It was wonderful when it first opened years ago. Now it serves fish that literally stinks!

Visited this restaurant about 3 weeks ago and unfortunately due to Covid restrictions had to take our food to go. I can only imagine how packed this place must be during lunch time. With so many options, I must admit that I was a bit overwhelmed because I really wanted to try damn near everything on the menu. I opted for the fried shrimp/catfish platter with hush puppies and mac and cheese. My father ordered the shrimp and crab po boy amd my mother ordered the trout platter. Let me start out by saying that they are definitely not stingy with their portion sizes. I ate out of my platter for two days. The seafood was well seasoned and battered. I was not a huge fan of the mac and cheese, however that would not deter me from coming back. Its easy to see why this place gets so much business. I would definitely recommend!! read more

I went to the shrimp shack in Durham on Duke Street this evening and ordered the rockfish sandwich with fries. I've added pictures as to what they gave me. The first order they gave me was wrong. It was just fish and fries the second order after I told them that was not what I ordered was as if they just crumbled the first order with their hands and threw it on a bun. I don't eat anything, and I thought the customer service was awful in rectifying what I had already paid for. My daughter asked me why did I not tell them again for the second time that's not what I ordered I told her that the store would lose more money with my review than the $20 I paid. Please teacher your employees to have good customer service skills especially when the customer is paying. I went here based off the Instagram pictures expecting at least a mediocre experience. The food looked amazing & I'm a local food critic so I decided to check it out. I went to this location because it was closer to my home. I should have went to the holly springs location where apparently the better customer service is! I ordered a chicken sandwich combo for my son and a shrimp and crab meat poboy & got an additional one for $3 to take home for later. I asked the cashier if any of the sandwiches had tomatoes if so then no tomatoes. I also asked the lady to have them to place my sauce that goes in the poboy to go on the side to prevent sogginess for later. Mind you they were all within 3-6 feet radius so they all heard me order. This peculiar looking short light skin lady with the slick down jerry curl textured hair proceeded to sarcastically yell to the cashier as she hands the ticket "the sandwiches don't come with tomatoes on them no way!" Ok boom so I let's that slide, maybe she's mad I look better than her and her stimulus hadn't came yet, so I let it go. I gets my order 15 mins later, then gets in the car and notice i paid for the combo but only my son chicken plate had a side, not mine. Then the crab meat on the crab & shrimp Poboy was cold af! Sauce drenched on the second one when I specifically asked for it in the side. It was like they saw me and knew me personally and fucked my order all up. I walked back in and told the cashier respectfully that my side wasn't in there. Here's funny jerry curl ponytail lady again, "what side she get?!" I told the cashier "fries please." They start looking and small talking like it's my fault the side was missing! I'm like, ok these mfers ghetto as heck. The tension was so thick I didn't even want my shit I just came home and placed it in the refrigerator. Never again. I'll try the other location, looks way customer service oriented then this location. It was a waste of drive and $28 but God Bless. The old me would've had that whole place shakin but I let it go. Oh my!!!! Stumbled on this spot!! I'm glad I don't live in Duran. I'd be here EVERY day! The crabmeat n' Skrimp po boy was awesome!!!!!!!!! If you're within 30 miles of here, it's a must. We ordered the grilled mahi mahi, the grilled chicken, and the coleslaw. The fish and chicken had a strong peppery Cajun flavor and tasted almost identical. They were good but not really good. The coleslaw was pretty wonderful. It wasn't sweet or goopy or watery. The prices were very good until I realized the portions were pretty small. Still, it's easy to order, easy to pick up, and easy to order exactly what you want without a bunch of unwanted extras. We might go here again since it's so close. read more

Every year my family and I travel to NC for the state fair and I have to stop at Skrimp Shack. I always get the super catfish samwich and have enough for the sandwich and two pieces for my breakfast the next morning. This year I didn't eat any of it right away, when I did go to eat it, it wasn't catfish. Although the food at Skrimp Shack is great they are a business that lacks professionalism. Made a trip to Skrimp Shack on 5.18.19 at 6:00 pm and coincidentally they were closed. Although their were people in the restaurant the store had multiple hand written signs on it that said "closed for a family emergency." Despite the emergency it should impact whether or not the business is open or not. It's also not a good look to have people in your business eating while their are signs in the door professing that the business is closed for a family emergency. This is also not the first time that I've been the Skrimp Shack and their hours have said open yet they were mysteriously closed. Sadly enough I will not be back to patronize Skrimp Shack. I ordered the shrimp and catfish poboy sandwich with fries and mac and cheese. The sandwich was amazing and so was the mac and cheese. Their sign on their building reads, "best fish samwich" in town. It truly was super delicious. You can order your sandwich as spicy or mild. I ordered spicy and don't like hot food. It was the perfect amount of heat, spicy, but not too spicy. I also asked for a side of their poboy sauce. It kind of taste like a coconut shrimp sauce to a small degree. The sauce was amazing. I will be coming here again. read more

