I have visited Pasadena quite often and stay at the lively Langham Huntington Hotel in San Marino. I decided to try Smitty's for a change from the overpriced hotel fare and from the usual Houston's. Upon entering, I was greeted with a smiling hostess and was immediately seated. The atmosphere is very cozy and the music relaxing jazz. I feel like I'm in a bit of Manhattan atmosphere. The menu has a great variety to suit any mood. I ordered iced tea, cuz I'm southern that way, and the beef stroganoff. I haven't seen stroganoff in a menu in awhile. I also am very critical of beef stroganoff having grown up with my mom who made it regularly and it's hard to beat hers. The last great beef stroganoff I had was at The Russian Tea Room NYC many many years ago! I can now say that this is the most fantastic stroganoff at Smitty's. I look forward to returning here. I'd like to try their other specialities but I'll have a hard time not choosing this dish again. read more

Five stars all the way, the food, the service and the ambiance. So so much better than Arroyo and Parkside Grill especially the service which is no comparison as I just went to the other two restaurants within the last month and I really do not wish to return to these two places anymore. Here, the servers all are friendly and ready to go the extra miles for you. This definitely reflects the mindset of the entire staff which means the owner is the same. I like the Crab Louie salad and the steak is great. We even got orchid for the birthday girls. The only comment I have is that I could not find the name of the restaurant at the entrance of Lake Ave. read more

A group of us went to have dinner. We ordered the Chef Salad with chicken, the Petit Filet, Sandabs, the Filet Mignon Burger, and Meatloaf. For dessert we had the Bread Pudding and Key Lime Pie. Everyone enjoyed their meal very much. Even though my nephew didn't say anything, I knew he enjoyed it because he inhaled it. Key Lime is one of my favorite desserts, and I usually give my husband a bite, but I forgot once I started eating. read more

This is an amazing place. We arrived early and sat at the bar eating their homemade potatoe chips. Luz, our bartender, was attentive , helpful, and very friendly. She even created a delicious, spicy drink for us which we named Luz's fire and ice. Next, it was time for dinner where Julie or was it Judy, I guess I was a little buzzed thanks to Luz, helped us with our dinner selections. Dinner was delicious, with the prime rib and leg of lamb being the favorites. I highly recommend Smitty's for any occasion as they have it all, delicious variety of food, excellent wine list, great ambience, friendly and attentive service. And last but not least, the best bartender, Luz, around. read more

I've tried all of the appetizers from Smitty's. The popcorn shrimp is good. I also like their freshly made potato chips that they serve at the bar counter for free during lunch hours. Free chips? How can I refuse. I've tried their steak, chicken, and their sandwiches, and by far, I think the fish is the best. I've had the halibut and the swordfish and when I order, my husband is more amazed with my dish than his Filet Mignon. This place is an awesome all-American style restaurant. read more

Been here a couple times, the food is a little pricey, but it is good. The corn bread and mashed potatoes are amazing. We had rims, steak and prime rib all of which were good, but nothing was spectacular. Service here is generally pretty good as well. One time I came here my waiter did have an attitude though. read more

Recently at here last week for boyfriend's birthday. We had a reservation at 7:30 got there at 7 and got seated right away. We got the crab cake appetizer and it was YUMMYYY. He had the rib eye steak and I got the prime rib. Prime rib was just okay not as good as stinking rose or lawrys. The rib eye steak was really good!! As for sides, the mash potatoes were DRENCHED in butter and the creamed spinach was just okay not that great. The service was excellent! overall we had a really good nice dinner. very affordable.Would def come here again. read more

Someone made a remark to me saying that this is Pasadena's powerhouse place for lunch meetings. Apparently, it is really true as I noticed many business people in "work" attire eating at this establishment. In general, the service and food were on point. I had their cauliflower soup which was really delicious. In addition, for my main entree, I had one of their market fish specials which was decent and large in portion. I parked in the adjacent parking structure behind the restaurant, but never bothered to find out whether Smitty's actually does validate. Also, it appears they have valet parking behind the restaurant. read more

Smittys is a dependable establishment where you get good service and good comfort food. I like their cornbread, which is excellent. Last couple of times I went there I had their chicken piccata, which is delectable and I also had their trout, which I have to say could have gone easier on the butter, but nevertheless still pretty tasty. They take pride in their service. read more

Clams / ahi tuna / king salmon was delicious. Service was friendly.

