Sotho Sopra is a place where you can experience luxury flavor, even from home! I was very pleased with my order of seafood risotto. The fish was fresh, flavorful, and it was still hot when it arrive to my home. (Shoutout to the delivery angels!!) I also, on a separate occasion, ordered their steak for my fiancé, and that blew him out of the water. Wonderful restaurant and wonderful service!! My boyfriend took me here for my birthday on a Tuesday evening and we had a great experience. It was the first time here for both of us so we didn't know what to expect. I immediately loved the decor and the atmosphere. The wait staff were all very friendly and did a fantastic job! The food was EXCELLENT. I have had dreams about the Moulard Duck Breast and can't wait to return to have it again. The charcuterie board was delicious and well worth the price. We both declined dessert because were just way too full, but our server brought out a small dish of vanilla gelato anyway for my birthday. It even had a super fun sparkler in it! That was such a special touch and great way to end our meal - and delicious too! I HIGHLY recommend Sotto Sopra if you're looking for great Italian food. read more

I came here for restaurant week during lunch and had the Soft polenta with snail ragout and lavender honey salmon. The snail had a really strong earthy taste and definitely needed the garlic butter to cover it up. It was my first time having polenta and it reminded me of grits. The salmon was cooked really well and had a nice crunch on the skin. You could even taste a small hint of lavender infused throughout. Service was great and they were easily able to substitute the mashed potatoes that normally comes with the salmon for extra vegetables. Great meal, but minus 1 star for the small hair I found at the bottom of my plate towards the end of my meal. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I'm not a big fan of Italian food. In fact, I don't think I have ever craved italian food until dipping my feet wet into some of the fantastic Italian restaurants in Baltimore - and Sotto Sopra is on my list for great food in the city. My boyfriend and I headed here during restaurant week and I was blown away by the attention to detail, the fragrant flavors from each bite, and the mouthwatering experience from our three course meal. it was truly a trip trying out such a diverse array of Italian food all while staying in the comfort of North Charles Street, only steps away from where we live. The first appetizer, mozzarella with beets was unique - the juiciness of the beets married with the rich yet fluffy mozzarella worked really well. The second appetizer - calamari was lightly battered and very soft and juicy. With a light squeeze of a lemon on top, Chef Ramsay would be proud. Onto the entrees - my boyfriend ordered the bronzino (I'm not a huge fish person but this didn't have a fishy taste at all). It was again lightly marinated in lemon, very very soft and tender l (like a baby's butt) - first time where I actually enjoyed eating fish. I ordered the gnocchi which is something that is normally a hit or miss for me, but was definitely a hit here. They use a marinara sauce that is not overly tomato-y or saucy - where you can still feel the texture of the potato in the gnocchi but is very tender to the bite. It was absolute flavor town the moment I took my first bite and loved how the flavors of the basil, tomato, and potatoes married together so well. The service was phenomenal. Speedy, reliable, polite - everything you want when dining in a romantic and ambient setting like this. This place is perfect for a date night or anniversary - and oh so romantic - I forgot I was still in Baltimore the whole night. I did however Knock off a star because if it wasn't restaurant week I don't think I would come here again. It's simply too overpriced for what it normally is and only think I would make this a once a year kind of thing (aka only come during restaurant week). There are many many other very delicious Italian places I have tried in Baltimore for half the price point and think that when comparing Sotto Sopra as a whole with its competitors, it doesn't really stand out as a place that I would frequent often (only for special occasions). My friend and I had a show, and, not being able to take anything with us, decided to get the charcuterie board appetizer and split an entree. The board had some real delights; the breaded fried eggplant was incredible and still hot. Wish there had been more of that. The large caper berries were delightful. The proscuitto was cut a little thick for my taste with wide bands of pure fat. Some fat is good, but this was a little much. Nice salamis. The