I love Chinese food... and make it often. I usually prefer Sichuan food, but also love all of the Chinese American classics like sweet and sour, and General Tso's. I wanted some General Tso's and decided to check out Chens Happy Garden even though the review ratings were a bit low. I walked in, and was greeted and seated immediately. The location was clean, and setup pretty well. I ordered the General Tso's chicken lunch special and a cup of Hot and Sour soup, with water to drink. My water was brought to the table immediately, and the soup showed up just after that. Hot and sour soup was good, delicious even. It had a nice mix of standard hot and sour ingredients, tofu, woods ear fungus, bamboo shoots, egg flower, etc... and the flavor was good. Not spicy at all either. My General Tso's chicken arrived quickly also... and I noted that it was actually prepared with some chilis fried in the oil as it should be. Chilis were on top of the chicken as decoration. The chicken was crispy, and delicious... all white meat. The sauce was very good too... tasted as it should. This dish should always have a little bit of heat from peppers, since it is meant to be a little spicy. It had just enough spice to be noticeable, although not spicy for my palate (I love spicy food). Some people might find it a bit spicy though. Large portion too... YUM! The crab puff were good, just cream cheese in a wonton wrapper, not sure how much actual crab there was, lol. The BBQ pork fried rice was excellent, with a fair amount of Char Sui (Chinese BBQ Pork) in it, with a nice smoky flavor. Based on this one dish... I am surprised at the negative reviews. If the reviews are based on delivery orders, that may be due to the person delivering more than the actual dish, which I suspect. Prices are very reasonable too... Chatted with the Chinese gentleman that waited on me... and he was friendly and helpful. read more

Everything I have said about Chen's is still true. I am adding this update after the recent ice emergency because once again, Chens to the rescue. Janie, front of the house staff, is always friendly and efficient and on a day when we had no power and the entire world was encapsulated in ice, she and the owners came to work and provided us with a delicious hot meal full of vegetables. As usual, there was so much we had leftovers to heat up on our Camp stove back at the house the next day. We CHG!! read more

OMG! Even bad Chinese food is generally edible. This was THE worst take out I've ever had. And I've had a lot of take out. I don't even know... There are no words to explain how bad this food was. They literally took a tiny egg roll and tried to turn it into a spring roll. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever in anything else we ordered and WTH is up with those fried shrimp? They are square??? IT was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly my tummy growled from hunger. Beloved bride was recovering from her Olympic Gold Medal at Cookie Tossing. After most every meal being on the TV tray in front of the TV -- the dining room table and the kitchen table still covered with tchatkes from Christmas -- I had to go out for a meal. Chen's Happy Garden is about a 7 minute drive from my house. They offer multi-item dinners for an affordable price! I can call for pick-up and not have to worry about dishes. I called and ordered a #5 dinner: Almond Chicken Subgum Chow Mein, Fried Shrimp, Sweet and Sour Pork, Pork Fried Rice -- $12.75. I won't endevour to comment on all the dishes. None were sub-par. None were excellent. All were nothing I would go out of my way for. But for convenience, quick service (15 minutes), LEAK PROOF PACKAGING and cost effectiveness - given the same circumstances, I'd do it all over again. Good is good. I think takeout might be the way to go. Dining in was muggy and service is so-so. So solid take out.

Ordered late before closing and still got my order out in 15 minutes, I was very satisfying with the quick service. Good crispy sweet and sour chicken and lo mein. Pork fried rice lacked a bit of flavor for me but still decent on a monday night. I'm personally not a fan of their egg rolls as the inside was a mushy blended texture, just not what I was wanting. You get a bottle for soda so you pour it yourself and after a full glass I still had abt half. the portions are accurate the egg flower soup is amazing and has amazing consistency and sooo ya! The pictures of the food on Yelp looked delicious, but so many mixed reviews. I decided to take a leap. We decided on the mandarin dinner for 2. I am glad we did. It was the perfect size, in fact there was plenty of food for left overs. The Mandarin family dinner included a Szechuan beef, Kung pao shrimp which we changed to chicken, pork fried rice, General Tso's chicken, and for the appetizers egg rolls, crab puff, and bbq pork. I was blown away with the flavors. I was expecting to get mediocre Chinese food like most places in town. All of the dishes were really good, and the egg rolls hot and crispy. I am glad i finally got to try this place. I always drove by and thought the place was always closed. Turns out its just the curtains they have in the Windows that make it look that way. This is a Great place for your classic take out style Chinese food. The food is fresh and fast. We ordered and 5 minutes later we have our soups, hot and fresh. Then 5 minutes from that, our main food started to arrive, Steaming hot and fresh. Everything was delicious. Service was great also. It was an nice balance of attentive but not too attentive. It was nice. Drinks weren't empty for long but the server wasn't constantly checking on us. It was nice we got to enjoy dinner and chat without really being interrupted. We tried this place out of desperation on Thanksgiving after a mediocre meal. We were shocked and stunned at the portion sizes and prices. It's very reminiscent of the Chinese food I remember from the 2000. Not to mention it was delicious, and they focus more on their proteins and vegetables then they seemingly do on their starches. read more

