It's date night! But only because it's restaurant week. For a couple of years I've always lived next door but never visited. It's always when I have it nearby I can go anytime but never actually go. The interior was giving cool date night vibes. There was a bar in the back of the restaurant. The best restaurants are the ones that serve a basket full of warm toasty bread. It came with rosemary garlic olive oil which was perfect for dipping. We definitely made sure to keep our basket full with refills. I love a good deal especially during restaurant week but after our appetizers of salad and pizza, we were already full. Guess we knew we're getting our moneys worth. I was indecisive between the stuff chicken and branzino. Although I chose the former, I wish I went with the latter since the chicken was dry. At this point I didn't think we had enough room for dessert. We opted for tiramisu and cheesecake. I had a bite of each and then I exploded. Just kidding. We were looking for a nice place to celebrate a birthday dinner. This place was perfect. This place nailed it on all things I consider to be critical for an enjoyable dining experience. An experience that you talk about for days after. Service, ambiance, and food. Service-waiter was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable of the menu. A bit reserved and not as high energy as I would have liked, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. Ambiance-the place is just flat out gorgeous. I felt like I was in a Italian restaurant in the heart of Harlem. It has a smooth, relaxed, elegant vibe to it. Dim lighting, giving it a romantic vibe, which was perfect for the occasion. Food- Everything was perfect. From the bread brought out at the beginning all the way to the vanilla gelato with strawberry and mint that came out to close out the celebration. The highlight for me was the Pork Ossobucco. I had never had this dish, but wanted to give it a try. Mind blowing. If you are a pork eater... you need to try this dish. You will not be disappointed. The pork was falling off the bone and melted in your mouth. The flavors of the sauce along with the truffle risotto were just breath taking. Risotto was cooked perfectly. The dish itself is a bit heavy, but could be great to split between two. We also went for the short rib ravioli, as I am a sucker for anything with short rib in it. Another fabulous dish. This is a nice restaurant to go to for a date. The dining experience is a bit more up-scale and you'll see people generally dressed up more nicely for dinner. Accordingly, the food is also bit on the pricey side, but the portions are generous enough so that you won't leave hungry. This is my second time at Sotto Sopra. The first time I ordered the Fruti di Mari and my date ordered the short rib ravioli. The short rib ravioli was underwhelming after the great things that we had heard about it, but the squid ink pasta was decent. Pictured here is the pan seared branzino filet and the ravioloni di zucca con salsiccia. These two dishes we enjoyed more than the ones that we had when we first came here. The fish was very flavorful, well seasoned, and tender. The beet base on the bottom was a nice sweet contrast to the acidity of the fish above. We have been wanting to try Sotto Sopra for months and finally were able to visit for dinner. Wow the interior is simply gorgeous with luxury vibes and beautiful decor. The music is elegant with an upscale ambiance. Our waiter, David, was a little inattentive and did not provide the expected level of service. The bread was flavorful with rich herbs. The wine was great and vast options. As for entrees, this is where I was very disappointed. I ordered the gnocchi and it was extremely underwhelming- there was no flavor and it was very bland. I could barley eat is because it had no taste. I have dinned at numerous other Italian restaurants in Baltimore and this was by far the worst gnocchi I have had. My fiancé ordered the veal pasta and enjoyed it. The gnocchi was just highly mediocre and bland. We also ordered the chocolate lava cake- now this was delicious. The cake was warm and it has vanilla gelato that paired perfectly. Between my terrible entree and the port service from David, this was one of the more poor dining experiences I have had within Baltimore. As well, the prices are steep for the extremely small portions of the entrees. Bland meals and overpriced. Not pleased with our dinner here, unfortunately. read more