Sitting here enjoying dinner with my husband and I couldn't wait to leave a review. Besides the food being delicious and staff being nice, I have to mention that JUDY, our waitress is the kindest, most sincere person we've had the pleasure of meeting. She made our first experience here completely amazing and memorable. Thank you JUDY for your amazing service and for truly making us fee like family. You are #1 and we hope to see you every time we come back! read more

I do food delivery as my sideline and was treated really bad when I went to this merchant to pick up an order for a customer, just 15 minutes ago. Upon arrival, there were 3 employees at the reception area. I greeted one of them and suddenly turned his back from me and walked away. The other one is on the phone which is understandable while the other one was just standing and acting as if I'm not around. Fourth person came and told me that the food is not ready yet, without even knowing what I'm there for so when I asked whose food is not ready, he asked me for the name of the customer. That was the time he knew what I was there for and just said it is not ready yet. I Backed out and called the customer to inform him about the rudeness and bad treatment I received and he understood that I need to cancel the pick up from my end. Even the customer got disappointed for the actions of Smitty's Grill's employees. I will never go back to this restaurant and spread the word to warn others. I hope Gregg S. would be able to address this issue and do corrective actions in order to avoid the same thing to happen with other drivers which also affects the customers, and for the betterment of his restaurants. We don't deserve to be treated badly, especially if what we do is just to bring business to the restaurant. No drivers from doordash, postmates, or any food delivery platforms would like to deliver food from this restaurant if that's how some of its employees treat the partners who technically do business with Smitty's. read more

Eats: Mac and Cheese with Ham, Chicken Pot Pie. Lunched here on an awesome sunny day. Decor here was like upscale Denny's similar to Daily Grill. Some prices were a bit high for a lunch, but you expect that from a $$. There's a ton of tables inside and about 4 or 5 spots on the outside patio adjacent to the Lake Ave sidewalk. Leslie was our server and her first proclamation was that she was new. She did well and checked on us periodically even though we were at the few outside tables. The mac and cheese with ham and the chicken pot pie are two popular favorites at this place. The last time that I had mac and cheese it was truffled lobster, so I had high expectations for this entree mac dish. The amount they give you is pretty good and will fill most eaters. I was not a fan of the cheese flavor and the ham did not affect the flavor of the cheese positively. The cheese tasted a bit too processed in my opinion. The chicken pot pie was a bit better tasting and looked humongous coming out from the big flap of pie they toss over the chicken soup bowl. You heard that right. when it came down to the contents under the flap, I felt the chicken pot pie was a bit too runny and could benefit from a thicker broth. The flavor was still good. I might not come back anytime soon, but would definitely consider the other dishes before these two. read more

I always get a Mad Men feel whenever I'm here for business lunches on the weekdays. And more than likely, I'm usually the youngest diner in there. Over the tines I've been here, I've had: - French dip -- the sandwich itself was good, nothing too spectacular, and the fries were a little too shoestring for me - Dungeness crab Louie salad -- delicious on account of the real pieces of dungeness crab in the salad. The salad itself was all right, a bit too sour and tart-y for me - Smitty's salad -- basic and nothing too mind blowing - Grilled salmon salad -- the salmon itself was delicious but again, the salad itself was too tart-y from the dressing. A colleague of mine had the argula salad and had the same comment One notable thing is that they bake their own potato chips, and its delicioussss!! Its a thicker cut of potato, and there are huge stacks of them at the bar, be sure to grab some when you walk in! Alternatively, you can also ask for a plate of chips when you sit down. Service here is really friendly, but gets pretty slow around lunch time. Understandable, because there are many tables and the servers are pretty animated when they introduce themselves lol Don't think I'd come on my own, because there are so many other options. But this is a favorite of the boss's, and it gets the job done. read more

