Honestly, thank god for authentic Chinese food. This is the best place you go to in Eugene for delicious handmade dumplings and noodles. Came in mid-afternoon on the weekend and the place was busy. We were seated immediately and received our food ~10 mins after ordering. We ordered the spicy and sour beef noodle soup, veggie dumplings, and scallion pancakes. There is an option to adjust the spice and numbing levels to your dishes. The food came out steaming. The veggie dumplings were flavorful and the wrapping was just thick enough to make 10-dumplings a hearty meal. The taste profile is similar to what you'd find in Northern China, and there is chili oil/vinegar/soy sauce at the table for you to make your own sauce. Scallion pancakes were deep-fried and on the thin side. They were more oily than the homemade ones I'm used to, but the crunch and flavor on them were nice. The sour and spicy beef noodle soup (opted spicy and numbing) was yummy. You can tell the noodles were handmade and they had a good bite to them. The beef was tender, the bok choy was a nice refreshing balance to the bold flavors of the dish, and the tea egg was a nice addition. The soup was quite sodium-heavy and oily, but the flavor was quite authentic and still yummy with the numbing spice kicking in towards the end. We found Jade Dumpling & Noodle House on Yelp. Kind of a combo deal since we wanted to check out Downtown Eugene afterwards. First up was parking. Right across the street was a parking lot that offered 3 hours free parking for customers. The food: House Noodle with Chopped Pork - my favorite dish. Their noodles are made in-house so the chew on them are great. Good flavors, salt level, and a ton of meat. Pork, Shrimp, & Chive Dumplings - big on filling, no skimping on shrimp. Scallion Pancakes - very thin and crispy. A bit on the greasy side but tasty. Braised Beef Noodle soup - same awesome in-house noodles with bits of beef, an egg, boy choy, and a good amount of bean sprouts. I'm used to these soups being packed with five spice and other ingredients - this one is pretty mildly flavored. Pork Xiao Long Bao - they have some soup, skin is on the thicker side and flavor was reasonable. It can serve as your XLB fix, but this was just ok. Had a road trip from LA to Seattle,I passed by this beautiful little town name Eugene today and decided to try this Chinese restaurant. It's a place that specializes in wheaten food and noodles. Looking at the menu, I noticed a wide variety of options with complex preparation methods. For example, the dough used for regular dumplings is completely different from the dough used for shrimp dumplings (har gow). Shrimp dumplings require wheat starch (cheng mian), which must be kneaded and shaped with water around 70°C (158°F) to form properly. The entire process is incredibly labor-intensive and truly tests the chef's skill level. Ambiance & Environment: You can tell this restaurant has been open for a long time, yet it remains very clean. There is a glass-enclosed prep area where you can watch the staff making the dough and noodles from scratch, which perfectly showcases their specialty. However, I was seated right next to the back door. Since customers have to use this door to access the restrooms, people were constantly walking in and out. The draft was quite strong, causing my food to cool down very quickly. I highly recommend installing a folding screen there. I also overheard other guests asking to switch seats for the same reason, so this is definitely an area management needs to work on. The Food: Since I was dining alone, I only ordered two dishes, but overall, the food deserved high praise: Griddle Cooked Beef (Gan Guo Beef): A classic Sichuan dish. The beef slices were large, the side ingredients were plentiful, and they definitely didn't skimp on the seasoning. It had a rich, robust aroma of spices that burst in your mouth. Delicious! Beef Dumplings: Easily the best dumplings I have ever had on the entire West Coast. The wrappers were thin, the filling was generous, and they were incredibly juicy--literally bursting with flavor with every bite. Highly recommended! Service: Absolutely non-existent! About five minutes after all my food arrived, while I was right in the middle of eating, a server just dropped the bill on my table. I was completely baffled. It wasn't until I pointed out that I still needed rice that they finally took the bill back. Once I finished my meal, I asked for the check. The server gave absolutely no response. Seeing a long line of people waiting outside, I proactively asked a second time because I didn't want to hold up their business. I really like Mapo Tofu... and make it at home often. But occasionally when I get lazy, I will eat it at a restaurant. First time for Mapo at Jade Dumpling, and it was good! I ordered it with Sichuan Peppercorn (apparently you have to ask for it?) and medium spice. It was excellent... more flavor than some of the other local restaurants I have tried. This is a vegetarian version, although the traditional version has ground pork in it. Portion size was great too... got two meals out of it with my takeout. Not gonna lie, Eugene, Oregon does not have the greatest food scene. When I walked by this little dumpling shop, I knew I had to give it a shot, but I was definitely nervous. My husband said the spicy pork was definitely spicy, but really delicious. The dining area is pretty small, so coming on a Wednesday around 5:30 was perfect before the crowd picked up. We could definitely see ourselves doing takeout on busier weekends because this is absolutely going on our regular pickup list. Only minor downside was that once food was served, staff really didn't check back in until bringing the bill. We wanted to try this location and was sorely disappointed. First there isn't even a hostess to take our name and inform us of a wait time. ABSOLUTELY NO ONE! Instead they provide a notepad and a handwritten sign to put your name down. In the 15 minutes we stood around waiting for some shred of customer service we witnessed one guy walk in, grab a menu then was followed by his wife. When my wife confronted this guy and his wife she stated "they had reservations". THIS PLACE DOES NOT TAKE RESERVATIONS AND THERE WAS NO ONE TO STEP IN FOR THE 6 OTHER PARTIES BEFORE THIS COUPLE that had "RESERVATIONS". Clearly they don't give a shit about their customers and STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND! It is a little bit spendy, even compared to other dumpling spots. The biggest letdown of the place is the service. Our service was pretty M.I.A. & when we did have someone helping us, it was pretty abrupt and even at times rude. Our waters didn't get refilled and it felt like they were just trying to get people in and out as fast as possible.
