I gave 5 stars for quality of service, drinks, and the patio. However very disappointing selection of vegan food, especially since the owner himself is vegan. I'm updating my review.... I'm highly disappointed. We called today to ensure brunch was vegan friendly.. we were told no. I go here like every week omg and for one thing only: DUCK FRIED RICE!!!! I literally dream about it. Although once my egg's yolk was broken and fully cooked and once my rice was crunchy and not great, overall it is my favorite dish and I order it for my main course. I've also tried: - pork belly buns: yum 9/10 - pork chop: I don't really like pork chops but my friend got it and it was goood 8/10 - a salad with a name I forgot but it was kinda southwest? We added carne asada & no complaints 8/10 - zaka bowl: friend got it. Wondered into this joint after walking around Memphis looking for something with good drinks and good food (surprise! It's rare in Memphis). Over all it was good. Service was good and the salad I has was completely on point. I was disappointed they didn't have a brunch menu. A good gastropub so always do brunch on saturday and Sunday. read more

The service was bad. The service has always been bad. The food is mostly bland and mediocre, incredibly uninspired gastropub fusion. I just can't imagine any reason to actually choose to eat here. Just paid fifty dollars for two burgers that were burned and some Mac and cheese that was ok. It's just a place that feels like no one really cares about anything that's happening. 3 of us stopped in for dinner. They were out of the Reuben Egg Rolls and a key ingredient for the cocktail I wanted, so that's not a good start. We all shared the Duck Fried Rice (Amazing and got another order), Side of Mac N Cheese (pretty good), Fried Avocado (I'd skip it), Ahi Tuna Rice Balls (good but severe lack of tuna), Chicken and Waffles (Good) and a few cocktails (which lacked flavor and tasted watered down). Even the popcorn which people rave out was just popcorn with some stuff dusted on it. It wasn't fresh at all. I'm not sure if I'd return if I went back to Memphis. Most of the food we ordered was just ok and reasonably priced, brussel sprouts were good. The reason I am giving 2 stars is I ordered a fried bone-in pork chop with side of gouda mac n cheese. Got the dish but somehow the tiny porkchop had no bone and was dry as leather. The waiter was a nice guy trying to claim that somehow the bone was lost in the process and asked if I wanted to send it back. I tend to not send food back not to mention it was so small that by the time I tasted it and gave a bite to my date to taste(Misery loves company) it was half gone. The gouda mac n cheese that i thought was a cant miss, missed, so bland. The $18 dish was something you would get at a local diner for 8 bucks and certainly couldn't have been prepared any worse. read more

There are so many wonderful things to say about SOB...I don't know why I haven't written a review before. To me - when I think of decent bar atmosphere with good food and a casual setting...I think of SOB. Think Bardog with no smoke and Local with more consistency. The staff is always on top of things and the food is consistently delicious. My favs are the chili, brussel sprouts and seared ahi. I'd skip the chicken and waffles here....a little to oily tasting. They also tend to have a Yelp check-in deal - which always sweetens the deal! read more

South of Beale is arguably my favorite Memphis gastropub. The menu is eclectic and very good, although some of the choices can be a bit salty at times depending upon who's in the kitchen. The corned beef egg rolls and the duck fried rice are both must-try items. The kettle corn they serve at the bar is evil, in a good way. I'm powerless to stop eating the stuff. It's often counterproductive for them, because I fill up on that and don't order any real food. They also feature a fine selection of local and regional craft beers. My only real complaint is that because it's small and because of the acoustics, it gets EXTREMELY loud when it's crowded. read more

The popcorn served before the meal is incredible, it has several spices but seems like cinnamon and brown sugar steal the show, I love it. The burger is exceptional as well as the chicken curry. I was pretty disappointed with my first visit here. I've heard good things about it and really appreciated the fact that the menu items all have an interesting and tasty twist. But my sangria was waaaaay more ice than sangria (especially for the price) and all 3 of our burgers were charred on the outside. My burger and the burger my kids shared was properly cooked in the middle, but my husband's burger (which was equally as charred on the outside) was pretty red in the middle. Their homemade chips and avocado dip are amazing, and the sangria tasted great. But all of us had the taste of charred burger in our mouths and smell on our hands after eating there. Considering there was only 1 other table of people when we were there, it's not like the kitchen was slammed to have made a cooking mistake like that. read more

