Patty Melt and Fries
Gary G.

PATTY MELT REVIEW Iconic diner on the edge of Chinatown, a couple blocks east of the Expressway. It's been around for decades and it's open 24/7. More of an authentic this-place-has-aged feel than the typical diner attempt to evoke an earlier era. Went in the morning and went for a patty melt-- because I could. It's too elusive these days, so being able to not only find one but have it at breakfast, a double win. Double patty is standard, not an add-on, and fries (probably frozen, but lengthy, crisp and fluffy) are included. No onions, no rye, but lettuce and tomato-- a non-traditional configuration. Nicely browned patties that had juiciness. The ingredients weren't anything to write home about, but the execution was great all around and so was the cheerful service from a seasoned veteran. Sure, I've had better with the proper rye, griddled onions, and higher quality beef, but an easy 4 stars for the execution, value, vibe, and being able to even order a patty melt before 10 in the morning. Bonus points for a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle that was slightly warm. Breakfast items (eggs, crispy home fries, and pancakes) on a neighboring table looked good.

OMG! We went there for the first time this morning for breakfast and I was just BLOWN away! First off the female chef, Juliana and her female cohort, server, Maria I think it was, we're SO hysterically funny together. THEN the food!!!! I had the Chocolate Fantasy stuffed French toast with peanut butter!!!!!! Would go back IN A Minute!!!

If you're in Boston, don't miss South Street Diner! Shannon (******) made the experience exceptional with her warm smile, attentive service, and genuine hospitality. She alone is worth the visit. The Maple Pepper Chicken Benedict was diner food at its absolute best, flavorful, perfectly cooked, and unforgettable. Great food, great service, and a true Boston gem. Highly recommend!

My hotel recommended The South Street Diner in Boston for breakfast; the food at the hotel was less than average. I made the quarter of a mile walk and it was worth the walk. I was greeted by Shannon who brought me water and juice and took my order. The breakfast special I ordered and she responded, "Baby, are you going to eat all of it?" I had to get a to go container. The food was wonderful! The people, amazing! I thought I was at the UN working again. I had an amazing experience!

Met by friendly greeters at the door who escorted us to the bar to be seated. Tables are reserved for 3 or more guests and since it was just my husband and I we sat at the bar. We didnt mind. Our sever, Marie was extremely attentive and nice. South Street Diner is a small but not too small venue which serves breakfast all day. With my meal, I chose a mimosa, not just the regular prosecco and orange juice, but an apple pie mimosa made with swirls of caramel and topped with cinnamon. It was good. The food came out fast, portions were huge to where I could not eat it all, and it was delicious. I'm sure if in Boston again, I'll return.

Awesome old school diner. Good fill you up comfort food. Ambiance is exactly what you'd expect in a spot like this. Service is on point. All said and done excellent meal.

No wait and the food was great. Had the smoked salmon Benedict, kids had soda floats banana and chocolate chip pancakes and got a cheeseburger to go for my pops. Everyone loved everything, moving south I definitely miss true up north diners with great food like this one!! Everyone was A1!! A much needed true diner experience

6/27/26, 1135am - should be negative stars - DON'T WALK AWAY, RUN AWAY. Business owner who was working l as a door greeter hates working at his diner and I was probably an easy target for him because I didn't look like a drunk and high - grungy south bostonian, was alone and waiting for friends who invited me to that diner, to arrive. Got into a loud argument with me in the diner(and out of the diner later, when a friend arrived) called me a nuisance and other names, for asking for a table while I was sitting by the bar having coffee while waiting for my friends. I kept asking how i was a nuisance first from the 3 waiters(who said I'm not) then to him and he kept telling me to "fuck off" and "not to tell him" how to run his business - yes, nothing was making sense that are coming out of his mouth - even trying to make me fight him, even called-yelled repeatedly (7x) for the nearby BOSTO POLICE to come (he just looked at him from a distance), and told me to get out of Boston (I moved here 8 yrs ago, military stuff).I told him I am a veteran and I can be here in Boston if I want to. Nearby people -guy across the street, the guy standing next to the diner, and the 2 customer ladies sitting outside all said for me to let it go and he's not worth it. Thank you. Kudos to the waiters and waitresses who seem to be stressed out working there, now I know why.

Terry is the man from we walk in and sat down to taking our order to making sure the food was good to leaving he was there to make sure everything was good.

Being 100% not worth the hype it was ok at best. Had big breakfast with a breakfast burrito and Boston cream pie pancakes. Place was a little crowded with stuff everywhere. Our waitress the girl with the tattoo on her neck was in a rush and not helpful with question and not very attentive to our table and no she wasn't busy it was only us and another table with people. overall it was ok.

Online Meat Lover Omelet. Was just meh if it wasn't for the tapatío I EDC.

