When Newman's Grotto opened years ago on our side of town we were thrilled. Tonight we were surprised that our favorite meal, grilled salmon (wild, nor farm raised - yum!) with rice and coleslaw, went from $9 to $11.50 from last month to this month. This little spot is hidden away on Coburg Road, but we decided to give it a go last week due to them serving free meals for Veteran's Day. My husband had the cod and chips, and I had the coconut shrimp and chips. Listen, nothing is like seafood when you have lived right on the water, but we were so impressed by what we had! Simple menu with fried and grilled options, GREAT prices, and a nice little patio area outside. I've been a seafood lover since I was little. My dad was really into seafood so we ate it a lot. I like to think I've had my fair share of fish & chips. We just recently moved to Eugene so I've had a list of restaurants to try and Newman's has been on it. We finally popped in here because my husband was hungry but can currently only have soft foods (like soup) due to a recent dental surgery. I'm currently new to the Eugene area, I came from Las Vegas, NV, so $6.50 or even $11.50 for a meal isn't expensive to me. That's just my personal opinion though. I think the prices are reasonable and the fish tastes fresh. I ordered Halibut and chips and the hubby ordered cod and chips. We walked in about 35 minutes til closing. You could tell the employees wanted to go home and weren't thrilled that people kept coming in placing orders. Men behind counter weren't rude, but they didn't exactly deliver good customer service. The order took a few minutes, which is understandable, since I expect fresh fish. The fish was served hot, batter was crunchy, and tarter sauce was really good! The cod had more of a fishy taste, while the halibut was meaty and didn't lack flavor. I honestly liked both, it just depends what your in the mood for! Delicious, fresh, affordable food from (according to one of the clerks) the Pacific northwest coast. The folks were very friendly. Today was our first time there, it's January. Not much seating inside (two 2-person tables and about 6-8 tall chairs at a bar against a side wall). However, there's a beautiful outdoor grotto with lots of tables which will be perfect on warmer days. I had salmon with rice and coleslaw. It was scrumptious! The salmon had a smoky flavor from the grill, and was prepared with a light teriyaki sauce. The cole slaw was crisp and flavorful. It wasn't drenched in mayonnaise. My sweetie had fresh cod and chips. He enjoyed it very much (and I had a few nibbles which were yummy!). The fries could've been a bit crisper, but they had a great flavor. I went to Newman's Grotto on Saturday February 13, 2021. I did not know about the company rule of wearing a mask while waiting outside for your to-go orders. The gentleman who was behind a glass barrier said that I had to get a mask even though I was standing outside. I got the mask and I was holding it to my face and then insisted that it had to go around my hears. I complied and said to him is this good for you and the employee of Newman's Grotto ( the white guy) who waited on me call me a DICK! As a man of color, I started to go up in him like a bicycle without a seat, but I just looked at him and asked why he said that. Another customer waiting in line and a regular at Newman's said that he did not have to say anything like that to me. Then one of the women in the back,starting yelling at me that it was the company's policy. Well I thought that sounds like the attitude that was used in Texas with me when the personnel at a restaurant said that the colored's had to get their food at the back door. Company policy, yeah sure. I started thinking is that right, have we stooped to this level, here in Eugene? I had a coach on the phone while the employee and I were speaking and the coach on the line could not believe the language that the employee was using. He said that he did not hear anything that was said by me to the employee to warrant being called a DICK! Speaking about the company's policy, I am sure it doesn't say here are the rules and if a customer questions you about them, call them a DICK! I am also thinking that the company's policy doesn't want or allow their personnel to speak in a condescending manner to the customers. Amazing place to feed your seafood cravings. They sell fresh and clean seafood. As a fish market they get 5 star from me. They also have a kitchen (4out of 5) and make fresh seafood dishes fried or grilled! I love their fried oysters and oyster shooters. I have had tried their grilled salmon, halibut, tuna and it was good yummy fish but tasted bland. I do prefer to buy fresh seafood and make them at home with my own fish-spices. Freshest fish and chips, for a super low price. The sauces are made in house and tasty. Husband loves the salmon fish and chips and the breaded shrimp, I love the freshness and flakiness of the cod. Will go back to try the grilled salmon and rice if I ever get past how good the fish and chips is. The counter staff here is nice and mellow and fast. Traveling I5 we decided to stop for some good seafood. We checked YELP and found Newman's Grotto. Sounded good and not too expensive. A bit of a dive location and hard to find even with gps. Hard parking to figure out (especially for a large pickup). Nothing fancy and busy for after 1 pm on a Friday. A bit hard to figure out how and what to order, but the staff was wonderful. We had the best salmon and chips ever. Fresh, perfectly cooked with a panko type, not thick batter. Also a salad that was great. The staff answered all our questions and found us our utensils (they don't automatically come out with a fork.) We've been to several locations in the Eugene area for fish and chips. Thus far, Newman's Grotto is #1! The breading on the fish was excellent and did not over power the taste of the fish. We tried both the cod and the halibut and both were cooked perfectly and delicious. It's not a fancy place, with only a couple small tables inside and a few on the patio outside and food is served in paper boats. Highly recommend this place and we will definitely return. read more

