Food was great, portions are large, corn bread is good, so is the fried chicken, will definitely come back.

I love the vibe here and the food is delicious! You must have the skillet Corn Bread.

Very nicely appointed. Good ambiance. Good service. High prices. But, I hate being patronized. Ordered a regular menu item: sand dabs. I probably should have known better. I asked if they were fresh and local. I was assured they were. I was given a large piece of fish, definitely not sand dabs, heavy on sauce, but otherwise flavorless. Very disappointing. No restaurant can possibly have sand dabs on the menu as a regularly available item. Just be honest with your patrons. Most of us are not imbeciles. read more

I liked the decor of this place - really good for a business lunch or dinner. Good wine list and the server we had was very well spoken, confidently telling us about the specials without a slip-up (no words like um or stuff). I loved the steak here - perfect medium rare. Very amenable to special requests - my order came out perfect! read more

Swanky, old-school, lovely 40's lounge look. Smitty's really harkens back to old glamorous Hollywood- the Bogie & Bacall type of Hollywood. I was craving some comfort food, and my husband found Smitty's via the internet. Reviewers were raving about the chicken pot pie---bingo! the perfect comfort food I was seeking. The service was above-par from the seating hostess to our ultra-cool server, Michael, who goes by the nickname "MBR" to help customers differentiate between another server who works there also named Michael. My husband forgot his cheater opticals, and MBR graciously handed his cheaters over to my husband so that he could review the menu. After MBR told us about the specials, I began to waiver on my initial decision. After great deliberation, I decided to stick with my first game plan, the chicken pot pie. My husband ordered the appetizer stroganoff and a side of cream corn. When our food was brought out, I almost felt embarrassed by the portion size of the pot pie. I got over it quickly though and dug right in. My husband enjoyed his stroganoff and the cream corn. Although the cream corn was not so creamy, it was sweet and fresh off the cob. Suffice to say, I could only eat a measly 1/4 of the pie and happily took it home. I've been snacking on it all day. read more

This eatery was delightful. The drinks were above par and the faire was fresh & delicious. Waiters and maitre d were at the top. We were almost discouraged to go in by a very rude valet who scolded us in Spanish before we arrived. He could have told us anything, in a very civil tone, but who argues with the patrons? (a curmudgeon). (We we're driving slowly on the street trying to find the address so he started yelling at us not to block the street) FYI there was NO street traffic on the back street @@ (eye roll). Instead of offering to park our car, he continued to scold us saying that the non-existent traffic was being blocked. Thank goodness the restaurant and the rest of the staff was EXCELLENT! read more

Smitty's has an East Coast sensibility to it: the warmth and personality of an independently-owned neighborhood pub, combined with the upscale decor, service, and food of a New York bistro. The entrees are delicious, hearty, and made with quality ingredients, and are always consistent. I have never, once had a bad meal or experience, after dining here for over 15 years. Smitty's is one of the few restaurants in the area you can count on to entertain friends, family and clients. I would also highly recommend renting a private room for a large party. The only drawback (for some) may be the noise level in the main dining room on weekend nights - we enjoy the sense of community and lively crowd - but I would caution those looking for a quiet, intimate dinner to avoid the main dining room on a raucous weekend night! The main dining room is less noisy on weekdays for lunch, and is a perfect spot for entertaining friends or clients to a special lunch. If you don't wish to use their Valet, there is a self-parking lot located in the alley behind the restaurant, next to Green Street. read more

Wonderful place. Been here several times because it's my friend's favorite and now it is one of my favorites too. Warm service, pleasant atmosphere, excellent food. The menu is pretty straightforward, not inventive, but one doesn't go to a steakhouse for "inventive." One goes for tried and true comfort food favorites, and Smitty's really delivers. Special kudos for the Dungeness Crab Louie salad, which unlike many Louies is not drenched in pink fatty dressing. The main dressing is a nice light vinaigrette with the pink stuff drizzled on top, more like a condiment than the dressing. Perfect. Superb service from waiter Paul in particular, whose experience and good character really shows. And may I say I feel Smitty's is a good value compared with many steakhouses. Our party of four had four main courses, two glasses of nice wine, two appetizers and two desserts and the bill was $250. Not a cheap meal but it could easily have cost much more at other more upscale places such as Morton's or Parkway Grill. Smitty's is plenty upscale for me. I love it. read more

Smitty's Grill - Dungeness Crab Louie Salad, just excellent. Look at all that crab! - American Near Me - Pasadena, California

A Pasadena gem. Always a crowd pleaser with family and friends for special occasions and other celebrations.