I know that one star seems rather extreme, but so was our visit! I was so excited to eat here and to try the Jake and Coke Bread pudding! My husband and I walked in with our two children, 6 years and 10 months. They did say "Hi" and told us that we could sit wherever we liked. I asked the lady for a high chair. Her snooty response? "OH! We don't have any highchairs." Obviously, I can't recreate the exact tone. I overlooked it and we made adjustments. The place was empty. Im assuming it was due to our arriving before 4pm. I thought, "Great! We should get our food pretty quickly!" We were starving, and we had been in the car for hours with the kiddos. It was over 15 minutes before we got our first drinks. The server gave us all a water to drink as well, but he never offered my son the opportunity to order something else to drink. My husband and I both ordered a drink from the bar following the server's, Spencer was his name, not so enthusiastic explanation of the happy hour specials. I commented on his overly quiet tone to which he responded, "I'm sorry, I'm just really tired today." I can appreciate being tired, but I have worked in customer service for over 10 years. Your lack of sleep is not your customers problem. I thought this was very unprofessional. After our drinks finally came, we ordered our appitizer. We ordered the Reuben Fries. They were pretty good, but took almost 20 minutes to come out. We are at 35 minutes at this point, and he has yet to take our order for our entrees. We did, of course, have the bowl of popcorn they offer. It was stale. My husband ordered the SOB Burger with handcut fries ($12), I ordered the Pan-fried pork chop with gouda mac-n-cheese ($18), and my six year old ordered the Fried Catfish and chips ($12). We also ordered a seperate order of green beans for our 10 month old. There is not a kids menu offered here. Our appitizer was on happy hour special for $6, and our drinks were $4 and $5. About 30 minutes later, a little over an hour total time now, our entrees emerged from the kitchen. I noticed immediately that the bun for my husband's burger was burnt. Not a good start. The mac-n-cheese was pretty good, but my pork chop was so over done. I took one bite and could hardly chew it. I didn't touch it after that. The burger was over done, and the fries on my husband's and son's plates were over done, under-seasoned, and cold. The green beans that we order for the baby were way over seasoned and borderline under-cooked. Im aware that a slightly crisp veggie is desirable, but some of them were more than just slightly crisp. If this is the norm for their green bean side, I would expect the server to say that it might not be a good choice for a child under 1. Maybe I was already very irritated at this point. The server eventually came back and asked how our food was. I told him about the pork chop, and he did offer another one. However, when I responded with, "I would prefer to not wait another 30 minutes," he said, "Oh ok, I understand." My company would have been done eating and ready to go by the time I got another one. We let him know of the other issues, and at this point he simply apologized and went on his way, never offering to correct the other problems. My husband did eat his burger, but it was unenjoyable. The server returned a little while later and asked if we would like for him to take our plates. I gestured at mine and my husband's plates and said, "Sure, we are finished." My son was still eating his fish. It was the best thing on the table. The homemade tartar sauce was very good as well. My husband and I were talking and my son taps me on the arm and says, "Mommy, I wasn't done, and he took my food." Absolutely ridiculous. He was clearly not finished, with half a plate of food left on his plate. The server returned and I informed him of the problem. He then let us know that he would take mine and my sons entree off of the ticket. This was something at least. Taking the charge of helps correct the bad food, but it doesn't correct the bad service, and it certainly doesn't put more food in my child's stomach. I still hadn't tried what I had come for, the Jack and Coke Bread Pudding. Reluctantly, I ordered it. It was ok, but just tasted like a regular bread pudding. Over all the food was very disappointing with a couple of okay things. Our ticket came, and yet again, I feel like I have to tell the server how to do his job. He removed only $15 from our order. Let's thinks back to the cost of mine and my son's meals ($18 and $12). That would be $30. It was corrected, but if I wouldn't have looked over the check, they wouldn't have said a word. Overall, I was very disappointed. With their prices being as high as they are, the food and service should be wonderful. Our food was bad, and our service was worse. This is not a family friendly place. I will not likely return. Eating out should be enjoyable, not exhausting. read more

