I'm happy to give this place 5 stars... because in all the ways they could deserve such a rating, they did. However, if I thought the review should be based upon my particular like/dislikes, then they'd get maybe a 3.5-4 star. But c'mon. I'm not a B-hole. :) I'm not one to show up moments before a place closes and take a seat at a table--unless I ask and they are extremely happy to have me. If I see even a hint that their hospitality is only cursory, I'm out. It may just be me, but breezing in and plopping down without asking first, with anything less than 30-45 mins before closing, is kinda douchey. Yes I know that they may well be open and willing to serve me at 9:29p, if they close at 9:30. But they've got family and/or other things to get to, so I'd rather not be one more thing in a likely already long day that delays them any further. This is of course just my opinion. I don't expect everyone to agree. With that said... It was about 8:50pm when I decided I needed me some Chinese food, but all of my go-to places were moments from turning off their lights. I was left to choose from a rapidly diminishing number of options. This place was new to me, but it was already ahead of PF Chang's, on my list. Feeling adventurous... I arrived at their door around 9:05p (25 mins from closing). The place was empty. I immediately asked the lady who greeted me if she'd be willing to serve me, or if they'd prefer I came back another night. She smiled, thanked me, grabbed a menu and tea, then lead me to a table. I asked which items I could order that would be quickest and easiest for them to prepare, and was eating hot food within 10 mins. I'd say the place offered a very clean, courteous, and value filled experience. In the areas of service/flavor/quantity/cost/cleanliness/etc... I give two thumbs up!! (5 stars) The staff... whom I assume are also the owners... were exceedingly gracious. It kinda felt like I was dining with the wonderful folks at Twin Dragon, just down the road. There was never a moment that they made me feel rushed, though I hurried myself along. Where I'd dock a star or two, if I were being petty, is a matter of personal preference and not anything they could've helped. I didn't like the mar far chicken. Not at all. They served plenty of it, but it was in stark contrast to the kind I like best (at Kowloon). I like mine to be more meat and less fluff. These were pretty much the exact opposite. Also, the egg flower soup was a bit different than I like. I also ordered hot & sour soup, which I found to be very very good. All the food was good! But there were just those two examples of things I like done a bit differently--which again, isn't their problem. I have only praise for the folks at Chen's. And I'm happy to have tried them out. While we may not like certain items at every place we dine, it's more a reflection of our individual tastes than a mark against the establishment itself. ER MAH GER! This is seriously my favorite take out Chinese food in Eugene. Sadly its so far away from springtucky I can't always justify driving out here. Prices are relatively cheap for the Eugene area and the portions are of good value. I had 2 different servers here. 1 looked like a family member with her child in the back watching tv and was spectacular. Another, the Caucasian lady was horrible, texting and standing around when people were ready for service....Lazy. I hope my tip didn't go to the latter! I will say though this is American Chinese at its finest, the way it should be, a heaping pile of rice and fried chicken covered in sugary sweet goodness doused with orange extract and food coloring. We've been here 3 times now, partly because we had a restaurant.com coupon, and partly because we enjoyed the food on our first visit. On our first visit we got the Cantonese Dinner for 2 people. Such a huge amount of food! Besides the General Tso being way too sweet, we both thought the food tasted pretty good, and was a great value. On our second visit I ordered one of the specials - sweet and sour ribs. It was disgustingly sweet. Now I realize my tastes are closer to the average European than American, but even my girlfriend, who grew up on Americana food thought it was disgustingly sweet. If you actually like food this sweet, you're probably at risk for diabetes, if you don't have it already. On our most recent trip, we got the Mandarin Dinner for 2 people, with Mongolian Beef substituted for Szechuan Chicken. Like our first visit, the General Tso's Chicken was way too sweet. The Mongolian Beef was also sweeter than I would have preferred, but not disgustingly so. When our waiter asked how everything was, and I told her I thought the chicken was too sweet, she had this kind of sad look on her face like she agreed with me but said that's how the people in this town like it. Between our three visits, everything was very consistent. The place is super clean, wait times are short, service was super friendly, and the flavors are very catered to unsophisticated Americana tastes. Reflecting back, I think it's telling I've never seen an Asian person eating here, nor have I even seen anyone eating here with chopsticks. In a way, I think rating this restaurant shows an inherent flaw in a simple 1-5 star system. For those who like Midwestern style Chinese American food, I would give this place 5 stars. But based on my own tastes, or if you're looking for more authentic Chinese flavors, I think the food is 2 stars with the service and price bumping it up to 3. One more thing I almost forgot. The music here is pretty bad. It sounded like smooth jazz versions of classic rock songs. Please don't make me listen to Kenny G playing Hotel California while I eat. read more