Everything was exceptional EXCEPT for one thing. Do NOT valet your car. There is a public parking there, which we did not notice until after we left the restaurant. I don't know where they parked our car ... it was COMPLETELY covered in bird droppings when they brought it back. REALLY bad. I had my car washed 2 days ago. This is so frustrating. It is SO bad that we had to drive to a gas station to at least clean the windshield ... disappointed! read more

I am a regular at this restaurant. It is classy, romantic, cute and friendly. Food is gourmet, serve with elegant style and you can change side dishes at no extra cost. Everyone remembers me and welcomes me with kindness. Valet is on the back of the building. read more

This place came recommended by some dude that my boss was stuck in the airport with, so we came on our first night in Pasadena. They sort of cover the area between high end diner, down home cooking and steak house. The result is a fantastic free range chicken dish--buttery, well seasoned, tender. Overall, very delicious. The atmosphere is nice, the free homemade potato chips on the bar are awesome also. The beer selection is kind of meh, but the food portions are gigantic. My boss got the chicken pot pie, and it probably could have fed a family of four. Overall, a great meal, but not so great we felt the need to return. read more

Great place to go for old-style Pasadena dining. The food is adequate, if somewhat overpriced (get Aunt Minnie to take you there), but the drinks make up for it. You can just sit back in a booth and imagine you're landed gentry while you eat your Crab Louis or some other menu throw-back to mid-century fancy schmancy stuff. Make a reservation, though, or they are likely to tell you they have nothing available - as you look around at all the empty tables. The service staff seems to have a lot of turnover too - some know what they're doing; many don't. Great bartender, though, and those homemade potato chips they serve are pretty yummy. Drink up! read more

I made a reservation for a Friday night 8PM for my girlfriend and I to celebrate our anniversary. We arrived at 745, only to wait almost 40 minutes to be seated. What i did not like was that we witnessed and heard 2 couples walk in and get a table while we were still waiting for ours. I went to the hostess to ask her what was going on and she tried to play me by saying that we were next to be seated. I'm assuming that she forgot about us. when we were seated everything was smooth sailing from then on. The prime rib was great, but i just couldn't get over the fact that the rest of my nights' plans were belated due to the late seating. I dont know if I'll be going back read more

Fabulous restaurant. Variety of food selections. Chicken pot pie melted in your mouth. Moses is an excellent server. We wanted for nothing.

The absolute best Key Lime Pie! It is so delicious that I once ordered this to-go 5 days in a row! Smitty's Key Lime Pie for the win!!!

Excellent! Sat outside in the heated patio. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice and fireplace was great! We had ahi and cornbread for appetizers and both were delicious! I also ordered a Moscow mule and it tasted just right. For entrees I had the Smitty salad and my boyfriend had the prime rib with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The salad was decent not as large as I would have liked for an entree. Shrimp was yummy and the salad flavorful. Prime rib was awesome so tasty with the au jus! Would definitely come back! read more

Food is fine. No service if you sit outside. We had a reservation for an outdoor table. When we checked in with the hostess, all outdoor tables were full, she said they were waiting for the guests to leave, so we waited outside the restaurant and eventually people from one table left. After standing outside for 10 minutes and no one came out to clear that table or update us, I went inside to ask the hostess if she was aware the guests had left. That was when she realized the wait staff didn't even know about it. Then we had to wait for the table to be cleared and remade. After we finally finished ordering, dinner rush was over, every table outside was empty except for us. Inside was pretty empty too. My soup came but no spoon. Ok no biggie. Then main courses came, and that was pretty much it in term of service. We were waiting so long in between each touch point such as asking for refills, dessert menu, the check, etc., I almost went inside to look for our waiter. Really disappointed at the lack of service especially when our friends recommended this place. We tip up to 30% during holiday season but this place didn't deserve the 18% we left. Don't sit outside if you want any service. read more