I want to love SOB. I do. I've been 3x now and every time it's w middling experience. The menu LOOKS great but the food that lands on my table Always fails to come up a bit short. From the overly greasy duck patty melt (even for a party melt), the soggy flavorless fries, to the remarkably unremarkable "pulled" (looked chopped) chicken BBQ sandwich. It's not bad, but it's never great, which is a bit of a shame. I'll continue trying to give it a shot though.... Because I Want to love SOB read more

I really want to like South of Beale (SOB). Here's why: great drink selection, most food items seem made from scratch with fresh ingredients, and they make an effort to denote veg and g/f items on the menu. But it's an incredibly mixed bag. Invariably, the service has been slow on the three visits I've had (two lunches and one late-night snack). Food: The fried avocado I loved so much the first time that I insisted we order it on the second visit? It was met with "meh" at our table the second time around because the avocado was cold and the sauce over-vinegared. My husband had a downright scary experience with a fish and chips he described as "mushy" (haven't we all seen enough Kitchen Nightmares to know what THAT means?), but the bar pie they brought out as a replacement was decent. The gouda mac and cheese is pretty one-note -- needs some onion or garlic or at least one other, stronger cheese to make it sing. Salads have always been fresh, well-compsed, and dressed perfectly. Overall: I guess I'll go back again, and hope for more consistent service and quality. read more

A gastropub with some Southern flare. The minute you walk in you're brought out free flavored popcorn. The flavors change daily. I'm quite partial to their cinnamon and garlic popcorn. Sometimes this will be the sole purpose of my visit just so I can have some of it with my beer of choice. Their beer selection is pretty good. They have local micro-brewed beers from Bosco's and Ghost River, your typical imports and exports, and a full service bar. You can always count on there being a game on the televisions, and local patrons just hanging out at all times of day. This is not a really touristy type of place, which I appreciate because it's still downtown on South Main but away from all the hustle and bustle of Beale. Their food is a little better quality than your typical bar food. The environment of the place is quite quaint as well. Unlike majority of downtown establishments, SOB does has a well-lit parking lot right beside the place for costumer parking. Beware though. They do tow if you're not dining in with them. This is an ongoing occurrence especially during South Main's Trolley Tour. read more

This place is always high on my list when I'm downtown around lunch or dinner. I enjoy the use of fresh and seasonal ingredients. I've tried several of their burgers and really enjoyed all of them. It's a casual cool place to grab dinner before heading to the Orpheum. Oh and the bar is pretty great too. They make a mean gimlet. The two-star rating of "Meh. I've experienced better." is the perfect way to describe my recent experience with South of Beale. I tried SOB several times when they first opened and had decent experiences, at best, each time. The best thing about each experience in the past was that the wine was always flowing and their small plates were portioned and priced well. But it's been a while since I have ventured downtown so I thought I would give it another try. While heading to an event with my mom, who is a chef and foodie, I thought to myself this would be perfect for her to try! I have heard so many rave about it over the past year, so I thought that maybe they had worked the kinks out since early on. We each ordered a glass of wine. The service and prices were spot on. Our mouths watered as we read down the menu, but settled on an order of the brisket egg rolls and fried avocados since we were short on time. They arrived quickly, but not before a bowl of seasoned popcorn, which was yummy! I was personally disappointed by the lack of flavor in the egg rolls. And I expected much more of the avocados since there were so many great flavors involved (panko crust, creamy avocado, tapenade and balsamic glaze). The flavors didn't combine well and just felt like they were thrown together. The tapenade was nothing more than a few chopped spanish olives and I couldn't taste the balsamic in the drizzle at all. If you are looking for atmosphere or a couple of drinks, SOB is a perfect local, downtown spot. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it for appetizers and I probably won't be coming back to test the dinner menu. read more

SOB is small but good. My best advice for dinner after 5 is to make a quick reservation on OpenTable. Its fairly easy to grab a seat at the bar, but if a large party or lots of reservations come in on a Thursday or Friday, you're stuck until those groups clear out. To the food - love it every time I go. Most recently, I had the chicken and waffles and I must say, best C/W dish I've had in Memphis. The waffles have a strong flavor of cinnamon and nutmeg, which makes them sweet and makes you feel like you're eating at the holidays. To the drinks - also good, especially at happy hour. read more