cheese would have really been good, but it was ice cold and we did not have an abundance of time. The salad greens were cold, crisp, well seasoned and a delightful shaving on top. For the entree we got a special; seafood pappardelle, with shrimp, lobster, and scallops. We were not impressed. Besides the shrimp, there was no other seafood; half a dozen mushy lumps, about a quarter teaspoon in size, of what might have been lobster, but overcooked whatever they were. No scallops. And sauce was bland, not much lobster flavor. I actually had to ask for salt. We both agreed that the description sounded much better than what was served, and at $49 we expected a little more than just half a dozen shrimp. But we recovered, with each of us getting the creme brulee, which was excellent, still hot and crisp on the surface, the custard underneath rich, cool and smooth. Excellent flavor. We both agreed we just wouldn't get that entree again if we returned. The service was excellent considering we shared our waiter with a large noisy table next to us. read more

Came to Baltimore for work and this was the restaurant closest to our hotel. I had the best pear martini, I highly recommend. If you are thinking of doing the half portions I promise you it is a lot of food. We got two half portions each and felt bad because we waisted a lot of food. However, staff and ambiance were great. For my entree I chose the frutti di mare but I tweaked it a lil bit, instead of calamari I asked for crab meat(IF it could be done, it was done). This dish was DIVINE! The squid ink noodles, that perfect tomato sauce, shrimp and crab meat topped with fresh Parmesan cheese & pepper; chefs kiss! My third course was the vanilla créme brûlée that was absolutely INCREDIBLE! Thee best créme brûlée I've had in a restaurant thus far! I scraped the container, check the pictures I posted. Two Decades Later and Still Dazzles We've been coming here since 1999 and the place has only gotten better. The house-made pasta never disappoints, but on this visit, the stars were the Seafood Cioppino and Lobster Risotto. Beyond the starring food, it's really the impeccable service that sets Sotto Sopra apart from most other restaurants. From the hostess, wait staff, to the back bartender, they simply rise above in giving you a truly amazing experience. I recently looked up romantic restaurants in Baltimore because my boyfriend and I wanted to go to a restaurant where the ambiance was intimiate. Sotto Sopra was one of the first search results that populated and we figured we'd give it a go since the pictures of the restaurant on google looked charming. When we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a friendly hostess who brought us to our seats. The restaurant is absolutely stunning in person. It gives an old, but yet modern Italian restaurant feel. There are huge mirrors in the main dining area which make the restaurant appear far bigger than it is, which is a nice touch. There was a huge bouquet of flowers by the entrance, dimly lit lights, and candles emitting a soft glow on each table. I'm all about the aesthetics of a restaurant and the ambiance of this restaurant did not disappoint! Now, onto the food. I ordered the pumpkin ravioli and I can say with confidence that it is was one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. The flavor of the pumpkin was decadent, but not overpowering. It was a nice subtle touch of pumpkin mixed in with a light cream sauce. My boyfriend had no complaints about his pasta carbonara. The service was also wonderful. Our glasses were constantly filled and we were checked on all throughout the service. One thing my boyfriend did mention is that he felt that the employees were a bit pushy about us ordering desserts. When we were about to leave, our waitress stopped told us to wait a bit because they had something for us. She brought us a raspberry gelato with a sparkler on top to split because free of charge as an anniversary dessert. It was AMAZING. On a hot summer day, I'd definitely go back to get a raspberry gelato. I do have to mention that my boyfriend found it strange that the waitress only brought us the raspberry gelato after we had left a big dip. He didn't think she would have brought out the raspberry gelato at all since she had already asked us if we wanted dessert, to which we politely declined. It was a weird situation. This is our local go to. Great ambiance. Excellent cocktails. Pasta options are limited. No pasta entrees featuring capelleni or angel hair, parpardelle... lasagna . Stuffed pastas is their go-to. Try the specials and carne. Menu really hasn't changed in the two years we've been going. The bread basket is terrible ... no real bread, only