We love to eat here, but I can say it doesn't hurt to be regulars who reward good service. The restaurant atmosphere is fun, busy, and bar-ey. Plenty of things to keep the eyes and mouth entertained. The menu is a well-designed American feast and all delicious. Mac and cheese, meatloaf, chicken pot pie, corn bread... mmm. There's only one tap beer. Boo. Fortunately, I don't go there for beer. Wine can be a bit pricey, but they are well-selected and stored properly. You're getting what you are paying for, if you know what's right. We eat frequently and have had occasional problems with forgotten orders but nothing out of the ordinary. Some wait staff at times can be a bit inattentive - I'm making excuses, but it could be subject to rush crowds or any other highly-demanding customers (you know who you are). When it's on, it's on. Find a sitter. I know they're yours and you love them, but this place is not geared for kids and I don't think the other patrons would find them amusing either. Just MHO. THE GIST: Great American menu, shallow beer selection, good bartenders in a small bar, lively/busy atmosphere, make a reservation. read more

I am a huge fan of Smitty's. my family and i have been going for years, and i have yet to be disappointed with anything i have ordered. i've had parties in one of their more private rooms before and even that was a great experience. you have to get their potato chips! amazing!!!!!!!!! read more

By the looks of Smitty's, you'd expect to be paying Ruth's prices for a decent meal. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the bill for a dinner for two was well under $50. I think Smitty's biggest selling point would be its ambiance. You get a choice of sitting inside or out on the garden/patio in the back. We chose the latter, and the environment was absolutely great. Very nice decor. The service by our friendly waiter was also 100% top-notch and professional. Overall the food was good, portions were decent-sized, and the place was a delight to be at. Smitty's is a nice dinner spot that you don't have to tap into your retirement fund to enjoy, and I would definitely recommend it. read more

Smitty's...great place to have comfort food! Complimentary valet parking behind the restaurant. Had the filet...deliciously cooked to perfection...med rare for me!! One friend had the chicken pot pie, said it was pretty good!! The other ordered the chicken, but it was too dry to his liking. Oh, and their freshly made kettle chips are really good too!! So if you're ever craving some comfort food...give Smitty's a try! read more

Smitty's is a great place to go when you want to have a nice but laid back dinner. It's a Smith brothers place with delicious Smith brothers steaks, that won't break the bank! You can't go wrong with the mac and cheese or chicken pot pie, both are fantastic! I've also had the fish specials which never disappoint. Drinks from the bar are always great. I love the house-made chips, though it's a struggle to not fill up on those. The service has always been great. The waitstaff knows their stuff and we've never had to wait long for anything. The restaurant itself is larger than it appears. In the back there is valet parking and an entrance. The front part of the restaurant can get a little noisy. This doesn't hasn't really bothered me though, I can still hear my table mates and it feels very festive. If you like it quieter ask for a table in the back, also the back patio is quite pleasant. read more

Comfy and cozy! That is the feeling you get when you walk into Smitty's. Their menu goes all over the place but they offer a lot of variety for home cooked comfort food. Their chicken pot pie is HUGE and delicious, with it's puffed pastry on top of a large circular dish. Their steak is also pretty tasty and flavorful and their cheese toast is good. The service was great and the restaurant is pretty stylish and packed. The restaurant can get crowded so be sure to get a reservation! read more

The Smokehouse Burger: A good standard burger. The patty itself was cooked a near perfect medium rare. The rattlesnake sauce is a bit tangy and spicy, but it definitely helps to cut through the richness of the bacon, grilled onions, white Vermont cheddar and the fat from the burger. This is not something I would eat every day, but if I was craving a super flavorful, tangy, bacon-y burger, I would not hesitate coming here. The drawbacks of this burger? It is SUPER messy. I think everyone that had this burger found themselves going to the bathroom in the end to wash away the rattlesnake sauce and other juices from their hands. I will say that the meat itself was not the star of this burger. The flavors were really tasty, but that tastiness ended up masking some of the beefy flavor every good burger should have. Would this be a place I would bring my friends to for a good burger? Maybe, but if we only had one stop, I would most likely be passing over this place and heading straight to Hollywood. THE EXTRAS: - Homemade corn bread. It was a little on the dry side, but the flavor was on point. - Homemade potato chips, need I say more? read more

