So the beginning was a bit rough, but overall, it was a 5 star experience. Stopped by here to have breakfast before my surgery, and we had to sit upstairs because the bottom was full. We get up there, and immediately order our coffee, I order mine with milk, and wifey orders the decaf. They brought us up our coffee, but forgot the milk, for a full 10 minutes, they didn't bring up the milk, until I asked again, and they brought it. We were ready to order, as we were on a super tight time crunch, we ordered, and the food came about 20 minutes later. Food was delicious, wish it was more plentiful, but overall was filling. Needed something easily digestible, like soup. Tried out this place, got a turkey cream soup, coffee, and the eggs benedict. The soup was pretty good, pretty much the insides of a turkey pot pie. Needed pepper. The coffee tasted burnt and/or could also have been the last of the brew...especially if they let it sit there all day. The eggs benedict was horrible. Basically biscuits and gravy with over cooked poached eggs. The ham wasnt a slice of actual ham but layers of sandwich meat. It was ironic because i wanted my home fries extra crispy and it came out undercooked! For $13 that was a ripoff so luckily they voided it and let me order something else of the same price. I ended up ordering the club sandwich. This time they used actual turkey instead of sandwich meat, however the turkey was VERY dry. Good old fashioned food & service. This spot has a grandparent-ish kinda vibe. It gets packed during breakfast (on weekends) + packed during lunch (on weekdays). Their omelette and club sandwich are my fav picks. The staff is polite, friendly and always ready with your coffee refill (no joke~our cups were NOT empty entire time we were there!). Soup Shoppe should really be named Soup, Turkey and Pie Shoppe. This is The Go To Spot for anything you read in my revised name, but with just one problem. The most amazing turkey lunch is a Thursday Special. Only. Every Thursday they roast a turkey, or two, or three. The locals know that Turkey Thursday is always honest and reliable. The Special costs $8.25 and comes with a cup of homemade soup or salad, real mashed potatoes (with certifiably genuine potato lumps) and gravy, and a finishing touch of chunky cranberry sauce. The huge platter of moist, hot, white and dark meat turkey lays on a bread base, piled high, then smothered in a very satisfying homemade gravy. Very impressive, especially since you can expect to have an abundance of leftovers. It tastes as good as Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma's house. But then they close their doors at 3 pm. But if you missed it, or are having withdrawals, the most wonderful Cream of Turkey soup is on the menu the next day, Friday, until they run out. They don't skimp on the meat. It is just as good, just re-purposed. If you want to keep in the Midwestern "Grandma's House" frame of mind, there is always a list of homemade pies and cakes that cannot be ignored. We have tried the Coconut Cream, Chocolate Cream, Blackberry, German Chocolate pies, and the Pumpkin Pie Cake (a nutmeg-y holiday treat, with candied nuts and a pumpkin pie consistency with a nice whipped cream finish) and chocolate cake. My least favorite was a Lemon Meringue pie that was simply too sweet. The rest were worthy of the indulgence, $4 for a healthy slice. Not Thursday? If you are craving a quiche, look no further. If you are looking for a decent but conventional breakfast, this is your spot. The rest of the menu, I can take it or leave it. But luv, luv, luv anything turkey or soupy. One warning! You must climb stairs to use their funky little bathrooms. Not sure how that works with current ADA requirements, but that *is* how it is. Truly, this place has been our family favorite for quite a long time. Nothing fancy here. Run by hard working, ordinary people who got sucked into a 1970's time warp. We like it. We keep coming back. We ordered a quiche 3 days before pickup. An hour before pickup, we get a call stating that they only had two pieces of the WHOLE quiche we ordered. We went in to get an explanation, and the explanation was super stupid. This is no exaggeration, I can't make any of this up. Honestly, it's enough for us to never be patrons of this establishment again. And the reason is because this experience would forever leave a terrible taste in our mouths. This is one of those adorably cute spots that you just don't bring your LA judgement/hyper-critical alter ego to. Come here knowing this is a local favorite and an old fashioned diner. I loved all of the locals that venture here. There is such a friendly atmosphere here and the food (not judging like I typically do of LA spots) was good. I thoroughly enjoyed my Chicken Fried Steak and eggs. The gravy was creamy and perfectly paired with the steak. I could barely walk out of the diner after the large portions of my breakfast. My fiance enjoyed their Breakfast Sandwich with sausage. This came as sandwich rather than the expected croissant or another soft bread. The sandwich overall was good, he may try another breakfast item on our second trip over. Service was simply incredible, we had the lovely waitress that just made us feel we were in her own home kitchen. For my fellow LA people, this is a cozy diner with only the best of company. Honestly, walking into the Soup Shoppe made me feel like I was cheating on The Little Green Onion across the parking lot. I've been seeing LGO for well over 10 years, and the only time I had been in the Soup Shoppe during that time was when they used to provide pregame meals for my high school football team over a decade ago and I hate to sound mean but what they fed us didn't impress teenage me. So fast forward 13 some odd years, my wife suggests that we go to the Soup Shoppe. It felt weird to agree with her, but most guys will understand this rule: If your wife actually picks where she wants to eat you don't question it, you just thank the sweet baby Jesus, agree with her and go before she changes her mind, LOL! We walked into Soup Shoppe and it looked exactly like I had remembered it form over a decade ago. This time it felt more comfy and intimate with my wife than it did with 3 dozen teenage boys. It reminded me of a little country style cafe in my wife's hometown, and I liked it immediately. It took me a while to review the menu and after a couple questions, I settled on the Country Benedict which, to my absolute surprise, was amazing! I'm sure other places offer a similar dish since Eggs Benedict became a brunch staple years ago but, as a rule, I never order them and I rarely even look at that section of the menu. Something spoke to me from that menu and told me I needed to eat these though, and I am sure glad I did! I also opted for the country potatoes instead of my my usual go to hash browns, and this was an excellent decision as well. In the end I didn't feel too bad for picking the Soup Shoppe over Little Green Onion that day. I realize now that they both specialize in different styles of breakfast, and that one just caters to a different taste than the other. I am pretty happy that I gave this place another try. So me and my fiancé went in to eat today and it was my first time with the new owners. All I can say is it is super delicious super comfortable super family feeling and I would definitely recommend anyone come here and enjoy a meal. The savory crepes make you wanna slap your mama!