We were referred to this place by a server at Cafe 440 across the street. We swung through this week one night for dinner. The place is really clean and not nearly as fishy smelling as Fisherman's Market. The guy at the register was super friendly. We both ordered Halibut and chips. We'd never had halibut as fish and chips, but we both love halibut, so we decided to try it out. The flavor was good but we were a little bummed because the fish was over-cooked. Definitely was more of the consistency of chicken breast, not halibut. We will definitely be back, but we'll probably try something else. read more

So the reasoning for my review is simple the location isn't that convenient the parking and the take out parking is limited and driving around the lot is not easy with such a small space also the staff is nice but the biggest problem and reasoning behind my rating is that the fish is simply just way overcooked I have had the cod and the salmon battered of course and both are way overcooked and I am a fan of fish and a big fan of salmon so pretty disappointed when it's overcooked and I love sushi so I can be easy to please but haven't tried this place twice I won't be back again and am now seeking better options for my love of seafood. Coming from the bay area in California my palate and the way I like my seafood cooked is way up there but I am still willing to give other restaurants here in Oregon a try just not this one again. Mediocre food, and just plain AWFUL service! A few weeks ago I paid $32 for a piece of previously-frozen Salmon that I grilled (it fed 3). I'm a good cook, and it turned out fine. But it was not as good as the previously-frozen Salmon that I get for nearly half that price at any local Grocery store. Despite my disappointment with that purchase, I thought that I should try their fried fish for lunch, which gets rave reviews on Yelp. I ordered the fish roll sandwich minus the sauce, but it came drenched in it. I took it back to the counter, and they said they would make it again. After a long wait, they called out, "Here's your 'special' fish roll sandwich." Much to my disbelief, it was again covered in sauce. I again took it back to the counter and said that I was confused because I ordered my sandwich without sauce, but it had sauce on it again. The employ who was making the food replied: "I put just a little sauce on it, but I wiped it off, so it's fine." I received no apology for receiving two wrong orders during a single visit, and got serious attitude for my asking him to make it again. The third time it came out correctly (without any sauce). All poor customer service aside, the fried fish was mediocre. I give this place my lowest possible score, and strongly recommend anyone reading this to go elsewhere. Given the competition in the food industry, places like this need to go out of business and make room for others who want to provide good food and good service. read more

