Visiting from the Bay Area again, I was craving some legit Chinese food. The last time I ate here there was so enjoyable, I wanted to return to fix my craving. Despite the passage of time from my last visit, the food is still consistently good. It was nice to see and hear other patrons speaking Cantonese, it felt like home. We ordered the shrimp curry, Mongolian beef & spicy eggplant. Of the 3 dishes, our favorites were the shrimp curry and the Mongolian beef. The spicy eggplant in garlic sauce, in my opinion, overly sauced and not spicy at all, despite the spicy asterisk and least enjoyable. Overall, it was still a pleasant dining experience and it felt almost like home. I would recommend it for good Hong Kong style Chinese food. Can't go wrong! 4.5 stars for effort...........Sadly only 3.5 stars for execution........so 4 stars. Eugene has plenty of Szechuan Chinese restaurants which are very good, but authentic Cantonese style Chinese food is harder to find. Spring House attempts to make dishes that you'd find in metro areas that have chinatowns. We had 4 standard Cantonese dishes (beef chow fun, Singapore curry rice noodles, stewed beef noodle soup, & salt & pepper squid) so we could judge how "authentic" they could cook. While the components were there, besides the squid which was scrumptious, something was slightly amiss for the other dishes. The chow fun lacked the "faw hay", the Singapore noodle was too salty, and the noodles in the beef stew (good & tender) wasn't "right." It's a counter serve type place where you get your own water, utensils, etc. And the prices were fair as was the quantity of food. The staff were friendly & helpful, though don't expect a "fine dining" experience. For Eugene, this might be as close as you can get to authentic Chinatown style cooking so it's worth a try and maybe you might like it. read more

We were stoked to try this Cantonese restaurant in the U of O area. Maybe it's legit, but everything was way too salty. The beef brisket noodle soup was definitely not correct. The flavor of the meat was off and it wasn't tender. The noodle texture was not bouncy. The service was awesome, though. The guy who took my order was super friendly. No artificial orange taste like you sometimes get at other restaurants when ordering this dish. The orange tastes super natural like they used just the juice to flavor it. Huge portions. Right at the Campus of U of O! I've been mourning the loss of Spring Garden restaurant on Main at Pioneer Parkway in Springfield since the doors were closed. I wore sack cloth and ashes. I sat on the floor and wept bitter tears. Silly me, they moved to Spring HOUSE! Found this out and had to go. Parking is somewhat limited in the area, but you can buy time on the street in the convenient boxes that suck money from your credit/debit card. An hour cost me $2.00! (It's over $20.00 an hour in San Francisco, so who's complaining?) They have a great menu, and I will be returning to sample more as I can. THIS is a great place for a person dining alone. You get a very reasonable plate of very good food for a very reasonable price. I chose Creamy egg and Pork baked rice. Stupendous! Delicious! Great taste, texture and quantity. The ambience is, in a word, missing. There are a ton of pictures of the dishes on the walls. You get to serve yourself for flatware and/or chopsticks, ice water and napkins. Now go find a table and sit down. Mom and Pop who run the place speak good English, and are great hosts. The lunch menu is well done, with lots of options. Best hot-&-sour soup I've ever had, and their Szechuan options are nicely spiced with the pepper pods actually soft and edible wthout burning. Very much recommend the salt and pepper prawns and the spicy squid. In fact, all of their seafood is fresh and excellent. If you want good Chinese food, nice atmosphere, and good service... Look elsewhere. 1) This place is SUPER confusing to find if you use gps. It's on the street, but parking isn't ideal. Either you have to park on the very busy street OR park around the block behind the restaurant in a VERY sketchy parking lot. (Like, have pepper spray on hand.) 2)The service isn't great. I walked in, wasn't acknowledged or greeted at all. As a side note: There were several employees at various tables, eating. 3) It's a "seat yourself" kind of place, but I had difficulty even finding a table that was clean! It's not a big place, and there aren't very many tables, but almost all of them had dirty plates/cups on them. Apparently they take a longggg time to get around to bussing tables! (And most of the remaining few had employees sitting at them eating). It was NOT busy when I arrived. 3) The menu is okay. Not a lot of description as to what ingredients are in the dishes, but the pictures above the counter are somewhat helpful. Warning: The "number" items on the laminated menu don't exactly match up with the "number" items listed above the counter! 4)Food is meh. The fried rice was pretty dry and hard. Noodles were greasy. BBQ duck flavor was ok, but lots of bones, not much meat. Pork is nothing but fat; inedible. If you are a stereotypical college student that will eat anything- Feel free to give this place a try. If you have standards at all- Look elsewhere. 5)Restaurant cleanliness is questionable. Besides all of the un-bussed tables, the general cleanliness of the interior could use some work. Especially when you look in the kitchen and towards the back of the restaurant at all; Very cluttered and messy. Just doesn't look clean. 6)Prices are okay, not expensive. After reading the reviews I was excited to try their food... Huge disappointment. I ordered the vegetable chow Mein & crab puffs. The noodles in the chow mein were extremely overcooked, dry & bland. Sooo oily! The "vegetables" consisted of mostly cabbage and overcooked greasy onions. There was a greasy carrot or two & a couple flowerettes of broccoli, soaked in oil. It was heavy and pretty much inedible. Chow Mein should be light & fresh, this was the opposite. (This dish was $17.95! Total waste of money). The "crab" puffs were cooked well, but pretty bland and it was obvious that they use imitation Krab. The sweet & sour sauce that accompanied it was the only flavorful part of the meal; I was surprised by the fresh citrus taste. The steamed rice was cooked properly, and honestly the only part of the meal I enjoyed. This food might appeal to starving college students or drunk people coming home from the bar. But if that's the quality of their food, they should be charging much less. Maybe in a few months, I might give it another chance. read more

