There is nothing about this place that disappoints! I have been to Smittys often and every time I love it more and more! Ian is a fabulous server and took great care of us the whole night. Their Rutherford Merlot is to die for and I have cravings for their creamed spinach since the first time I tried it. We held a birthday dinner there for me last night and I have to comment on Manuel. Manuel is one of the hardest working people that I have ever been helped by at any restaurant. While everyone at Smittys is on their game, Manuel was so on top of everything as far as taking dishes away, filling water glasses, asking us if we needed anything, etc. Love love love this place! read more

We got a table with a new waiter who's getting trained from another guy who didn't introduced himself but interrrupted to correct his trainee's mistake right in front of us. That was not cool but we can pass that. But the food & presentation was bad. We asked the steak medium, it came well-done. The berry salad was "dirty looking" with berries all mushed up staining the spinach with dark colors. It was so unappetizing... I used to love coming here, now I don't know if I'll go back. Maybe they have brand new kitchen staff too? I noticed that all the restaurants I used to love keep disappointing me, maybe I need to venture out to new places read more

stay away!! They do not honor reservations. Just when you think that you have a Sat. Night dinner planned they call and say oh there was a glich and you are out of luck. No way to treat customers. read more

Been here many times, especially like sitting outside in the back. This evening we were upfront on the patio, and it's just toooooo dark; couldn't even read the menu with the phone, so our waiter handed us a flashlight. Add a small candle or two to the tables-it will improve the ambiance as well. read more

I'm updating my review for Smitty's Grill. After speaking with the manager about this awful dinner, he fully refunded our order. I must say that was really decent and we'll try ordering from them again. read more

Very nice atmosphere, dim lighting. The service was excellent and the food was very good. A little pricey, but food was worth it. We ordered the shrimp salad, beef dip, meatloaf, and something else I can't remember. I would definitely come back. read more

I have been a regular at Smitty's Grill ever since I moved to Pasadena a few years ago. The food is excellent, especially their homemade potato chips. The prices can be a little better, but it is very compatible to similar restaurants in the area. What makes this place better is the service. Make sure to ask for Judith. One of the friendliest people I have ever known. Thanks for the excellent service and great food. read more

If you want to have a dinner and go straight to bed, this is your place. I had the meatloaf and mac & cheese and I was down for the count. Everything on the menu is tasty. The eating atmosphere is very very clean. read more

Office Christmas Party at Smitty's.... the overwhelming comment from all the staff.... "The best Christmas Party we have ever had!!" The outdoor setting was warm, cozy, and private so our laughter and fun was uninhibited. The service was without error. Our servers and bussers were timely with the food, and always nearby for any extras that were needed. The food was excellent... I had the Roasted Chicken.. it was cooked to perfection, and fresh from the oven to the table. This was not your typical large party restaurant, where the food is served a little cold, and rushed... Not at Smitty's, the food was served as if i were the only one in the restaurant. We spent three hours at lunch and from the beginning to the end it was the BEST!! Kelly & Small CPAs LLP read more

Yup! 4.5 stars!! I can not complain about this place. We both came out happy and full! This wasn't a planned evening but somehow, everything went smoothly Originally we had our hearts set on Palette + Wine in Glendale, however, trying to get a hold of a live person on the line to make a reservation seemed impossible and essentially, it never happened. So we came here instead, without a reservation and totally unplanned. The hostess was remarkably friendly and attentive. She complimented my blouse, and wondered if I bought it at Anthropology, as it was the same one that she was eye balling. I was like, "yeah, just go buy it! i did!!" Our waitress was even nicer than the hostess. She really liked that we were happy and laughing and younger than the other patrons at the restaurant. She read off the specialties and away we ordered. I had the Seared Ahi Tuna and mashed potatoes-he had the rib eye steak with split pea soup and a baked potato. We ordered creme brule for desert. We both finished our entire plates and smiled and chatted gratefully through out the dinner. Two young patrons sat next to us, total yelpers, who anxiously took pictures of their food and took notes on how was cooked when they ordered. Me, personally, I am too embarrassed to sit with pen and paper and write down my dishes ordered. So I wing it when it comes to yelp, but it isn't a bad idea to do so...I'm dying to tell you exactly how good our food was but lack the exact wording of preparation. Anyways, if you get a chance, check Smitty's out. It was definitely not bad for a classy and chill dinner on an early Sunday evening. read more

