We had such a great experience at Pono Hukilau--this place truly delivered on every level. The kids' fish and chips were a pleasant surprise--made with real rockfish, which you don't always see on a kids' menu, and it was done perfectly. The attitudes are positive. This restaurant feels like a good time. The prices have gone up. I blame the economic conditions rather than the owners themselves. The food sometimes I feel like the sauce is too much or the food is too sweet or too salty. I don't feel that the food is super consistent every time I go. I love supporting local business owners. I love the story of the restaurant how it started as a food truck. I just wish the food was more consistent when you order. read more

Then the food came out completely blown away so delicious and plated so pretty ,we end up sharing we got the teriyaki chicken the shrimp and then it came with rice and Hawaiian Mac . they had Ginger and Thai basil to garnish and it went so good with it also came with a dipping sauce yum. I wish I could have it right now Drinks were really good. Husband got the tea. It was pretty strong, but it was he was OK with that because we were walking. We were staying in Florence. Great place to stop for some Hawaiian fusion grub! Definitely a place I would visit again when I'm in the area.

I realize that there may be a long wait but the food is definitely worth it. My husband ordered the clams pasta but they were out of clams and substituted with prawns and a lot of them. I go to the Hukilau about once a week, the service is always friendly, and the food is amazing. The chef specials are actually something special not something left over. The Indonesian soft shelled crab sliders are to die for I've had them twice. They have an enormous selection of sushi and plenty of other cooked offerings as well. One of my favorites is the Hawaiian catch of the day fish tacos. This is not a little baby street taco this is an enormous taco filled with fish and vegetables. I highly recommend the Pono Hkilau! Great vibes, music, bar, staff and food. It's a small place with beach shack vibes, walls and ceiling colorfully decorated with surfboard, flags and other treasures. Especially nice to see a reconstituted sovereign flag flying. The wait was a bit long but it was so worth it. I really recommend the Mai tai and Pele's chicken. The food was good though it took quite a while to get and they seemed to be out of or running low on quite a few things. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Most of the seating was outside as they seemed to be quite a smaller place though it was hard to tell since they made you wait outside to be seated so my party never actually got to see inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was very low though with waiters both taking a long time to bring things and rushing you to finish. A few other people finished eating before getting all of their order and ended up leaving before it even got to them. The main problem was that they couldn't split the bill my party had into even parts based on what we ordered so a few of us over paid which has happened before at other restraints so not too bad. But the kicker was that they then straight up ignored the tip amount I gave and charged me their minimum 18% tip amount. The Hukilau is my "Happy Place" restaurant. The atmosphere is so fun and festive. I love the Hawaiian shirts and surfboards on the ceiling. It's fun to see big screen TVs showing surfing, fishing and boating around the islands. The menu is varied, and the food is very good, especially the sushi. If you're going there for dinner, make sure you get there a little early. It can be busy and they close at 6:30. read more

Cool vibe in the restaurant, but really loud with crashing prep pans. Service is s l o w, and there is a sign stating that by the front door, so we expected that. I ordered a Spam musabi and a sushi roll. Spam was barely cooked, so no crispy goodness, and the sauce was mediocre. The roll was a bit better, but not by much. My wife had the baby back ribs and whole hog shredded pork. The ribs were good, the pork was dry and flavorless. Read so many good reviews and was disappointed with our experience. We've been to HI and the flavors POP, so was excited to try someplace with 4+ stars. Anemic comparison at best, I would not recommend Hukilau; there's too many better places to eat in Florence. read more

We celebrated my wife's birthday yesterday by driving to Florence from Eugene. Eugene doesn't have a place like Hukulai. We arrived just after they opened (11:15) and were welcomed with "aloha!" Starving, we threw down an order for an appetizer right away, which we found on the daily menu for Thursday, November 15. it was this amazing shrimp-filled, lightly crusted, deep fried miracle of goodness. Our waiter, Mike, said he had been the guinea pig the night before and that it was a great choice. And it was. Large serving, too! We kept stringing appetizers together because the lunch crowd was slow arriving. We had a barbecued baby back rib appetizer, which was splendid and substantial. The meat came on top of a mound of lovely coleslaw. there was a seaweed salad with shrimp in it, which I loved (my wife is suspicious of the ingredients in seaweed salad). maui IPAs... Perfect. we had ordered an unagi sushi roll ("69 at the Hukilau" - hey, that's what it's called) a little too late in the game, as the crowd had filled the place and thrown in orders as well. fortunately, this young couple who sat next to us, had taken our recommendation to order the same roll, So we determined to let them have it. We were ready to roll out when this fanfare played over the stereo and the staff all started singing happy birthday to Jean. They brought out this little bowl of ice cream with delicious chocolate and a candle! A perfect lunch on a perfect day. read more

Menu is fairly extensive and prices are what you would expect for the area. Burger was about $20, pulled pork plate also $20. We got the surf and turf sliders special for $9, musubi $5.50. Prices are very decent I think for the portions you get. They have different specials everyday too. Food was mostly good, the burger was not that serious though I think. It was extremely greasy & made the bun fall apart + soggy, couldn't eat the bottom of it, fries were bland. The sliders were great, my boyfriends pork plate was pretty good. I regret not ordering sushi, I will definitely try that next time! Service was very ehh, barely got checked on and only got 1 drink refill the entire time, pretty much only saw the waiter again at the end for the bill.
