Just a few streets away from the beach in the Barceloneta area, this is a great stop for food before or after hitting the beaches. First off, I love that they are part of the "Slow Food" movement. Fresh, local, direct from the source to table. It makes me happy to see how it's become a global movement. RECS: -The seafood paella was delicious. ~19 euro/person but it's worth it. We went on a food tour in Barcelona and our guide said good paella should be at least 15 euro. She told us those restaurants with the "6 euro paella" are "disgusting" lmao. -The skipjack with pistachio was also nice, light and fresh -The baked pumpkin with iberian ham was interesting. Enjoyed the dish but the paella and skipjack were our favorites. Lots of other tasty dishes on the menu such as zucchi squash blossoms, oysters, fresh catch of the day but were very content with our lunch. Thanks, Yelp, for this great find!
On a quest to find some of the best paella in Barcelona, Somorrostro was a delightful surprise! Tucked behind the less touristy area of Barceloneta, this restaurant has a casual feel but serves super colorful and modern dishes. For starters, everything about this place screams hip and trendy and they aren't even forcing this! There is a great selection of modern wines and hipster beers and the menu is simple and written on a board. For starters, my group got the roasted vegetables and fried spring onions. The fried spring onions kind of reminded me of a tempura batter but they were not heavy at all. Paired with a very fiery orange sauce, I didn't think anything else I ordered could top this. But once I tried the paella, I was proved wrong! The paella (minimum serving for two people at €40) might sound a bit pricey but it was pretty big and packed with seafood! For a group of 3, we could barely finish it! I wouldn't compare it to a traditional paella, but it sure had a more tangy taste to it and the seafood was well seasoned and pretty fresh tasting! Overall, this was one of my favorite meals in Barcelona. The servers and chefs were super nice and they spoke pretty good English.I would like to come next time to get their skip jack and some of the other dishes as they looked exquisite. Guess that means I just have to fly to Barcelona again!
YUMMM fresh seafood, lots of hybrid fresh options at an affordable price YAY: - Pan con tomate: super tasty - Fish of the day: super tender, flavorful NAY: - Kimchi mushroom fritter: meh, was a bit mushy didn't enjoy this very much Overall, a pretty small hipster-feeling place but nicely tucked away from the rest of the touristic areas, but close to the beach still.
Somorrostro serves creative mouthwatering tapas! I also could not get enough of the casual decor. The waitress spoke fluent English and recommended 2.5 tapas per person so husband and I ordered 5 total, 7 including dessert! Perfect starter/sides: Potatoes with spicy sauce Fried zucchini stuffed flower The following tapas had me making indecent noises: Skipjack with pistachios and sour cream Rice with butiffara (sausage) and octopus Hubby was a bit embarrassed by my sound effects for each subsequent bite, but they were both THAT good.
Very innovative and interesting food. Open kitchen where you can see the chefs preparing your order. Most of what we tried was delicious. The skipjack with pistachios was AMAZING, order 2! Not like anything I have eaten, savory and deliciously paired fresh ingredients come together like a symphony in your mouth. The oysters with passion fruit was a miss for hubby but I loved it. We also tried the charcoal grilled seafood mix which was ok. I understand making the ingredients sing but I like some garlic and wine with my seafood, this was a miss for us both and we could not finish it. The Octopus was like rubber which was nasty. The catch of the day was good and the hen croquettes were stunning. I would recommend but order with care. Well priced for what is on offer and great service
Small, somewhat intimate place that has a great feel just off the tourist route, is a spot you should try to visit. We started with the Jack Fish which was a delicious piece of raw tuna served on a thin pistachio cracker. This was followed by the Tempura Sea Anemones with a mild lemon sauce, sliced red onions and green apple. Since our appetites aren't what they used to be, we stopped there and ordered the Seafood Paella for 2 which was loaded with fresh clams , mussels, shrimp, squid and 2 tiny langostines, very very good. With a bottle of water & wine the bill came to around $85 US. Well worth a visit.
Finally got to go here after touring the city on a hop on/hop off bus tour. Dropped off near the history museum of Catalan, we walked about half a mile through small alleyways and finally found it thanks to Apple Maps. We were there inbetween hours at 3pm so there was no crowd at all - very empty except for a few diners. The staff were very friendly and helpful in bringing out an English menu board. Ordered a variety of dishes and found they have a fair share of vegetarian dishes which were excellent! The best dishes: 1. Iberian jamon 2. "crab dont' touch my egg" was the premier dish that I still remember. Must go to place to get away from the pinxtos and common tapas places.