I enjoyed this place twice this year and twice last year. Always a great time, fresh creative dishes, appetizers and a good beer list. Along with wines. Specials nightly, good fish dinners. the sides probably could be eaten as a meal. For instance I ordered the "fried rice" appetizer and it was big enough for a meal, it was tasty and came with a fried egg on top. I also had the "rabbit sausage", fantastic! the popcorn they serve you as a snack is like "crack"! So good!!! Now the service was great, two knowledgeable bartenders, both named Dan, make sure they show you the toothpick trick. I will make this a stop every time I am in Memphis read more

I love my bartender Chris. He suggested....he encouraged me to try the summer thyme drink and it was amazing. We ordered the truffle fried and fried rice with an egg on top. Yum yum!! The duck fried rice with 5-spice seasoning can be my go to meal f-o-r-e-v-e-r...next I ordered the crispy salmon with maple brussel sprouts. The salmon was in the top 1% of the salmon dishes I've had in my lifetime. It was cooked to perfection. The accompanying brussel sprouts tasted like candy! It stuck to my teeth but I couldn't stop eating it. We were 3/3 until dessert. Do not order the peach cobbler unless you are on a liquid diet. The food here was fantastic. We got there late after a showing of Hamilton so there was almost no one there. I honestly wasn't expecting much beyond basic bar food, but was absolutely thrilled with the selections we chose. The duck fried rice was incredible and the General Tso's cauliflower made me never need chicken again. The food really stands on its own merits. Having come here for a delicious yet low-key dinner the last time we were in Memphis, we stopped in on our more recent trip for some snacks on Sunday afternoon. One overall comment: I wish their brunch menu was bigger. We kind of wanted some appetizer, snacky things, but those weren't really available on Sunday afternoon. We ordered food anyway. I started my meal with a French Kiss, and I HAVE to try and replicate this drink at home. It was SOOOO good. Champagne, St. Germain and Pomegranate Liqeur combined for a perfectly refreshing drink after we'd been wandering around on a hot day. I worried the St. Germain would make it too herbal-ish, but it blended it for a simply refreshing concoction. I loved it! For my meal, I got the crispy pork cutlet salad. This was unique, but not quite awesome. I loved the idea of crisp pork combined with blood oranges, plums and Sriracha honey, but there just wasn't enough dressing, making for a kind of dry combination. The bf got a burger, which was good and came with some tasty homemade chips. We also split some grit fries, which were awesome. So, even though this meal didn't blow me away, I'm giving my review 4 stars, because I still love the cozy wood atmosphere, the inventive menu, the cocktails, and the friendly service. Totally disappointed this time. We made reservations. walked in amd it was empty but asked if I had a reservation. Which is cool, but the place was dead, so... I checked in with Yelp and it had the 10% off food. I was told that they are no longer doing that....ok, well take it off....no biggie. We came here bc of our prior visit, not bc of the discount. We ordered spinach queso dip. The chips were almost stale and the queso was ok. The spinach tasted like canned spinach. We were not that impressed, but hungry travellers, we ate. I asked if they could do a lettuce wrap for a GF burger. Nope, they shread the lettuce. So, there really was only 3 things on the menu under entrees. My daughter decided to get the appetizer nachos with a side of mexican corn. Not impressed...the chips again almost stale, there was not enough toppings per chip ratio and at $11, I would expect better. The mexican corn was $5 and you can easily taste it was from canned corn. They did dress it up with fresh onions, cilantro and cojita. It was ok and really not bad, but the canned corn taste threw it off. Not worth $5 at all. I decided the shrimp and grits, again GF option, it was $16. It had shrimp and andouille sausage. Highly disappointed. It had no flavor and very bland, I added hot sauce, but still very bland. It was also luke warm when it came out. My husband ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich. He said it was good, he would put it above buffalo wild wings. But the fries came out barely luke warm. My son had the duck sandwich, he said it was ok but was also lukewarm and his fries were the same as my husbands. We were sad bc this was our stop off while in town or driving through.