This is a great place to go if you have no idea what you want to eat. The variety in food allows you to choose anything from Prime Rib, meatloaf, to burgers and sandwiches. I work one block away so I dine here frequently. It's also a favorite of the "old-money" South Pasadena/San Marino folks who roll up in their old-school Mercedes coupes, and business folks. The Cheese Bread appetizer is one of my favorites. They smother the bread with a special sauce mixed with diced onions. The cornbread is also fantastic and neat because they serve it in the iron skillet. But be careful because it's extremely filling. The Smokehouse Burger is the favorite among all my co-workers and friends. This really is a burger for burger-lovers. Aside from the fact that it's truly gigantic, the real appeal with this burger is the "Rattlesnake Sauce" which is a BBQ sauce that's a bit herby, tangy, and sweet at the same time. It really is a unique sauce. I recommend asking for the sauce on the side so you can apply as much or as little as you like. This is one of the messiest burgers you will ever have with all that sauce dripping everywhere. If you're going to go for it instead of fork & knife it, ask for extra napkins up front. Other great choices at the restaurant are the prime rib, the buffalo steak (very tender w/a unique sauce), chicken pot pie, mac and cheese, and meatloaf. The wine selection is pretty diverse and they keep a lot of the big name top shelf wines in stock. You shouldn't have a problem finding a decent bottle. Overall, a great diverse solution when you're not in the mood to pick a one-trick-pony restaurant. read more

i've been there during lunch and tried the filet mignon but is soooooo good with the red wine reduction sauce. you have to try it! and their mashed potatos are the best! not too crowded. dont order the creme brulee for takeout cuz it looks like they just put a slab of cream in an oversized takeout container and you'll just end up throwing it up. just have it there. read more

Went for DineLA but did not order from that menu. Ordered a Seafood Cioppino and it was very salty. My boyfriend ordered the organic roasted chicken and it was super bland. Won't be a place we will be going back to. read more

I am updating my review- due to several conversations with a rep from Smittys. He seems genuine wanting to investigate and correct my experience. After serious thought i truly appreciate his time to ask and investigate the situation. This may not increase the stars on the review- but i can assure you someone at Smittys really cares. I cant say the pot pie is the best- but the waiter was great and so was the alcohol. Overall I hope this helps someone else have a better experience. Give them a try and hopefully you will have a great experience. Thank you Sittys for taking Yelp and the reviews serious- may you always be busy with customers filling up your tables. read more

My boyfriend and I came here on a spur of the moment lunch date. We sat outside and it was so lovely! We ordered our Moscow Mules and they were delicious. Our waiter Lance was AMAZING. Very helpful and Knowledgeable about the menu. He came around often to see how we were, but it was never annoying. He didn't disturb us one bit like at other places. We enjoyed our meal very much. The atmosphere and and the service will have us coming back. Thank you Lance!! read more

So I went to Smittys because I live walking distance and really had wanted to try it for a while. Sadly I wasn't all that hungry when it was time for our table so I was a little disappointed once I looked at the menu items because I wouldn't be able to eat an entree to myself... but the food was great I split a club sandwich which was very good as well as the cornbread which was complimentary that night... very Good but we left with to go boxes read more

I went there for dinner on the night of Thursday August 13th. Let me be clear the service was excellent and this problem was all about the kitchen. The first dish I ordered was an appetizer of Fried Calamari and Shrimp. The first bite was a shrimp that had spoiled and now tasted like ammonia. For those not familiar this is what happens when shell fish either gets old or have been left out too long. This was followed by a fried chicken salad where the fried chicken was limp and cold and the salad was soaked in dressing and I was unable to eat it. Finally I got a fruit salad which was very good. Believe me, I am not one to normally complain, but the food was totally unacceptable. What surprises me more is that the Smith Brothers would have their name on this place. I love the Chophouse. read more

My husbands chili, his first course, came ice cold. They replaced it. The chicken came and was like rubber. I think they had a bad night? Service was excellent but with the not great food and oh so NOISY room. We wont be going back to this old style restaurant any time soon. read more

Great menu - perfect place to come if you are looking for comfort food. I have not had an unacceptable meal here! One of my favorites is the Sand Dabs. The smell of barbeque is what brought us in and I'm so glad we came. I had the herb crusted white fish and my boyfriend had the beef ribs. The food came out so fast. Everything was great. Nicer more upscake american comfort food restaurant. They've got mac & cheese, pot pies, rubens. But the thing to get here is their cornbread. Just come for the cornbread and you won't be disappointed. read more

I love Smitty's mac and cheese. It's not the original type of mac and cheese... but believe me, it is so yummy. It's not served as a side dish my yelpers, it's actually an entree dish. It's a must try! But hey, everything there is pretty good. It can be a little crowded on the weekend, but it's not too bad. read more

Really good food, wine and beer were also very good. Wait staff was friendly and the environment was welcoming.