Normally I'm not a big fan of pasta (don't hate me) but I still want to give it a try because everything deserves a chance. Came here during restaurant week and for appetizers we ordered calamari and Maryland mussels. Both were amazingggg, I have had a lot of calamari in my lifetime and I must say, they made one of the best calamari in town. The mussels were also very delicious, the sauce that the mussels bathe in were rich and creamy, great dipping for the bread, although the mussels were on the smaller side, the portion size kinda made up for it. For entrees both of us order the Squid Ink Pasta (frutti de mare) and tbh it was quite disappointing.. the pasta was heaven I'll give them that, it was soft, chewy and overall very fresh. However, the flavor itself just wasn't there... it was lacking lots of salt, quite bland to be frank, I had to ask for salt and load it with ton of cheese to have some kind of seasoning. It was ashamed because I've heard so many great things about the dish. For dessert, we ordered tiramisu and cheesecake, both were very refreshing and delicious. I prefer the cheesecake because of the raspberry sorbet, perfect tartness and sweetness. TLDR; the appetizers were delicious for sure, get the calamari and Maryland mussels. My coworker and I decided to visit this place for Baltimore City's Restaurant Week. We chose from a pool of 3 places and this restaurant won us over. I wanted to love this place and overall I did. It was both our 1st time there and the menu was very appealing. We were greeted by Patrick who was very kind and shared a few popular items from the menu that was recommended. We ordered Chopped Caesar Salad, Fried Calamari, Crab Cake Sandwich & Honey & Lavender Salmon. The kitchen to table time was excellent. I loved my Caesar Salad but my coworker ordered the Calamari & noticed a few bites into her appetizer, there were onions. She is allergic to onions which is a very serious deal, and any restaurant of caliber would list this in the menu to allow patrons to make a decision if they would like onions to accompany Calamari. This was brought to Patrick's attention and he was very empathetic. He stated he would share with management and offered her another menu item but she declined. Patrick also revisited the conversation before we left for the afternoon by apologizing again and stated that he would let his manager now. That meant something. Next my lavender salmon and my colleagues fried crab cake came out. The food looked so good that I wanted to eat both orders. My collegue really enjoyed her crab cake and I really really really enjoyed my salmon. The lavender was so soft yet potent. That sounds sounds crazy right? I absolutely mean that it was so good! I am a huge fan of lavender so I was very pleased w the taste. I would absolutely visit this establishment again !! The best thing we had wasn't prepared / made by the restaurant.........the wine (Cabernet). We ordered: The Beet Caprese 2/10 - I was actually taken back by the size of this appetizer (how large it was) which ordinarily is a good thing but also questioned if we were eating canned beets.....but two points for mozzarella, I guess. Short Rib Ravioli 0/10 - What the f*ck happened? Just no. The pasta tasted like a tire and the short rib tasted like cinnamon. Seafood Risotto 1/10 - I'm giving this a one because it wasn't bad but it certainly was far from good. I watched my fiancé as politely as one can, pull fish scales out of his mouth because the skin wasn't removed. Also if you like overcooked, rubbery calamari this is the dish for you because there was a A LOT of calamari. The real issue I had was how expensive this meal was. We sat down a little after 6:10pm and left at 6:58pm. That's how fast our food came out and that's how fast we left. All jokes aside, the staff was friendly and attentive. Great space with a classic modern fusion, palatial ceilings, tile everywhere, and majestic murals offset by larger-than-life mirrors blended with red velvet and lush curtains. But sadly no cloth tablecloths. The wine list is thorough, but I'm partial to Californian vines. Our server Josef was attentive and incredibly knowledgeable, with excellent recommendations for their wine list pairings with their menu. Josef and the team's service was top-notch. Everyone was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious; the fresh bread and olive oil were terrific; we split the Goat Cheese Salad, I had the Seafood Risotto, and my companion had the Beet and Ricotta Ravioli. The food was terrific and more than we could finish - take home. I tried Sotto Sopra for the first time during Baltimore restaurant week! They were doing a 3 course dinner for $45 and overall it was a nice experience! We had an 8:45 reservation on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy but we were seated right away. We had some time to look at the menu and then for restaurant week you order all three courses at the same time. For the starter I ordered the pumpkin soup (they were sold out of the tomato soup) which I really enjoyed but it was definitely on the sweet side. For the main I got the short rib ravioli. I really liked the texture of the pasta, it tasted home made. The short rib filling was good but I kind of wished it had more flavor. And there were only four raviolis so while they were pretty big and decently filling, I kind of wish there were more. For dessert I got the tiramisu which was good. It tasted like a classic tiramisu and I love tiramisu. Overall it was a nice meal, although for the price nothing really stood out. read more

