Smitty's Grill - The Ribs were not bad but my girlfriend loved the liver with bacon. Everything tastes great with bacon. - American Near Me - Pasadena, California

The chicken sandwich and fries was very very good. Ate at the bar and it was great service. Pretty much full bar, I didn't try their cocktails but lots of people were drinking them. The crowd is an older grandparent crowd but I went on a Tuesday so not sure if it gets livelier on the weekends. read more

This place has been by far the worst place I have ever ate at. We got sat down in front of the cook station... Had to wait until our appitizer was already cold before we finally recieved our silverware. We got the crispy ahi tuna which basically by the time we got to eat it was cold and tasted like oil. Then came our main course I asked for a medium cooked prime rib mashed potatoes and spinach, it was all disgusting it had no flavor and an under cooked steak, i asked for medium not rare. I would never recommend this place to anybody. read more

wow...food was amazing...our waitress was really sweet and attentive... the rib eye was so juicy and mouthwatering....ill definitely be going back here... and i highly reccomend it :) read more

My awful dining experience happened on 12/23/2014. I contacted the restaurant right after I left and spoke to Christina who never bothered to follow up. I followed up on 1/13/2/15, 1/16/2015, 2/23/2015 and 3/01/2015 with Mathew regarding a complaint letter I sent to Bob and Gregg Smith. Till this this day, I never heard back from anyone. Overall, the waiter prejudged me and the disparage treatment I received had everything to do with my race. If you're a minority and black to be exact, know that you'll be profiled and treated like a second class. I'm just going to paste the letter I sent to the owners who did not bother to follow up: To: Bob and Gregg Smith, First impressions are truly last impressions indeed. I've never had such an awkward service at any restaurant in my life! I spent 2 hours surfing online for top restaurants in Pasadena to have a business lunch and found your restaurant. The reviews were great. [Now I wonder if they are even fake reviews]. I liked the setting and the food so I made a reservation for 2 at 11 30am today 12/23/14. I had not seen lunch partner for almost 3 years and she's a potential employer so I wanted to do my best and Bobby ruined the experience in the end! I had planned to pay for the tab so I got there 10 mins and asked the hostess what I needed to do. She took my bank card and Bobby confirmed he had it in his pocket when he came to introduce himself to me. I didn't mind he read the special from a script. It's a lot to memorize so it didn't bother me. Issues with Bobby: Why did he bring the tab showing the total to the table and placed it next to the Director I was with when I gave my card to him? I was shocked and had to face the awkward moment I tried so hard to avoid. We both literally tried to pull the black folder towards each other until I told her that I already took care of it. I didn't need to see the tab before I paid for it because I had enough funds to cover whatever amount we spent. The most embarrassing and dreadful moment was when Bobby returned the receipt and said out loud that my card was declined, smiled, left the black folder next to my guest and whispered "Merry Christmas" in my right ear. I don't even celebrate Christmas but that ok because he didn't know this. I felt hot air go right through me, I was confused and didn't know what just happened. I had cash to take care of the $41.15 tab. Then, I opened the black folder and realized he lied. He already swiped my card. This all happened with the Director sitting right across from me. The restaurant was very full around 12 45pm when this happened so I am sure other diners heard him. Why did he mistreat and humiliate me like that? Did he assume I didn't have money? I have a professional job with 4 college degrees and I'm financially stable. This is not humor. He intentionally did this. I know people do not understand when people of color believe they're mistreated because of the color of their skin. I'm black, the Director is white and the restaurant was predominantly full with whites. He acted unprofessionally and I need Bob as well as Gregg to address this with him. It hurt me so much that I felt very hungry with a bad taste of Smitty's Grill in my mouth. Bobby represents your brand and I need to know why he did this to me. I will not come there again or recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. I will post my reviews at "opentable.com" and on YELP after I receive your response so I can post the resolution that came out of this ordeal. I spoke to Christina, a manager about this already but I wasn't sure if this will be handled to my satisfaction. I'll not recommend this restaurant since in this day and age, people assume certain class of people do not have the means to dine in a good restaurant!! read more

You cannot beat a lunch here in Bobby's section. He is an amazing server - professional, witty, and full of good ideas. The food is always fabulous whether it's fish or pork tenderloin or any of the comfort food items on their menu. If I lived closer, I would be here once a week! read more

