I feel like I am constantly on the phone with them trying to figure out what is wrong with the internet and why we have "No Internet Connection" MULTIPLE TIMES a month... as I sit here typing this we have no internet service and it's been up and down literally all week. So I called and our request has been escalated and we have to wait on a call back which could be 24 hours or more. Not getting a good value out of the service that's for sure. I have had SOS Communications for years now - maybe 7-8 years. If I had written this review three years ago or longer, it could have been four stars. But the service from the company these last three years or so warrants only a single star (or less). Outages: There are service outages on a regular basis. Some of them are weather-based. Some are not. Many of them including the weather-based ones could be prevented or reduced. None of their access points have any redundant power sources, nor do they have any power backup. Therefore, any kind of power outage or 'blip' will terminate service at that access point. Topography: Their access point topography is not what you would expect if you know anything about networks. Instead of using a redundant topography such as a spoke, or mesh, or parallel topography, they have their access points configured serially - that is, one after the other. If one access point ceases working, every access point after that one also ceases working. When this happens, they dump all of the offline customers onto another nearby access point thus bogging everyone down. Access speeds: They added too many customers without adding capacity. I regularly have speeds as low as 44 kbps. Yes. That is a 'k'. It is NOT a typo. My current account is for 50 Mbps but I have never seen that speed. I get these low speeds even at off-peak times. And since I work from home in an IT field, it makes doing my job quite difficult. Customer service: They rarely check their service tickets. I have filled out service tickets that sat for weeks without any response. Recommendation: If you are a rural customer, sign up for Starlink. If Starlink is not in your area, it will be soon. read more

I can't speak to the quality of their service because the person they sent out to do the installation drove his truck into our newly sowed grass and destroyed 15' of grass and buried his tires into what is now mud. The original person that came out to tell us if we were in their service area was great. However, the person that was going to perform the installation came up with a completely different plan. They obviously never communicated with each other and its like the Right hand has never met the Left hand within their company. We recently moved to a rural area, and could not get our usual internet service providers. We didn't want to deal with satellite internet since we've heard so many horror stories about it. Enter SOS Communication! They have been amazing to us. Setting up an appointment was easy, installation was easy, and we have service even during the most windy storms. Customer service whether through FB messenger or email is awesome. I ask a lot of stupid questions and need my hand held (I need confirmation and reassurance! I can't help it), and SOS always answers patiently. Pricey compared to the fiber service we had at our previous address but WORTH IT. read more

Adding a new update. So while they have said they have done lots of work on upgrading and improving the systems the service really is crap. You would think that you might have issues with wireless service when its windy or raining or cold, but we have problems on beautiful sunshiney days to! They are not quick to fix any of their issues and do not provide proper compensation when their service is down/crippled for many days. We had SOS Communications install their system at our home on July 1, 2022. We are paying for the 30/7 service, 30 K download and 7 k upload. As of July 14, 2022, we have yet to receive over 8.4 k download through their system. Their excuse, "there are issues with the tower in Holland Tx." yet it appears they have not attempted to resolve the issue. We are out over $200.00 to SOS for a promised service they have yet to deliver. Oh, and before they say it. I understand the agreement was "UP TO 30/7" but I would have expected them to be at least a little concerned and proactive when they cannot seem to deliver even half what I am paying for. Beyond awful. I'm not sure why I gave them almost a year to prove themselves. But after weeks on end with little to no response from support, customer service, or management, I am finally done. In July of 2014 I signed up for 10x10 service. After a month or two it started slowing down to to point of unsuitability (they signed up too many people). I went until February 2015 before they were able to restore my service, and they downgraded me without my approval to 4x2, which is worse than the provider I left to go to SOS. I am now getting less than 1Mb/s down and up, and have been for over a month. They have refused to respond to service requests, and when they do, they do not follow through with promises for service. If you are looking at this service for your internet needs, you'd be better off going with an AOL dial up, DSL, ISDN, shotgun modems, or smoke signals. read more