crumbly focaccia. I stopped by Sotto Sopra for Baltimore Restaurant Week 2016 and had an overall solid experience, with one caveat: everything was way too salty. Without exaggeration, I downed 5-6 cups of water after dinner, and this is coming from someone who usually has 1-2 cups of water a DAY. Dinner was 3 courses for $35 (mine was $40 due to a $5 supplement): * Started with complementary breadsticks and foccacia: the foccacia was really good, albeit overly salted. Warm, chewy, and delightful. Definitely ate way too much bread at the beginning of the meal, but it was worth it. 1. Finocchiona e Burrate in Insalata (fennel salami, Burrata cheese): basically a salad with burrata cheese and salami. Portion size was generous, and the dish was well executed. The saltiness/fattiness of the salami was nicely counteracted by the bright/acidic notes of the dressing as well as the refreshing lightness of the burrata. Not particularly interesting, but was very happy with my choice. 2. Il Cioppino di Sotto Sopra (lobster bisque, mussels, clams, salmon, other seasonal fish, Tuscan bread): This required a $5 supplement. Hearty and rich, but very, very salty. Also, the giant lobster claw that made the presentation very impressive was disappointingly meat-less. Overall, I've definitely had better cioppino elsewhere with more generous portions of seafood. Would not order again, but still enjoyed. 3. Semolina Cake: The description that the waiter gave made me jump for this, but the actual execution/flavors were a bit disappointing. He described a warm, flour cake with mascarpone whipped cream and a maple glaze. In reality, the cake wasn't bad, but the glaze tasted very artificial and sickly syrupy. The whipped cream was great - light but still good flavor, but whipped cream alone does not a good dessert make. Service was attentive, polite, and efficient. Our waiter was a delight and made the meal memorable. Overall, 3.5 star food, 5 star service, rounded down to 3 due to the overwhelmingly saltiness of the food. read more

I went here for dinner on NYE and even though the restaurant was very busy, the service was still on point. We tried: Beet salad with goat cheese fritters - the fried goat cheese is ammmmaaaazzing! Perfect crunchy exterior and warm interior. I just wish there was more of this yummy goodness in the salad! Spinach Ravioli - this was a good dish but our least favorite of the night. The ravioli was tender and stuffed with spinach with a tart tomato sauce. Pesto Gnocchi - seriously, some of the best gnocchi that I've had. The gnocchi was beyond pillow soft and the sauce was so good that we were trying to get every last bit of it. Apple Pie w/salted caramel gelato - this was the perfect way to end our meal. I have eaten at Sotto Sopra a couple of times, most recently for Baltimore Restaurant Week. Every single time, it's been a hit! Nothing is more frustrating to me than when a restaurant uses Restaurant Week to slack on their menu. Sotto Sopra does the exact opposite: they bring their A-game. The salmon tartare and the flatbread were amazing appetizers and the Veal Saltimbocca brought back memories of travels to Italy. The dessert was the cherry on top for a perfect meal. We all shared our desserts and it was difficult to choose a favorite. The service was impeccable, from the hostess to the bartenders. Our server was knowledgable and gave great recommendations, but also had a fun personality. I'm a pasta fanatic so I had very high hopes Sotto Sopra. I was very satisfied! Because it was BRW I wasn't able to see the full menu with their regular pricing, but for $15 for a two-course lunch, it was well worth the price. We started with an order of calamari and the Boston lettuce salad. The salad was really tasty, as were the calamari. The calamari was fried so lightly it was almost like "calamari puff". That's the best way to eat squid, IMO. And it came with two sauces, a white and a red. The red sauce was like a gourmet cocktail sauce, amazing. For lunch my manager has the clam risotto and I had the penne bolognese. I LOVVEEEE bolognese so I was hard pressed to see if this would stand up to others I've had. It wasn't the best but it was pretty damn good. I don't really care for penne pasta so I wish they wouldv'e had the option to change the pasta. But all in all, lunch was fab. Looking at the regular lunch menu, the bolognese is $10 and the risotto of the day is $13. I think that's well worth the quality and portion that you receive. I didn't need to go to many places to know that Sotta Sopra had one of the best restaurant week menus. After hearing many good things about the restaurant, I came here with a few friends who were visiting on their last night in Baltimore. Luckily we were able to get seated right away without a reservation. With so many good choices on the menu is was difficult to make our decisions, and all of the food we ended up having was amazing: Our 1st course choices: wedge salad (surprisingly simple and delicious), goat cheese fritter salad with arugula and beats, prosciutto with tomato and burrata cheese. Oh and the warm bread with olive oil. So great. 