My husband says I should start paying rent to Smitty's I'm there so much. I started going regularly several years ago with a bunch of other stressed out teachers desperately needing something to look forward to at the end of our work week that involved lots of alcohol. After trying lots of different places around Pasadena, we finally settled on Smitty's. It's been our regular place to go ever since. As teachers, we can get pretty loud and bossy, and the Smitty's staff never bats an eye at our antics. I love everything about it, from the friendly hostesses who always greet you with a smile and a compliment, to the awesome managers Thomas (who regularly runs down the street to get our favorite dessert for us at Cafe 140 South) and Sean, and my favorite bartenders Derek and Jessica. I'm usually at the bar, but service is always excellent when I'm civilized and sit at a table. This past Saturday night, we had a special occasion dinner here for 12 people. We were celebrating two birthdays and an anniversary. Everyone had the best time. From the moment we walked in with a big box of flowers, party favors, and a giant cake, Smitty's handled it all for us. Our server Elena is a doll. So sweet and professional, and handling all of our requests with a smile. When we were all seated, Sean sent over complimentary cornbread for the table. Such a nice touch and greatly appreciated. When it was time for the cake, they brought it out with candles and everybody sang happy birthday. And we were not charged a cake cutting fee! That blew me away, since most restaurants know they won't make any money on dessert if you bring in your own cake. (We tried to make up for it by ordering lots of alcohol.) All in all, it was a first class experience all the way. If most of the guests in our party weren't from Huntington Beach, they'd be making Smitty's a regular destination as well. Cheers to the management and staff! read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Pasadena. It has a great atmosphere and delicious meal choices to honor any occasion from purchasing a home to celebrating a graduation. read more

Our company hosted some oversea guests at Smitty's. We rented the back dining room for $1,000. The onion rings as appetizers were thinly sliced. A lot of oil is caught in the rings. The fried calamari was ok. I tasted a few pieces of ribeye steak of my co-worker. They seemed dry but ok. I had white fish which was overcooked and very dry. The Manhattan style clam chowder was ok, not too salty. The only good things I heard were the salads. The service was so so as the waiter made us wait for a long time to take our orders. During order, he for some reasons was talking to a waitress at the same time. So, my vote remains 3 stars. read more

This place was a horrible disappointment. After dining at Parkway Grill many times I was expecting Smittys to be good. I knew it would not be near the caliber of Parkway, but before going I heard it was good. This place sucked big time. $8 for burnt cornbread that you practically needed a chisel to slice, $15 for a crappy chicken caesar salad, cold french fries, pulled pork sandwich that tasted like it was 3 days old...my son asked for a refill of iced tea and the aloof waitress said "there is none left, my co worker already dumped it out". Evidently the waitress really didn't care much about us. She was not very charming and just had a cold demeanor. They give you this huge burger served open faced so by the time you assemble it you already have a mess on your hands. Make sure you ask for a steak knife to cut it in half since they don't have the courtesy to provide you one. The side salad and the chicken caesar ($15 ripoff) looked like an angry 6 year old just threw it on the plate...you could get a better ceasar from Costco food court! $31 for some grilled salmon and veggies...give a break, you may as well go to Parkway to get a proper meal. I realize I am on a tirade right now but it is not without damn good reasons! This place had no attention to detail in the food preparation nor presentation, it did not taste fresh and was a huge let down. Maybe they just had a bad night I am not sure. We wanted something special for a family member's birthday dinner out and what we got was sheer disappointment. You do not receive bang for your buck but rather frustration. Skip this place! read more

I was at Smitty's about half an hour ago for a friend's birthday. i have never been there before but had heard excellent reviews. the food was good, the wait staff was ok- slightly rude but whatever. But the behavior of the management was horrible. I won't go into details, but I can tell you that I won't be back. Oh well, there are a million other amazing places to eat in Pasadena... read more

Went for lunch yesterday..... Great food, great service! Even though we were early, we were seated right away, and cornbread (a MUST!) came right to the table! Salads were gigantic and vibrant, and certainly delish! I don't get to Smitty's as often as I would like, but this lunch will leave me longing for it. read more

Gotta be impressed when the bartender not only remembers your name, but also your drink. Stopped by for just one drink and was impressed, had a full glass of Gloria Ferrier Sparkling WINE, YUMMY AND FOR $8.50 WAS WELL WORTH IT. read more

The food here is above par. I have eaten here countless times. They have craftsmen on tap as well. Never a bad meal and your meal is cooked to perfection. If you are super hungry, get the iron skillet corn bread. We usually get it to go for the weekend. Enjoy! read more

I came here on a business luncheon and the food was excellent. A nice joint with a good story behind it. I was impressed on how clean the establishment was and the choices on the menu. I am taking a star away because our waited must have been an unemployed comedian, it got old real quick. Everything out of his mouth was a side crack or one liner, I mean its cool but sometimes its a little too much. read more

