out more product but at this point their error caused the whole meal to go to waste. waste of time, gas and i was late coming back to work bc i had to go back. the only decent thing they did was give a full refund after i requested it. so i left still hungry and frustrated that i wasted an hour on this place. not coming back and poor management. bummer bc i was pretty excited to try their food. read more

I graduated from the Ooooooo in 2007. Just when the Grotto was opening up. I was recently in town and had to come here for the first time. Same taste and freshness as the original on Willamette, better hours (like being open on Sunday) and circumvents the overflow from the other location. Love the fried shrimp, halibut and scallops. And now there's an option for Cajun fries (mind blown)! I loved the original plain fries but dang the Cajun fries were amazing. You'll also never go wrong with the clam chowder. I've loved this Eugene spot since I was introduced to it a decade ago. I always order fish al a carte and the shrimp Louie salad. Amazing seafood! Not only am I a 4th generation Santa Cruz California native, I had the benefit of fresh seafood from my uncle who was the head chef of The Miramar on the wharf for 30+ years. I'm spoiled regarding my fresh seafood. Newmans is 10 out of 10 on all counts. The seafood is fresh, you can smell fresh oil from the fryers, not dirty. And a little tip also, if you come into a restaurant and you see seniors hanging around, that's a huge green light. Prices are fantastic, service quick and caring, food is Top Shelf. Well done! Newmans is the place you dream of when you're away for fresh fish and chips. I usually get 2 pieces grilled cod or salmon, with chips. Always excellent with their wonderful house made tartar sauce. I used to get the 3 piece order but realized eventually that I could only eat 2 pieces, and the third sat in the fridge unless you have a friend to eat it. Which means that my meal became even more economical. Sometimes I get the beer or cider offering. Prices around $10-$14 or so. Highly recommended. read more

I have owned two successful food service businesses. What I was served here and the actions of the employees was unacceptable. Two orders of halibut fish and chips. Overcooked and dry. An employee eating his lunch, wiping his face etc. in the middle of the food prep area. I informed the employee that if I caught one of my employees doing that, they would be terminated. I was passing through in early July on a road trip and decided to stop at Newman's Grotto for lunch. I ordered the 3 pc cod fish and chips ($8). During COVID, they have a walk up window that you order at and will call your name when the food is ready. This seems like a pretty popular spot and there were several people already in line when I got there, so if you're in a hurry, I believe they also take phone orders. They were still pretty quick, however, maybe taking about 20 minutes. There are a couple of benches that you're able to eat at outside, but I decided to just take the meal back to the car. The Food I don't often get fish and chips because I can usually feel my arteries clogging halfway through the meal. That being said, Newman's hit the nail on the head with this one and I thought that the portion size was perfect. Not to mention, both items were fried to perfection and came out piping hot. Might've burned the roof of my mouth, but worth. The breading of the cod was perfect in thickness although the fish tasted a bit dry. Their delicious tartar sauce certainly made up for it though. The chips were chips, but good ones since they literally were pulled straight out of the fryer. They also receive brownie points from me for being incredibly affordable. I would recommend this place if you're looking for some good fish and chips that won't break the bank! read more