I've been here 6 times now over about a 4 year period. The first 4 were great, food was awesome and so was the service. The last 2 were regretful, all within the last year. Their portions have shrunk to what seems half of what they used to give and now they charge an extra percentage for the price of goods. The economy is hard on all of us and now they are pushing it onto their customer. They no longer offer complimentary bread, you have to pay $7. The place is shrinking their portions and charging more for less. It's hard on everyone but don't take it out on the people that keep you in business. read more

Our selections: Appetizers - Calamari fritti (paired with an addictive garlic aioli) and Goat cheese salad (refreshing yet full of umami) Main - Branzino Filet (well cooked, but not my favorite), Pollo ripieno (chicken can be very risky to order, but this was incredibly juicy and flavorful, a favorite!) One of the things I dislike most about restaurant week is how limited the menus can be with options, but Sotto Sopra does not limit the customer! There were so many options to choose from for all three courses! It was difficult to choose because they all looked so good. I ordered the lamb meatballs, gnocchi bolognese, and tiramisu, and my boyfriend ordered the fried calamari, fettuccine carbonara, and the cheesecake. This was my favorite place to eat when I visited Baltimore. I had such a good dinner here. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the wines and patient enough to let us try a couple before deciding. He recommended the cheese plate for us to share and we enjoyed that for a bit with our wine. Next, while I know you typically shouldn't go to an Italian restaurant and not order Italian food, but the waiter recommended a steak on special that I will probably never be able to forget, the flavor is so deeply ingrained in my taste buds' memory. It was HUGE, and cooked perfectly for me at my desired medium well. I'm going to stop there - words can't do this steak justice. Do yourself a favor and try the steak. I was also able to try the gnocchi. If you're looking for a true pasta dish, go for that pesto gnocchi. SO. GOOD. I went to Sotto Sopra tonight with my girlfriend and the experience was far from good. I give this restaurant one star only on the fact that our server Victoria was highly attentive and politely served us all evening. Anyways, we are not from Baltimore and we were highly looking forward to this restaurant given such high reviews. However, the elegantly-scripted menus, candle-lit ambience, odd shaped plates, and highly-inflated prices were not reflected in the quality or taste of the food itself. The pasta was supposedly "house made fresh" however that did not seem to be the case. Also in my carbonara, the pancetta was either entirely undercooked or was ham; it honestly tasted like a ham Alfredo. My partners raviolis were supposed to be spinach and ricotta filled and there was 95% spinach and little ricotta to be found on the entire plate. Not to mention our entrees came out alarmingly quick - no more than 5 minutes from when we ordered. We ended our meal with two cups of espresso which helped keep us awake as we drove to the local McDonald's. While this seems to be a locals favorite, I highly suggest any out-of-towner (looking for the promise of classic, upscale Italian food) stays far away. Good drinks, kind waitstaff, and a lot of fluff covering up expensive sub-par food. read more

Sotto Sopra has been a fine to excellent restaurant in Baltimore for many years, and we were confident to recommend it to a friend from Boston here for a medical conference. But it was Wednesday and we were one of only 3 tables in the restaurant with patrons. No one else ever walked through the door until they closed. The salad that two of us ordered was a special Pear salad. It had truly no taste, no seasoning, and no acid at all, despite being very wet. We asked for anything to liven it and after being given more tasteless dressing, we asked for some balsamic vinegar. That finally helped a bit. The pasta was no better. I had a fettuccine with tomato, spinach, and cream sauce. Ok but no seasoning at all. No garlic, herbs, salt, or pepper. And my colleagues the same. I'll begin this review with an apology for not capturing any of the amazing food. I devoured the food before even thinking of taking a photo. I pulled