Smitty's was always a place I had enjoyed when I lived nearby. I was in the neighborhood and thought I would stop in. Most of my memories of the place involved their skillet cornbread, so I was sure to order one to start with. When it came, I looked at with excitement. When I took my first bite, the first thing I noticed was sugar overkill. It was like I had mistakenly dug my fork into a bag of C&H. As I began to chew it, the bread was actually chewy, and generally seemed like it was old and had been reheated. This was very disappointing. For my entree, I ordered the smokehouse burger. It was a pretty monstrous burger with mostly great flavor. I say mostly because it was slathered in mayo, which I cannot stand, even though mayo is not listed as one of the ingredients in the menu. I would have said something to my server, but I went a good 20 minutes without so much as seeing her. Service was very slow. In case I did not mention it, service was very slow. My waitress took my order and brought my check, and the total gap between visits to the table was probably close to 45 minutes. My water glass stayed empty most of the night. After waiting for what was probably 15+ minutes after finishing my dinner for the check to come, I was close to walking up to the hostess stand and see if I could pay there. Again, the service was ludicrously slow. In sum, I had a regrettable experience at a restaurant I used to like. Too bad. read more

Definitely do a reservation for the weekend. we had a rezzie for 8, got in from sf a bit early, and were able to be seated at 7. Corn bread skillet. must try! Prime rib. perfect medium rare steak. great tasting with some bland mashed potatoes on the side though. so big, I couldn't finish it, but the bf and his buddy helped. Ribs. bf got a full rack, he missed this place that much! It was tasty. I think all 3 dishes were cleared by the three of us. the boys definitely can finish all the meat when there's too much. read more

Came here for lunch, on a fairly warm day. The special appetizer was the caprese and the chilled tomatoes were a delight. As for the meal, I opted for the meatloaf which was a pleasant surprise. The meatloaf wasn't too salty and was not drenched in salt, big plus. I was able to taste the meatloaf as well as the embedded vegetables. The mashed potatoes were good as well, light and nice fluffly yet creamy texture. read more

Went for Sunday Birthday Dinner and enjoyed the DineLA menu. As you are being seated, if they ask if you like to start with corn bread - ITS NOT FREE - lol. And if it is your first time there they might try to waive the corn bread ($6.95). We ordered the white fish and petite filet mignon. The food was cooked well and delicious. They have a nice wine list. There is also free valet in the back of the restaurant. DineLA menu made it possible to try this restaurant. Three course menu for $40 is very good. read more

I enjoy this staple of Pasadena restaurants. Good consistent food and service. Bartenders know how to pour a good cocktail. I enjoy the steak, as well as, the bbq ribs. Friendly business crowd. Busy at both lunch and dinner. The bar area is friendly and conversational. Dimly lit ambience. I suggest that you call for reservations. Worth the experience, if you're in the area. read more

Restaurant week Jan 2016 So...playing catch up with the girls at Smitty's. I went for the prix fixe, restaurant week special, and I was reminded why I don't tend to do that. Plus: The petite filet was cooked perfectly to order. Minus: The entrée sides (mashed potatoes and creamed spinach) were lukewarm. The "hot" fudge sundae was giant, but clearly created hours earlier and returned to the freezer. The hot fudge wasn't...hot...and the ice cream scoops had all become one...situation. Overall: With the addition of an amazing wine and great company, the dinner was fine. I wanted a good steak and got one. The rest? Meh squared and I won't be rushing back. P.S. Darryl was our server and he killed it. {Management: this is a good thing; Darryl is great.} read more

I never knew about this place until i started working here in Pasadena! We tend to come here during lunch when we have these "vendor lunches" where we can enjoy the food on other company's tab =P My favorite is the The Grill's Steak Chili... and make sure you get the bowl, not just the cup! I'm not a chili fan but i love the tender pieces of meat in the shop and the flavor is just spectacular! For entree, i alway enjoy their filet, either petit or regular filet they tend to make it just right for my taste bud! read more