I've been with SOS Communications over 2 years, and I'm surprised by all the negative reviews. SOS Communications is a small local company providing Line of Site wireless to rural areas where the only other option satellite. Prior to moving to my house 2 years ago, I called the 3 WISP providers in the area to verify that they could provide me internet access. I work from home, so internet connectivity was a requirement for me to move to a rural area. After I actually moved, the 2 National WISP providers told me that they had made a mistake and would not be able to provide service at my house, since it was in a valley. Rick Hughes from SOS came out, got up on my house and looked around, and said he could come up with a solution. He came back a few days later and built an aluminum tripod on the side of house near the top gable, and I was up and running. I opted for a $100 business plan 8mg down 4mg up unlimited data (0mg when it's raining!) We have had a couple thunderstorms where lightening hit the dish on the tower and it took a day or two to repair. I'll usually get an email from Rick letting me know the tower is down and and ETA on when it will be back up. I've never gotten that kind of personal notification from my previous cable internet companies. I read a lot of complaints that really don't make sense. SOS is not open on Saturday and Sunday. It's a small company, get over it. You knew this when you signed up for service. If you need 24x7 phone support, go sign up for satellite service with HughesNet. You "might" get the speeds you need to watch Netflex, but with their limited data plans it will cost you a fortune. With satellite latency, you'll never be making that Skype or Alexa call. Wireless Line of Site does not compare to cable internet. When it rains hard, internet access will do down. If the tower gets hit by lightening, the network may be down a day or two while they get it repaired. It's just the nature of a WISP provider and not a good reason to bash SOS with poor reviews. Guess what? The Weir store closes at 10pm. Are these same people complaining they have to drive into Georgetown if they need a beer after 10pm? If you expect all the niceties of town living, maybe you shouldn't be living in a rural area. That being said, some neighborhoods have been upgraded to mesh typologies to provide for tower redundancies. SOS does not implement packet shaping like your large ISP's, so you get the complete bandwidth. As a result, I can stream movies on 2 televisions and take a Skype for Business call simultaneously on only an 8mg download speed. My connection speeds do not drop in the evenings like what happens cable internet. read more

This review is based on the "New SOS" which has new employees and management in place for the past several months... Before I get to my own review I wanted to respond to Robert S.'s review. When I read it my initial thought was 'nobody can be that bad" so I picked up the phone and called the owner of SOS. The current owner and CEO of SOS told me that honestly, Robert's post was correct. Here is what happened... Matt Halsey had been working for SOS for months as a technician. He was doing a great job as a tech. He fixed intricate and complex electronic circuits, dealt with radio frequency transmissions in the challenging GHz range, and he did all of that on time, and on budget. He was so successful at the tech job that when the GM position came open they let him have it. As it turns out that was a... BIG, GIANT, HUGE MISTAKE... The same traits that made Matt such a good technician made him a deplorable manager. While Matt was very intelligent, and could concentrate on complex technical issues, and resolve them, he just could not deal with one thing in particular. Matt especially had a problem when it came to dealing CUSTOMERS who were also HUMAN BEINGS. As it turns out most of SOS's customers were human. That was his downfall. Matt moved on after a short, and for SOS a painful and costly, period of time. That was about a year ago now. The word is that Matt is back to working with printed circuit boards, rectifiers CPU's, and the like and is doing great. He has found the path to success and we only wish him well. The new SOS Wireless Internet Service we have been using for a few months now has been working flawlessly. After the virus, which affected Wireless Internet Service Providers worldwide, was excised and nuked there have been no more problems. Both my wife and I work from the home. She is a Rn. and a Certified Medical Case Manager and I am a Certified Digital Forensics Examiner and Expert Witness. We must have a steady, high-speed Internet Service and SOS has fulfilled that requirement. With no data cap we watch Netflix and Amazon.com Prime Video whenever we want. Currently we are watching the HBO series Rome as well as some of our favorite movies from the past. Mike (We have no monetary connection with SOS other than we receive discounted service for allowing them to use our Ham Radio tower. The service we receive is the same as everyone else. Constant packet loss getting up to 10% in the afternoon, always leaving a support ticket only to tell me that, yes something is wrong. No communication from the team, if there's a problem with the tower TELL ME, LET ME KNOW, COMMUNICATE PLEASE. Not knowing what's going on and getting frustrated with no updates or status on the situation is worse than knowing what's going on and not going through the hassle of gathering all the data and speed tests I need to tell them that there is something wrong. I have had instances where for days I would pay for 25mbps down and 5 mbps up and just always get 5 mbps down and 1mbps up. I have to be the person to bring it up and tell them there is something wrong, or else it's ignored. Days where I send support tickets and it just gets closed with no reply, I have to be a thorn in their back side just to get anything down. I have to pretty much get lucky to have a stable connection with no packet loss, AS IT SHOULD BE IF YOU'RE ADVERTISING "RELIABLE AND STABLE". I know that WISP can be affected by weather but even on normal days I get piss poor downloads slower than dial up. Then I have to spend my morning spam calling just to get through the support team just to have them be like fine I guess I'll answer this time. If I am going to pay 100 a month for 25mbps and 5 up, only to have like 1/5 of the month work as intended, I better get compensation for this constant interruptions. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ISP OR IF YOU WANT TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT SOMETIMES WORKS FOR A DAY OR TWO. As of writing this on Dec 2021 from 5pm CST up and still going as of now almost 11pm I have 8% packet loss with 4mbps download and somehow 7mbps upload and I'm sure it's still going to continue all the way through the night like always even during off peak horus. Literally the worst internet company ever. First off , employee called out because of " COVID ". Second schedule for installation, a technician decided to climb my fence to access the other side of my land and ended up BREAKING HIS KNEE on the job because he didn't want to walk around the fence, even after opening the gate. Extremely unprofessional and immature. The NEXT issue, probably the worst. After just two months of service, the high winds in our area bent the 50ft pole, so we had to schedule another installation, however, no one ever told us there was a $150 fee to switch out the pole that THEY INSTALLED INCORRECTLY! This is so unfair because our neighbors pole (which they've had for years) was PERFECTLY FINE. Leading us to believe that ours was clearly installed incorrectly from the beginning. I argued with the manager, TJ, to take off the fee, even after explaining that our pole just wasn't tied properly compared to our neighbors. He refused to even give a discount, and didn't understand where we were coming from. Worst customer service ever, horrible technicians, extremely over priced, $100 for 25 speed internet ??? Cmon. Do yourself a favor and go with rise broadband, this company is just over all the worst, even Hughesnet is better. read more

