I never imagined that this place would be real. The first time I tried it was a month maybe two months ago when my family was looking at houses in Durham. We were all hungry and looking for something to eat. My uncle found this place and he was so excited to try it and the whole family decided to go over and see what it was about. I got the five whole wings that comes with hush puppies and two side sides. The wings were exquisite. They were so delicious now I couldn't finish them all because I didn't realize whole wings meant WHOLE wings BUT I DID MY VERY BEST TO EAT THEM ALL. Moving onto the hush puppies I hated hush puppies until I tasted theirs. Best hush puppies I've ever had in my life. They're better than my families. They're better than cookouts. They're better than everything. They are so delicious. I almost jumped with joy after sitting down in the restaurant. For my sides, I had corn and fries. Their corn is delicious so very good and so are their fries. They're probably my third favorite out of all of my fries from places I've been. Lastly the food I had the very first time I split the strawberry red velvet cake with my father, I almost didn't even let him have his half. The red velvet and strawberry was a genius combination. It is delicious together and it is amazing for a Valentine's Day dessert. I don't know how I didn't think of it, but they are geniuses. When I first tasted it I did cry. I said a few tears from how delicious the cake was. I miss it every day. It is worth the price to me. The service was impeccable. They were all so sweet and nice and helped with any last minute accommodations. Now the ambience was nice. It was relaxing. It made me feel like a place when I was about to get the best food ever. I genuinely believe that this place changed my perspective on some foods which It did. I love this place every time I go to Durham I will go to this place. I will make it my mission to go to this place. This place to deserve so much more love and I really hope they bring one closer to my location, but for now it is a delicacy and a gift to myself whenever I go to Durham to taste their food. read more

Two of us came here for dinner on a week night. This is a stand alone building that has parking on all sides. There's even room in the back for trucks ( not semi) We ordered at the counter, then chose a booth in the dining room. There are both tables and booths so good for a large group. The seats at the booths are so comfortable! The tables were clean, as was the bathroom. The menu is on the wall by the front counter. There are chairs for the many people that order take out. You can also order by phone, and the phone rang quite a bit while we were there. Another thing not to miss is a huge case of bakery treats made by a local bakery. We got shrimp, oysters, potato salad, hush puppies, coleslaw and a sample of their fries. Wow, all were delicious and cooked perfectly. There's hot sauce, malt vinegar , salt, pepper and ketchup on the table. You ask for the cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Drinks are self serve. We finished it all off with a piece of cake that had 3 layers, two red velvet and one strawberry with great icing. Super nice employees, great food in a clean environment. I ordered the whole red snapper, which was excellent cooked, not too salty, which is the norm these days seems like. The hush puppies were excellent, potato salad very good. The green beans need a little help, but they were bearable. Definitely will go back again. read more

I have passed this place several times and finally decided to stop. I will say the entrees were good. We had the catfish, chicken tenders and wings - They were great! Golden and Crisp and Fresh!! The fish and chicken did not disappoint. However, the sides... I personally could have done with out; they were giving canned vegetables and Kraft Mac and cheese. Stick with fries they were great! Inexpensive menu items and plenty to choose from. I've tried the fried fish and Maryland style crab cakes (I do not recommend the crabcakes) with yams and cabbage. The crab cakes were breaded and fried and I did not like the seasoning. The fish and sides were really good. I would return to try other items such as the wings or cheesesteak. read more

The establishment is a rather rickety building that sits in a horrible spot when traffic is busy. If you aren't careful you'll roll right past it. This is a hole in the wall spot with easy parking and questionable cleanliness which makes you hope for great food. Unfortunately, it was a complete disappointment. I used to love this restaurant about ten years ago. Now....not so much. I had a large, fried whiting plate with yams and corn on the cob. I absolutely love JJ's! It's super convenient for me to grab on the way home. I've tried multiple items on the menu but my favorite item is the 2 combination plate. The flounder and jumbo shrimp... delicious! Im also a fan of their beef Italian sausages and wings. They have a ton of flavors for their wings, so tons of options for everyone. I love that it's a pork free restaurant, everyone is very nice, always clean, quick service. My only complaint is the short list of sides the have. I feel like they need more. I wouldn't consider myself a foodie, but I have eaten a lot of seafood in my lifetime. From our annual family fish fry, to seafood restaurants, to fish plate fundraisers, and a lot in between. I was excited that I'd finally made my way out to JJ's Fish and Chicken after hearing how good it was from a few people. Now that I've been, I'm gonna have to take those few people out to get some good seafood, because this wasn't it. I got a combination plate of fish and chicken because that's what the place is named. The coleslaw was pretty good. Fries were not hot. Chicken was okay but tough. The skin on the fish was tough. Maybe they need to dial the heat back on the fry-o-lator. Also, I ordered whiting, but I'm pretty sure I was served flounder (unless it was just terrible whiting). On the plus side, they do give you a big plate of food. Service was okay. Atmosphere was quite hole-in-the-wall-ish. Maybe I've got a different palate for seafood than a lot of people. (Lord knows I don't understand all the Sanitary Fish Market t-shirts I've seen--I haven't been there in 10 years and I still don't care to go back.) Maybe I ordered the wrong fish and chicken. Customer service is dead. The little Latino guy at the window must have been having a bad day because his energy was all wrong, But I let it go in the beginning. After sitting at the window for 25 minutes waiting for six wings, macaroni and cheese, and french fries I say thank you and pull off. I checked my bag for a fork so I can eat my macaroni and cheese on the way to the airport and I see no folk. I park, go inside and ask him if I can have some silverware. He looks at me as if he doesn't understand what I'm saying, so I point to the fork and say can I have a fork please. He looks at me as if I'm crazy and says" I guess you can have two". Wtf Who goes out of their way to make a customer feel stupid over a fork. So I proceeded to tell him that he never even "gave me one" fork. He yells I put it in your bag! Side note: at the order window this fool did not want to talk loud enough for me to here through his mask, but now he wants to raise his voice. Ok. He literally wanted to argue about giving me another plastic fork. I left him standing there arguing with himself as I walked out the door. Oh and the was a customer at the counter observing this foolishness. I shake it off, go in my bag to eat some fries and they are the soggiest fries I have ever had in my life. The Mac and cheese was tragic. Just noodles with a nasty bland cheese sauce. And the lemon pepper wings had good flavor but where dry. This stop was a waste of time, money, and energy. I've loved JJ Fish for eons ago a Chicago native. Imagine my surprise when I was introduced to JJs right here in Durham bc JJs was a Chicago staple, especially on the Southside.... As Chicago as Uno's, the Cubbies, the Sox, Sears Tower (yea, I said Searsl, the L and hot links! It's seafood it's always a standout and why I always drop in when I'm nearby. I always get fried "errthing" : jumbo shrimp, scallops, oysters, catfish, okra with lemon and cocktail sauce. And the hush puppies are AMAZEBALLS WITH REAL BUTTER!! Definitely a small, hole in the wall jewel in Durham, not far from 540 and RTP! If you like Mayflower, you'll love JJs and make sure you try their cakes too!! Go! Check it out!
