There is nothing better than good Fish n Chips. Newman's halibut and chips are pretty good, but not the best. I started eating there after Old English closed. I feel like quality has declined a bit over the years. Fries are always soggy and cold. Good tartar. Sometimes fish is over cooked. I prefer battered fish over breaded. Overall, it's our choice when we are craving fish n chips. read more

This place deserves so many more 5-star ratings!! It's my go-to spot for a healthy lunch of grilled salmon and brown rice. Sometimes I splurge and get the awesome halibut fish and chips which are out of this world. Take-out is easy or sit in their porch area on a nice day. I go often, and never get sick of it! I've also purchased their fresh fish for BBQs and it's always been great! The people behind the counter are so nice and helpful. read more

Awesome french fries and the fish is really good (firm, great batter, keeps in transit). No place to sit, really. Maybe three tables inside with a small counter and stools. Outside seating is ample but not for this time of year. Nice employees. Parking lot is shared with other strip mall businesses. Definitely a take-out place. A little pricey, but a nice treat. The Willamette street location has a window for pickup with some outdoor seating. Always busy--even in bad weather! Great customer service. I like the Willamette spot better. It gets four stars from me. read more

They make decent fried fish here, decent size. Fries are okay. They do some volume here. I'd come more often if it were close to home, but don't need to drive across town for this, especially considering Fisherman's market is closer to me and serves more authentic fish & chips (even though their service can be bad). read more

Tried Newman's today for first time. Impressed. I ordered Cod Fish & Chips. The fish had a nice, crispy coating and the fries were great, The tarter sauce was even better than most. I was prepared to be disappointed thinking another overpriced lunch, but not so. Great location. Very limited seating indoors, but more seating outdoors. The menu had a good variety. I am anxious to try the Smoked Salmon Clam Chowder. read more

Order was timely and accurate. Salmon was delicious as always. Masks and gloves in place...I can always count on Newman's Grotto.

A pretty great place that offers no-fuss fried fish fare and other seafood comfort dishes in a modern interior. While sparse in indoor seating, their outdoor area has plenty areas to sit under a shaded area. The food was pretty good in their simple menu. What's here is fried fish and they do it quite well in keeping the fish crunchy-yet-tender. A sucker for fried scallops will find definite satisfaction within. People wanting something grilled will find a good amount of options. Nothing too surprising but don't let that be a mark against it; there is good food to be had served in big portions. The only reason it doesn't get a fifth star is that nothing really stood out. read more

The workers were very friendly and the fish and chips were delicious. My girlfriend also enjoyed her halibut. One of my fav new spots

Thank you for the wonderful Cod Fish & Chips takeout! It was delicious, as always. Plus it was ready the minute we arrived to pick it up. Can't beat that! read more

Had the basic fish and chips: halibut and cod. Prefer batter coating to this place's crumb-fishstick type crust. But the fish inside tasted very fresh. Fries are respectable. It's a nice clean space with a cozy back patio. I'd be totally satisfied, had I been passing through and just stopped by. read more

We have been getting fish and chips forever from Newman's. We love it and would recommend to everyone.

The absolute BEST seafood around. Their fish & chips, shrimp & chips, chowder, specials - it's all EXCELLENT! I absolutely love the coconut shrimp & fries; it used to be a special but now it's on the menu all the time and it is OH SO GOOD! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The fish & shrimp are always cooked to perfection, tender, moist and juicy. Even my fur children love Newman's. If you haven't tried it ... what are you waiting for??? I can says it's kinda addictive ... but in a really good way. It's never greasy - even the fries are delectable. Oh, and it doesn't smell "fishy", not sure how they keep it from smelling like a fish dock but they do. love love love Newman's - whenever my mom and I get to go out for lunch, we always go here and we always love how it's consistently delicious. There are very few places where you get the same outstanding meal each & every time. Thank you Newman's!! read more

Newman's is really good. My mom and I love fish and this place is amazing. There are tons of options, both fried and grilled and the staff is very nice. They get your food out quickly too. They make it to order. I will definitely go back and suggest this to any other fish lover read more

Great place to stop for a variety of Fish & Chips. Coconut Shrimp was delicious. We also really enjoyed the Curry Clam Chowder off the specials menu. Prices are very reasonable. read more

Best fish and chips in Eugene!! Hands down! Been coming here for years, this place is awesome and the prices are great!

