Ordered the halibut to-go and it amazingly not only survived a 20-30 minute ride in the car but was still hot and fresh. The FISH: The batter is a little different than what I normally think of when I think fish & chips, crunchy, a little more breaded than battered, but it was great. The fish was a good quality and not at all greasy. The portion size was normal and a good amount for something that's been deep-fried. The CHIPS: real potatoes, good size serving, chock full of potato flavor Why not 5 stars? The only drink options were from a soda fountain and I just don't do carbonation and corn syrup. read more

Tried Newman's today for first time. Impressed. I ordered Cod Fish & Chips. The fish had a nice, crispy coating and the fries were great, The tarter sauce was even better than most. I was prepared to be disappointed thinking another overpriced lunch, but not so. Great location. Very limited seating indoors, but more seating outdoors. The menu had a good variety. The halibut and chips were great, probably some of the best I've had anywhere. And they should be, since fish and chips is one of the only items on the menu. The coleslaw was okay. Not terrible, but not as creamy as I'd like. Staff was very friendly, turnaround is fast, prices were reasonable: $6 for cod and chips, $8.50 for halibut, $1.50 for fountain sodas. I knocked a star off for the parking and location itself. Newman's Grotto is in a tiny space, and the inside is easily overrun by customers ordering or waiting for orders. They do have a pick-up window on the outside, next to the patio seating, but nobody seemed to be using that window to order. We were all crammed inside, bumping into each other next to the soda fountain. They share a medium sized lot with Baja Fresh and several other stores, and the parking gets tight during major meal times. There always seem to be cars lurking around the lot, hunting for good spots. Avoid the rush; go for a late lunch and you won't be disappointed. read more

Awesome french fries and the fish is really good (firm, great batter, keeps in transit). No place to sit, really. Maybe three tables inside with a small counter and stools. Outside seating is ample but not for this time of year. Nice employees. Parking lot is shared with other strip mall businesses. Definitely a take-out place. A little pricey, but a nice treat. The Willamette street location has a window for pickup with some outdoor seating. Always busy--even in bad weather! Great customer service. I like the Willamette spot better. A pretty great place that offers no-fuss fried fish fare and other seafood comfort dishes in a modern interior. While sparse in indoor seating, their outdoor area has plenty areas to sit under a shaded area. The food was pretty good in their simple menu. What's here is fried fish and they do it quite well in keeping the fish crunchy-yet-tender. A sucker for fried scallops will find definite satisfaction within. People wanting something grilled will find a good amount of options. Nothing too surprising but don't let that be a mark against it; there is good food to be had served in big portions. The absolute BEST seafood around. Their fish & chips, shrimp & chips, chowder, specials - it's all EXCELLENT! I absolutely love the coconut shrimp & fries; it used to be a special but now it's on the menu all the time and it is OH SO GOOD! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The fish & shrimp are always cooked to perfection, tender, moist and juicy. Even my fur children love Newman's. If you haven't tried it ... what are you waiting for??? I can says it's kinda addictive ... but in a really good way. It's never greasy - even the fries are delectable. Oh, and it doesn't smell "fishy", not sure how they keep it from smelling like a fish dock but they do. love love love Newman's - whenever my mom and I get to go out for lunch, we always go here and we always love how it's consistently delicious. I got takeout fish & chips at Newman's Grotto recently and they were terrible! Literally full of grease -- biting into a piece of fish released a dribble of grease. To add insult to injury, an unauthorized $2.00 tip was added to my debit card by the person who processed it. The fries were pretty good though. read more