The food here is delicious! I'm a fan of American classy American classics. I've only been here twice, but both times my man and I had issues with the servers. The first time I assumed the server was really busy, but it turned out she just had an issue with us. She was very attentive to the table next to us, but barely gave us the time of day. She did not come to ask us how our food was or if we needed refills. The second time we went to Smitty's our server completely ignored us to carry on a long conversation with people across from us. The people involved in the conversation had to let the server know we were ready for our check. We have had this issue at other Smith Brother's restaurants. Perhaps the staff needs some training in dealing with people who don't fit into the well-to-do white Pasadena stereotype of days long gone. Look around, people...Pasadena has changed. read more

Dined here as private party on outside patio. Nice ambiance. Food was overcooked and bland. Out of our party of 24, everyone's fish was dry. Ordered special short ribs and got one tiny rib also overcooked and dry dry dry ($29). Not going back. read more

So Mrs. C was nice enough to take me here for part II of my birthday as well as try the Dine LA 2009 menu at Smittys. The restaurant doesn't seat that many people, so you may want to make a reservation if don't want to end of sitting on the patio. Good salad and appetizer - I was surprised by how good the cup of chili was. This place's prime rib was WAY better than the one we had eaten the evening before at a different restaurant, and it came with a delicious au jus as well as creamed horseradish. The horseradish didn't have enough punch for my tastes, but just the fact that I didn't have to ask for it was nice. Seabass was so-so, but saved by the very nice sauce that came with it. I'm not a big fan of sauces to cover up food, so the only reason this place gets 4 stars is because we sat in Thomas's section. Great service from an extremely funny guy, and when we ordered creme brulee for dessert he came out with 2 spoons. "I have a spoon for you, sir," handing me small teaspoon and "I have a spoon for you," handing Mrs. C a spoon as big as a person's arm! Well not quite, but you get the idea. "Sorry, the kitchen's out of clean spoons. That's all I got." *shrugs* So 3 stars for the food, and +1 for the funny server. :) A nice place when you're in a carnivorous mood. read more

I have eaten at this place several times. It is fine for a lunch in the Dena. Cornbread is nice and the cobb salad was ok. Nothing special. I am rating this on steak quality. No where near worth the price. This place is all about the old school ambiance of a boys club but fails in delievering the most important part and that is the food! The place again is very nice, old school. The bar is great....great chips and good selection of beers and wine. Great outdoor seating area as well. So much potential but fails miserably on quality of food. We were there with a big group of 30. Sampling of everyone at that table was two stars or three. No one thought it was good. That says it all right there. Need good steak....I think you know where the good steak houses are. read more

Been coming to Smitty's regularly for the past two years now. Probably THE best steak I've ever had. The asian pear salad is close to being THE best salad I've ever had. Their home made potato chips? The best I've ever had. Ambience and service is amazing; has the classic Pasadena feel tied with a dark and classy mood. Still amazing for lunch, but especially brilliant at night for dinner. Easily my FAVORITE restaurant. read more

My family and I received arguably the worst service I've ever received! My party of six was 5 minutes late, but the host was very kind and seated us promptly. We were immediately greeted by our waiter and six glasses of water. At that point, the evening went south very quickly. We ended up waiting 10 minutes for bread and our waiter didn't come back to take our orders for at least another 15 minutes. Granted, the place was busy, but a party of six that arrived 10 minutes after we did received their food right before us. After taking our order, our waiter came back and informed us that the specials we ordered were no longer available. So three people got three different cuts of steak. We asked for medium-well. When our steaks finally arrived almost 40 minutes later, each of the three medium well steaks arrived in the following manner: well done, medium well, and medium. At this point we just ate our food because we didn't want to wait any longer. Positives about Smitty's: - mashed potatoes were tasty - asparagus was good - Herb and Garlic Chicken was flavorful and perfect for my sister (but my parents felt that the chicken was too soft) - dark wood and loud ambiance is good for the steakhouse vibe As I mentioned before, service was absolutely terrible last night. read more

We came here for my dad's birthday(July 8th) and we had such a good time. When we came in they asked if it was a special occasion and we told them it was my dad's birthday. They put an orchid and a card on the table for him which was so sweet! Our server was Moses and he was awesome!!! My aunt told him how she hates how the roast gets so dry but ordered it angways. When it came out Moses told us he asked them to pour juice on it while cooking and my aunt said it never tasted so good. We really appreciated everything he did and will request him every time we go!! I also have to mention Matthew! I think he is the manager. He was so nice because he offered to take a picture of my family and I a few times during dinner which we appreciated. All in all it was a great experience and can't wait to go back! read more

The other reviews are very accurate. A few additions: not everything is expensive. The decor made it look more upscale than I thought it would be. My only complaint was that the noise level made conversation very difficult. The waitstaff even had to apologize for the volume, unprompted. That was my only gripe, and by 10:30, the noise had died down and it was a very pleasant end to the evening. The place is not big, and I imagine you may have a wait at certain times. read more

Love this place! Food is amazing, Pat's drinks are to die for, Judy always has a smile, and Matt always welcomes us.