The Calçot was in season so we were dying to try them out! Calçot, in the Catalan language, is a type of scallion or green onion. They are like green onion with a bulbous root similar to the Chinese "red scallion heads" which are normally dried and used to accentuate flavors in various dishes. Somorrostro was chosen because they offer calçot (Catalonia green onion stalks) and they tasted really bright and fresh. Additionally, our party of two got the sausage and octopus rice (arroz de butifarra y pulpo). Butifarra sausage is a widely used in Catalan cuisine. It's made with a mixture of finely chopped pork meat - leg, shoulder or loin and bacon fat - and then seasoned with salt, pepper and other spices. We also got the"crab don't touch my eggs (cangrejo)", and fresh sea urchin (erizo de mar). The flavors for all of the dishes were spot-on. I was really excited and happy to eat the food while going through my jet lag.
This was the best meal by far that we had in Barcelona! It's a little tucked away from the main waterfront area. The assorted charcoal grilled seafood and the paella were fantastic-the seafood was so flavorful and juicy! The mussels were some of the best I've ever had. I would really recommend both dishes. The service was friendly and the sangria was good too.
MAKE RESERVATIONS. We slipped in at 6:30pm on a Monday and was the last party to get a table, but could only stay for an hour max. They started turning down everyone else who didn't have a reservation. Somorrostro is a small restaurant, tucked in an alley away near the beach. No views, but the food makes up for it. Their menu changes daily and they specialize in paella and seafood dishes. Although they're known for their paella, we wanted to try their seafood dishes as we've been having paella almost every night and wanted a break. Per our server's recommendation, we started out with the skipjack (served sushi grade) served on a bed of pistachio crackers and sour cream. MUST TRY this! My only regret was not ordering another dish ;) Another highlight was the charcoal grilled seafood. It's served on a hot square pan filled with mixed seafood (prawns, clam, mussel, conch, etc). They even provide you wet towels to wipe off your fingers after you're done eating. My only con was that the food took a while to come out. Aside from that, I enjoyed getting a taste of local seafood here and hopefully I'll get the opportunity to come back for their paella.
The paella here was outstanding. We have tried it a couple of other spots on our trip, and this one was the best. They use fresh saffron, high quality ingredients and the seafood is sweet and tender. My husband and I do t line mussels, but these were delicious and sweet, not fishy, gritty and chewy like they can be. Our server also picked out a delicious orange wine to pair with e paella and a couple of different ports to go with a chocolate dessert. We didn't care very much for the dessert, but our son ate all of it. Our 6 year old son dined with us and our server was very accommodating g and offered a hamburger, but I would say this restaurant is better for adults. It's quite small and is all seafood. We did not have a reservation, but they avecindares us on a busy Saturday. I recommend a reservation.
We came with high hopes and left with a longing in our bellies and hearts. We tried the skipjack / bonito , fried calchots (green onions) , mussels with pickled daikon and black garlic tapas. They were ok, but a bit light for our tastes and smaller than usual for that price. Nothing jumped out as a super delicious dish. We ordered paella and were also a bit disappointed. I have fond memories of my mom's paella and this wasn't quite up to par, in our opinions. The rice was a little too chewy, the sauce missing some depth of character and the seafood, while plentiful, was a bit over cooked and missing clams. The wine selection. was good, but every white wine we tried was quite dry and lackluster. Maybe that's just how they like wine in Spain, but we weren't impressed. It wasn't a bad experience, but it wasn't great. For those prices and reviews, I'd expect more. Maybe it was just an off day or maybe it wasn't our kind of place, so our search continues for the best Paella outside of mom's place.
Amazing. Incredible. I had the skip jack tuna with pistachio and sour cream, almond cream with squid surprise, zucchini flower with goat cheese, and burrata, cocoa & figs bread. Everything was delicious. The almond cream might have been a bit too salty though the actual squid was great. It is pricy, meant to be tapas / shared small portions, and the menu seems to change often with a few staples. I would definitely recommend if you're looking for a smaller but high quality meal close to the beach.
Somorrostro is a popular, modern tapas bar in Barceloneta with creative dishes meant to be shared! Coming in for dinner with no reservation, we got a seat at the bar and got a full view of the open kitchen. We started with the zucchini flower stuffed with cheese and deep-fried, but this popular tapa was quite disappointing, as it turned out quite greasy and was not particularly distinct in flavor. To share, we then ordered the seafood paella, which was prepared right in front of us with short grain rice, broth, tomatoes, and octopus, shrimp, clams, and mussels. The paella was fresh and delicious, with al dente rice grains that were perfectly coated with the saffron-infused broth and that had formed a sticky, crispy crust on the bottom of the pan! I was impressed by the fresh flavors of the food here and would definitely return to try out more of their other creative dishes! read more
This place was amazing. We loved everything we ordered from apps to dessert and drinks! If I am ever back in the area would totally come again. I do think reservations are important here. We made a reservation so we had no problem but watched many people get turned away due to no reservations. read more

