This is by far the worst service I've ever had, the waitress literally started vacuuming while we were deciding what we wanted. She was very impatient and was just staring at us while I was trying to put my card down to pay. It was creepy. The food was trash. We got a combo that said chow mien but instead received soggy lo mien. I got egg foo young that tasted like sweaty gym sock. We really like the food, love the sauces and the ginger beef is good. However, the waitress can be quite rude even though we are regulars - so we tried take out, they charge for the sauce that would come with your done in and will no longer give you soup even with your own container. read more

So my wife goes here to buy food for 12 people. After she pays for the large order she asked if she could have some hot tea while she waited. She was informed that it was almost the dinner hour and she would have to return in a half hour so none of the tables would be tied up. The place was not full when she ordered and not full when she came back to pick up the food. The order was more than what 2 tables would order during a dinner hour. Would 30 minutes and some tea been that hard to provide? read more

Just OK - not great but won't give you food poisoning either. Not worth the 5 star ratings that others have given. The only difference between the General Tso's and the Sweet and Sour Chicken was the cause. Not cool Chen... The waitress seemed a bit annoyed that we interrupted her phone time. I just came into Eugene for the first time and doing a laundry next to Chen restaurant. Ordered a Generals Tsao chicken to go by name. The female Cantonese waitress starts admonishing me I should have ordered the dinner combo by number. I pay in cash because I have lots change from driving Cross country and again the waitress makes an insulting sound under her breath as if. Waiting until I get my food before posting this as I have a feeling she will "make a special won Tom soup" if she reads my review before getting food. read more

I finally decided to try it. The food was so-so. My order was to go the Mongolian Beef was mainly onions with very little meat. Our pork fried rice, was fried rice with 2 slices of bbq pork on top. The sweet and sour chicken was okay. Our order was to go, I worked in food & beverage for over 35 years. I usually tip on to go orders as well as being served. The service kinda sucked, I asked for extra hot mustard twice. The order was all stapled and she told me it was all there. 2 tiny containers of hot mustard. Gross. Customer service is lacking, the waitress has zero social skills. I ordered shrimp egg rolls, Kung Pao Delight, Orange chicken & Mongolian Beef. And it was all disgusting. The Mongolian beef is tolerable. The orange chicken was lacking flavor and tasted more like lemon or citrus chicken and even that is saying a lot. The Kung pao whatever was mostly peanuts and celery which tasted blah. The egg rolls are gross gross gross, jack in the box beats these eggs rolls by far. The hot and sour soup I got w dinner was weird and also lacked a distinct flavor. More like soy sauce was used to bulk up egg flower soup and they call it hot and sour. When we asked for more white rice she said "this extra charge" In her thick Chinese accent with no expression on her face. I guess charge me more for the rice...whatever. I'm never going back here again. Hawaiian Time is across the street and I should've just gone there like usual. read more

I'm enthusiastically eating my Happy Family leftovers from yesterday's lunch for lunch today, so it seemed like a good time to leave a review. To start off: don't let the outside of the building put you off. I was wondering what I'd gotten my husband, my 8-year-old, and myself into when we pulled up--the building is a former KFC (oddly, these often seem to often get converted into Chinese restaurants), and there aren't a lot of windows. Once we got inside, though, I relaxed--it's clean, neat, and pretty nicely remodeled. Yes, the lady who serves as the host/waiter is quiet and doesn't interact excessively. Why is this a problem? Not everyone is friendly and outgoing; just be polite in return, and you'll be fine. We ordered lunch specials--beef with broccoli, Happy Family, and the "pick 3" with lo mein, Mar Far chicken, and fried rice--which came with tea, soup, and crab puffs (aka Crab Rangoon). The tea and soup came out very promptly; we got egg flower soup, which was the sort of egg flower soup you'd expect from a basic Chinese-American restaurant. I was a little disappointed that most of the veggies were a standard freezer veg mix, but it wasn't a problem; the broth and egg were good, and there were little "extras" like slices of water chestnut and bamboo shoots. Then our entrees arrived, and we were thrilled, quite seriously. The entrees were excellent. The Mar Far chicken was, well, Mar Far chicken (there's only so much to be done with a dish that was invented in Medford), but it was fresh and crispy, and my husband was really please with the high levels of veggies in his lo mein. My son (beef with broccoli) and I (Happy Family) both *loved* our dishes. First, having crab puffs as a side just makes me happy, as I love the things, so that got me in a good mood from the first. The meat and veggies themselves, though, were honestly outstanding for an everyday Chinese-American restaurant; I was not expecting the quality for the price. The sauce is good--not too strong, not too weak, a nice balance of savory with just a little sweetness--and mix of meat and vegetable was really balanced, about 1:2 ratio in both dishes. The veggies in the entrees really made up for my mild disappointment in the soup, as the entree veggies were fresh and cooked well. The portions were also huge; my son and I took home a little more than half of each of our entrees, and all three of us (including my husband, who finished his lunch yesterday) are having re-heated food for lunch today. I work in the same parking lot as Chen's Happy Garden, so I have eaten here a few times now. As far as prices and convenience I would rate this restaurant five stars, but their customer service is HORRIBLE to say the least. The past 2 times I have ordered food to go it has taken WAY longer than I was told over the phone. I am a huge fan of hot n sour soup. I will admit, their hot n sour is pretty tasty but not worth the amount of rudeness and nonprofessional behavior I have experienced my last 3 times in. The woman working the front counter is cold, and always seems like she is in a huge hurry (even though every time I have been in, I am the only one there). Tonight I asked my fiancee to pick me up some soup and bring it to my work. Their soup is priced at $1.75 for a cup. When he pulled out his debit card (the only form of payment he had), she yelled at him about not having any cash, then stormed into the back and stood there complaining to the cook and pointing right at him through the window. Being someone that was brought up to have respect to others, and working customer service I always make a point to say please, thank you and have a nice day. I expect the same in return from a somewhere that has gotten my business numerous times. I definitely will NOT be going back to that restaurant, which is unfortunate because of how reasonably priced they are and the convenience to my place of work. read more

This is first Chinese food I went to when I moved to Eugene a year ago. I love the crab puffs and the beef Kung Pao. The General Tso was ok, but it had a different sauce than I am used to. The food was edible but the only dish that we would order again was the pot stickers. The service was adequate but not friendly. The first time I went there I ordered two meals that came with soup. I had two reasons for this. I wanted both soups and intended to take my leftovers home for another meal later. She was rude when she told me I could only get one soup. I ordered two meals so I felt I should be able to have what I paid for. After much argument she finally relented. But the experience left me disappointed. My family wanted to try this place so I figured I would give them another try. The same server was just as unfriendly and again was rude about us asking for the house pot sticker sauce instead of the inferior packets. We ordered $75 worth of food but I left a penny tip. My granddaughter left $5 against my wishes. I waitressed for 13 years and I have never treated anyone like that. I have never felt motivated to give a negative review ever. Been eating from this building for about 15 years now. WOW, what a change for the better when they changed hands recently. The daily lunch specials are good quality , I have never been disappointed. I have been dragging my feet to spend the 11.00 for the Singapore noodles that I love. I am still eating them hot and fresh as I am writing this. Best I have ever had. Lots of fresh veggies and a large amount as well. They keep serving me food that is not really much different than other places, just done a little better. read more