The Good: Delicious food with huge portions. Wife and I had the Mandarin Dinner for two. We had about 2 boxes of food leftover from it afterwards. BBQ pork was spot on, egg rolls and rangoons were good as well. The egg flower soup was of the thick cornstarchy variety, and full of veggies and plenty of white pepper. General Tso's chicken is possibly the best I've had anywhere. The chicken was the standard deep fried variety, but the batter was perfectly crispy and chicken was not greasy or stringy like some other places. The fried rice was good too, not too much oil like other places I've been to. The Bad: There's almost too much variety. 5 pages of dishes, plus 2 pages of combination specials. Didn't have the patience to read the whole thing. Poor guy serving us was a bit rushed when 4/8 tables were filled, but he did an admirable job. The Ugly: The exterior is just plain awful. Stuck between a Wendy's and payday loan place, it really looks just like a bigtop tent. The Rundown: Cheap and delicious food. Basically a 3 course meal for $12.50 a person. The clerk/owner at the establishment seems very nice and the food is very affordable, but it's really cheap Chinese-American food that is not tasty. Maybe I'm spoiled or used to eating better Chinese food because I'm Asian, but the ingredients did not seem very fresh and the flavor was lacking. They appear to use the same mix of onions, celery, zucchini, etc. on the stir fry orders and most of the veggies were onions - sautéed so much that they were flavorless. Even if it's not for me, you might love it. It's good for really fast, cheap (took 15 min) Americanized Chinese food. My husband and I ordered the Mandarin Dinner, which comes with 3 appetizers and 4 entrees - all for just $25. You really can't beat that deal in terms of price. read more

I've been here multiple times and in general like the food. I consider myself a regular. The women who works there is often cold but I usually dismiss it as we've all got our thing. I figured I'd buy from the restaurant to help through the pandemic. I asked if I could pay by phone and they just bring it to my car as I just had ankle surgery an could only use one leg (which is pretty exhausted at this point). The women said no. I'm done with this place! The woman who runs it is so rude I can't believe they're still in business! My lil guy and I went in last night and placed a $40 order to-go. Since the meals I ordered usually comes with a few bowls of egg flower soup, I asked if my lil guy could please have a bowl while we waited 30 minutes for our food to be prepared since he was very hungry. She, almost angrily, said, "NO! To-go orders don't get soup!". Ridiculous! Then why is it the same cost? Then when our food was ready, she handed me the bag with about 20 staples in it so I couldn't check it. I asked if there was mustard and sweet and sour sauce in there. She said, "Your order doesn't come with sweet and sour sauce!". There's bottles of it on the table when you dine in but if you take out you can't have sweet and sour sauce?! Plus, there was hardly any chicken in the fried rice and garlic chicken. She is just plain rude, stingy, and a very poor hostess, server and business owner. I always order the Cantonese Family Style dinner to go. The whole family is happy with the offerings and we can usually eat it for a few meals as serving size is generous. They are usually quite fast at getting the order out, but have been busy the last couple times I've stopped. So be prepared to wait if they are busy. Not super great. The sesame chicken is served with the sauce on the side (not what I'm used to) and the breaded chicken they provide was a little tough. The chow mein had very few noodles and was just super saucy with bland flavor. Large portions and cheap but not sure we'll be back. This is our go to Chinese place always. Potstickers are amazing as well as their egg foo young. Their BBQ pork is the most juiciest around which while they were recently closed due to the pandemic we tried many other Chinese places only to be disappointed over and over. read more

Food was good, but I think i know why most people get it to go there. The waitress was rude, my friend said she was rude to her before too, definitely not a happy person. The Chicken Hawaiian had good sauce, but you had to dig to find some chicken pieces. Egg flower soup was good. The new owners have turned this place around! It used to be fairly dirty. I could always count on a fly in my soup. And the customer service- yikes! Today- Super clean. The host/waiter and I'm guessing manager, is wonderful! The food is so delicious, the portions are gut busting, and the prices are amazing! I love the beef and broccoli. It's so fresh and has a wonderful garlic flavor. The mar far chicken is made with chicken breasts and the breading is light. The sweet and sour sauce.... YUMMO! I ordered the Szechuan Chicken to go. I wanted it extra spicy and they accommodated my request. They stated that they use habeneros to do this. When I arrived to pick it up the Lady working up front seemed happy and was very nice. I paid for my food and waited a few minutes for my order to be done. When I opened it up it smelled wonderful and looked fantastic. The only problem was they made beef Szechuan instead of chicken. I was still very good. I have eaten there twice and for some reason liked the first time better than the second. It just seemed the food was fresher the first time or I was just hungrier. But it was still good the second time. As usual, you know the portions are going to be huge when you see the fork lift in the corner and your silverware includes a shovel. But seriously, the quantity was good for those whose first want to know how much you get when evaluating a restaurant. The last time I was there I had #4 which includes Almond Chicken Subgum Chow Mein, Pork Fried Rice, Fried Shrimp and Mar Far Chicken. You can get Sweet and Sour Soup instead of Egg Flower for no additional charge. The Almond Chicken was fresh and includes pan fried noodles instead of those crispy fried things that turn into gooey worms in the take home box (I always eat all I can see so this does not happen). So I prefer the pan fried noodles. Other places you pay extra for pan fried noodles. The Pork Fried Rice is good. The Shrimp was good but not especially large. Instead they are those long sticks. The soup was acceptable. I love Mar Far Chicken but have to say they use a lower quality chicken that is white meat and dark meat. This is standard for all such restaurants except Kawloons, which has the best Mar Far I have ever had. I think it is handmade, but most Chinese places probably used a frozen version. FYI: Kawloon's Mar Far is $2 more a plate. As usual, I forgot to ask for the red sauce on the side, so you get as much as they think you need and when that gets home as a leftover it's turned the breading into a soggy sweet sponge. So ask for the sauce on the side. The shining star is the person who waited on me. Perfect service. Not too much in your face but there when you need them. She even sat me so I could keep an eye on my bike. This place really tries hard and I hope they make it. read more