All due respect, service was bad. Food was average. Ambience is very very dark and cramped. Stupid chat GPT suggestion. But try it yourself. Everyone has different tastes. My HBP and LdL left sad. Arteries wanted more of a workout.

What an AMAZING experience. We were visiting Boston for a couple of days and had this in my list to try and couldn't be more happy. We ended up eating here twice not only due to the food but the service as well. Our servicer was super attentive and helped us with the menu. we ended up talking to the manager and she remembered us the next day. She even recommended a few other spots in the area. The diner is small with few booths and the bar area but it moves pretty quickly, food comes out quick and the food itself was great!

Great service with good food. We had breakfast with the family here and it was delicious. Your typical breakfast food with all that you expect from a good greasy spoon. I would eat here again for sure, the place has an old dinner feel with small booths and counter seating.

The service was incredibly efficient, the food was amazing, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. We arrived just as the restaurant was opening and were surprised to see how busy it already was at 7:00 a.m.! The café had a charming, distinctly French atmosphere, reminiscent of cafés we've visited in France, right down to hearing patrons chatting in French. It certainly added to the ambiance! Since we arrived early, we were seated immediately at a cute window table, perfect for watching the city come to life. Over the next few days, we walked past several times and noticed people lining up for tables, so we were especially glad we had beaten the crowds. The service was excellent from start to finish. Our waiter was attentive and efficient, bringing water promptly, taking our order quickly, and delivering our food in what felt like no time at all. We ordered lattes, French toast, and a Croque Madame. The French toast came topped with fresh blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and banana slices. While it was a satisfying breakfast, the dish itself was fairly ordinary. I would have preferred brioche-style French toast for a richer texture, and the maple syrup was already poured over the top. Having it served on the side would have been a nice touch, allowing guests to control the amount. I also wasn't entirely sure the syrup was pure maple syrup. The Croque Madame was enjoyable as well, though neither dish was particularly memorable. Overall, Café Bonjour is a great spot for its convenient location, charming French café atmosphere, and friendly, efficient service. While the food was good enough for breakfast, it wasn't necessarily the highlight of our visit. I would come back again to try their pastries, or crêpes. I'd recommend arriving early to avoid the lines and enjoy a relaxed start to your day exploring Boston!

Afterward, she treated me to brunch at North Street Grille, and honestly, it was exactly what I needed. When we arrived, there was a line and we were told the wait could be around 45 minutes. Don't let that scare you off. We put our name down, walked around the neighborhood, took some cute pictures of each other and passed the time until Robin received a text letting us know our table was coming up. I'd say we actually waited closer to 20-30 minutes max. As someone who deals with anxiety, I'll admit that when I first saw how busy it was, I was a little nervous about going inside. But once we got settled, that feeling went away. The atmosphere was welcoming, lively and easygoing. There was plenty of conversation and background noise, but funny enough, that was exactly the kind of noise I needed that day. I didn't feel like all eyes were on me. I could just sit down, decompress, enjoy my food and enjoy being with my best friend. And once you're inside, I can completely understand the wait. It's a smaller spot, people are eating, drinking, talking and genuinely enjoying themselves. It doesn't feel like somewhere you want to rush out of and with the food being as good as it was, I understand the line too. Now let's get to the food. That complimentary banana bread? Don't sleep on it. I really enjoyed it. We also had mimosas, which were good and definitely fit the occasion. I ordered the Steak Bomb Omelet with steak, peppers and cheese, along with home fries and toast. Robin had the salmon omelet, and of course I had to taste hers too--it was good! Our waiter was attentive and really nice throughout the meal, which made the experience even better. And speaking of Robin what are the chances I'm sitting there with my best friend Robin, open the menu and see a Robin Special? Shoutout to all the Robins! There were so many other things on the menu that caught my eye that I already know one visit isn't enough. And apparently the restaurant knew when it was time for me to go, because right on cue, I dropped my mimosa glass. I was immediately embarrassed, but shoutout to our waiter because he didn't make a big deal out of it or make me feel uncomfortable. And remember all that background noise I mentioned? For once, I was grateful for it because hardly anybody even noticed. Between coming straight from family court, having my best friend there, the food, the atmosphere and even my little mimosa-glass finale, this brunch ended up being exactly what I needed. Would I come back? Definitely. Next time I'm trying something completely different from the menu, with them delicious-ass banana bread bites.

Not bad by any means, but nothing particularly special compared to what I was expecting. The French toast, however, was amazing! We also tried the burrata caprese toast, which was actually suggested by our server, and it ended up being such a pleasant surprise! It was absolutely delicious and easily my favorite dish of the entire meal. I probably wouldn't have thought to order it myself, so I'm really glad our server recommended it! Overall, the food was good, with a few dishes that really stood out. While the pancakes didn't quite live up to the hype for me, the French toast and especially the burrata caprese toast more than made up for it.