My go to for Southern Style Chinese food in Eugene. Many Chinese restaurants in cuisine are focused in Szechuan cuisine. Many people that I have talked to often fuse all types of Chinese food into one category but Spring House serves dishes that are much different. Spring House is great for lunch or dinner. They offer large lunch specials with their Chinese BBQ meat which is extremely fresh and tasty. Surprisingly to me, their BBQ meat is even better than any I have had in Portland. My favorite is the Roast Pork and the BBQ Pork. As for entrees, I absolutely love the Beef/Seafood Baked Rice. 1 order is around $18 but it can feed up to 3 hungry people. Every bite is satisfying and rich with flavors and textures. I highly recommend Spring House, especially the dishes I have listed above. If I ever need to "home-cooked" Chinese food in Eugene, I can go to Spring House to satisfy my cravings. read more

Amazing food!! I eat lunch from here almost every weekday, and the dishes are really tasty, authentic and wallet friendly. Their portions are huge too, so much that I usually just have the leftovers for dinner. Some of my favourite dishes are: Fujian Mei Fun, Singapore Noodles, Szechuan beef, Bbq pork fried rice, Kung Pao Chicken, House special stewed beef noodle soup. We stopped in for lunch after an appointment across the Street. We had been wanting to try it out after passing it by on our many trips to Kunfusion. I am glad we stopped. For one I was impressed with the inside. For how small it is, they really have it set up nicely, and they have comfortable chairs. I also like the pictures of the food. I usually know what most of the items are, many places make them differently. I like to see what they look like. Everything looked, and sounded amazing on the menu. It was hard to decide on what to get. There are things I am looking forward to ordering next time, and trying out. You grab your plates, and silver wear/ chopsticks here. Most of it is self serve except the drinks, and they serve you the food. I bring this up because I am rating this place a 4 star because of this. Also my personal opinion if it was a sit down where your plates, etc are brought to you the prices would be perfect. But for campus, and the self service style I think it is on the higher side. Now that being said, I really like this place and am in no way putting this place down. Just giving my rating on a star 4 out of 5 based on that. The food was great, I had the kun pao chicken. It was full of flavor. They were awesome about refilling the rice. We also had General Tsao's chicken. It was perfect! One of the best in town. The pork spring rolls were good. Our usual go to Chinese spot was closed today, so we opted to try a new place (that had pretty decent reviews, mind you): Spring House Chinese Restaurant. And as much as I hate to be negative of a local place during these hard times, especially since I know so many places are struggling, I gotta say how disappointed I was in my first experience here. . . First, the good parts: The food arrived hot and well packaged, plus nothing was forgotten or missed. Now, the not so good parts: The quantities were very small for the incredibly high price that was paid, and on that high price note, the food was just mediocre. The fried rice actually tasted a little bit stale, and the all veggie dish was basically just steamed cabbages as there were barely any other veggies (broccoli, carrots, etc.) mixed in which was a big bummer. . . Everything that was ordered was there, plus nothing was made incorrectly, so there's not really anything to be fixed. I was just very surprised at the small quantity and the meh taste of the food for the high price that was paid. This was the first time we've ever ordered from here and unfortunately, this will likely be the last time as well. read more
