A5 Wagyu rib cap
Amy J.

It's good to know my previous 5 stars holds up and that this place is still a solid 5. Service: great from start to finish. Host at the front was super friendly and personable. Our server was Raul today and he checked in on us just the right amount of times, picked up the empty plates once emptied, and he even heard chopsticks fall and came by with a new pair without us having to ask for some. Food: a solid 4.5 out of 5. Everything was quite perfect except that I thought the miso soup was especially salty today. And my mom had one strip of meat that was chewy apparently. The sashimi on ice today seemed like they were sliced a bit thinner than when we had it a year ago. Now I just sound like I'm being picky. But - everything really did taste amazing. Our drinks were well crafted. Side of rice was a 5/5 from our little one. You'd be surprised how many Japanese places don't have quality rice. Atmosphere: place is clean and welcoming. The higher ceilings and curvature of the bar is homey. All staff members had a smile on their face which makes me want to be there and it made us enjoy our food that much more. Our entire party had a wonderful evening there!

Popped in for a quick bite on a Friday night for an early dinner. The hostess/server was sooo nice! Turns out it's an all you can eat Japanese bbq (and they have sushi). I was just looking for sushi...so the menu is geared more towards the bbq as they don't have a huuuuge variety of sushi but enough. I got the mango salmon roll from the suggestion of our server and it was fresh and light .. though I didn't taste much ponzu. Then I got the side salad for $5 and I was pleasantly surprised! It was really nicely sized and it was mixed greens with a lovely vinaigrette. One biiig bummer is they don't have venting above the tabletop grills...so the place got pretty smoky and it smells like a bbq inside. Pro

Found this on Yelp and it sounded like a nice place to eat on a Sunday for lunch. I made reservations and when I arrived, I was told there would be about a fifteen-minute wait. Parking was no issue since it's located at the Long Beach Exchange food hall and is located on the outside of the food hall. My waiter advised me that Tobi Miller from The Wallflowers is a owner / partner here. Ambiance is modern, nicely decorated and spacious. We opted for the middle tier AYCE option which was recently added to their menu. We dined on filet mignon, pork belly, beef short ribs, nigiri, hand rolls, pickled cucumbers, karaage, Toro crispy rice, Shishito peppers, salad, and miso soup. Quality was solid and service was attentive. Beverages are not included but dessert of green tea ice cream is. Overall, I had an enjoyable brunch and was pleased with this eatery. After the meal it was nice to take a stroll of the Long Beach Exchange food hall.

A5 Wagyu Hangar Steak

Yelp introduced me to this place a couple of years ago when they had an event here, and I've been back seemingly every month since. It's not cheap, but it's undeniably worth every penny. The meat is tender and flavorful, and it cooks to perfection every time. My favorites are the Filet Mignon Medallions with Miso Butter and the marinated Short Ribs. The A5 Wagyu Hangar Steak pairs well with their sauces, especially the Spicy Ponzu, which complements all their meats, sushi, noodles, and rice. Their garlic noodles are a great addition. While the sushi isn't the best I've had, it's a nice option to have to accompany their meats. I've also tried their All You Can Eat option which is the right choice when you're ready to go to town. I find myself repeatedly coming back here due to its great location at Long Beach Exchange with ample parking, cleanliness, and attentive service. And, it doesn't hurt that Sosogu is right across the street from Chocolate Bash.