2nd course entrees: fettucini alla bolognese, gnocchi di ricotta, pan seared cod. We went wrong with none of these. The bolognese was again simple and delicious with a very hearty taste and of course the handmade fettucini noodles. The gnocchi with fresh tomato sauce is a classic. And the pan seared cod was just outstanding. The fish was very soft and flaky and I ate every last bite off of my plate. 3rd course desserts: creme brulee and chocolate molten cake. Ive been here about 10 times. Sotta Sopra is a Baltimore treasure. With an atmosphere that is warm, inviting and with terrific service, I could stop there. There are murals worth exploring, giamt mirrors, a great bar...all tucked into a Mount Vernon Brownstone. However, the food is extraordinary with a menu that has so many hard to choose choices. The cheese plates (pick three) are wow...the salad (ceasar!!!!!) and pastas (bolognese) impossible to pass up! But thats the tough part...i want all this...but then...the branzino, ribeye, filets, ...it just goes on... Finally, the owner is socially awesome. He helped us with an event for our Second Chance students...all with a percentage of a night that had a 7 cprse special siciliano meal. Look for: kids valentines...amd opra night! read more

The place was packed but we didn't wait too long for a table since we had a reservation. Unfortunately there's no where to stand when you do have to wait so we were like awkwardly standing in what felt like the middle of the restaurant, on top of one another with no where to sit. I definitely didn't like this. Once we got seated We started off with some drinks. All of which were decent. For apps we had the Caesar solid which was terrible. The lettuce was brown and the presentation in this filo dough thing was so pointless. The fried polenta was bland and the sauce tasted like Mayonnaise and ketchup. The grilled calamari was decent albeit too oily. The entrees were subpar. My short rib ravioli was the best dish on the table. But the sauce was 90% oil. My wife's squid ink pasta with seafood was missing the seafood. However my father in law ordered the same dish and his did in fact have seafood. Very inconsistent. The sauce in this dish was like pure cream. Way too heavy. Needed a salty component, some Parmesan and a seafood stock.. My mother in laws rockfish special was so tiny my three year old could have finished it. Although she did say the dish itself was decent. For dessert two of us ordered the molten lava cake. One of them was a flat and dry cake. The other was moist, fluffy and twice the size. I honestly haven't seen this kind of inconsistency in my life. It's as if no one looks or measures these dishes before they're served. Will I come back? Not counting on it. There's too many other Italian restaurants I enjoy way more. read more

This is probably the best dinner we had on our trip! Obviously this place is popular, with a reservation we still waited for 25 mins. But the lovely server and delicious food already made it up for us ;) so worth it! My husband and spent a little date night here and all I can say is that I'm so glad I picked up this restaurant. our server was really helpful and sweet, I asked his recommendation between Caesar salad and goat cheese salad, he picked the latter one for us, and I was so glad that I listen to his opinion because that goat cheese salad was probably the best salad that I've ever had in 2020. Its fresh, has a slight tint of sweetness and sourness that just melts into your mouth perfectly with the fried goat cheese. My husband is not a salad person yet he finished his portion without my help;) This is a perfect opening for my following entrees, and tastes like a fresh garden in the morning after a whole rainy night. And let's talk about the entree! I ordered a short rib ravioli, and my husband ordered a seafood dish (sorry I forgot the name of it but it's seafood tomato soup over rice). The short rib ravioli has an extremely creamy stuffing, fully seasoned, but you can taste the freshness of the meat. No more no less, just the perfect amount. Although it's tasty, for me it's still a bit heavy to eat it all by myself, so I shared it with my husband and had a taste of his seafood dish. I have to say that was a perfect match. On the opposite of the