Just. Wow. Don't leave Barcelona without trying this location. Ease into the meal by asking for the top 3 suggestions and begin adding from there. We loved every bite. Literally. Absolute MUST: Skipjack with Pistacio and Sour Creme. read more

Hubby wanted to try this place when we weren't able to make reservations the first time around. We arrived for an early dinner, and were the first group to be seated for the evening. It's a small, but cozy little place that looks like a mini villa in the middle of the city. We had the entire place to ourselves the first half of our meal. They even had a high chair for our daughter. The menu is presented on a blackboard that is easy to read. Items are erased as they sell out of it. We tried a few dishes, and the portions are definitely on the smaller side. The Skip Jack was basically two bites of fresh fish and similar for the Eel. The textures complemented each other with the fish and the cream and some element of crunch. My favorite was the Calcots in Tempura while Hubby loved the simply oven baked Shrimp from Barceloneta. Each dish was presented beautifully. For dessert we tried the Almond Milefuilles. It was a different take on the traditional dessert with an interesting texture that made up the layers. read more

This place was really delicious. It was just far enough from the bustle of the beach in Barceloneta. The menu was delicious and I wanted to eat everything. We had 5 dishes: the skipjack with pistachios and sourcream The duck with passion fruit. Brandada with eggplant and figs. aubergine tempura with honey. & Crab "dont touch my eggs." The waitress was extremely helpful, and it was probably my favorite meal in Barcelona. There is plenty of space in the restaurant, but I didnt see outdoor seating. The food was very reasonably priced and plated beautifully. It was around 52€ for 2 people with beer and dessert. I left extremely satisfied and ready to eat there again, the next time I got hungry. read more

Stumbled across Somorrostro while on a business trip in Barcelona thanks to handy, dandy Yelp and decided to check it out after reading some of the reviews. I'm a sucker for seafood, tapas, and sangria -- what can I say? Somorrostro is seriously the epitome of high-end flavors in a low-key setting. The staff was incredibly helpful and walked me through an extensive tapas menu, and the food was exactly what I needed after a long and rough day of air travel. Highlights from my solo dinner there included the octopus with Spanish chorizo and the uni, although with its proximity to the ocean something tells me all of the seafood served here would be amazing. I'm not sure when I'll be in Barcelona next, but you can bet that I'll be paying Somorrostro a visit (or two or three) when I am. read more

This was a nice experience. The atmosphere is peaceful. The staff members are pleasant and the ingredients are high quality. They take a lot of time and care for playing and the dishes were beautiful. The food is good but not revolutionary in terms of flavor. The sangria however is incredible. The paella is worth the wait and the the burrata dessert dish is light, refreshing, and decadent without being overly sweet. It may not be at the top of my list when I return to Barcelona but I would go back and would tell others to check it out as a pleasant secret near the water read more