Overall: 3.5 Food: 4 Value: 3 Service: 4 Parking: 3 Ambiance: 4.5 I am very happy to have tried this place, but it's going to be a special occasions place for me, when I am willing to deal with slower service (more later). It seems that they are combining the best of a lot of popular restaurants (like hand rolls, brick toast, $49 AYCE with mimosas on weekends, cucumber salad, miso cod, etc). I was also pleasantly surprised that it was in the LBX Hangar, which makes it a great place to go while hanging out with friends. The ambiance is more upscale, with high ceilings and an open kitchen concept. Could see it being a nice place for business meals. Got the summer roll which was surprisingly good! Fish was fresh and the mango was soft and sweet! The dragonfruit lemonade was extremely sweet, and that's coming from a big sweet tooth. Wanted to try more things but I was already spending around $30 on a roll + a drink for lunch and didn't feel like forking over $50 for lunch. Unfortunately, the slow service put a damper on my experience. I went at the tail end of lunch on a random Tues and there were only about 3 or 4 tables at that time. I waited at my table for 20mins before my waiter came around, which made me feel some kind of way when, later, 2 other parties were seated and acknowledged within 5 mins. It took another 20mins for 1 roll to come out (the other 2 tables behind me literally just got the menu and the remaining tables were in the middle of paying/leaving so I was the only one who was waiting on food). If service is this slow during a weekday at the end of lunch time, then I can only imagine how slow it will be during rush hour or weekends, not to mention during their AYCE rush hour. Parking can also be a bit of a challenge. As I said, I came at the end of lunch so although the spots were full, many patrons were returning to their car and it was less than a 1min wait for a spot. However, the spots are a little small compared to the large SUVs and vans parked there. So if coming at a popular time, be prepared to park far or feel like you're able to scrape the SUVs parked next to you. TLDR: Would try again for happy hour or maybe if entertaining any out of town guests.

My girlfriend and I randomly decided to eat here one day that we were just hanging at the LBX and it honestly didn't disappoint. The food was good really good meat quality and a good amount of options to choose from on the menu. Really good service and the restaurant was really clean too so that made it a very good experience as well. Definitely would come back and a good choice that's not too far away!

Sosogu is a Japanese sushi and BBQ spot that's located in LB Exchange near the Hangar in Long Beach. It's down the street from the LB Airport and is in a strip mall that's loaded with good eats. I came to sosogu a few times during their grand opening; however, it came back to my radar because of their all you can eat menu offerings. We went with their middle tier AYCE menu for $59 (niku set), which featured nigiri sushi (tuna, spicy tuna crispy rice, salmon, and albacore), select sushi rolls, and a few meat options (notably filet mignon, beef bacon, short rib, pork belly, and chicken). A few sides/appetizers were also offered and served, upon request. Of these, we got kimchi, spicy cucumber, edamame, and some veggies. For $60 per person, I definitely got my fill; however, I can't say that it's a favorite AYCE spot. The beef bacon and short rib were highlights of the "niku set". Off the AYCE menu, I also think that their cocktails featuring japanese whisky are great. For me to upgrade to four or five stars (and to choose to come here over other AYCE options), there are a few things that could have been better. First, I think their nigiri has far too much rice and it was very vinegar forward. Second, the meats aren't seasoned, so there needs to be more options for seasoning, flavor, and sauce. Third, service was ok; however, if they're strictly enforcing a 90-minute time limit for their AYCE set, then I would have liked them to come around more often. Next, the griling surface on their infrared tabletop grill is small, particularly if you have a group more more then 3 persons. Lastly, though I can honestly say that I got my fill, the meat selections were just ok for me. I didn't feel that their premium wagyu AYCE offerings enticed me. My main reason for coming back would not be for their AYCE offerings or their sushi. I would come back if they had a happy hour menu and I'd come back for some of their Japanese whisky cocktails and flights.

Chef's Sushi Box Take-Out
Emily L.

I'd give this place a little more than 4 stars! I've only had takeout but the interior looks spacious and modern. 4/5 - Chef's box, definitely reminds me of a Sugarfish dupe. Everything in here was decent, nothing mind blowing. I'd order again if I want a variety. 4/5 - Sosoguud Roll. This was okay. I do appreciate the sauce on the side. 5/5 - Tuna crispy rice. Has got to be some of the best in the area, this is a must order! Even when I got it takeout it was still good and crispy. Definitely will order this again. I'd definitely like to dine-in sometime and try their other items!

first time trying out this spot, unfortunately they weren't doing their ayce, but we wanted sushi anyway. it's a nicely decorated establishment with both indoor and outdoor seating near the hangar in long beach so plenty of parking in the plaza. we came on a monday night and got seated right away! our server kris was super sweet and helpful and made it such a memorable experience. -pear lychee martini: 9/10 quite sweet of a cocktail with more notes of the pear than the lychee but still delicious and refreshing -hamachi yuzu roll: 9/10 super refreshing roll with delicious citrus of the yuzu and fresh hamachi -sosoguud roll: 8/10 huge soy wrapped rolls with lots of fresh fish and umami sauces -spicy tuna crunch roll: 10/10 a classic yet delicious roll for me, fresh minced tuna with umami sauces and crispy garlic crunch toppings -spicy garlic edamame: 10/10 always so good and addicting -chicken karaage: 9/10 nicely crispy and tender chicken with a spicy mayo dipping sauce -toro crispy rice: 10/10 super yummy minced toro with that perfectly fried crispy rice and creamy avocado and sauces with a slight kick from the jalapeños -rainbow roll: 8/10 nice refreshing roll with an assortment of different fresh fish will definitely be back especially for their ayce!