Top of my list for where I'm willing to spend good money to eat out. Have dined here twice and will definitely be back. Couple of weeks ago I had one of the dinner specials - Braisef Boneless Beef Shortrib. It was so juicy and tender, it fell apart when I stuck my fork into it. Just absolutely delicious. However, as much as I don't appreciate huge portions, this one could have been a bit larger. I could have scarfed down two of these. The side of mashed potatoes was yummy, but also could have been heftier. Oh, hell! I was just really hungry, I don't fill up on the bread and butter (my friend, however ate the entire bread offering), and every bite was so good! I just wanted to do a face plant in it. They have a very respectable wine list; however they are also very accommodating when you bring your own. If you buy your wine at Vendome, they waive their usual corkage charge. Love that. read more

There isn't much to say about this place. It was Monday night and I didn't feel like cooking dinnner. We went out looking for somewhere to eat in Pasadena. Yelp recommended two or three different spots, but as we cruised by, we saw the football game was on, so we chose this spot in order to watch the rest of the MNF. Anyway, the night started out alright. I ordered the crabcake appetizer that was really good, and it came with a red cole slaw that was pretty tasty. I wasn't terribly hungry after that, so I had a tuna melt for my entree. It wasn't that great. I also had the creamed spinach, much better at Boston Market. That ain't saying much. They had bacon in it, I guess for flavor, but I can't eat bacon, wish they would have indicated that on the menu. My gf ordered a steak, don't ask which one cause it doesn't matter, they didn't have it. The guy next to us ordered 3 different steaks before he settled on this monstrosity of a burger. Anyway, it wasn't any place to write home about. I barely remembered to write here. Don't expect to go back anytime soon. Maybe for crabcakes and drinks? read more

I had my birthday dinner here this year. It was a group of 12 people. The service was very good. I ordered ribeye steak. Awesome. Chicken pot pie was good. We brought our own wine. $15 corkage fee. Everyone enjoyed a good time and I will go back again for sure. read more

Great atmosphere!!! Good food. Crab cakes were awesome.

I was wIth loved one celebrating my birthday. We had reservations for another restaurant in the same area, but our UBER driver dropped us off in the back of the restaurant. We met some classy people coming out of Smitty saying they had great food and drinks. The valet guy in the back told us go walk right in and they would tend to us. It's was such an amazing experience in dinning. Real class act at Smitty's! read more

I love Smitty's. I confess that I'm completely stuck on the chicken pot pie, but the pot roast and petit filet mignon are great, too.

Ever since we lost Beckham's I've been wanting an equivalent replacement for their Prime Rib dinner which was always spectacular. Smitty's is only one this side of Rancho Cucamonga that has creamed corn with it which is my favorite accompaniment. I had this dish before at Smitty's and it was pretty good. They are so busy these days I had to get a reservation on a day my illness wasn't the boss of me. Unfortunately this time the Prime Rib wasn't good. It was tough with a bunch of silver skin which makes me think this isn't so Prime and was trimmed, if at all, by an amateur. The center of the roast was also just tough. This needs to aged or cooked low and slow to melt some of the connective tissue. The seasoning was also barely there which makes me think any rub was not given time. It hurts paying over $50 for a cut that isn't great simply due to rushing it. On the plus side, the creamed corn, creamed spinach and mashed potatoes are spectacular which is also important to me. And the service is top notch. Thus the three stars because those things matter. BTW, I had been slumming it with Boston Market's new Prime Rib and to be honest, it is surprisingly a better, more tender, better seasoned piece of meat and it is aged. Step up your game on the Prime Rib. Let me know when you do. read more

Even though I'm tight about my 5 stars, I have to give it to Smitty's because I'm a regular. I live in the area and whenever I'm craving prime rib, I come here with my man. We also love the salmon salad (one of the best we've had). My coworkers and I used to come here for happy hour and the bartender always hooked us up. The only downside to HH here is that the kitchen doesn't open until 5:30pm. There's no actual discount either for HH. I've also had my graduation dinner here in the separate room last May. The service was excellent and everyone was raving about how great the food tasted. I love the ambiance, too! read more

Tonight was the second time we've had dinner at the bar here. Matt is a terrific bartender-professional and friendly The Petite Filet is one of the best steaks I've ever had Smittys is nice enough for a celebratory dinner, yet casual enough to just drop in on any night It's so difficult to find a place that can mix both casual and upscale.
