I'm sorry I wish I could give a better star rate. This was our first time going there. We sat at the bar. We were actually waiting for two friends. Well the service there is not good at all, was it our luck or not, who knows. The bartender was very snappy, and not even offer food or waters. We asked for two beers. I was asked for a blonde and my husband for hazy. She turned around and grab the beers. When she brought the beers she asked with OUT looking at us and said want to open a tab or closed out.? We said no close please, then, I pull out my $100 bill and give her the cash. She took it and walked away. Took a while for her to bring the change. When she finally did she just gave me the change with our a receipt. And walked away. I waited and said can I have my receipt and said sure. She came back and gave me the receipt which had no itemize items. Is this how this place operates with receipts ? We waited for her to ask for water nothing never came back. We had to ask water to one of the servers outside the bar to give us water. Which she was very nice to give us. The bartender never came to check on us or ever the other two customers next to us, or the one next to me. What a bad service this place has to what they claim to offer. Ambiance is nice and elegant yes but Spanish music and bad service bad quality. We will never come back. Did I Tip? Nope why should I ? I don't tip bad service or bad attitude. Service is acceptable, the host at the front was not attentive. We ended up at the bar. Ambiance is that of a typical higher end bar, wooden floors, ample seating. The drinks are generous pours, but the food lacked depth of flavor and adequate seasoning. I had the truffle burger, but I could not taste or smell truffles which have a very distinct aroma and taste the chips are overcooked, almost burnt. Good took longer than anticipated. The party I was apart of were already seated so when I walked in, I informed the hostess and she showed me where to sit! I met a friend here for lunch. The restaurant doesn't have its own lot but I had no problem finding parking on the street and paid for 2 hours at the meter. The first thing I noticed when walking through the door was an impressive bar. The rest of the restaurant is open and has a slightly swanky feel, yet not pretentious. I'd feel comfortable whether in a suit or jeans (I was in the latter). Our waitress was phenomenal. Very gracious and friendly. I ordered their blackberry barbecue burger, choosing a house salad as my side. I also ordered a ginger ale to drink, which was magnificent - they make it in-house. The burger was excellent. The burger itself was tasty, an "American wagyu beef blend". The brie cheese, thick blackberry bbq sauce, arugula, and candied bacon, all of which topped the burger, blended perfectly for a deliciously unique taste. The bbq sauce had just a tiny bit of heat which I appreciated. The accompanying salad was pretty good too, with the arugula and candied almonds perking up the rest of the greens. The atmosphere of the place made me expect a higher bill than what I got - it was quite reasonable for the food served. I would probably indulge in something from their extensive wine, beer, and cocktail list on a return visit. read more

If you're in downtown Riverside, The State is hands down one of my favorite spots. The vibe is everything, modern, lively, and perfect for going out with friends or a cute date night. The food is always on point, but I have to talk about the poutine and the dates because I order them every single time now. I actually saw the poutine on TikTok first and had to try it, and it did not disappoint, it's rich, crispy, and super satisfying. The dates are also amazing, that perfect sweet and savory combo. The drinks are just as good if you're into trying something new. I've been here a few times and it never disappoints, the service is fast, the staff is super friendly, and the energy inside just makes the whole experience better. We ordered Brussels sprouts, street tacos, kids grilled cheese , kids chicken strips (took longer than usual since they said they burnt the first batch) and also a friend chicken sandwich with buffalo sauce. Everything was delicious mostly. The chicken strips were kind of sad though they were dry my daughter said. The buffalo sandwich could use some seasoning on the chicken portion. Walking around downtown we ended up going to the State and trying out the bar seating this time. We were surprised that they have a decent tequila selection for a primarily whiskey bar. We were greeted at the door and found a couple seats at the bar. Mona was our bartender and was very friendly and sweet. We tried the Dahlia Margarita and it was delicious. Food yummy and big portions! I did salad but appetizers look