Probably one my favorite Japanese Bbq spots. This is a hidden gem. I would definitely recommend it food quality to the atmosphere & guest services are amazing. Definitely try it out.

ONE star minuses due to an extra charge that I just saw. I only ordered 1 tempura mix and a tempura shrimp. They charged an extra $15 plus $20. It should have been either or Brenda M was terrific. She was patient with us. This was our first time at this establishment. The food was good. The drinks were delicious. We sat outside. Glad we did because it felt a bit smoky when we went inside to the restrooms. The outside is clean and restrooms and restaurant is clean. We were celebrating my dad's happy heavenly 70th (rest his soul) birthday. The restaurant was so awesome. They celebrated with us with a soju shot. Such a nice touch. What we ordered 5 Sunomono Margarita 1 Tempura Mix $15 3 Lychee Pear Martini 1 Rising Sun 6 Toki-0 Old Fashioned 1 Tempura Mix $15 1 order of Just Shrimp Tempura $20 1 Yuzu Pineapple Express 1 Green Geisha 1 King Salmon Cut Roll $11

Wanted to take my wife here for dinner as a buddy of mine came here for dinner and drinks and we enjoyed it. This time around it was a different story the my had changed their menu and I felt like why can we only order 4 items for 2 people including the sides. Like who wants to just eat meat and no sides, the first time I was here they gave us a set of sides and brought out the meat we ordered. We ordered some cocktails and we also ordered some waters but for some odd reason it took 15 minutes to get those mind you it wasn't busy maybe 8 tables occupied and plenty of staff sometimes the staff were just behind the bar and talking. I finally asked the waitress about our drinks she said oh sorry the bar is behind but to be honest I don't think she rang them up because as soon as she told the bartender he began to make them. The meats were god but it was hard to enjoy as the service lacked and wish they had the older menu. I mean did the price your spending here you should be getting good service.

I'm sure many ppl made the same pun already but... omg this place was SOSOGUUUUD!!!! First time there and I can't wait to go back and try other things! Here are the cocktails we ordered: - Rising Sun 5/5 I like sweet cocktails in general, but also not too sweet either. That one had the perfect balance for me - Chai Tea Old Fashioned 4/5 you can't really taste the chai tea but overall, a solid cocktail. It's strong, I'd recommend it to Old Fashioned lovers - Martini 3/5 nothing against it, just personal preference. I'm not too much into Martinis myself As for food: - Spicy edamame 5/5 oh that one has a little kick but so worth it - Toro crispy rice 5/5 tasty but it only came with 4 small pieces - Premier set for 2 with yuzu butter shrimp, filet mignon medallions, short ribs, spicy pork, pork belly, everything was yummy! Also loved the sides: cabbage salad, crispy tofu, spicy cucumbers (that one in particular was delicious!!!), garlic noodles and shoyu clear soup (my friends thought it was too mushroomy but I liked it). - Yuzu Cheesecake 4/5 I love Yuzu so I really wanted to try that cheesecake. It was good but nothing out of the ordinary, I wouldn't go out of my way to get it Service was impeccable, loved their vibey playlist (we tried Shazaming some of the soundtracks lol) and we came here on a Saturday at 530-6pm without a reservation. We got sat right away! Parking was also easy to find at that time.