I'm never on this side of town so I thought it would be good to stop by since my mom was in town visiting. We are from FL by the way, so if I don't know good seafood, she certainly does. The cashier was very friendly and the order process was easy. After waiting for about 5 minutes, our order was ready - prepared just as requested. The ambiance inside was very nice as we sat and ate. My shrimp basket was perfectly cooked and delicious! Went there looking for fried oysters but they had just sold out to the gentleman before me so I settled for the fried shrimp instead and was not disappointed. The shrimp were large, fresh and perfectly cooked, the coleslaw was also fresh and good. The staff was very pleasant and came around to each table to make sure customers were satisfied. I've tried Skrimp Shack twice after hearing so many people talk about how great the food taste. The first time I was not impressed as the lines were long and I ordered a chicken sandwich and shrimp po boy. The chicken sandwich had absolutely no flavor but the sandwich was huge. The po boy had jumbo shrimp and was good with the spicy Skrimp Shack sauce. I decided to try this restaurant again. This time I ordered the Catfish sandwich which was great and absolutely huge. There were about 4 or 5 pieces of fish on that sandwich. I will definitely come back to try other items on the menu. This place is located in a shopping center that can get busy at times but there is plenty of parking. You can also order through Postmates for delivery or pickup. I got grilled shrimp and scallops, sweet potato fries and macaroni. The macaroni is cooked with a sauce and not baked but it was pretty good. We waited about 15 minutes for our food after we ordered and it was not very crowded. It was freezing cold inside although I'm not sure if that's the norm. There's plenty of space for groups up to 8. Skrimp Shack Finally made it to the restaurant. It's just 11:30 AM and there is still a lil' crowd. There is not a line out the door, but for it to be this early it's still some noticeable congestion. I was in line NO longer than 5 minutes. The cashier was friendly & efficient. Also i see a familiar cashiers face from the previous restaurant (Blue Stingray) Placed MY order, got MY drink & found a table. Now I wait. Receipt time is 11:30 now let's see how long it takes to get MY food (11:46) + the REAL important thing...the quality of the food. As I type this one of the lines at the two registers available has NO people in it. It would appear that part of the crowd is simply for takeout orders. This place is too small. I was bumping into people at the drink dispenser and had to bumper car some customers coming in the door. Of course MY size & stature make it easy to clear a path, but to the smaller & shorter humans this could be a issue. Also made a business decision concerning coming here 1st vs. stopping @ Kroger on the way in from Roxboro. Was concerned that they might be very busy during lunch hours. On to the review! I ordered The Shrimp Basket which is 12 Jumbo Shrimp, a side (Fries) & a drink (Cheer-wine). The food Is average at best. Nothing special The shrimp... subpar. The breading has NO flavor and the shrimp is rubbery & tough to chew. Jumbo Shrimp is supposed to "PoP" when U bite Into it. Also the breading of the shrimp is two different colors (5 Shrimp Out Of 12) indicating two different batches in MY basket. Frys are average as well. Well salted to say the least. They Gave Me a packet of cocktail sauce which too was bland. Two condiment dispensers were on the table Ketchup & Texas Pete Hot Sauce. Get your wet wipes because those bottles are "sticky icky" and (I guess) FULL of germs. I bit that bullet and just added to the germ stock. I mean shrimp and fries are finger food. I guess I will go down with the ship. I also could taste that the Ketchup dispenser used to have cocktail sauce in it. I'm still going to try the "Best Fish Samwich In Town" had to try the "Skrimp" 1st because the establishment is called the "Skrimp Shack" which to ME indicates a speciality in shrimp or does it? Because under the billboard says "The Best Fish Samwich In Town" indicating that the "Skrimp" is not "The Best In Town" Guess What? Its not. Hate to drag Mayflower into the conversation, but they still have (in MY opinion) the best shrimp + value for your money when it comes to quantity. Although I am referring to the popcorn shrimp on Mayflower's menu. The best Jumbo Shrimp I've ever tasted was a place called Kemp's that used to be on Hwy 70. (R.I.P.) Am I being hard on the Skrimp Shack? Maybe, but you should have seen those lines! It made it seem like the food was worth the wait AND it might be. Maybe I came too early or got a bad cook I don't know. I'm going to give them another chance, but as of right now MY rating is 4.9 Out Of 10. I am a major fried fish lover. Earlier this year I discover Skrimp Shack at the Cary, NC location. I posted a review about how great it was. Today I found myself in Durham on an errand and I decided to try the Skrimp Shack location on Duke St. It was the polar opposite of the Cary location. The sales counter was greasy and the restaurant was visibly unclean. The person who took my order was unfriendly and unclean. She had on a dirty tee-shirt and slacks. Fingernails dirty and no gloves or mask. ( no longer required, but greatly appreciated in food service). The food was fine but not as good as the Cary location. Also, the tray it was served on had no parchment paper liner. Not cool. During my stay the Head cook bolted out of the kitchen and went out the front door. A few moments later he opened the restaurant door and yelled to his assistant, "Get your ass out here and help me". He ordered the woman at the cash register to prop open the door with a child high chair. She grumbled all the way, but did it. At that point an alarm began to go off in the kitchen. The order taker panicked and ran back to get the manager. The manager came out and she realized it was just the fryer signaling a batch of fries was ready. As the cook and his hapless assistant began bringing an order of fry grease and various other provisions into the restaurant through the front door, the order taker admonished the cook for leaving the restaurant with an alarm going off. He made a scene telling her all she had to do was lift the basket. Swearing under his breath. The whole episode was upsetting and no liner on the metal tray I was eating off of, put me out of the fish and chips mood. I finished and upon leaving refilled my ice tea. The handle of the ice tea urn was so greasy, it slipped out of my hand. If you desire seafood I heartily recommend Skrimp Shack in Cary, NC. I suggest you avoid the Skrimp Shack on Duke St in Durham at all costs. Very negative experience. read more

The first two weeks the food was amazing. The food was seasoned to perfection and I enjoyed every bite! Unfortunately the food quality no longer matches my first impression and I probably won't be returning. I was supposed to receive 12 shrimp with my shrimp baskets. 1 order had 12, the other one had 9. The kids shrimp plate had 6 and at first glance it was very hard to tell the difference between any of the plates until I counted the shrimp. I tried the crab cake sandwich today.