In my mind, fish and chips is either really, really good or it's terrible. There isn't much of a middle ground. And I'm happy to say the fish and chips (I had the salmon and my wife had the cod) was great. Super hot, not too greasy and some excellent fries to go along with it. The patio was very comfortable, but I noticed a lot of to-go orders as well. The service is just an order window, but it was a friendly experience. read more

It had been a while since I had found my way up on this side of town when Newman's was open. I ordered up the daily special of Oregon albacore. Usually I'm not a huge fan of fried tuna, but for $6.50... eh, why not? It came out in about 5 minutes, piping hot, and accompanied with a heaping tray of fries. Like any good fish 'n chips place they have sauces, vinegar, salt, and so on. I doctored up the fries a bit and started chowing. By the time I had finished the fries, the tuna had cooled from 'molten core of the Earth' hot down to 'sear the roof of your mouth' hot. Gotta say that I was happy with the tuna, fried as it was. I left stuffed and smiling, which is more than I can say for a lot of seafood places. The other Newman's location and Fisherman's Market definitely win out for authentic atmosphere, but this location is sparkling clean and efficient. Guess it depends on what you're after. The downside is that while the fish 'n chips are pretty reasonable, their pricing on seafood is astronomically high. Yeah, I know they've got to pay for transport and display, but charging $9.00 a pound for tuna...yikes. Them there are salmon prices. I saw some good tuna loins last week for sale on the coast for $3.50. read more

Can't believe I've lived in this town close to 20 years and have only had Newman's fish and chips all but a handful of times. Don't recall ever having the halibut fish and chips previous but did so last night. So good! Definite step up from your standard fish and chips fare. My usual go-to here is just fresh salmon or halibut to go (to cook at home) but it's nice to go the fish & chips route as a treat every now and then. Outside seating a plus this time of year and beer in cans to wash it all down. Newman's is not the fanciest but for its high-quality fish, it's great having them in town. read more

Interesting take on fish and chips with beverly hills prices! The cod and the salmon (they come as 3 small chunks of each) are nicely breaded but taste like a regular fish-n-chips spot, and they come with really delicious fries or a bit generic slaw. We tried the clam chowder which was salty-peppery, very thing and verging on greasy. Overall, a normal experience, minus one star - $20 for fish and chips for two - in Eugene - that's a bit of a slap on the wallet! whack! read more

I got takeout fish & chips at Newman's Grotto recently and they were terrible! Literally full of grease -- biting into a piece of fish released a dribble of grease. To add insult to injury, an unauthorized $2.00 tip was added to my debit card by the person who processed it. The fries were pretty good though. read more

Ordered three pieces of halibut and a single order of prawns to go so I could add to my fettuccini I was making at home. Taste was good but very skimpy amounts. High prices for the amount you get. I will not be a return customer. read more

In Eugene it is hard to find good seafood, but this place is amazing! The only reason for the four star is that the price for what you get. Otherwise friendly staff and would definitely recommend this place! read more

For casual fish and chips, Newmans is great. My prior review was around the time they opened. They have worked the customer service kinks out so far as I can tell. I have been quite a few times since then and it's always been a good experience with delicious fish and chips at very reasonable prices. read more

Tried Newman's for the first time today in a pursuit to satisfy a fish and chips craving. I got the halibut and chips meal with fries and a side of coleslaw. All though I prefer my fish beer battered, these guys did a darn fine job. The tartar sauce wasn't too bold, with just the right amount of sweetness to compliment the hearty white fish meat; halibut being halibut doesn't need any drowning out. The fish was cooked just right as well. Extra points for having Oakshire available in house. I will definitely be returning. read more

Saw this place when I was waiting in the parking lot while my brother in law got a new phone in the same complex. About a month later my wife says to me sweetly " fish and chips?" And I say "lets try this place over by the cellphone place." Great stuff. She got some cod and shrimp and I got halibut my son got a salmon sandwich and it was all excellent fresh, hot and very tasty. Staff was friendly and wait for food very reasonable. If you have a fish and chips craving this place will fulfill your desires to the utmost. read more