ravioli, the seafood is so refreshing, all soaked into the tomato soup in a stylish bowl. Just one bite, I could feel sparkling in my mouth. After eating the appetizers, we barely ate our entrees, the soft shell crab sandwich. All of the food was good. The fried calamari was a mixture of fried squid and vegetables. We had Cioppino, which is one of my favorite Mediterranean dishes, was luke-warm, had tons of overcooked vegetables, and the broth tasted like vegetable soup. The restaurant looks really inviting from inside and the servers were very friendly as well at first. The menu looked great except there were very few vegetarian options. So we got to chose for an appetizer, an Entree and an dessert for three course meal. I confirmed with the waiter on my vegetarian options and the decided to go for warm goat cheese salad followed by Ravioli and last but not least the creme brulee. The salad was very delicious but the horrible part was main entree. I got the ravioli and tasted very salty and I got nauseous as soon as I had the first bite. I called the waiter again to confirm what was in the ravioli and I was told that it had some kind of Italian beef! I mean I specifically asked him twice about the vegetarian options and he chose to serve me beef. It might be not a big deal for him but it kind of was for me! I have been vegetarian my whole life and it GROSSED me out that I ate an animal. I Pointed it out and they took it back but at that point I was too grossed out to eat and they didn't refund me anything or apologize for this blunder! Very nice place! Let's start with COVID-19. Everyone wore masks. Restaurant was VERY CLEAN! There was hand sanitizer at the front. Now onto dinner! We all had something different. This cute Italian restaurant is so easily missed when driving by! My friends dad wanted to take us out to eat and brought us to this Italian restaurant for a good meal. We got a bottle of wine for the table and started off dinner with polenta (not pictured) and some bread with oil. The bread here is so so good. I love all breads, but truly this bread really hits the spot! The polenta was yummy. It was my first time having it so hard to have something to compare it to, but my friends were saying it was very good. I ordered the duck tortellini and each tortellini was filled with a lot of duck. I'm not exactly sure what the sauce was (more gravy like than a cream or tomato sauce), but it was still tasty! My boyfriends mushroom pizza was probably my favorite of the night. Did not skimp out on the mushroom or cheese and the ratio of the crust was perfect. The service was uptight and agitated - our waiter was not very accommodating and borderline rude to some of my peers. He also bumped his elbow on my head when trying to serve the entrees. [Entrees] The portions were small especially compared to the large plates they were served on. Il Cioppino Di Sotto Sopra - This was seriously not worth an extra $10. Sure, you a little bit of lobster, but it was just some seafood mixed with tomatoes and toasted bread on top. Pan-Seared Atlantic King Salmon - The honey lavender flavor on the fish was nice and subtle. Pollo Organico Ripeno Di Salsicca - Chicken was fine - The meat wasn't overcooked. Pappardelle Sotto Sopra - I'm assuming this Italian place makes their own noodles - This dish was fine, could use some protein or additional ingredient though since it was just noodles, cheese and tomato sauce. First time visiting this restaurant and first time in Baltimore. We went with another couple who live near Baltimore and who also happens to be a former high school classmate. We had reservations and were seated promptly. The place was busy at 7pm and that's a good thing. The lighting was a touch too dim for me but it was a nice way to set the mood. The decor is very ornate with a touch of classy gaudy! We were sat in the middle of the room and the servers were very attentive. My wife ordered the squid ink seafood spaghetti which was very tasty. The sauce was incredible and the seafood perfectly cooked. I ordered the short rib ravioli. All their pasta is house-made and this came with truffle oil and mushrooms atop. The flavor was excellent, texture was perfect and it was a very tasty dish. My only complaint is that I could have used one more ravioli. (the portion was just a bit on the small side). Our friends ordered the gnocchi which was a good portion and I think it came with a vodka sauce. I didn't taste it but to looked heavenly. They also ordered the Salmon dish. It was a good portion of salmon and from my spot across the table, looked properly cooked (I like mine on the med-rare side). We had dessert too which was ok. My wife had the molten chocolate cake and