It had been a while since I had found my way up on this side of town when Newman's was open. I ordered up the daily special of Oregon albacore. Usually I'm not a huge fan of fried tuna, but for $6.50... eh, why not? It came out in about 5 minutes, piping hot, and accompanied with a heaping tray of fries. Like any good fish 'n chips place they have sauces, vinegar, salt, and so on. I doctored up the fries a bit and started chowing. By the time I had finished the fries, the tuna had cooled from 'molten core of the Earth' hot down to 'sear the roof of your mouth' hot. Gotta say that I was happy with the tuna, fried as it was. I left stuffed and smiling, which is more than I can say for a lot of seafood places. The other Newman's location and Fisherman's Market definitely win out for authentic atmosphere, but this location is sparkling clean and efficient. Guess it depends on what you're after. The downside is that while the fish 'n chips are pretty reasonable, their pricing on seafood is astronomically high. Yeah, I know they've got to pay for transport and display, but charging $9.00 a pound for tuna...yikes. Them there are salmon prices. I saw some good tuna loins last week for sale on the coast for $3.50. read more

Can't believe I've lived in this town close to 20 years and have only had Newman's fish and chips all but a handful of times. Don't recall ever having the halibut fish and chips previous but did so last night. So good! Definite step up from your standard fish and chips fare. My usual go-to here is just fresh salmon or halibut to go (to cook at home) but it's nice to go the fish & chips route as a treat every now and then. Interesting take on fish and chips with beverly hills prices! The cod and the salmon (they come as 3 small chunks of each) are nicely breaded but taste like a regular fish-n-chips spot, and they come with really delicious fries or a bit generic slaw. We tried the clam chowder which was salty-peppery, very thing and verging on greasy. Saw this place when I was waiting in the parking lot while my brother in law got a new phone in the same complex. About a month later my wife says to me sweetly " fish and chips?" And I say "lets try this place over by the cellphone place." Great stuff. She got some cod and shrimp and I got halibut my son got a salmon sandwich and it was all excellent fresh, hot and very tasty. Staff was friendly and wait for food very reasonable. Tried Newman's for the first time today in a pursuit to satisfy a fish and chips craving. I got the halibut and chips meal with fries and a side of coleslaw. All though I prefer my fish beer battered, these guys did a darn fine job. The tartar sauce wasn't too bold, with just the right amount of sweetness to compliment the hearty white fish meat; halibut being halibut doesn't need any drowning out. The fish was cooked just right as well. Extra points for having Oakshire available in house. I will definitely be returning. read more

We went back and wanted to try some different items. We had scallops, clam chowder, coconut shrimp and salmon and chips. I love scallops but felt the batter was so thick it overwhelmed the scallops. I don't know if they have them grilled but that's what I would order next time if they do. The coconut shrimp was perfect and left us wanting more. Both the salmon and chips were great as well. Eaten Coburg and Downtown for years. Have met fun people at the Willamette patio tables. The salmon is crunch coated and I prefer the meat to be DRY and flaky. I'm rarely disappointed. Occasionally it may be "fish" tasting, but I chalk that up to you can't get a 100% with a fish selection. I wish they would broaden the menu to include more seasonal selections from the sea. OMG love it! The fish is so fresh! I was in line standing by the fresh fish and didn't smell anything fishy. I ordered cod fish and chips as well as salmon, scallops, shrimp, and halibut all soooo fresh and yummy. Batter on the fish is light not heavy, not greasy at all. This will be my treat every other Fri. I called in my order which I recommend by the time I arrived and got in line they called my name so no wait as far as I am concerned. The Newman's on Willamette got such love that I tried to like it more than a few times back in the 90s and early oughts. Never got with the buzz, I guess, and as a no-meat-Friday (and during Lent) fellow, that left very little edible choice in Eugene (read: solely Fisherman's on Seventh). Literally, the best fish and chips I have ever had. EVER. And I live in Seattle where we're surrounded by fresh fish. Newman's makes your order fresh while you wait, is decently priced, and has the best halibut + fries + coleslaw I've ever had. The people working the counter are always really friendly too. Only problem is the location--not sure if they're still on Willamette St., but the new location on Coburg road is small, and it's not always easy to find parking or a place to sit if you want to eat there. If you're just cruising through the neighborhood and want to pick up something to go though, this place can't be beat! read more