Excellent fish for the price. My order was cooked perfectly, the tartar sauce is good and I had no complaints. Overall, if you're craving fish and chips, this place is a solid establishment to visit. I got mine to go and it was Cod and chips. I will try the one in Portland for the salmon or scallops. read more

Got the cod fish and chips and a canned beer. The food was good as was the service. Fish tasted fresh with a nice crisp batter. I wouldn't hesitate to come back the next time I have a fish and chips craving. read more

Teusday Dec. 16 2014 2:00 pm halibut fish and chips.overcooked, very dry, to go order, they forgot to put in tarter sauce. no fun at all. all other times very good. read more

Eaten Coburg and Downtown for years. Have met fun people at the Willamette patio tables. The salmon is crunch coated and I prefer the meat to be DRY and flaky. I'm rarely disappointed. Occasionally it may be "fish" tasting, but I chalk that up to you can't get a 100% with a fish selection. I wish they would broaden the menu to include more seasonal selections from the sea. YUM read more

Fantastic fish and chips!! Really fresh and dirt cheap. This is one of my favorite spots in Eugene. One time I went there and they were closing in 5 minutes. They still fixed my food and let me hang out and eat while they closed up shop. They didn't have to do this, but it was much appreciated and a really cool experience. read more

Some of the best fried fish and chips Style food in Eugene. Closing at 7pm is the only negative I can think of. The clam chowder is really tasty. The halibut is really fresh. My friend loves the coconut shrimp. There is plenty of fresh fish for sale as well. Call ahead and order your meal and you won't have to wait. read more

We went back and wanted to try some different items. We had scallops, clam chowder, coconut shrimp and salmon and chips. I love scallops but felt the batter was so thick it overwhelmed the scallops. I don't know if they have them grilled but that's what I would order next time if they do. The coconut shrimp was perfect and left us wanting more. Both the salmon and chips were great as well. The clam chowder was good. My preference is for a thicker clam chowder but that is just my taste. Once again the employees were very friendly and the frying oil was fresh. Once again, a really good visit. read more

I stop here every chance I get, love it! The scallops are the best, next to that the halibut. Yum!

The Newman's on Willamette got such love that I tried to like it more than a few times back in the 90s and early oughts. Never got with the buzz, I guess, and as a no-meat-Friday (and during Lent) fellow, that left very little edible choice in Eugene (read: solely Fisherman's on Seventh). I'm back in town now, saw the Grotto on Coburg and thought I'd take another flier. Outstanding fish and chips! Give the Coburg Grotto a chance and you'll never go downtown again. read more

Literally, the best fish and chips I have ever had. EVER. And I live in Seattle where we're surrounded by fresh fish. Newman's makes your order fresh while you wait, is decently priced, and has the best halibut + fries + coleslaw I've ever had. The people working the counter are always really friendly too. Only problem is the location--not sure if they're still on Willamette St., but the new location on Coburg road is small, and it's not always easy to find parking or a place to sit if you want to eat there. If you're just cruising through the neighborhood and want to pick up something to go though, this place can't be beat! read more

Food was hot and fresh. The employees did not seem to happy to be there, so maybe putting on a smile wouldn't hurt. The ketchup bottles were pretty gross. read more

One of my favorite spots in Eugene for seafood. Small, friendly, and the best fresh fish. The Halibut Fish and Chips are the best I've had.....some seating outside in back.....if you're a salmon and/or halibut fan, this is a "must taste" place read more

Seriously, I met a fat man on a beach in Mexico from Green Bay, WS who screamed, "Newman's Fish!" when I told him I was from Eugene. That really happened, during the whole drug war and everything. Until then, I thought Captain's Choice in Coos Bay was the place to go. read more

We have always enjoyed the fresh fish and chips here! When we want fish quick, we bring our family here. Unfortunately the service today left a poor taste in our mouths. We ordered to go and realized when we got home we had been shorted a full order of fish and chips. When we called there was no apology, nothing. When we showed up to pick up the missed order they argued with us! We will not be returning to this location any time soon!! read more

Super tasty fish and chips. They serve cod, salmon and halibut so a nice variety. Cole slaw is pretty good too. They also have fresh local canned tuna and fresh fish. read more