Just went to dinner with the boyfran, and came back with a new favorite Chinese restaurant. This was honestly the best experience I've had a Chinese restaurant for all of the following: Food, value, cleanliness, and service. The two of us ordered the Mandarin dinner (Which consists of soup, an appetizer plate, and 4 different entrees), and I was surprised to find that every dish was delicious. The entrees we had were: Pork fried rice- It looked dry on the plate, but was actually packed full of flavor. After trying it I actually really appreciate that it was more dry than oily, like at other restaurants where eating it lubricates your lips in oil. General Tso's- Probably the best I've had. It was very crispy without being over-battered. The texture makes me think that they double fry it; not a bad thing. The sauce was over sweet for my taste, but it was very flavorful. Mongolian Beef- They probably grilled 3 whole onions for just this plate, which I don't mind a bit. The beef in the plate was really tender, with a much better balance of sweetness than our friend General Tso. I really liked this plate. Kung Pao Shrimp- A generous mix of veggies with crunchy shrimp. My boyfriend was particularly happy with the amount of water chestnuts in this dish. I was really glad that this plate wasn't smothered in a sauce, so our meal had a fresh tasting element among all the richness. Just like it sounds, this is a ton of food. I'm pretty sure this deal could have fed a family of 4 and they would still take a box home. We managed to fit all our left overs in only 3 boxes! for 12.50 a person, we brought home enough food to feed us for the next 2 days. The atmosphere of Chen's is very casual. Not a whole lot of decoration, but you'd have to be a dick to take a star away for that. Though eating in wasn't anything special, I did take note of how clean the restaurant was. Our table was spotless and I couldn't find a thing on the carpet floor. Compared to the service I've experienced at other Chinese locations, Chen's was by far the best. There's not a whole of seats inside. All the tables were waited on by a really nice girl, never failing to let us be dry of water for more than a minute. She refilled our drinks at least 4 times and was very pleasant to work with. We didn't wait long at all for our food either. This is by far one of the best Chinese places I've found around town. I wasn't sure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised with all the food. Quality meats and veggies. Sauces were great tasting. Nothing was over cooked. The breading on their General Tso's Chicken was light and crispy; not greasy at all. Kung Pao Shrimp was awesome! BBQ Pork was great as expected. Really over all I was very pleasantly surprised and came out very very full. The portion sizes were huge and I had plenty left over to last another meal or two. What a surprise. Unabashed Chinese-American is generally way down my list, usually bad recipes poorly done. But this was really good, almost perfect in its way. Look, egg foo young or General Tso's chicken are never gonna be gourmet. But here the "American classics" are done so well it's worth trying them just to see what the idea was in the first place, what made these (generally crappy) dishes become part of the canon. So we popped in for lunch, after reading James' review. Both soups (egg drop, hot & sour) - good to very good, the hot & sour not quite rich enough to be great. sCrab wontons - crispy, hot, crunchy, melting cream cheese, extra sweet pink sauce from the ketchup bottle. For the first time, understood why you'd even bother with such a weird, usually poorly done dish. Mains were "Happy Family" (four meats, veggies, brown sauce) and (especially) Gen'l Tso's chicken. Both about as well prepared as I've ever had, even tho there's only so much you can do with the basic recipe. And cheap! And big portions! And clean, and a little less divey than you'd think from the outside. Very good for what it is, we'll be back. read more

We have driven past this place so many times but never stopped. It always looked kind of shabby but after reading other reviews here about it we decided to give it a try. We may have a new favorite. I had the coconut chicken. There was enough for three people. The sauce was delicious but the chicken was just slightly overcooked and hard. The waitress tonight, Elaine, knew how much service to give to make you feel like you were appreciated as a customer without going overboard. I had the "house special" -- chow mein, sweet & sour pork, pork fried rice. bar-b-que pork and fried shrimp. The egg-flower soup appetizer was excellent -- warning: the pepper shaker has white pepper, not black pepper in it... don't overload the soup! The bar-b-qued pork was a surprise... moist and flavorful! I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with the usual dried out pork you get at every other Chinese restaurant! The pork-fried rice was very flavorful, though I didn't see much pork in it. I'm really not a fan of Kikkoman brand soy sauce, but not even it could spoil this dinner!
