Fresh, flavorful, and some of the best we've had. What really made our visit special, though, was the experience. We enjoyed great conversation, and one of the highlights was seeing the owner's son proudly show us the crab he had caught. It gave us a glimpse into the local fishing life and made the meal feel even more authentic. Great food, warm hospitality, and a genuine local atmosphere made this one of the highlights of our Oregon trip. We got to try their brand new Po'Boy crab and shrimp sandwiches... absolutely AMAZING!! So fresh and the flavor with the sauce is so good! We also got to try their smoked salmon chowder and a crab clam chowder. So fresh and flavorful it was delicious! We also bought their famous smoked salmon... insanely good! We passed the Krab Kettle a few times and decided to stop in and grab a crab cocktail to try. We were a little late in the day around 5 and so they were sold out of the crab. My husband also wanted the bay shrimp cocktail which he said was ok maybe a little fishy. I am not a fan of bay shrimp due to their mushy texture so I had one small bite. The cocktail sauce was good and I was given some oyster crackers which the kids loved. They also have packets of lemon, hot sauce, salt, and pepper to add on your cocktail. The guy working was friendly and explained that I could always call ahead and order the crab cocktail. They would keep it fridgerated until I was able to pick it up. I was here very recently, just to try the chowder. It was good! It's definitely fresh, has plenty of clams, and the seasoning is good. This isn't a restaurant but they do have some to go items and I had heard that the chowder was the best in Florence. I'd give it a good 3.5/4/. Karen, the long-time manager who recently retired, always let me call ahead to reserve a few pounds of fresh clams for making my beloved clam linguini... and that's the kind of hospitality you just don't get most places. Since Karen retired, the owner is more present and I love his witty, fun and friendly energy too - which continues to make Krab Kettle feel like the best kind of community local haunt. And now that I have my new Krab Kettle swag (sweatshirt & cap), it just reminds me how much I can't wait to get back to the Oregon Coast and return to my local fave place for the freshest seafood and kindest folks. BEST CLAM CHOWDER in town!!!!! First things first the chowder is filled with big pieces of clams. These are not your canned variety of clams. Someone went and chucked some clams fresh for the chowder made fresh daily. You have to get their early so it doesn't run out. The base is thick and rich. Each bite is a flavorful mouth full of ocean and land. Thai is literally the best chowder in town. Did I say that already? This is an excellent fresh crab (seafood) shack on the Hwy 101 in Florence. We ordered fresh Dungeness crab which was cleaned and packed in ice for our short trip further down the coast. No, this is NOT a restaurant and you can't eat it inside anywhere, but there are picnic tables outsides. Or if the weather is awful, just eat it in your car. It is so worth it. We are taste testing chowder along the coast, so this review is only for a bowl of clam chowder.... But I have to say it was absolutely fantastic! Flavorful and tasty, with the appropriate amount of potatoes (ie not too many) and clams. The clams weren't huge. I'm guessing they were chopped up, which I personally prefer (another location had huge clams in it, leading to lots of unnecessary chewing). I wouldn't say the chowder was particularly thick, but it didn't need to be. Rather it was creamy and just the right consistency- not too thick, not too thin.... Just right. Of the three chowders we had today, this was by far, by FAR, the best. Lots of signs saying the chowder isn't ready until 12 noon.... Chowder this good takes time after all... read more