up to this restaurant and thought it was closed because it was so dark through the windows. However, once inside, I felt like I was transported to a secret gem in Florence or Venice. The only negative comment I have is that they charge $3.00 (for 2 people) for the homemade bread... Every other Italian restaurants that I have been to give out free bread for the table. FOOD: 1. Boston Lettuce Salad - Bibb lettuce, blanched almonds, shaved gorgonzola, cheese, cherry tomatoes, herb & honey vinaigrette dressing. When I first got this, I was like "wait what? this is it?" but the combination of the dressing, the crunchy almonds and shaved gorgonzola really worked. I ended up asking for more parmesan because I like my salad to drown in cheese. 2. Chopped Caesar Salad - Homemade caesar dressing, cherry tomato, parmesan cheese and focaccia croutons. Your typical Caesar sald, nothing exotic but the portion was big, croutons added a nice crunch and the homemade caesar dressing was creamy and yummy. 3. Fried Calamari - Spicy marinara, garlic aioli. This was good but the entire plate was not all fried calamari, there were mixes of fried vegetable. It almost felt like vegetable tempura haha! But I understand why they did that, I mean the lunch deal is only $15/person. 4. Snail Ragout - Soft polenta, garlic butter. There were only 4 pieces of snail but understandable considering the cheap lunch deal. This was delicious but I am personally not a fan of polenta because it's too mushy for my liking. 5. Fried Soft Shell Crab Sandwich - Lettuce, tomato, maryland style aioli, old bay french fries. LOVE LOVE LOVE fried soft shell crab in literally everything. Super yummy sandwich but the fries were a big let down (nobody likes soggy fries!). 6. Risotto of the Day - Basil pesto and shrimp (extra $5 for shrimp). This was my favorite. The basil fragrance in the pesto was amazing. Risotto was cooked slightly al dente (just the way I like my risottos) and the shrimp was cooked nicely (not chewy at all). Very flavorful! 7. Pappardelle Al Telefono - Smoked mozzarella and fresh tomato sauce. Considering how simple this pasta was, it was really good. The smoked mozzarella was argh, too good. 8. Homademade Foccacia, breadsticks and virgin olive oil with rosemary and garlic - $3.00 (for 2 people). I felt weird getting charged for this because all the other Italian restaurants I have been to in the past have never charged for bread but... this place did. Meh. DRINK: I got Harry's Original Peach Bellini ($10) with white peach puree and prosecco. This was oh-kay for me but it might be a personal preference thing because I like my Bellini super sweet and this drink was on the tart side. I enjoyed the smoked tomato soup (which was perfect on a cold day), but unfortunately didn't love my entree. I got the pan-seared salmon with honey and lavender and lobster mashed potato. First, my salmon was undercooked and then the mashed potatoes were just.. weird. They were flavored with some sort of citrus with tiny droplets of lobster sauce around it. Phenomenal service and delicious food! We went for our anniversary during restaurant week and it was wonderful. Parking is street parking if you're lucky, but there's a parking garage around the cotner as well. The interior is very nice and the whole staff is kind, helpful and polite. Reservations are definitely recommended. We started with the tomato soup, calamari and mussels- all of which were delicious. The mussels were the highlight! Next we had the pork ossobucco over mushroom risotto and the carbonara. Hubby loved the pork, I loved the risotto, and we could pass on the carbonara- not our favorite. I came here with friends for Restaurant Week and now I'm honestly addicted. I can't speak to pricing on my review since we had a special. My coworker who I consider my personal restaurant guru recommended coming here after we already had a reservation on the books so I had high hopes. It lived up to the hype! My appetizer was the Fried Calamari. Love how lightly it was battered and fried so the taste of the squid could come through and it didn't just taste like fried breading. My entree was the carbonara pasta and OMG I need the recipe. It was so good and i didn't want it to end. Since I clearly can't get the recipe, I will end up coming here more than my pockets can handle since I live really close by. For dessert I had the creme brûlée. I was honestly full front the first two courses so I didn't eat too much of dessert, but it was still good. Everyone at my table enjoyed their overall meals. The chicken entree that was offered though wasn't really good to my friend who got it. They felt like the chicken didn't really have any flavor. Our waitress was amazing. I wish I got her name. She's the reason I got my two courses because she highly recommended them.