Do not waste your time or energy here. Because if you sign up you will be doing just that. We have been having extremely slow speeds between 4pm till 11pm EVERY SINGLE DAY for months. We subscribe to their 15 mbps plan but speed tests during those hours (4pm-11pm) range from 2 mbps to 8 mbps(on a REALLY good day). We have to watch TV with speeds of between 144-360 on our 55 inch 1080i TV. The picture is pixilated and buffering. We lose internet altogether at least 9-10 times per week, usually on Friday and Saturday. Hmm. I wonder IF the tower we are on is getting too much internet traffic during the times and days most people use it? Seems pretty obvious but "tech support" wasn't seeming to grasp the problem and offered up a "we're really sorry". That doesn't fix it. I've signed up for T-Mobile's new home internet (unfortunately it's on backorder). $50 a month for 50 mbps speeds. I also put a down payment on a Starlink Dish. Starlink speeds of over 100 mbps for $25 less that I pay SOS for unreliable 15 mbps. There are more options to those of us in the country now. Utilize them! read more

If it was possible to give 0 stars, i would. This is the worst company to deal with. When the internet is working, it is great. The problem is that it has to be working. I have given this company so many chances over the last year. Their office is only open Mon-Friday 8a-5p. Good luck getting anyone to answer or return a message. If they do return the message, it is always an excuse. They are usually working on the problem or meeting with a tech later that day. They promise to return your call. Big surprise here, but that followup usually doesn't happen. If it does happen, it is a week or two later, and not by the end of the day as promised. This company has so many issues, they can't keep up with the complaints. We have been promised comps that we have never gotten. The prices for service are a extremely lower that the others and there is a reason. read more

The absolute worse service I have ever had with an Internet company. We have had them for close to a couple of years now, but only because we don't have really any other option where we live. When we first got them everything was great. Then they got greedy and felt they needed to expand to the point that they had more customers than Internet to provide. Service started going out and speeds dropped. It now frequently goes out. This week alone it's been in and out almost every night. It went out last night (Friday) at 5:00 pm and here it is almost 9:00 am the next day and it's still down. You CANNOT get ahold of anyone in their office. They don't work on nights or weekends..or during lunch time on week days. I have left a voicemail and my husband sent an email. Their auto response was they will get back the next business day!! Unacceptable! Everything we do in our house is Internet based, even television. I also have a problem with their billing. I used to pay them through PayPal then get a late bill from them saying I hadn't paid. They took care of that problem by creating a payment place that after one payment they started automatically taking the money out of my account every month....WITHOUT MY AUTHORIZATION. I let it continue, but recently received an email from them reminding me if I'm late they will charge me a late fee! Again, worse run business I've been involved with. After being with Farm to Market for about 5 years they were charging me for speeds they couldn't provide SOS came out and informed me they couldn't get a signal I thought I was stuck with what I had. The next day the Tech called and asked for permission to try again he got the signal I have been running at a steady 3.5 to 4.0 meg speed for the last 3 weeks and happy I feel like the installation charge was a little high but the monthly rate is 20.00 cheaper for 4.0 megs than what I was paying for 2.0 megs that I never got so I recommend this company for anyone in the rural areas country living is great but has its downfalls and SOS helps make it better!!! read more

I have had SOS Communications for the past two years, and while it might not be the best of the best everywhere, its places lots of other companies are not. When you separate it from the Multi-Million dollar cable/DSL/Fibre companies, you can see just how nice of a service SOS provides.