I went here for a work lunch. The food was good. I recommend trying the cornbread. The cheese bread wasn't so good. The vegetable panini was pretty good but a little messy. The service was prompt, staff was friendly, and restaurant was clean. If you sit at the bar they have huge potatoes chips in baskets on the counter. The restaurant is larger than you would think since there are rooms in the back. There is valet parking on the street behind the restaurant. There is also 1 hour parking in front of the restaurant for $1. read more

Food taste like whatevers. Got the mac and cheese and the meatloaf. The mac and cheese tasted like it was made by a child... And the meatloaf was tasteless. Maybe i ordered the wrong food.. BUT! A+ for customer service! Mr.boss man came over and greeted us and the waitress was super nice. Yeah i wouldnt go back. read more

came here due to the power outage on 12/1/11. called in a reservation 30 minutes in advanced which was cool. place is a lot fancier than the lady and i expected though. the cheese toast was good, thin slices of bread that were almost like crouton chips covered with toasted parmesan. pulled pork sandwich is very good, but the pot roast could use a little more flavor. the mashed potatoes and fries are excellent though. in the end, higher than i would pay for standard american food, but it's not like we could have cooked with no power. probably won't be back due to the prices of food and cocktails but still a filling meal. oh yeah, there's no happy hour either. BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Classy restaurant and delicious starters and entrees. All the classics are served but with a personal chef's touch. Nothing too elaborate but yet different from your regular restaurant. The wine list is very interesting and the wines I savored were excellent and not overpriced in my opinion. Some of the entrees can be a bit pricey though but remember this is a real nice restaurant and not some sort of average family restaurant. Nice table linens, flatware and glassware and the service is professional and friendly. Valet parking is available in the back. read more

Parking - Private lot, valet, or parking structure. If you do park in the structure across from Green Street Restaurant, make sure to validate at Cafe 140 South (sister restaurant to Smitty's). Reservations - Definitely make reservations! Food - Not innovative but what is offered on the menu is executed very well. 1. Iron Skillet Corn Bread - Average. Bits of corn incorporated. Not too sweet. 2. Chicken Pot Pie - The entree looks like a small pizza! Great crust, big chunks of chicken, potatoes, peas and carrots just like mom used to make. 3. Mac and Cheese with Ham - Not your typical overly rich and decadent dish (which I love) but well flavored. 4. Cioppino - Very good recommendation from our server! Huge portion with big chunks of fish, clams, mussels, calamari and crab. 5. Sea Bass Special of the Day - Very good. Peach salsa, pan roasted sea bass with a crusted skin, risotto on a bed of spinach. 6. Creme Brulee - Really good. 7. Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp - A mushy mess. 8. Fosselman's Ice Cream - Changing menu of flavors. We got the espresso and the pistachio ice cream, both of which was icy and old. read more

