I was passing through in early July on a road trip and decided to stop at Newman's Grotto for lunch. I ordered the 3 pc cod fish and chips ($8). During COVID, they have a walk up window that you order at and will call your name when the food is ready. This seems like a pretty popular spot and there were several people already in line when I got there, so if you're in a hurry, I believe they also take phone orders. They were still pretty quick, however, maybe taking about 20 minutes. There are a couple of benches that you're able to eat at outside, but I decided to just take the meal back to the car. The Food I don't often get fish and chips because I can usually feel my arteries clogging halfway through the meal. That being said, Newman's hit the nail on the head with this one and I thought that the portion size was perfect. Not to mention, both items were fried to perfection and came out piping hot. Might've burned the roof of my mouth, but worth. The breading of the cod was perfect in thickness although the fish tasted a bit dry. Their delicious tartar sauce certainly made up for it though. The chips were chips, but good ones since they literally were pulled straight out of the fryer. They also receive brownie points from me for being incredibly affordable. I would recommend this place if you're looking for some good fish and chips that won't break the bank! read more

Found this place on Yelp. Great find, will definitely be back next time we're in town. Got the Halibut fish and chips. I like the coating on the fish. Very fresh. It's been a while since we tried Newman's. The first time I wasn't impressed, and we stuck to other fish and chips places in town. A few months ago I went with coworkers, and it was good, I especially enjoyed he coconut shrimp. It was better than I remembered it being from the first time I'd gone. Recently I took my fiancé, and the fish and chips were quite good. We arrived right before closing, and were met with absolutely zero attitude from the staff. We made sure to take it to go so we didn't keep them there late, but sometimes when you are the last order of the night, quality can slip or you can get "bottom of the barrel" stuff. What we got sure didn't taste like it. Everything was cooked and seasoned well, and the prices were fair. Best part- when we opened up the bag when we got home, my fiancé handed me a wrapped basket of fries, and I found this note on the paper that said "Go Raiders!" (My fiancé was wearing a Raiders hoodie, and he's been a lifelong fan). Unfortunately for the cook- I'm a Broncos fan- so his note was met with a loud "booooo! Tainted fries!" But we both laughed and the fiancé is an even bigger fan of this place knowing there is a Raiders fan working there! read more

Not a fan. The actual quality of this $9 cod including plain fries would be average cod at best. I ordered 2, $9 cod fish & chips. 15 minutes later I noticed a person who had ordered after me got their food. At 20 minutes, 2 others after ordering after me got their food. These were not on-line orders. These were normal meal orders taken at the window after my order. So, at the 20-minute mark after noticing several people who had ordered after me, I walked up to the window. He asked my name and he said "it's coming right up." A minute later he hands me the bag..no apology, no nothing. 20 minutes for basic Cod fish and chips isn't worth it for myself. Blame it on Covid-19, the lack of employees, and a high state minimum wage law, the bottom line is I can get better fish elsewhere, and definitely much better service. read more

We don't give many 4 Star reviews but the salmon/rice combo has to be one of the best quality and values for take-out dining in Lane County. "nuff" said so you'll just have to try it even though we hesitate to post this recommend as so few good dining spots down on Coburg Rd. remain with Cafe 440 now closed and good dining / take-out spots are more limited all the time. read more

I have never had a bad meal at Newman's. The halibut fish and chips is my go to, but the cod is great, and the salmon too. Their fries are great, and so is the service too. The Grotto has outside seating, that is great for informal meetings, or just getting together with friends. read more

My girlfriend & I decided to give it a try and we left very disappointed. I ordered the halibut fish basket and it was 3 tiny pieces of fish with zero taste & the coleslaw was no flavor for $16.50. My gal got the coconut shrimp with fries and a cup of chowder. She said the shrimp was okay but not memorable and the chowder, YUCK. It tasted horrible and was runny. I don't understand people's preference for Newman's over other places to get fish n chips in town. Ordered salmon, rockfish and chowder. The chowder is bland, I found a total of 3 clams in the whole bowl, and the fried fish tasted like it was frozen for too long. Fries were fine. I tried the Willamette location years ago and was not impressed. Tried this location today after moving to the neighborhood and had the same experience. It's a matter of taste preference I guess. These folks make some of the most delicious seafood and chowder in town. They make it quickly, are friendly, helpful and patient. I get foid there regularly and have never ended up with bad food or the wrong order. Their patio is utterly charming and a wonderful place to enjoy your meal in nice weather. Awesome to go fish dinner. We had the fish and chips, one with scallops and the other with Halibut, both super fresh and tasty. Also had the shrimp louie salad which was crispy. Well, been to both Newman's and usually go to this location for convenience. Mostly order the fried Cod & chips (not English style battered). 99% of the time, top notch, hot and fresh. The staff is usually very friendly and accommodating, as it should be in the hospitality industry. I love coleslaw but not a fan of theirs, it's just OK. There are only 2 places in Eugene for fish and chips, Newman's (Both locations) and Fisherman's Market, unless you're not a fish fan. read more

I really love the fish and chips that Newman's Grotto! The seafood is so fresh and they fry up the fish nice, crispy, and golden brown. I've had the traditional cod and salmon and they were exceptionally cooked. The fish is so juicy once you take a bite into it. And the chips (or fries) are amazing too. The clam chowder is tasty, hearty, and loaded with clams. One of the best chowders I've ever had! The service is so friendly and their recommendations are spot on. I never even liked fish until very recently, so I never thought that I'd eat here. But after trying their crunchy, moist fish & chips (super fresh cod and halibut), I think I'll be back MANY more times! My boyfriend had the battered salmon and chips, as well as the clam chowder. There were HUGE pieces of clam in it, he loved it. Even if I didn't eat any seafood from here, the "chips" were phenomenal in their own right and just the right amount for me. Extremely satisfied! There is ample amount of outdoor seating and parking, but the inside seating is somewhat limited. Luckily, it wasn't a super cold day, so we sat outdoors and ate our feast. Finally had a chance to get some fish and chips from Newman's for the first time in a while and was excited to use their online ordering system. I went to order and half of the menu wasn't available online. Checked back again a little later and more of it was available but still not all of it. Hmm... oh well at least they had the cod and chips and shrimp and chips so we ordered a couple orders of each for takeout. We brought it home and ate it within about 10 min or so of being made. Now maybe fish and chips just isn't the best thing to order for takeout but it felt like they could maybe package it in a better way? The tops of our fish was still nice and crisp but the bottom was so soggy it wasn't even worth eating the breading. Our fries were wrapped maybe to help keep them warm but it made them a bit soggy. The shrimp was still in decent shape and oh man it was so good! So I guess next time I grab Newman's for takeout I'll get the shrimp and not the cod. Not-so-positive: a bit greasy (frying oil wasn't hot enough) with not very much flavor, and despite what the menu states no sauces (not even one!) were provided for our three orders. I am just super happy to see there is a fish and chips option in the Coburg rd area with outside seating. I also liked the straight forward menu for different fish options & was elated to see oysters on the menu too! Kombucha was great.