yummy I wanted to try and dates wrapped in bacon. Drinks huge whisky selection for all my whiskey friends. A must try and they can do fancy mocktails for all my non drinkers and pregnant mamas. PARKING: park in the big structure that's next to the city hall area. The restaurant is on the corner of the main street and it's busy. It's not as huge as the rancho location so make reservations. I highly recommend this for date nights and friends gathering. We had originally planned our anniversary dinner at another restaurant however plans fell through and we found the State. As soon as you walk in you see the bar and beautiful liquor wall. We walked in 30 min before closing (apologize ahead of time) and Cherri helped us with no hesitation. She was very polite and told us about last call. She recommended drinks and our service was quick. Our favorite dish was the shrimp tacos 10/10. Light, flaky, spicy tacos, didn't have that fried batter taste/thickness. The steak sandwich and Cajun shrimp Mac 8.5/10, delicious. After dinner, Cherri helped us snap a photo to remember our special day! Thank you to all the staff for saving our night. First time visiting this place. Was a little hesitant in coming here at first due their ratings on Yelp. But overall the food was good. My husband and I ordered: 1) bacon wrapped dates - had the right amount of sweetness from the dates and crunchiness and saltiness from the bacon, and cheese stuffed inside and the bits of cheese on the plate paired really well , 2) deep fried oysters - the chipotle aioli was a little too overpowering; couldn't really the taste the oysters due their thick batter or the amount of the sauce 3) shrimp tacos - had the same chipotle aioli on top but this had more flavor and was able to taste the shrimp; 4) braised short rib tacos - a little too dry and bland; I had to ask for a side of Pico de gallo which tasted so much better; 5) drunken pig burger - this was really good. The patty was cooked well and it was juicy! The dressing was not too strong. Had a good balance. 6) tempura onion rings - substituted the side of salad for the burger to tempura onion rings; these were really thick battered hence the name. Looks like a size of a small donut; Good. I love fried anything but a little too much for me. Had one full piece. Server was friendly. Attended to our requests promptly. The restaurant is quite small compared to what I had in mind. But just enough to seat good amount of people. The tables are spread out, not too clustered inside. I would definitely come again. Thank you for being such a kind personality, it really added to the atmosphere and the meal We came to walk around the Festival of Lights in Mission Inn Riverside. We decided to grab some food and the State was one of the only places that had food that interested us. We ordered the blackberry burger, spicy chicken sandwich, mac n cheese, and the cream brulee. This is by far the best food I have had in Riverside! The burger was delicious, cooked perfectly medium and the flavors created an imaging taste that makes you want to go back for another bite. The spicy chicken sandwich is great - we got the buffalo sauce on the side (which I recommend if you are sensitive to spice). We added fries to the plate for $1. The Mac n cheese has the perfect t cheese sauce blend that is light but packed with flavor. We wanted the bread pudding but unfortunately they had run out earlier in the night. We settled with the creme brûlée and it had an eggy custard which was a great finisher with not being too sweet. 2/5 Stars Our experience at The State of Downtown Riverside was pretty disappointing. We called ahead to check if we needed a reservation, and they told us walk-ins were fine, so we headed over. Upon arriving, we had trouble finding parking--it's holiday season, so we had to pay $20 just to park near the restaurant, which was frustrating. Once we got to the restaurant, we were seated, and the hostess immediately told us we had only 90 minutes to eat. We were confused if that meant we had 90 minutes to wait for our food or if it was just for our meal once it arrived. Either way, it felt rushed, and we couldn't fully relax knowing we had such a short time to enjoy our meal. We ordered the Filet Mignon Steak Sandwich ($21), which came with chimichurri marinated filet mignon, fresh tomato, arugula, fire roasted red bell peppers, grilled onions, and horseradish aioli, served on a toasted telera roll. The flavors were fine, and the sauce was just to my liking, but the sandwich was cold--like, cold as a dead bird. It was clear it had been sitting out for at least 10 minutes before they brought it to us, which was disappointing. I also ordered the Bourbon Barbecue Burger ($17), which came with applewood smoked bacon, aged white