We had such a great experience at Pono Hukilau--this place truly delivered on every level. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt welcoming and relaxed, with that perfect coastal Hawaiian fusion vibe that just fits so well. The food was outstanding across the board. The kids' fish and chips were a pleasant surprise--made with real rockfish, which you don't always see on a kids' menu, and it was done perfectly. Emma loved her sushi roll, and LaRue's shrimp sliders were packed with flavor and cooked just right. I went with the panko fried prawns along with the Hawaiian pulled pork, and both were absolutely excellent--crispy, fresh, and full of flavor. Even the appetizer set the tone for the meal--it was clear right away that they care about quality. What really stood out, though, was the combination of great food and great service. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable without being overbearing. The Hukilau is a fun, festive classic staple in Florence, Oregon. This restaurant you walk in and it just feels fun. It feels welcoming. The staff are so wonderful. The attitudes are positive. This restaurant feels like a good time. The prices have gone up. I blame the economic conditions rather than the owners themselves. The food sometimes I feel like the sauce is too much or the food is too sweet or too salty. I don't feel that the food is super consistent every time I go. I love supporting local business owners. I love the story of the restaurant how it started as a food truck. I just wish the food was more consistent when you order. read more

Long wait times for your food and drinks. Why would anyone serve imitation crab at the Oregon coast? Great vibes, music, bar, staff and food. It's a small place with beach shack vibes, walls and ceiling colorfully decorated with surfboard, flags and other treasures. Especially nice to see a reconstituted sovereign flag flying. The wait was a bit long but it was so worth it. I really recommend the Mai tai and Pele's chicken. The food was good though it took quite a while to get and they seemed to be out of or running low on quite a few things. Most of the seating was outside as they seemed to be quite a smaller place though it was hard to tell since they made you wait outside to be seated so my party never actually got to see inside. The service was very low though with waiters both taking a long time to bring things and rushing you to finish. A few other people finished eating before getting all of their order and ended up leaving before it even got to them. The main problem was that they couldn't split the bill my party had into even parts based on what we ordered so a few of us over paid which has happened before at other restraints so not too bad. But the kicker was that they then straight up ignored the tip amount I gave and charged me their minimum 18% tip amount. The Hukilau is my "Happy Place" restaurant. The atmosphere is so fun and festive. I love the Hawaiian shirts and surfboards on the ceiling. It's fun to see big screen TVs showing surfing, fishing and boating around the islands. The menu is varied, and the food is very good, especially the sushi. If you're going there for dinner, make sure you get there a little early. It can be busy and they close at 6:30. read more

Cool vibe in the restaurant, but really loud with crashing prep pans. Service is s l o w, and there is a sign stating that by the front door, so we expected that. I ordered a Spam musabi and a sushi roll. Spam was barely cooked, so no crispy goodness, and the sauce was mediocre. The roll was a bit better, but not by much. My wife had the baby back ribs and whole hog shredded pork. The ribs were good, the pork was dry and flavorless. Read so many good reviews and was disappointed with our experience. We've been to HI and the flavors POP, so was excited to try someplace with 4+ stars. Anemic comparison at best, I would not recommend Hukilau; there's too many better places to eat in Florence. read more

We celebrated my wife's birthday yesterday by driving to Florence from Eugene. Eugene doesn't have a place like Hukulai. We arrived just after they opened (11:15) and were welcomed with "aloha!" Starving, we threw down an order for an appetizer right away, which we found on the daily menu for Thursday, November 15. it was this amazing shrimp-filled, lightly crusted, deep fried miracle of goodness. Our waiter, Mike, said he had been the guinea pig the night before and that it was a great choice. And it was. Large serving, too! We kept stringing appetizers together because the lunch crowd was slow arriving. We had a barbecued baby back rib appetizer, which was splendid and substantial. The meat came on top of a mound of lovely coleslaw. there was a seaweed salad with shrimp in it, which I loved (my wife is suspicious of the ingredients in seaweed salad). maui IPAs... Perfect. we had ordered an unagi sushi roll ("69 at the Hukilau" - hey, that's what it's called) a little too late in the game, as the crowd had filled the place and thrown in orders as well. fortunately, this young couple who sat next to us, had taken our recommendation to order the same roll, So we determined to let them have it. We were ready to roll out when this fanfare played over the stereo and the staff all started singing happy birthday to Jean. Menu is fairly extensive and prices are what you would expect for the area. Burger was about $20, pulled pork plate also $20. We got the surf and turf sliders special for $9, musubi $5.50. Prices are very decent I think for the portions you get. They have different specials everyday too. Food was mostly good, the burger was not that serious though I think. It was extremely greasy & made the bun fall apart + soggy, couldn't eat the bottom of it, fries were bland. The sliders were great, my boyfriends pork plate was pretty good. I regret not ordering sushi, I will definitely try that next time! Service was very ehh, barely got checked on and only got 1 drink refill the entire time, pretty much only saw the waiter again at the end for the bill. We arrived a little after 5pm and were told there were 2 tables ahead of us and it would be a 45 minute wait. We had a 4yr old with us and couldn't sit at the sushi bar. We kept thinking we had put in all this time waiting and stayed because we really wanted to try the food but we kept getting bumped with locals that the host Mikey I think was his name knew. We waited almost 2 hours to get seated! And still people came in after us and got their order in and food before we were served! Totally discriminated against and constantly snubbed! It was terrible. The food was delicious. It was nice to get Hawaiian food in the middle of Central Oregon (Florence, Oregon) about an hour and some change from Eugene and Bandon. We stopped in for an early dinner after our flight into Eugene on our way to Bandon for some golf. When we first walked in, was super busy. Once seated, it wasn't too bad. Our waitress was nice and very accommodating. The food was also pretty good. Not much to think about for Hawaiian food that far into Oregon. My Loco Moco was good but a bit salty, I would order it again minus the saltiness of the gravy. I also got the Mac Nut Pancakes which was super tasty. Loved the vibes, a lot of locals and chill spot. The food was a bit slow as well, considering the crowds had left. 5 stars if the food wasn't a bit salty and the food came out a bit quicker.