Folks should be aware this place is capable of treating you with disrespect in person, then when you mention the poor treatment in a TikTok comment, they'll respond without taking accountability and dismissing your experience. They will then ultimately block you - presumably because too many people liked your comment. You guys, that's embarrassing. You need to do better. My comment was completely respectful and an honest concern for how I was treated the one time I ventured in with a friend. Deleting feedback you don't like, customer concerns, and then further blocking those people (I hadn't written anything else. I only noticed because I clicked on the notification that someone liked my comment and saw I was now blocked) makes you look shady and guilty. I'm not a bot, and I explained a very real, possibly discriminatory experience at your bar. If anyone reading would like to know the experience: It was October 21, 2024. A Monday. I should've written this review then but I didn't have anything nice to say, and didn't want to trash this place when it seemed they were struggling due to what the bartender said. I was going through a really tough time, having just canceled my wedding about a month earlier. It was my first outing after a month+ of deep depression. My friend came to rescue me and take me out. I had been meaning to try this place since moving to Long Beach. It was fairly early in the evening, probably around 8pm or so and it was pretty slow. There was music and two couples dancing. We grabbed a table and I went to the bar to get us drinks. As I stood at the bar, some guys had come up alongside me to wait as well. The bartender looked over me and promptly took their orders. I barely had any emotion left in me at the time so I didn't care, and just waited to be next. However, I waited. And waited. And waited. The bartender seemed to be intentionally ignoring me (now the only person standing at the bar). I watched him busy himself with other drinks for the tables, for the guys, and continue to ignore me. Time ticked by and I started to wonder if I was doing something wrong. My friend kept looking over at me from the table like what is taking so long? Minutes and minutes passed as I stood there awkwardly, being blatantly ignored. After a long stretch of time, the bartender quickly said something in my direction like, "If you want to order you're going to have to go to the other end of the bar." I said, "Oh ok thank you." And walked to the other end of the bar. From this point, I was ignored and talked about (full male bar staff) without being looked at. They rudely discussed in front of me how I was standing there, and how each one of them wasn't going to take my order. It had been over a half hour at this point, and I was the only one who had been standing at the bar. It was a slow Monday night. Because I was a broken hearted loser at the time, I started to tear up. Why was I being treated like this? Am I not someone they want in their bar? Is this place not queer or woman friendly?? Why is every other person getting served, while I am blatantly dismissed? After almost 40 minutes, the bartender on that end told me he wasn't going to take my order, and I'd have to go back to the other side again. I quietly walked back over to the other side, feeling so embarrassed and just wanting to leave. It was ridiculously clear I wasn't welcome here, though I had no idea why. I remained standing there for maybe another 10 minutes. The original guy finally relented and begrudgingly took my drink order. He was standoffish at first, until he realized I wasn't upset about any of it. He started to apologize, saying he was brand new, and told me some of the staffing issues they had had that night. He seemed stressed. He recognized he had served the guys before me, and I had been ignored for way too long. He apologized again, and poured us an extra shot in our drinks to make up for the poor treatment. The drinks honestly were terrible lol, but I can only complain about so much. Plus he gave us double the alcohol, so I guess I was grateful. We left immediately after and went somewhere else. I haven't been back since. I wish I could share screenshots of my TikTok comment with the owner's dismissive reply, so you could see for yourselves whether you think that deserved being blocked. She even liked one of my reels from my page? Very odd. People are going to share the truth about their experiences at your establishment, and for you to deny that and block them is wild. You could've responded in a very different way, but you chose to be defensive and shady. That's on you.

We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. The experience was amazing. Speaking of Speakeasy! First, if you don't want to (most likely) get turned away, you will definitely need to make a reservation on OpenTable a few days before. Parking around the area was tough, but you may find a spot if you circle around the blocks. You will need to arrive early to look for parking. When you arrive, you will see the Mexican restaurant El Barrio Cantina. You will want to walk into the alley on the left, then you will see the door with a lantern on your left. Congrats, you have arrived! Knock on the door and tell them your reservation. The bar was popular. Their reservations were all full for the night. Their cocktails were amazing, creative, delicious, and Tokyo-inspired. I love their cool menu design. The bartender was friendly and made some nice recommendations. I had a Meguro River. It's creamy and pretty with floral decorations, served in a mini pot. The Okinawan Gimlet is in cool green. They even have alcoholic gummies and alcoholic shaved ice on menu. They do have a time limit of 1.5 hours seating. I can't wait to come back again.