It's a cute little place in an old KFC building, and the food has been consistently good even as the name has changed a few times over 20 or so years. It's solid middle-of-the-road Chinese food, and is worth the money. Sometimes they close a little early if it's not busy, so don't wait around until the last half-hour if you want something. read more

So a update to my last review we decided to give this place one more chance since it was Sunday and basically the only place open that wasn't too far for Chinese food. The lady once again that took my order was rude and stated it would be ready in 20 minutes. When we got home it was luke warm and the Chow Mien had a gnat in. I didn't even bother to call to complain. The Pork Fried Rice was Orange I have no clue why and the fried crap puffs were like they had been fried twice. Never ever again. No thank you when leaving. I can't believe this place is still in business! We decided to call in a order to go since it wasn't to far from home. After waiting additional 20 minutes after the time they stated it would be ready we received our food. The lady ringing up the order was rather rude and seemed like she hated her job. I asked her for additional sauces which made her even more put out. Believe me I have also worked in restaurants so I get it we all have days like this. However when I got home half the order was missing. The food was over cooked and it literally made the whole house sick. The food was fantastic!!!... our first visit here a month ago, the gentleman waiter was patient and kind, helping us with our food selection. The establishment is small but super clean. The food came out hot and vegetables were fresh. We learned the owner was the chef. You can tell he takes pride in the dishes he serves. Two words: FOOD POISONING. When I pulled up to this place I was a little unsure (small little building in an ugly parking lot) but I had already ordered so I figured why not try it. I took it to my husband at work so we could have dinner together and I was pleased in the moment because I thought it tasted pretty good. But about 5 hours later I started having horrible stomach cramps and ended up in the bathroom. I threw up every bite of my dinner. I am so disgusted. Chinese food is one of my all time favorites but I think it's going to be a while before I can eat sweet & sour chicken again... We have gone to Chen's Happy Garden many times because it is close to our home, the prices are reasonable and it was good. However, the last 3 times (since they re-opened for take-out only) the food has gotten gradually worse. Our last dinner included sweet and sour pork and sweet and sour chicken. Neither entree had much meat at all, mainly soggy breading. The little bit of actual pork was too tough to chew. The pork chow main literally had noodles and bean sprouts, with very little sliced pork & celery....and no flavor. I sent our granddaughter to pick up the food & wanted to pay over the phone, but they only take payments in the restaurant. We do not plan to return until they open up inside dining & we feel safe enough to eat inside a restaurant again....then maybe. read more

We ordered food for pick up during COVID. They didn't seem particularly busy at the time (they were only doing to-go orders when we tried them, I do not know if they've semi-reopened yet). They had the seating area blocked off so you could only go in so far to pick up and pay. But no one was there when I walked in. Eventually someone came out and took my payment, but there wasn't much interaction between us for me to really review the customer service. The food was so-so, it is what I might call Americanized. We ordered the pot stickers, szechuan chicken, mongolian beef and the chicken chow mein, pan fried noodles. The pot stickers are really filled which was nice but otherwise kind of bland, and the meat seemed to me to be questionable color. The szechuan chicken was not spicy. And both my husband and I felt that our main dishes had an excessive amount of thickly diced onions. Nothing was bad, but nothing really stood out (except the onions!). Hot green tea and soup (egg drop or hot and sour) are complimentary. Lunch for 4.95 as per the sign.. Huge dinner portions... plenty for leftovers. I really like the chicken mushroom noodles. I usually order it. Served in a lovely bowl. The hot and sour soup is really quite delicious. Sometimes I change it up and try something new... Yaki Udon was ok... a little sweet. Decided to dine in with my two kids so we could eat the soup and have tea. Soup was good, some of the peas had a weird dry texture. Love getting half and half of each to mix. Food was ok. Nothing super special but not bad. The noodles in the Lo Mein were clumped together and the taste reminded me of top romen noodles. The service was good, slow at first. When Louies closed after 40 years, I thought I would never find another like it. I was wrong! Chen's Happy Garden is excellent. It is small, intimate, and always busy with folks...many Asian which is a good recommendation on its own. The prices are the best in town, service is quick, food is fresh, and the menu is varied.
