    Lots of fresh hot dinner!!

Everything I have said about Chen's is still true. I am adding this update after the recent ice emergency because once again, Chens to the rescue. Janie, front of the house staff, is always friendly and efficient and on a day when we had no power and the entire world was encapsulated in ice, she and the owners came to work and provided us with a delicious hot meal full of vegetables. As usual, there was so much we had leftovers to heat up on our Camp stove back at the house the next day. We CHG!!

OMG! Even bad Chinese food is generally edible. This was THE worst take out I've ever had. And I've had a lot of take out. I don't even know... There are no words to explain how bad this food was. They literally took a tiny egg roll and tried to turn it into a spring roll. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever in anything else we ordered and WTH is up with those fried shrimp? They are square??? And have a gross gelatinous texture. $45 went straight into the trash. Who fucks up American Chinese take out?

IT was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly my tummy growled from hunger. Beloved bride was recovering from her Olympic Gold Medal at Cookie Tossing. After most every meal being on the TV tray in front of the TV -- the dining room table and the kitchen table still covered with tchatkes from Christmas -- I had to go out for a meal. Chen's Happy Garden is about a 7 minute drive from my house. They offer multi-item dinners for an affordable price! I can call for pick-up and not have to worry about dishes. I called and ordered a #5 dinner: Almond Chicken Subgum Chow Mein, Fried Shrimp, Sweet and Sour Pork, Pork Fried Rice -- $12.75. I won't endevour to comment on all the dishes. None were sub-par. None were excellent. All were nothing I would go out of my way for. But for convenience, quick service (15 minutes), LEAK PROOF PACKAGING and cost effectiveness - given the same circumstances, I'd do it all over again. Nobody want's to see a bowl of "ah fooey" (everything dumped into a single pot or bowl), so I'll leave the menu from zmenu and post a picture of my dog. https://www.zmenu.com/chens-happy-garden-eugene-online-menu/

Small hot and sour soup next to the smallest size of egg drop soup. Small is just a few bucks more. No soup to go though.

Good is good. I think takeout might be the way to go. Dining in was muggy and service is so-so. So solid take out.

It's a place that specializes in wheaten food and noodles. Looking at the menu, I noticed a wide variety of options with complex preparation methods. For example, the dough used for regular dumplings is completely different from the dough used for shrimp dumplings (har gow). Shrimp dumplings require wheat starch (cheng mian), which must be kneaded and shaped with water around 70°C (158°F) to form properly. The entire process is incredibly labor-intensive and truly tests the chef's skill level. Ambiance & Environment: You can tell this restaurant has been open for a long time, yet it remains very clean. There is a glass-enclosed prep area where you can watch the staff making the dough and noodles from scratch, which perfectly showcases their specialty. However, I was seated right next to the back door. Since customers have to use this door to access the restrooms, people were constantly walking in and out. The draft was quite strong, causing my food to cool down very quickly. I highly recommend installing a folding screen there. I also overheard other guests asking to switch seats for the same reason, so this is definitely an area management needs to work on. The Food: Since I was dining alone, I only ordered two dishes, but overall, the food deserved high praise: Griddle Cooked Beef (Gan Guo Beef): A classic Sichuan dish. The beef slices were large, the side ingredients were plentiful, and they definitely didn't skimp on the seasoning. It had a rich, robust aroma of spices that burst in your mouth. Delicious! Beef Dumplings: Easily the best dumplings I have ever had on the entire West Coast. The wrappers were thin, the filling was generous, and they were incredibly juicy--literally bursting with flavor with every bite. Highly recommended! Service: Absolutely non-existent! About five minutes after all my food arrived, while I was right in the middle of eating, a server just dropped the bill on my table. I was completely baffled. It wasn't until I pointed out that I still needed rice that they finally took the bill back. Once I finished my meal, I asked for the check. The server gave absolutely no response. Seeing a long line of people waiting outside, I proactively asked a second time because I didn't want to hold up their business. To my surprise, the staff member snapped at me impatiently, saying, "I heard you, I have to go over there to get your bill." It was genuinely infuriating. Good foods. No services

The staff member on the phone assured us it would be fine. However, when we arrived, we were seated and allowed to place our order. Only after we had already ordered did the same staff member inform us that the restaurant only allows service dogs and that we would need to remove our dog. This was extremely frustrating, as we had called in advance specifically to avoid this situation. If this was truly their policy, it should have been clearly communicated over the phone or at least before seating us--not after we had already committed to ordering food. As for the food, it was average and nothing memorable. Unfortunately, the poor service overshadowed the entire experience. We will not be returning.

I always find that Asian food hits the spot when I'm really hungry, so I looked online for a place that "the locals" rated highly and I came across "Jade Dumpling and Noodles" on Willamette. Let me just say that the fine people of Eugene didn't steer me wrong! My oldest son loves dumplings and I love noodles (really any type of Asian food), so this place was a gem! We ordered 3 different kinds of dumplings, shrimp, pork and a spicy pork and they were All Delicious! These "soup dumplings" were small and bite sized but were packed with huge savory flavors! They are made right there and are amazing! I myself had the mixed noodles. House made noodles with beef, chicken, shrimp and vegetables, stir fried in a delicious lite sauce, that enhanced the flavors of the dish, without overpowering it. You could taste all the ingredients and they were fresh and delicious! I cleaned the plate and now I can't wait to return to Jade Dumplings and Noodles again and try their other dishes, that I know will be tasty! The staff is very friendly, helpful and attentive. The restaurant is very clean and comfortable, all in all, a Great dining experience! Try them out and you'll be hooked on them, just like I am now!!!

What surprised me was that most of the customers were Westerners--it's hard to imagine that everyone can handle such bold, heavy flavors, but I decided to give it a try. Environment: The overall lighting is quite dim, with black tables and black chairs. The ambiance is also on the darker side. Taste: We ordered shrimp wontons, dan dan noodles, and a bowl of maocai (a type of spicy boiled dish). The maocai was quite watery, not at all like the rich, thick broth of boiled beef in chili sauce--the ingredients weren't very flavorful. The shrimp wontons were very fresh. The dan dan noodles were delicious. Service: The restaurant is run by a Chinese couple who moved to Eugene about 10 years ago. You can tell they really love this place and run the restaurant with great care. When I was paying, for some reason my card kept getting declined, but the owner actively helped me figure out a solution, which eventually eased the awkwardness. I hope they keep getting better and better!