When in Barcelona, do yourself a favor and visit Somorrostro. This restaurant is everything you would want from a restaurant in Barcelona: a cozy ambiance, a variety of delicious tapas, and a selection of local wines. My wife and I started our dinner with the Iberian Ham and Flat Bread with Tomato. The ham was heavenly and the bread was nicely toasted and topped with fresh flavorful tomato. Next we tried the Skipjack with Pistachio and Sour Cream, which our server indicated was the restaurant's specialty. The sushi grade skipjack was served raw over a crunchy pistachio cracker and creamy sour cream and topped with a lightly salty soy sauce. It was a perfect mixture of complimenting flavors and textures and definitely a must order. Next we had the Seafood Paella which was some of the best paella I have ever had. The rice was lightly crisp, savory, and briny and topped with a generous portion of fresh flavorful seafood including mussels, clams, and shrimp. Finally we finished the meal with Crema Catalana. The dessert was similar to a crème brulee: a lightly sweet custard cream with a crisp burnt sugar topping. It was a great way to end the meal. read more

Seriously and hands down the best meal I had in Barcelona... ever, actually, lets not restrict this to a country or city... THE BEST meal I have had whilst dining out in recent memory. We simply asked the waitress to chose from the tapas menu for us, we were 3 and willing to try anything/everything... which is pretty much what we did, I'd recommend it as a strategy. By the end of the meal we had had everything, it was all excellent, from the sea urchin (a bit odd and sweet but worth trying) to the shrimp they didn't put a foot wrong. At the end, with 3 grown men happily sated and having drunk our fill, the bill was less than 170 euro, brilliant value and definitely worth seeking out of you are in the city. read more
They have various tapas. Lots of seafood options, and I am glad we chose those because they were delicious and fresh seafood. Great service...caters to tourists. They have a menu in Spanish and another in English if needed. Sangria is also a must try here! read more

Excellent hidden gem away from the usual touristy areas of Barcelona yet still in close proximity to the beach.. Catch of the day absolutely amazing.. I also had their potatoes with sauce already put on top and i think that is how people should try potatoes if they order... read more
Wow, I wish we found this spot earlier in our stay in Barcelona (although we had fantastic food elsewhere as well). The best culinary ending. The area it is in (Barceloneta) felt like "Spain" to us. I wanted to explore it more, but alas, will save that for the next visit. We were a little worried they may be too busy or we'd have a wait based on the previous reviews but we got a table right away. Menus are written on big blackboards (I liked this practice throughout Europe) in English and Catalan. We tried the duck rice, goat cheese filled zucchini flowers, patatas bravas, scallops and the Iberian ham plate. Every morsel was devoured. We were blown away by everything. Favorites were the duck rice and zucchini flowers which we'd never had. Although fried, they were so light and delicious. Wine menu is great and they are helpful with making suggestions based on what you like. Service was excellent. I wanted so badly to try the plate of chocolate/bread/olive oil/salt but we literally had to run out of there when we realized the last train in Barcelona ran at midnight. Oops! They are opened every day from 1pm until midnight. You must make this a stop if you are in the city. Not far from the beach and off the over-beaten tourist path. Five Full Stars. read more
This place was and still one of my favorite food spots from my trip to Barcelona. Definitely get the octopus with Spanish chorizo--it was so good and the crispy bits of chorizo added a nice smoky flavor to the whole dish. The Crab, don't touch my egg was also really flavorful. It's a fried soft shell crab with a poached egg and salmon roe, but the broth that it comes in is great. We also got the paella (minimum order for 2 people at 14 euros each) and that was pretty good as well with plenty of small clams and mussels, and there were delicious bits of crispy rice stuck to the pan that we scraped up. Bonus: they clearly get a lot of tourists so the waitresses spoke English pretty well and they had a chalkboard menu that was all in English too. Cyndy's Bottom Line: A wonderful Barceloneta neighborhood hidden gem serving inventive delicious tapas. *Grilled seafood - a beautifully display of seafood. Grilled to perfection. *Crab "don't touch my egg" - a tempura soft shelled crab with a poached egg, ikura fish eggs and red onions. Break the egg and eat. Deliciouso! I have to add my 3 cents in on this one. The kitchen here is great, and almost all dishes rate high in the 4 to 5 range. Because they cater to tourists, prices are a bit high, but overall, we felt that a 5 star food quality was delivered. The most interesting thing is there is such an assortment of fresh shellfish here, that's their core. For us Bonita with pistachios crust, and cream cheese spread underneath was a winner, an awesome fusion of flavors. As was the duck, grilled shrimp, mixed shellfish, and finally pork tartare. Amazing, fresh and inventive. My kids ate this food faster than candy. Service put this place over the top for us, rarely is a small house, small plates restaurant highly attentive here in Europe. A major plus for us here, very good and probably getting better, because the fine lady who served us seems to know extremely well how to run the front of a restaurant. A real manager, and she speaks perfect English, but of course preferring you try your Spanish. A lot of mid priced restaurants in Europe are so so in this category, no real service floor management. We interacted with the staff quite a bit which probably helped our service level. Definitely worth it, if you want some fusion or even a classier shellfish rich paella. Head in to the heart of barceloneta for the Somorrostro that's food not beach. Yum! read more