We picked Smitty's for a little pre- Christmas celebration. We had been prior and had such a great experience with wonderful food and wonderful service from a handsome young waiter. The restaurant looked just beautiful decked out for Christmas. We were looking forward to a nice meal to cap off a festive day of Christmas shopping. We got to our table and the waitress came over and took our drink order. She is an older woman with a short blond or grey bob. Tall and thin. She was pleasant enough, although she kept asking us to repeat ourselves. It is loud so that is understandable. We ordered three wines and a child's milk. She brought the wine over in a timely manner and left the table without a word as she still had drinks on her tray for another table. No milk. And that was it. For quite awhile. She visited all the tables around us, but never came back to ours. I wanted to hear the fish of the day before making up my mind. We sat there with our menus and just waited. And waited. After a good ten minutes we spotted her at another table and made eye contact with her. It was obvious that she still wasn't coming back to our table as she was turning to walk back towards the kitchen. We smiled at her to make it clear we were ready to order. Apparently this was the wrong thing to do because she obviously got pissed off about it. No nicer way to put that. She asked what we would like. My mother ordered her food and then she looked at me. I asked "What is the market fish tonight?". She asked me to repeat myself almost in disbelief. I asked again and her very hostile reply was "It's what I told you it was". That was her reply to me question. From a waitress who hadn't said more then a handful of words to us before now. Nothing about food. So I pointed to the market fish on the menu thinking maybe she misunderstood. Nope! She said "I already told you it is salmon and sword fish". Honestly we were baffled. Was this a joke? So I made the mistake of asking how the sword fish was prepared. She didn't like that question either. Her reply was literally yelling "How is it?! It's GREAT." To really drive home how annoying I was being I guess. So I had to ask her AGAIN what it came with. She said mashed potatoes and carrots and a sauce with capers. And just stared at me. Like I was the stupidest person to ever sit in her section. So I ordered it because I wanted this interaction to be over. This was how the rest of our ordering experience went. She was so rude to my mother when she tried to order our starters my jaw dropped. She acted like we were all imbeciles who were bothering her. And we had to order the milk all over again. Did she think we were somebody else? We didn't complain because this was supposed to be a nice night. This was something we'd been looking forward to and fighting with our waitress or making a scene was not a part of our plans. We still tipped her 18% because those are the kind of people we are. It's a busy and loud restaurant so maybe she was having a bad night. But it bothered us all so much that we were still talking about it this morning. We go out to eat all of the time. We are always extremely polite and grateful to the people that help make our meal happen. We have never had such a bizarre and hostile experience with a server. Especially since it was completely out of the blue. The food was wonderful. Delicious! I was happy I got the swordfish because I loved it. Everyone else was very nice. And we will come back. But we will make darn sure we never sit in her section ever again. read more

I hate to give this review. This is my third time to come here and tonight I had exceptionally horrible service. My beer was delivered to me warm. My entre which was New York Prime Rib was really beef bubblegum. When our dinner came we had to remind the waitress whom we saw only twice we ordered an appetizer. This really sucks as this was a celebration dinner and Smittys destroyed the night. read more

Always have excellent service drinks and meal! One of my favorite Pasadena restaurants!

Always a warm, friendly and consistent dining experience, away from the hub-bub of "Old Town." Bob and Gregg Smith really have created a genuine "dining room away from home." I just wish my Pasadena friends, with dining rooms could cook like this! Start with the corn bread and I usually get the prime rib or the famous "home-made-style" chicken pot pie. Nice selection of wine, by the glass. Prompt, professional service, pleasant outdoor seating. Classy, mature diners: a refreshing mix of elegant, local ladies who lunch (and dine) legal eagles and Cal Tech brain-trusters, not a "man bun" or tiny "emotional support animal" in sight! read more

I made a reservation for 2 @ 6p and notified the restaurant that we were celebrating a birthday. Requested seating outside and we were promptly seated and told by the hostess we need to be out by 8. Not a problem I imagined. From there the service went down hill, waited 10 minutes to be acknowledged or given water. Another 10 minutes to see a waiter. I had to ask the busboy to get our waiter as were ready to order. Then they handed by friend (birthday girl) a brown envelope with a happy birthday note from "your friends at Smittys" I grabbed the hostess and told her the service was so slow we might not be done by 8, she said she would inform the manager. We never saw the manager or the hostess again. The waiter finally came and took the order. Food came out and was very good...scallop special and prime rib. Had to ask for water re-fills. Then a birthday sundae arrived, not sure if that was because of the poor service or routine but seemed strange to get a random card earlier. We didn't get out of there until after 8p as predicted. Side note, we were seated at a table by the entrance to the tent, tent allows dogs ( 2 were there) and smokers standing outside the tent entrance made for some unpleasant smoke while we were eating. Not rushing back.... read more

Came here with my wife Miyuki for Valentine's Day late lunch at 3pm. The place was empty, save for two other tables. We came, because the food is always extra tasty and well prepared. My only three stars is for the terrible service. I will not mention the name of the waitress. We sat at a booth, which has a table the size of an ice rink. Could not reach the far side where the cruet sat, it should have been pushed within reach. No bread was served. Our waitress came by very occasionally when she wasn't chatting at another patron's table, and we had to always stop her for service. When the bread came, was it abundant in a basket? No, just 4 small connected slices on a small plate. I left the usual size tip because I'm a nice guy. I settle my frustration by commenting here on Yelp. I see they leave a form for comments along with the bill. Not the place if the comment is to do with the server. We probably won't go there again, because it's a bit of a drive from Hollywood, and the goal wasn't up to par. read more

