Mo's is an Oregon Coast institution. It isn't fine dining, but it isn't a dive. It's just sometimes what you want because it's familiar. It's usually loud with children and older folks talking, and that's okay. I go there for the fish and chips. It's really all about expectations. When I look for a fish and chips joint based on good reviews, and I am not blown away, I can leave disappointed. However, when I know going in not to expect miracles, above average can be what the doctor ordered. Enter Mo's. I had the cod. I prefer battered, but the fish isn't bad for breaded. It's delicate and properly fried, and without the taste of overworked oil. I give it a 6 out of 10 score. The fries have a coating of some sort that helps them stay crispy. Whoever invented doing that needs to win a James Beard Award. I also had clam chowder, which was rock solid, but my socks are still on my feet. To drink I had a Virgin Mary, which is a Bloody Mary without the vodka. It was pretty good. I highly recommend it for those behind the wheel who crave that distinctive flavor. I went here for lunch with a friend today. We arrived around 1:15pm and waited in line for a table for about 15 minutes. We were brought to a table with a lovely view of the water and took our time with the menu. Our server had a trainee with her and was very kind and patient with her. We ordered the shrimp artichoke dip as an appetizer, the crispy chicken burger with onion rings, and the cod sandwich with clam chowder. The dip was so good! It was very oily, a little too oily for my taste, but the flavor was fantastic and it wasn't fishy at all. I do wish they gave us more bread, though, as we ran out and still had dip leftover. The chicken sandwich was good, but the chicken was too small so some bites were just bun and lettuce. The onion rings were fine but needed more salt and seasoning. The chowder was alright but was oily and a bit gritty. I've had better clam chowder down the street for sure. The staff were busy but nice. We weren't left alone for too long. I did wish we were given water refills, the whole meal we only had one glass of water each which isn't enough when you are eating salty seafood. The restaurant was pretty clean and tables were turning over quickly. They have their own dedicated parking lot, but if you can't find a spot there is also plenty of street parking. All in all this was a fine place to eat. It was fairly affordable for a tourist town, but it was pretty oily. The dip was the best part, even with how oily it was. Without the dip this would have been a 3-star visit, but the dip definitely bumped it up a bit. read more

From the moment you walk in, the ambiance immediately stands out--lively, energetic, and full of character. It's definitely on the noisier side, but in a fun, bustling way. The customer service was exceptional. The staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and impressively fast without ever making us feel rushed. You can tell they genuinely care about the experience. Now, the food--starting with the chowder. It was delicious, packed with large chunks of potato and generously sized clams. A very solid start to the meal. The French fries were cooked perfectly crispy, though a bit on the bland side--definitely better with ketchup. The salad, on the other hand, was a standout. Easily a 10/10. The shrimp were great, and the freshness and crispness of the greens really made it shine. For the main courses, the shrimp melt was fantastic--great portion size and loaded with both cheese and shrimp. They definitely didn't skimp. The shrimp skewers with fettuccine Alfredo were absolutely amazing and full of flavor. Lastly, the fish tacos had some highs and lows. The portion size was great, and both the sauce and salsa were very enjoyable. However, the fish itself was a bit bland and relied on the toppings to carry the flavor. This is ur typical seafood on the waterfront. Arrived around 1ish for a late lunch and was seated almost immediately. We ordered the fettuccine Alfredo w/ grilled shrimp (which had crispy breadcrumbs)-- this happened to be our favorite since it was well seasoned and al dente. We ordered blackened fish tacos, it was a little dry and wished it had more flavor. We also tried the combo platter which included fried clams (our favorite, suprised we haven't tried this before), fried rockfish, and fried shrimp- tasted mid, as expected. They came with sides od your choice, we went with coleslaw and bay shrimp added- pleasantly sweet, and clam chowder-pretty decent. The seating is nice so that you can view the river, but the sun does reflect quite a bit. So the lighting is a little difficult as reflected in my photos. read more

Visiting Oregon and was told to visit Mo's...I did and it was a good experience. I do not give 5 stars on my first visit, keep this in mind when you see I gave 4 stars. Seated right away for a late weekday lunch. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house but I loved my seat right along the water. Server was engaged and responsive. Eating by myself I was a pretty easy table but he did not forget about me. Famous for the clam chowder, I have never had chowder before but I left wanting more clam chowder, at least that clam chowder. My entree was butterflied breaded shrimp. I could have ate double the amount provided they were so good and the cocktail sauce was dynamite. If I ever return to Florence I would surely go back to Mo's!! read more