Inside it's small, dim, and moody in the best way -- red lantern glow, low ceilings of chatter, and the kind of lighting that makes everything on the table look like a movie still. It's a speakeasy with a full appetizer-style menu, which is basically my love language. Reservations are your friend here; this place fills up fast and there's nowhere to hide. I came for the food, and the food showed up to work. The corn dogs were the undisputed MVP -- golden, crunchy, drizzled in Kewpie and tare, topped with jalapeños and dancing bonito flakes like they knew they were the headliners. The sushi was good -- fresh, well-built rolls that hold their own in a bar setting. Add in glossy glazed wings, charred corn ribs under a crispy cheese veil, and crispy rice bites stacked with spicy tuna, and you've got upscale Asian comfort bar food doing its absolute best work. Not a big drinker myself, but the cocktail menu is a whole production -- the kind of booklet you flip through just for the photography. A fantastic night out. Highly recommend.

It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

If you're looking for a spot with great atmosphere, a trendy vibe, and beautiful décor, this is definitely it. My favorite time to go is on the weekends for breakfast. I think they have some of the best breakfast options you'll find on 2nd Street. It's definitely a trendy, people-watching kind of place where you can enjoy the scene as much as the food. It's centrally located right in the heart of 2nd Street, directly across from Nick's. Between the stylish décor, lively atmosphere, and great location, it's just one of those places that has a really fun vibe.

I've been here a handful of times and I might be done. I wouldn't argue that the food is mediocre,…read morebut it's not great either. I've gotten fish and chips a bunch of times; sometimes the fish great--but sometimes it is slightly under-fried. Today I tried their fried chicken sandwich and it was not great. The menu described the sandwiches coming with pickled vegetables, but it was very plain. The brioche bun was great, but it's not the selling point. The fries oddly also always come with a teaspoon of ketchup. My biggest gripe is the service. I stopped by to have lunch with my mom. I ordered a soda before we placed our food order. While we looked over the menu, I took a few sips of the soda and finished it. My mom drank her water, and finished it. The server came back and took the order, the drinks were empty and never refilled. Whatever, NBD. However, 10 more minutes passed and I flagged down a different server and asked for a refill. (My server had disappeared). The food came out eventually, my drink was nearly empty again--no refill. The runner asked if I needed anything else after setting the food down and I again asked if I could grab a refill (the server still has not come back to the table). I looked around and he was chatting it up with a bartender leaning against the wall and giggling. Super annoying-- I'm glad the culture here means that the employees are friends and can talk and joke around. I don't need constant engagement, but you can't let drinks stay empty for lengthy periods of time. Half way done with the food, we still had empty drinks. Server never came back, runner never came back. Finished the food and sat for ten mins. Flagged down yet again another server and asked for the check. My server made his was over with the check--tips START at 25%, then 23%, then 20% Our lunch was about $70 (without the tip). This isn't McDonald's. The food was meh and the service was terrible. The cost did not make me feel like there was any value given the lack of attentiveness and quality of the meal.

DINING While Black…read more The 908 Restaurant Environment 1-5: 5 I really appreciated the ambiance and decor of the space. After enduring weeks of record breaking heat in Long Beach, this was the perfect place to land as the Summer Breeze... Makes Me Feel Fineeee again. A very well but gently lit space that still feels cozy and spacious. The outside gives no indication of how well the inside has been designed. Great for lunch or dinner dates. Noise level was low and there's no feeling of a chaotic restaurant environment. Food/Service 1-5: 4.8 I order the shrimp and lobsters fettuccine, bone marrow as an appetizer. My company ordered the lamb burger. All dishes we beautifully plated; true works of art. Neither of us had any complaints about presentation and creativity. As far as taste and as excited as we were to dig in to our food, the ONLY setback was the lack of seasoning mainly salt. I'm aware that a Chef does their best to meet the expectations of their guest. I'm also aware that meeting everyone's expectations is impossible. To confirm my advice of needing some salt in the food I patrons the restaurant twice, two days in a row. The food needs more salt and I stand solid on that opinion. The service was great and I thanked Mel for taking such great care of us. Mel is a rockstar! Diversity score 1-5: 4 The restaurant definitely appeals to diverse crowds. It reminded of the days I frequented Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster in Harlem, NY. Go again score 1-5: 5, Absolutely. I do hope I don't have to keep bothering the server for salt and pepper.