I came here with my sis and my mom and all I can say is MEH. Food ok, the service ...was a tad bi-polar. The manager was there and was ridiculously nice and helpful. He kept asking us if everything was okay and made sure the bus boy refilled my glass of water constantly. Our waiter of the other hand SUCKED. We didn't even get bread. That's just wrong especially since we had to wait 20 minutes for our food! Our waiter was just a plain douche. He had that I'm being nice to you because its my job but inside I despise you kind of feel to him. Overall, the place is highly over-rated. The food is okay. Its not great, but its not bad. Its mediocre. Service has got some issues. read more

Lunch with my friend/business partner today. We split a poached salmon salad and a filet mignon burger. Both hit the spot perfectly. We decided to have sauteed spinach instead of fries as the side to the burger. I thought the spinach had almond slivers but they turned out to be slivers of garlic. Tasty. They also provide you with a delicious bread and big chunks of fresh butter to start. I definately want to go back and check out the rest of the menu. It's a casual classy place. Our waiter was very professional and the service was great. read more

5 stars for service!! Although the interior looked fun and cozy, my family sat outside for the dinner and it was just as, if not more, pleasant. The entire staff was so attentive to our table and the manager made sure everything was going smoothly and making sure we were warm. The food was great! I had the steak special with the wasabi reduction... would have to say i was expecting more of a kick but it was fine. Here's my service schpiieellll --- The front manager, Thomas(?), really great guy. I asked about getting validation for parking and the restaurant didn't offer it but he insisted to get it validated next door. So he calls the place to say that we were coming, sends his front host to walk with me to the sister restaurant, and bids me adieu. Fab! definitely want to come back for drinks at the bar and to try the pot pie. :) read more

Stopped in for drinks and an appetizer last night with Scott M. We had the bean dip which was fine (the tortilla chips were sub par compared to the amazing potato chips on the bar). Had these house specialty drinks: 1) Cosmo - very awesome, not overly sweet 2) Lemondrop - my fave here, very lemon-y and fresh 3) Grill Martini - sweeter than expected, very smooth and the best blue-cheese stuffed olives 4) Bloody Mary - fine for a restaurant, but we're ruined by Big Daddy's Bloody Mary mix which we use at home and is to die for 5) Old Fashioned - super yummy, nicely muddled and oh so smooth Place was pretty packed at 8pm on a Wednesday night, but we found two seats at the bar. You can eat a full meal at the bar which is always nice. Sean (Shawn?) the bartender was amazing. He was slammed but kept on top of us and was a great mixer and very friendly. He even gave us a mistake glass of chianti (like we needed another drink OMG). Will def be back when we're in the area or are late to another Regal Cinemas Date Night (which is what happened this night). read more

Went here with the husband for Dine LA. It was alright. The service was so-so. The hostess sat us at a table which was right in the middle of the room near the hallway to the patio and the kitchen. Since there were other tables available, I wasn't thrilled to receive this one. Our server was very nice and friendly. However, it took a long time to receive bread. She also did not bring the correct bottle of wine. The pacing of the starters and bread and wine arrival was off--bread was late (but I guess they were baking it so that makes it better) The food was alright. We both had the Dine LA options. My ceasar salad was overdressed. The salad my husband had was way overcooked. Most disturbingly, the steaks we were served were extremely overcooked. We both ordered medium rare and received well or medium well steaks which were completely brown (looked like how I used to get my steak at the Sizzler when I was 8). We sent them back--which was a first for both of us. The replacement steaks were more medium than medium rare but at least they weren't brown. The waitress handled the situaion well and was totally nice about sending the steaks back. The desserts were great, expecially the Sunday. My advice, however, would to be to save up and go to The Parkway Grill or Cheval Blanc...This isn't the best of the Smith Brothers' options. read more

Probably my favorite restaurant in Pasadena! I've loved everything I've tried... Corn bread, both their burgers, steak, salads, etc. Drinks are good too and they have a nice bar. Food and drinks are great and so is the ambiance. However, sometimes if you sit at their front patio, they tend to forget about you... This has unfortunately happened to me TWICE and I've had to go inside to tell them we want to order or that we need the check. I like good service, which they have always provided inside, but sometimes it lacks on the patio. This can be frustrating... Imagine having a wonderful dinner, then 30 min go by with no sign of the server after the food is dropped off. But, since the food is outstanding, plus I can walk to the restaurant, I will be back!