Really good seafood plates in a nice sit down restaurant. It is located near the Barceloneta area and has access to some really fresh seafood, and it shows in the food they serve. The shrimp, mussels, and cockels, and catch of the day(white fish) were all cooked amazingly well. The eggplant sashimi was a miss - while it's what they said (uncooked eggplant), it didn't taste amazing. However, the plating was well done, and the couscous it came with was very savoury. The Padron peppers, garden tomatoes and zucchini hearts were also great, but definitely not as amazing as the seafood dishes. Although the portions are somewhat small or tapas sized, the prices are reasonable and we ended up ordering about eight different dishes and a bottle of wine for under 100€. The coolest thing is that they bring you a giant (English menu available as well) menu to your table for you to order from! read more

Food: 3.5/5.0 Service: 3.0/5.0 Value: 3.5/5.0 Decor: 3.0/5.0 Overall: 3.5/5.0 I found this place to be good but a letdown after getting slightly worked up by yet another 4.5 Yelp rating. This is a tight little tapas spot on a side street which I was a fan of, and the menu was solid, with everything from fried sea anemone to duck magret to monkfish liver. (The menu was also literally written on a solid black board 3-4 feet tall which I thought was great, and came separately in both English and Spanish versions.) Unfortunately, taste was a little lacking, with several of the ingredient combinations a bit questionable or borderline flavorless. Not bad at all and totally worth going, but just not worthy of getting assigned so many pointy shapes. Pricing was reasonable at roughly Eur 8-12 each post-VAT, which is not great on a per-calorie basis given the small size of several items, but good on a per-unit work basis (do note their menu prices are pre-VAT, which I thankfully noticed in several prior reviews as such a surprise would admittedly have pissed me off). The waitstaff spoke decent English. I say skip the paella and do 2-3 plates per person if you're reasonably hungry. read more

Awesome! Yelp delivers again! A must while in Barcelona if you are a foodie or mildly adventurous diners. I am mildly adventurous, and my wife will try anything. Service was great. Small restaurant. Cool decor. Great feel of the place. Extremely fresh ingredients. Every element from ingredients to preparation to combinations to presentation were fabulous. We ate: Sautéed Wild mushrooms, blue fish with quinoa & mushrooms, cod fish brandada with ratatouille, flat bread with tomato. All spectacular! Deserts - apple tatin and tartlets with quince. Both were scrumptious. I am taking a very happy girl home tonight! read more

Risotto was WAY under cooked. Ratatouille was just salsa on kale chips almost. The food was way underwhelming. For the price this was awful. One star because our waitress was very kind. read more

Just traveled for 2 weeks throughout southern Spain and this wasHands down the Best tapas in barcelona! Great atmosphere, amazing menu, excellent service! Everything they recommended was excellent. Highlights were the dorado, dumplings and gambas! Perfecto! read more

We wanted to go to a good seafood restaurant and searched here on Yelp and then this restaurant came up. We were a bit sceptic because of the size and where it was situated, but we had a really lovely dinner and the food was so lovely. The atmosphere in the restaurant was autentic and the waiters was really nice and helpful. There was not noicy like in many other tapasbars in Barcelona. Next time I come to Barcelona I will for sure visit it again and also recommend it to others. read more
By far the favorite meal from our 4 days in Barcelona. Definitely order the Paella. So incredible!Our tour guide said to find a good paella it that takes 30-40 minutes to prepare, is served to a minimum of 2 people and there are no pictures on the menu. This place checked all 3 boxes! The service was outstanding the the restaurant was so adorable. They had all the tapas written in English on a chalk board which was nice touch! Having traveled on from Barcelona, we regretted not stopping in for one last round of paella! read more