I wanted so badly to give this place a 5/5, but the clam chowder was just underwhelming. I don't mind a thicker and creamy base for my chowder, but I struggled to find the clam in it, or even a clam flavor. It was very hot and buttery, so it wasn't a complete miss. The rest of the meal was excellent and I was impressed with how crispy the fries were. The view from the table was excellent. It's not a high dining place, but you will feel comfortable. I took my 29 year old son to get lunch. We both got the halibut fish and chips. We both got clam chowder for our sides and neither disappointed. I also got the shrimp skewers on fettuccine alfredo for take out for my husband, I also took home 2 bags of ready to go chowder. Spent $110 for all 4 items. Not bad pricing, plus everything we got was fantastic. It was very busy, but we didn't have to wait long. Those who have service dogs that have vests, make sure you have them wear it. I totally forgot to bring my little service dogs vest(not needed) by the way, but the greeter said they don't allow pets and I explained she's not a pet. I remember Mo's clam chowder when I was a kid in the 1970s. I was rather disappointed with what it has become. It's more of a potato and bacon soup with some clams in it. Service was good and place was clean, but my childhood memories remain unrefreshed with what I used to think was the most awesome chowder ever. While staying on the Oregon coast we happened to be lucky enough to try the clam chowder here at Mo's. I have to say it probably the best clam chowder I've ever had. It had just the perfect amount of bacon, potatoes and clam's that had me coming back for more. Three days in a row to be exact, lol don't judge me. The service was good and the place had great views of the river. Side note this location doesn't have a patio so if you have a pet you will have to order to go. I feel like Mo's was over hyped to us. Its loud inside and you sit at almost picnic tables. It was cool because it was on the river. We all got clam chowder and it tasted pre-made from maybe a can, not the best, but not the worst. We got fish and chips and grilled shrimp, the shrimp lacked in flavor but all the fried food was crispy. The cocktail and tartar sauces were good. Great casual place on the water. Sets off from the bank on sort of a pier of its own extending into and over the river. Lots of tables lining the window for great views. Even the tables not against the windows offer a nice view of the water to include seal lions swimming by. Our service for dinner was prompt from being immediately seated, then waited on by our server. I hope you get "Moses", a very nice young man, who is also very knowledgeable of their menu items including recommendations . . . we had never dined here before. We had the Cannonball clam chowder which is a good sized serving in a sourdough bread bowl. The fish and chips . . . we went with the halibut versus the cod . . . was excellent. The batter was not that gross thick kind other places often have. Thin, but just enough to round out the flavor of the halibut, not drown it out because of too much batter. It came with a choice of sides. On the recommendation of Moses we went with the Cabbage, tarter sauce and shrimp salad. It was a unique combination of ingredients for a unique taste. Dining in Old Town [Florence OR] They said a trip to Florence is not complete without a meal at Mo's so before heading back to Coos Bay we had dinner here. We were seated by the window which was nice but, unfortunately, the sun had already set and was dark outside so we weren't able to watch fishing boats pass or see sea lions play in the water. We wanted to try "Mo's world famous clam chowder" so we ordered a cup each to try. It was a bit on the salty side (maybe just my taste buds). Definitely wouldn't claim it to be "world famous." I also ordered a plate of cod fish & chips (kids meal size). I wasn't that hungry. I wouldn't be able to finish 4 pieces of fish. Two was good. Hubby ordered the shrimp skewer. The shrimps were grilled in garlic butter (it was very good... my hubby shared). For dessert we shared a Marionberry Cobbler w/ vanilla ice cream. This was new to my tastebuds. Warm and fruity on the inside with a yummy buttery crunch crust. So every time I come into Eugene, we generally make a trip to the coast and with that being said, we generally stop at Mo's for a late lunch. They always seem to impress here and they have a nice variety of food. We came on memorial day so they were a little crowded and service was a little slow, but not bad at all. Our waiter took care of all of our needs. they also have restaurants that I know of in Newport, Oregon and in the Portland airport may be some other places also... Great stuff read more