I felt cared for, welcomed, and well-fed. My server was very attentive, and helpful, as I was being really indecisive. Finally ended up with a roast beet salad with goat cheese (yum), halibut with a carrot-ginger-leek sauce (didn't really scream ginger OR leeks, though), and topped it all off with apple bread pudding, which I sure didn't need, but somehow managed to just-about-finish it. Little noisy in the place, but still felt comfortable. I'll be back. ___________________ I'm back - and I am sorry that my visit to Pasadena is over - I planned my last meal here at Smitty's. Again, I felt well-cared for, I had a flight to catch, and thought I planned enough time for dinner here - when I arrived, I was told dinner didn't start until 5:30 - (would that leave enough time for dinner, and then make it to the airport by 7? - I was willing to take the risk). Rather than a leisurely meal, I opted for the Reuben - Oh, yum - Not a huge gut-buster like some restaurants, but very very good, and not overly laden with gooey cheese or dressing - just right. But the best part was the side order of red and green salad (a substitute for fries) - red and green cabbage with red onions and cranberries in a light vinegar dressing - I could eat a whole plateful of this stuff. My server got the hint that I was pushing my time, and dropped my check off a little early - she gets kudos for just keeping that in mind. When I visit Pasadena again (I hope I do) Smitty's will be a destination. read more

Went back for that drink--except I didn't order it, because after my date and I sat down at one end of the completely empty bar, the maitre d' brusquely shooed us into the absurdly small corner squeezed between the bar and the cashier. Which smelled strongly of ammonia. With that second chance so terribly blown, we walked out. Goodbye forever, Smitty's. P.S., their menu is set in Comic Sans. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday over the weekend and had no expectations at all for this restuarant since I've never heard about it before. I did not regreat going to this restaurant at all! Their Fillet Mignon Burger and prim rib was the bomb! Boyfriend's prim rib was cooking to perfection and just the way he likes! I didn't get a chance to try their deserts since we brought a cheesecake for the birthday boy (we found out they don't serve cheesecake..so we had to buy one!).. Our server was very attentive and wonderful too! His sense of humor definitely kept us hype that night! Lastly...got to say that the restaurant's atmosphere was wonderful too! I thought the bar was a bit too small and it was a bit loud...but hey, it's the weekend so that was okay with me... Would definitely go back to this restaurant next time to give their deserts a try! read more

Overpriced? Yes. Great food.... Yes, although I believe even good food should not be overpriced. Small portions. Now the good stuff: Delicious! We had corn bread, crab salad, roast beef sandwich dip. They asked if we'd like to start with corn bread and we said yes. Didn't realize that there was a charge ($8) and there was a lot of sugar on top. Otherwise, it was awesome. Wait staff, hostess.. top notch. Table cloth on table. This place is huge... each section, whether the main dining room or the smaller rooms in the back, was lovely. Ambiance was conducive to a business meeting, friends' gathering or couples. Highly recommend. read more

Love their corn bread.. It's very crunchy on the outside but moist and soft on the inside. It's a great combination. It's not too sweet, but it has enough flavor. I had their seafood cioppino. The soup base tasted a little too salty like the use canned tomatoes sauce. But the seafood is cooked to perfection. It's soft and doesn't taste chewy or dry (like when it's over cooked). Will definitely come back for their corn bread and maybe try other dishes that they offer. read more

Pretense much??? Hahahha these people REALLY take themselves seriously. Do not wear jeans if you want to fit in. There is no dress code, but Friday (early) dinner and we were way under dressed. Which is not to say it's a dressy place, but if I planned to come here, I wouldn't wear jeans. THAT being said, the ambiance is nice. It got loud at dinner- but whatever. The service was good. I can see why some earlier reviews felt discriminated against or whatever by the staff, they can be a snooty group... But all in all we were treated well and the service was good, no complaints here.... Keep in mind I was pretty busy laughing at the pretense going on around me. Started with a mojito, very good! I had iced tea, very average. Hubby ordered the special- porterhouse cut pork chop with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Very good, although he pointed out the chop was not seasoned at all and the cook relied solely on the sauce for flavor (which was delicious). Everything was cooked well. I had stroganoff... Well THAT was by far the best I've ever had. I hear of meat that melts in your mouth, this literally did when I tasted it. Unbelievable. Dessert was creme brûlée, very good. Not the best I've EVER had, but worth every bite I took. This is a nice place with super tasty food. It'll cost you, but I can afford it (even if I don't look the part). read more