cheddar, house barbecue sauce, and tempura battered onion rings. I requested a modification to swap the regular beef patty for a vegan Impossible patty. When the burger came out, it was clear it wasn't fresh--the onion rings looked cold, and the oil dripping from them looked pretty unappetizing. It seemed like it had been sitting around for a while, and I wasn't about to eat something that might upset my stomach. I politely declined the burger and didn't even let it touch the table. My friend suggested I should just take it home, but I wasn't going to take a whole meal as a leftover that I didn't plan to eat. While the place looks cute and trendy, it felt more like a sports bar vibe rather than a place for a nice dinner. The food just didn't match the atmosphere, and it left me feeling pretty unsatisfied. This may be a different story at dinner time and on weekends. What I enjoyed: - Drunken Pig $18 This burger had stout bacon jam, apple-wood smoked bacon, aged white cheddar, coffee aioli, sunny side up egg & frisée American wagyu beef blend. The burger was served with their house salad, topped with candied almonds. That was sort of like a field greens salad. -Mac and cheese $12 the State's four cheese blend cheese sauce, cavatappi pasta, topped with toasted bread crumbs & chives. We added chicken for an additional charge - I believe it was an extra $6. It needed a piece of bread with it. They could learn something from the French. Large open space with a mix of table, booth, and bar seating. Hi! So I really wasn't planning to do a review since I just wondered in while looking for lunch on my break from jury duty at the courthouse. However I have to give an amazing shout out for the service here at The State! I had the tempura green bean appetizer and the maple glazed chicken over risotto. The chicken had an amazing cook on it! If you like sweet this is definitely for you. Risotto was great and flavorful. I'm not sure how I felt about the pairing but I really enjoyed the meal and it was well cooked. My green beans were a bit overdone. I wasn't planning to say anything because I was well just cranky from jury duty, but the manager happened to notice the cook on them and took them off the bill. I will say the dipping sauce that accompanied them was super good. Also my waitress was very friendly and super attentive. The atmosphere was nice and I really want to go back for dinner. Well, if you like to eat at a restaurant with rules and restrictions, this is the place for you! I'm giving them two stars because the place looks great and has a lot of potential, but whoever is managing it really needs to step their game up, because Dapper Lounge up the street will take all of your customers. I came here with a reservation for three of us and got there early. It's important to note, they were NOT busy whatsoever. I was waiting as my friends were arriving, and a couple before me without a reservation went and got seated in an empty booth. When my party arrived I asked for a booth as well and was told that they were being reserved for large parties. When I pointed out the couple who had just sat before I was told that they sat themselves down. So as we were being seated at a regular table, we were then handed a paper that said we only had an hour and a half to eat because of reservations. Blah blah blah. Everything just felt like we weren't going to be able to have a good time so we ended up leaving and went up the street to Dapper Lounge. All of this to say somebody recently suggested going here and I just couldn't do it. Won't do it and won't return. The manager did end up calling me because someone in our party left behind their sweater. I explained why we ended up leaving and I was offered a gift card. But honestly it wasn't even worth it to go back for that and have to deal with all of these restrictions and and rules that they don't apply evenly and don't even make sense. read more

Our waiter was very attentive even with the busy Mother's Day weekend. Every brunch item was great! Not too expensive, filling, and delicious. Too much cheese, not really curdy for the poutine. The gravy had like a wine reduction maybe, a little off-putting. I would've liked more fries, and for them not to be drenched in meat and gravy. We went on a Sunday night around 7/7:30 and were seated immediately. As we walked in, I couldn't help but notice the beautiful bar and its wall of selections! One of the first things I actually really enjoyed was the lighting because it wasn't too bright but also not too dark -- creating the perfect date-night atmosphere!! Our server was also incredibly helpful in providing us with information about the menu/drink selections, including and seasonal items! We ordered the Brussel Sprouts as an appetizer (they