Since we were on the Oregon Coast, we wanted seafood and a view of the water. Mo's doesn't overlook the ocean, but it has a wall of window tables overlooking the river. I was able to watch crabbers pulling up and emptying their crab traps throughout my entire meal. It's a large space holding a lot of tables and many of them have the window view. Our server was friendly and prompt. The bathroom was clean. For food, we ordered the fried clams with the shrimp and cabbage salad and fries and the seafood combo with the chowder and fries. I loved the shrimp and cabbage salad. It was substantial portion of chopped cabbage with a creamy garlic dressing and a decent portion of sweet baby sized shrimp. Very tasty. The fried clams were a decent sized portion, nothing standout but yummy. The fries were OK, not as crispy as I like, but pretty standard fare. The seafood combo included fried clams, three fried shrimp, and two hunks of fried cod. All good, nothing unusual. The chowder was good, again nothing to write home about. With the exception of the awesome shrimp and cabbage salad, the food was fine and just what you would expect it to be. I'd be happy to go back to Mo's. We had a wonderful dinner with the kids enjoying the Linguine Alfredo with Shrimp and Chicken. We heard about their famous clam chowder, so we ordered it family style. For an 8-person table with 4 adults, 2 teens and 2 elementary-aged kids, it was just right. I loved the Hot Shrimp Artichoke Dip. The kids were too quick for me. So we had to order more bread, cause it was gone so quickly and we still had a lot of artichoke dip left. It was very tasty and rich in flavor. The bonus aspect was the dish being served warm. So the cheese extends a bit when you dip it before you can put on your plate. The dads enjoyed their oyster shooters. They especially liked the cocktail sauce that came with it. It was refreshing. I always love coming here. I was very disappointed that they no longer have oysters as that was my favorite menu item. I ended up going with the combination plate with some clams, shrimp, fish. It was good. Very good actually. Not overcooked or undercooked. Nice crispy batter on the outside and moist and fresh on the inside. Our server was amazing and the food came out quite fast. I feel like the prices have increased but the services were adequate for the price, not to mention everyone has to adjust for inflation. Overall, great experience as always. I used to come here a lot as a kid with my family, so I'm definitely familiar to the food and vibes, it's kind of just nostalgic to come here. Today the customer service was fine honestly, nothing really that serious. Not 100% attentive but it's like almost always busy in this restaurant. Food took some time but the waitress claimed a lot of the kitchen staff is new, no worries there. We got the food and honestly it wasn't that serious. Definitely not the best seafood in town, but it's also not like bad either. The combination plate is almost $22, and the salmon plate is $20, the prices aren't crazy. Probably will branch out and try elsewhere when I'm in Florence again, but to be fair there aren't a whole lot of choices to begin with. I had a great experience at Mo's. There was a pretty long line when we first got there but it ended up moving very quickly. The whole restaurant has a waterfront view and it's in a great location. Has a nice coastal charm. Employees were extremely friendly always asking us if we needed anything and apologizing for the food being delayed when it actually came pretty fast! Impeccable service. I got the fish tacos which were great. The clam chowder is a must though. Thick and delicious with lots of shrimp and potatoes. You can upgrade any soup to come served in a bread bowl which is a nice touch. Portions are very generous and food is reasonably priced. What can I say about Mo's? They certainly do heavy marketing and heavy advertising. The food? I would say about average. I have had their salmon, fish n chips and chowder, and the typical bread bowl. If you are looking for food with a "bang for the buck" Mo's isn't bad. Need some grub before driving back the valley? Go for it. But for that special night out? Look elsewhere. The chowder is not bad. It's not great either. For me it's not something memorable. Consider it 1 step above Campbells $2 Chunky Chowder with a bit of melted butter. One thing I dislike is the fact that one of Mo's bean-counters, probably the manager, decided to remove the saltine crackers. So now, unless you ask for more, you get 2 (two) saltine crackers with your chowder. Fortunately they have not removed the salt and pepper. But who knows....to cut costs, that may be next. The fries with the fish n chips are pretty unmemorable. But then again fries at 75% of restaurants are pretty unmemorable these days. The cod fish was slightly above average. I do congratulate Mo's on the fact that they don't heavily bread their fish n chips like some other cheapskate restaurants do. It's lightly breaded and I like that. I would have given Mo's a solid 3 stars. However I'm deducting a star and giving just 2 stars because they have recently implemented Guilt Tipping. Guilt Tipping is where the waitress comes to your table, and instead of giving you a check, she hands over the little tablet with all the "suggested tip amounts" already there. Swipe left to leave a custom tip. No tip? I can't remember if that's an option without swiping. Anyway, as a guest, I'm not comfortable with the waitress holding the tablet over my table while I think about the service we received and apply the tip so she can think to herself what a cheapskate I am for doing 15%. Overcooked and battered cod with freezer french fries. Generic coleslaw topped with a scoop of defrosted bay shrimp. Forget about dessert, just let me outta here.