My family and I LOVE Newman's.... but tonight..... they get a BIG FAT F!!!! The treatment that was displayed to patrons thus evening was abominable. My husband over heard one clerk say ,"what the F!?" to another employee when they saw patrons trying to find a seat on the patio after they had just ordered. In the Valley this is the best place to get some halibut and fries!! The cole slaw is GREAT also. The fish is flaky and tasty. I am originally from the coast, and honestly, I would MUCH RATHER eat at Newmans Grotto Vs. Fishermans Grotta in Charly town...(charleston). You do not have to make a drive to the coast for good fish and chips. Newmans off coburg is great and much closer than a 2 1/2 hour drive. VERY WELL PRICED!!! I like both Newman's locations but I go to the Grotto more often since I can walk there from work. If I didn't know that fried food was bad for me, then I would eat their salmon and chips every day. Instead I stop in for my fix about once a month. I have never been disappointed with their fish and chips of any variety. I simply cannot stand their chowder though. It's just odd. Runny and flavorless and gritty, none of these things make sense to me. I think I've had and liked about everything they have to offer including fish tacos, fish rolls, rice, and coleslaw, but I will not order their clam chowder. It's a shame since I love clam chowder. I should probably try it again but I hated it so much the first few times that I can't bring myself to order it. Shrug. I also occasionally buy their fresh fish for special occasions. It's really too expensive for me to buy frequently, but I've never been disappointed by what I've purchased. I like the market on Willamette which is not present at the Grotto, but the seating is better at the Grotto as is the service in general. Although both spaces are limited, the Grotto has more tables and an awning which is helpful in the winter. I still end up making Newman's a carry out place in the winter and a sit-in-the-sun place on nice days. I think the people working the counter on Willamette take longer without being as friendly as the Grotto. I've never had a bad experience at either place but generally feel the Grotto is superior. So let me tell you about the salmon and chips. The salmon is damn good. The tasty and crispy breading is wrapped around thick cuts of salmon that are cooked through and still moist. Their tartar sauce is great as well. The fries recently changed, but that's alright since fries are fries. The portion is perfect to large. I usually end up splitting the fries with my husband. I just have to insist that anyone new to Eugene go to either Newman's and try the salmon and chips. Because you should. Because it's delicious. read more

I feel like quality has declined a bit over the years. Fries are always soggy and cold. Good tartar. Sometimes fish is over cooked. I prefer battered fish over breaded. I got the cod basket and added 4 shrimp, $11.00. The fish & shrimp were over done, deep fried to a crisp. A hard, crunchy, cocoon crispy shell. The up side, they weren't greasy. The fries were limp and greasy. They took out the fries to soon and left the fish in to long. They use to have a really good tarter sauce, not any more. It tastes like it's from McMenamin's North Bank where everything has to much horseradish. Hired one of their cooks? I am now a way big fan of this place. Had the Cod fish and chips and they were wonderful. Price for them is really well placed and is pretty quick to get done. They also have other choices such as Halibut, and other fish for your selection for a quick bite. They also have a nice fish bar for you to get your fresh fish from. What's not to like about Newman's? The seafood is fresh and fantastic. The service is great. The fries are delicious. I think I go here whenever I don't know what I'm craving and if I'm not too too hungry. Fish and chips is my default. And the price is reasonable, especially for the quality you're getting! If you want some good seafood, this place is for you. Don't expect to get a seat if you come during peak hours. There are perhaps 2-3 tables and bar seats off to the side. There's an outside seating area, but that's only if weather permits. Anyway, be prepared to do to-go. read more

Fried seafood is one of those sublime things that seems simple but turns out to be harder than you think. It's so easy to turn out overcooked, greasy or under seasoned food, and so difficult to do it exactly right every time. We've been to the Newman's Willamette location, and found it to be pretty darn good. One big problem there is that there is practically no seating, just a couple of picnic tables. This location is better, but still mostly offers outdoor seating. With the weather getting nicer, that was fine for a Friday evening dinner. DLW had a prawn roll, heavy on the dill, and not too much sauce. I could easily polish off a couple of those. She also had clam chowder, which was a thin consistency but nicely clammy in flavor. I opted for shrimp and chips, which came perfectly cooked and well seasoned, but a little small on the portion size. They seem wary of passing out sauces, limiting you to two servings per order. I had one each of cocktail and tartar sauce, the former being good and the latter being great. They sell beer in cans here, only four selections, but still appreciated. Some have complained about bad service here, but we didn't experience it, and they were pretty busy. The location is odd, next to a Ben and Jerry's and not really accessible except by car.
