just sat down at the bar to grab a coffee and a sandwich. tar pit cafe has taken on the coffee operation and they serve the same great plowshares coffee as their williamsburg location (woodpoint @ withers). the egg sandwich with goat cheese, greens, bacon and avocado was perfect! i believe roberta's make their rolls, which added to the deliciousness. so happy to have a joint like this in my neighborhood! check it out for coffee drinks and a quick sandwich/snack. read more

I came in here for brunch with my boyfriend and was greeted by surly attitudes and absolutely the worst service I have ever had- long wait, had to beg the barista for a cup of coffee at the counter, lost our ticket to get our food. Skytown is my preferred establishment, by far, in the neighborhood. Despite the fact that it's under the squeaking JMZ on Broadway, you'd never know it when you step inside. The vibe is calm, friendly and consistent. Food is ace-- grab the tacos (mega) or stack your salad (yeah, the salad. It's delicious and generous in portion)... brunch is recommended as well. Came here with a brokleyn free beer coupon. The bartender was very nice and had no issue with us using it. We both ordered burgers (Turkey and beef) and both were huge and delicious and definitely good value for money. Can we talk about how the "fried chicken with waffles" brunch served EGGO brand waffles? They were so clearly those familiar little waffles I've gotten from my freezer in my childhood. the veggie burger was amazing, i would return for that. also, the music and overall atmosphere was a pleasant one. i am from toronto, and was sent to skytown by some friends i met along the way. the two-seater table that my friend and i sat at was positioned too close to the washroom, and it was extremely wobbly, causing my drink to spill several of times. also, the bathroom was filthy, and on several occasions i seen the staff enter the restroom, yet no one took the initiative to tidy it. nonetheless, the food and service were good. i would return, just sit elsewhere and hopefully the bathroom will be in a better state. thanks for having us. love frm toronto read more

Live across the street and have been dying for a new cafe. Athom rocks but it's just a little too far to walk to if I'm in a rush in the mornings. This place is great and I love the fact that it doubles as a bar. The breakfast sandwiches could definitely be a little cheaper, or they could offer some cheaper breakfast options (pastries? fruit/yogurt? etc.) but I love the fact that it's spacious and there is plenty of seating. Crazy to think that this was the Beauty Bar, then Broomie's (wtf was that?)... and now it's this. Guess the transformation is pretty symbolic of the neighborhood as a whole, though. read more

Skytown is awesome. They have a cool location under the subway, great ambiance and fast service. I ordered the Kale Avocado Cesar Salad which exceeded my expectations. So freakin good. The waiter service was terrible and the music was so loud that I couldn't have a conversation with my friends. However, the burger was amazing and perfectly cooked. Upon my first visit to Skytown I would have given it 2 stars due to the behavior of the waitstaff. However, my boyfriend wasn't so turned off and we returned a second time - since then I have come to really enjoy coming here! Sure, purposeful accidental distressed clothing abounds and you will find more than one pair of ray bans at all times, but it's a pleasant crowd with good drinks and good food (veggie burger is very good and my boyfriend tells me the chicken sandwich and burger are good too). The waitstaff can be so-so. The male bartender is very nice and attentive whereas the waitstaff for table service are not so pleasant nor attentive and will sometimes leaving you waiting for ages whether to order or on the arrival of your food. There have been times when the food has taken an unreasonable amount of time and we received some snacks and drinks on the house for it (mind you it was a shot of some mystery liquor but it's the thought that counts?). They need to tighten up on the attitude of the waitstaff and the service in general - the kitchen staff also seemed to be always overwhelmed to the point where they definitely need more employees if they intend to function as a restaurant not just a bar with snacks. (Also the mussels, though the broth was good, were a bit sandy and needed to be washed more thoroughly). Overall, if you didn't have a great experience the first time, try again - you most likely caught them on a night with shitty waitstaff. 4 stars because regardless of the issues, I am still able to have a drink that I enjoy and have a nice time at Skytown. read more

ive already been there a handful of times before and the service has always been a bit touch n go, but the food is always good and well prepared, the barback/busser dude is actually the friendliest person who works there, and the previous time, i had a conversation with the owner who is actually super friendly. but this time was not. and I HATE playing this, but im gonna have to pull the race card out this time. for the record - i am a bartender, and understand how annoying people can be but when i walk into an establishment and have a server/bartender - they always start out at 20% tip for me. I walk in and sit down close to the end of the bar, a handful of seats away from the small kitchen. the female bartender ive loosely encountered before is working (she is the one who is touch n go with me) but i have faith because i see the barback there who is super friendly. previous times ive been there, it was with my father, this time i was alone waiting for a friend. the female bartender to coworker (some guy with a scruffy beard and buzz cut) : "omg u have to come see this video" they literally stand right in front of me, not acknowledging my presence watch the video on her phone, then continue to ignore me and walk to the other side of the bar. *shade* another few minutes pass, and ol girl is making drinks for people at the other end of the bar. finally i start to get up and leave cuz im not taking this shit. she finally acknowledges me and asks what i want to drink, then tried to recover by complimenting my hair and asking if ive been there before. i order, sip my drink and wait for my food. no offer of water, although every other patron at the bar with food has water, condiments and flatware. but no, none for me. next, two white dudes walk in and sit right next to me. she immediately acknowledges their presence, starts chatting them up and entertaining them. she tells them about the beers on draft, laughs about moby and his dance moves, etc etc. dumb shit. it takes me too damn long and two requests for a second drink, im still there waiting for my friend and elbow fighting with the dude next to me (but thats not the bartenders fault) my friend comes, we try for nearly 10 minutes to get him service and are not successful. i finally paid my bill and the bartender called me 'babygirl'. i couldnt help but roll my eyes so hard my head hurt. when i paid, yeah, i did not tip her and wrote her a note. "complimenting my hair and calling me babygirl will not make up for your bad service. Im a bartender too" needless to say we were the only people of color in there - and whats really maddening is that the bartender was too. it is a stereotype in the service industry that black people dont tip. but damn girl, we're supposed to be family and it just seemed like she was putting on a show for the people who she assumed would tip her. read more