are pretty popular) and they were pretty good! They had a nice little crunch to them and the flavor really made them pop with every bite! I love The State. I frequent the other locations in Rancho and Redlands regularly and the food and drinks never disappoint. The Coffee Old Fashioned is top notch. They have a great brunch menu and their onion rings are the best onion rings I've ever had. Can we talk about Moses?! He is phenomenal and is so attentive. Not only did he provide excellent service, but he's got a great personality all around. Definitely stop in for drinks and appetizers. I cannot rave enough about their bacon wrapped stuffed dates. Last minute birthday party for 11 people, who do you call? The State. First impression, friendly and accommodating. Gentleman answering the phone assured me they could get me a same night reservation (with only about 2 hour notice) as long as we cleared out before their next reservations arrival - which was a good 2hr window. Seriously this man was so nice and a hero for helping! 2 of our party arrived a little early (approx 10 mins) and I was disappointed to hear that they were not allowed to be seated yet , even though our table was already laid out for our group/clearly for us, and the business was not extraordinarily busy. I could 100% understand if it was packed but it was not, and these were older people...who would have benefited from being seated and starting their drinks rather than standing and waiting, just my food for thought for the business. Once my group of 6 arrived, bringing the current total to 8, and writhing 3 minutes early of our reservation time were we then allowed to be seated. Our final 3 people arrives shortly thereafter. Our waitress was phenomenal. We got water right away, and this was then followed by a short period to look at the menu. We ordered and food (appetizers, alcohol, and entrees) arrived from the kitchen in short order. Kids meals were appropriate portion sizes and even the adult entrees were just right. I got the Cajun Mac and cheese with shrimp (shrimp are small) in a bowl I initially thought was tiny but honestly had a hard time finishing. My husband had the drunken pig burger that he devoured and his onion rings (which I stole one) was in my mind the star of the show (sooo good!). Our table shared some bruschetta , also delicious, and which you have to smear in the garlic/basaltic glaze on the dish to get the full effect. Kids meals were great - mine are picky so most got the buttered pasta which was right up their alley. Prices in food danced from $12 dollars on up, so a meal here can be as inexpensive or expensive as you choose to get. The alcohol choices were extensive and had their own separate menus, also raining from cheap to pricey. Sauce was creamy and flavorful and I added grilled chicken to mine for some added protein. Stopped by The State in Riverside for some dinner with the boys. This restaurant is very well-kept and the atmosphere was quiet and calming. We ordered a few appetizers before dinner, which consisted of oysters, poutine and bruschetta. All were amazing! All three of us ordered the New York Strip steak, which comes with broccolini and mashed potatoes. Only one issue with all three of our entrees; all three were supposed to be cooked to medium, but all came out as hockey pucks. We notified the server and she had all three recooked. Once our new steaks came, all three came out rare this time, so seared then served, but we ate them anyway. Not quite sure the cook knows how to cook a steak. The manager was awesome and took care of us for the mishap. One other item of note is when we were seated by the hostess, she made it a point to tell us that we only had an hour and a half from the time we sat to when we had to leave. She actually repeated this to us 3 times in a matter of a minute. Seemed kind of rude and off-putting. We'll more than likely come back to The State in the future. Pro tip: order a bourbon mule. The meatballs & brussel sprouts were also from the happy hour menu. * also recommend making a reservation, I made one ahead of time and we were seated almost as soon as we got there. I did hear they were pretty booked already for the night with reservations so maybe try to make one instead of walking in on the weekend. For the main entrees I got the pork chop with fries instead of the broccolini (an easy substitution). My fiancé got the bbq bacon burger with onion rings ($1 more) instead of fries. My pork chop was so juicy and had such a good flavor. The fries were really good! My mashed potatoes were a little bit cold but still good. My fiancé loved his burger but he did say the onion rings had a bit too much batter when trying to eat them. Overall though I really enjoyed my meal, our appetizers & drinks.