I had the apple strudel. Once again, they were ok at best. Overall, We were pleased. The service was attentive and the food was tasty without any problems. Avoid during restaurant week - savings not worth getting sick The Good Service was amazing the staff bent over backwards to accommodate the baby one of the three couples brought to the restaurant. The intimate setting was wonderful and the bread was delicious. The Bad Valet and street parking. Expect to be approached by multiple homeless for various requests. Not the restaurant's fault but worth noting if you are not familiar with Baltimore. The Ugly Half of the six adults in our party fell ill shortly after dinner. We should have ended the evening after the funny tasting fried calamari appetizer was served. We powered thru and in hindsight should have heeded the second and third warnings when the odd tasting pappardelle and gnocchi were served. read more

Had a great time here for restaurant week. Definitely nice ambience, first of all; good for dates and celebrating special occasions. I really enjoyed the dishes I chose from the restaurant week menu and didn't feel like they skimped on quality or portions, which I really appreciated. I got the lamb meatballs (delicious), pumpkin ravioli (amazing), and marscapone cheesecake (divine). Presentation was excellent and flavors/taste was quite perfect. I will say my friends ordered other things that seemed less impressive and less worth the cost, so I definitely recommend those three dishes in particular! I was going to choose "could've been better" because our waiter was quite the gentleman, but the food, other service, and ambiance made for a poor evening. Our food was not bad, but I had expected more. My homemade ravioli (pumpkin puree stuffing) was rather flavorful as was the crumbled salsiccia, but my wife's duck breast was as chewy as a poor cut of beef, the broccoli spears were under-cooked, and the scalloped potatoes were bland. The low point of the evening, however, was the ambiance. That began with the maître d'. He was young and perhaps he was new, but for a restaurant that presents itself via it's online photos as a fine dining venue, one expects at least the maître d' to wear a tie. One of the waiters did, and I wanted to thank him for that. He and I were the only persons to do so. I also had expected to be escorted to our table as I had made the reservation two weeks in advance and stated clearly to the staff person taking my call that the 24th of September was our 45th anniversary. And while I certainly didn't expect a red carpet, it was dismaying to sit for five minutes while a table was cleared. The other disappointment was no fault of the restaurant. One can't fault them for the customers coming through their door, but I understood (perhaps I was wrong) that Sotto Sopra had a dress code. Yes, many restaurants that managed to survive Covid-19 are only now getting back on their feet, and you can't turn away business, but blue jeans with frayed pockets? White sneakers with ankle socks? A pale blue t-shirt not even tucked inside the pants? Many of those customers looked as if they had just come from a little league ball game or car wash. And that was a Sunday night. And while the lack of customer manners is not the restaurant's fault, the photos adorning their website give quite a different impression. I almost thought we were in the wrong place. We went here for restaurant week. Definitely nice ambience, but maybe a little too dark. It's better for romantic dates instead of coming with friends. The service was great though! I got the calimari (delicious), cheese ravioli (just ok) and pitaschio creme brulee which was good. I just don't know if it was all worth the price. I'll maybe try again some other time I shared the marscapone cheesecake (which was amazing) My friend got the lamb meatballs which she loved and the pumpkin ravioli which she also loved. read more

We were in town for an event at The Lyric so we wanted something nice but close to the theater. I found this on yelp and booked it. The restaurant was very nice, great atmosphere for visiting (there were four of us). Our waiter (sorry forgot his name) was excellent! He was quick to take our drink orders which is always great. He checked with us to see if we were attending an event so they could be aware of our timing. He was very informative about the homemade pastas. I asked for a substitute on my order and he was very happy to accommodate. He was very polite and professional. The dinner itself was amazing!! The pumpkin ravioli was SO delicious!! And all other people in our party really liked their dinners as well. ( Gnocchi Al Pomodoro, Short Rib Ravioli) Dessert was great also.