We sat at about 7pm, it was the height of their dinner rush. There were some issues for me, but perhaps I was expecting more knowing the quality of the Smith Brothers' establishments. The decor is very nice, it has a great feel to it in that you'd like to be warmed from a cold outdoors by a nice scotch and a home-style meal... of course we're in the South Lake district of Pasadena, so the temp rarely drops below 58 - a chilly night is rare in these parts, but this would be a great place to escape to in those instances. We were greeted by their signature Iron Skillet Cornbread - It was "OK" in my book, a mix of crusty / crumbly exterior and warm and moist center. I can appreciate it to accompany certain dishes, but not my favorite as a starter, (I would love to see this dough use for hush puppies accompanying a fish plate). Additional starters included a Caesar Salad and another salad which included fruit (which was not in the description) with a ball of neatly fried goat cheese... the latter of the salads looked great and was, but it was off from the description on the menu. The Shrimp and Calamari basket was OK and a Crusted Rare Tuna with a slaw, the tuna did not taste as fresh as I would expect, but the dish was good. Entrees included Pork Chops, Barramundi, and Meatloaf... Considering the decor SCREAMS Americana and the majority of the menu does as well, having a fish native to the other side of the pacific on the menu seemed odd to me (I am nit-picky)... I did appreciate seeing Sanddabs offered though and would love to give em a try here! The pork chops looked fine and were enjoyed by the person who ordered them, the spaghetti squash it was served with looked and tasted great... although I thought it an oddity of pairing pork chops with spaghetti squash, as opposed to mixed greens and/or apple sauce. And finally - The Meatloaf - for all that was said in reviews and it being one of their specialties I was disappointed. It was a generous slice, topped with a stewed tomato sauce and the loaf itself had been baked with bacon on top - FANTASTIC PRESENTATION - It looked delicious!!! An excellent opportunity for smoky, sweet and savory succulence but in my first bite all I got was SALT... I will leave it at that. It was served with mashed potatoes that were OK, they weren't bad, but I can't say much else about them. And finally, desserts - Creme Brulee, Cheesecake and Key Lime Pie. Everyone commented that there was a odd taste to the cheesecake - IMHO it was as if an ingredient had been in the freezer a bit too long. I would try it again to see if the quality was better because it seemed to hold potential (guessing a blend of neufchatel, cream, possibly a bit of ricotta cheeses, excellent body and firmness with the right creaminess and sweetness). The Creme brulee... excellent custard, the top seemed to be a bit over torched... the caramelizing is the toughest thing - even distribution of topping, right flame and distance,,, I steer clear of this dessert as it is far too difficult for most to handle perfectly and they proved my point, the topping was a bit too thick and in turn they seemed to bring the flame too close resulting in patches that were too scorched and I would swear I could taste the butane... it was then dusted with powdered sugar (why are you hiding the gem of the brulee!? This is the point of the dessert and then you cover it with powdered sugar??!!?!) The Key Lime though was GREAT!!! I will be back just for that, great presentation excellent consistency, perfect richness!!! (Creamy, but firm and not overly sweet) At the end of the night I would would say the restaurant can definitely hold an appeal to those looking for a home-style feel. The average price per head on the dinner we had would be $50+ ($8app/salad, $8 cocktail, $25 Ent. $8 dessert +tax&grat) - Personally, I enjoy the Smith Brother's establishments and will go to ACH and Cheval but need to try this one more time before I put it in my regular rotation... read more

I finally remembered to make a reservation to eat here on a cold and rainy night so I can try their pot pie. Now I was skeptical because it only has a top crust. I repeat, there is only crust on the top and normally this would disqualify it from being pot pie but I went with an open mind because I really freaking wanted a pot pie this weekend. It has all the right vegetables, peas, carrots, mushrooms, celery, big giant chunks of chicken and really light crust, it wasn't heavy and flaky like puff pastry. It was very good and it hit the spot. Now was it worth $19? I'm on the fence, once a year probably. The key lime pie was also very good, tangy and sweet, but like my pot pie I wish it had more crust. The service is very good too. read more

If you are looking for good wholesome American eats, go here. I recommend the ribs or the chicken pot pie (to die for) and their griddle corn bread. Super moist and delicious w/butter melted all over it!!! I miss this place!!! read more

Heavenly corn bread made with real butter, excellent service, relaxing ambiance, wine list offers adequet choices by the glass, half bottle as well as 750ml, in addition to the corn bread, we both requested dishes from the daily specials, and were pleased with the tastes, desserts are average, the espresso is on the sour side. Apparently this place is a popular choice on Lake Ave. in Pasadena, anyhow for power lunch, I would still prefer the Parkway Grill, or the dining room at Ritz Carlton (Langham Huntington). read more

Total fan of this place..went with coworkers for a business dinner on a Wednesday night. Wasn't sure what to expect, but the ambiance was terrific, along with the beverages, food, service, etc. I'd say skip the potato chips and cheese bread that many have raved on. We really, really liked the meatloaf, and the caprese salad special (it was the best Caprese I've ever had. Very plentiful and topped with a delicious balsamic arugula salad). My chicken picatta was super yum as well. All of this for the prices will make me go back. What we got was substantial comfort food and in the $15 price range? OH - how could I forget..the key lime pie!! That's a must get for dessert. read more
