So I'm reading the other reviews and I'm like low-key confused. Everybody was hyping this place up on Instagram as well so I said, "say less" let me try it out. I am a wing aficionado so who better to try it than me. I get there and this place is interesting but we listen we don't judge. You walk in you go right up to the order section they take your order quickly. The service is decent. I would not say outstanding, but the food does come quickly. I asked the person behind the counter what was the most popular wing flavor and they recommended the honey garlic pepper. I got six wings with the shrimp fried rice. My friend got a Philly cheesesteak with french fries and six wings hot with the fried okra. I'm a start with the stuff that was not it. The okra had no flavor, but it was fried nicely. The french fries had a good seasoning on it, but they were not crispy and the seasoning was not consistent over all of the french fries. The Philly cheesesteak I did not try, but my friend said it was mid. The shrimp fried rice while having many large shrimp had little flavor, now we're gonna get into the Star of the show, the wings, the only reason I would give the wings 4.5 stars. The wings were fried perfectly. They are a good size and meaty. They gave everything they needed to give. The honey garlic pepper sauce was mid it wasn't terrible, but I wasn't getting a robust flavor that I would've wanted. Will I go back? Yes next time I wanna try the lemon pepper wings, and possibly one of the other hot flavors All in all it's probably some of the better wings I've had in the Durham area which is probably why it's getting so much clout. Wow. This is definitely a "don't judge a book by it's cover" type place. The number of times I passed by but never was tempted to try it. The food was amazing though. This spot is located in a shopping center and the store itself seems to be an empty grocery store (aisles of nothing in it) with the order counter to the left. Don't expect any type of ambience or a place to sit. People were coming in and out too so I'm glad we placed a phone order before we came because I assume it's popular. The wings are SO good, better than any wings chain here and listen to the reviews when they say they are worth the drive. You have the option to choose whole wings or ATL wings, we chose ATL wings. They have a long list of great flavors to choose from too. They also have multiple combinations to come with the wings which is great and makes the meal really filling. We got the cheesesteak with 6 ATL wings (honey mustard flavor) and fries. It was devoured. I got the 6 ATL wings and shrimp fried rice for myself and got the wings honey garlic pepper flavored. I also got 6 more honey bbq wings just to try. I am not even a lemon pepper or garlic parm fan but this honey garlic pepper was SO good I wish I could've switched out my other 6 barbecue wings for them. The fried rice was so delicious too and I'm not even into the fried rice and wings combo, just wanted to try it. The cheesesteak is soooooo good wow. I want to say it's a top 5 cheesesteak because they did everything right but it's just really small so you would need to order 2 if you only wanted a cheesesteak. It took one visit to determine this is the place to go for a delicious, budget friendly, takeout meal. I ordered the combo with wings and shrimp fried rice and the catfish nuggets. Everything was delicious. The rice was pretty standard with onion and fried egg. They were pretty generous with the shrimp that were cooked perfectly - not rubbery at all. I opted for garlic Parmesan flavor on my wings - they were freshly cooked and crispy. Although the sauce created a bit of a grease pool in the container, these wings were legit. The star of the order: catfish nuggets. This was THE BEST catfish I have ever had. The fish was moist with a crispy cornmeal exterior. It wasn't greasy at all, super fresh, light, flakey, perfectly seasoned. They included tartar sauce but it wasn't needed. The catfish nuggets were honestly one of the best dishes I have had in recent memory. The business appears family owned and operated by a very sweet Asian American family. I'd love to see more Asian dishes on their menu because I bet they'd be incredible. Orders came out fresh, hot and quickly. Please don't let the area or interior deter you from trying this wonderful food. Wings were great and crispy, nice selection of flavors, reasonably priced, and they have the option to do all drums or flats (flats OBVIOUSLY) for a minimal upcharge. We added on some catfish nuggets which my offspring demolished in the car before we even got home (one could argue my judgement at letting children eat fried fish in the car but after this year...) Try them out. I'd suggest you call it in because it's folks coming/going all through the day and night. I ordered the Garlic Parmesan wings and the honey garlic pepper and I was not let down the flavor was amazing and the chicken was cooked just right! The staff is friendly and during the pandemic they do wear masks and the kitchen staff wear gloves! They have clear lines marked in the floor for 6ft social distancing! I ordered 15 wings and after about 5 minutes my food was ready and there were several other people who had placed orders before me! So good!! Located in a strip mall, the inside looks like a food stand and convenience store in one. It's very casual and the pick up was a little confusing . I asked the people around and I guess they don't really have a consistent system for pick-up so I just waited in line with the others waiting on their call in order. I think it's a family owned business and the team seemed very busy. I went a during the odd hours between lunch and dinner and the phones were still ringing like crazy! The people working in the front were still very nice and I'm impressed that they included everything in my bag. The food itself was so good! My philly was a bit small but the flavor was there and it was definitely beef (someone else on here said they didn't think it was real chicken in theirs). I got the honey garlic pepper wings and I could use that sauce on everything! The skin was crispy and coated and the meat inside was seasoned and juicy. Fries were ok, not the star of the show but helped to fill me up. Really good price for the combo which also includes a fountain drink! They have Pepsi, not coke. I only review restaurants that are either highly overrated or exceptionally good. Tasty Stop is one of the latter, and is the quintessential hole in the wall with great food. Menu says wings are Atlanta Style. I think this means northern metro Atlanta, where many wing places are Asian-owned or managed (TS appears to be managed by Asian-Americans). Wings here are crispy like they should be, and sauces are superb, largely b/c they are less goopy than sauces at most places. 1/23/22, was the date that changed my life. Me & my grandmother were sick and tired of the small and disgusting wings from wing stop and the overpricing and long waits. Then I read the sign 'tasty stop', I decided to go in and I saw they made wings. I ordered the 10 piece wings ( 5 honey mustard & 5 lemon pepper) with a side of fries. The waiting time was 15 minutes. They got it to me for 10 minutes, 5 minutes of my life SAVED. When I opened the box it felt like when the main character opens a box that is so bright he has to cover his eyes. The wings were 10/10 from the separation paper to the smells and the size of the wings. I could barely hold 4 in my hands and I can grip a basketball. If you want an idea of how big they actually are. I would like to say that this store is one of the best things I have ever tasted and the service is one of the best things ever. Tasty stop is one of those stores that you only come around once a lifetime because of how great the and the serving of the food are. A Lot of people complain about how they charge an extra $2 for 10 wings, when not only do the wings taste better but they're twice the size of the average wings. Comparing Tasty stop to the wing stop. The wings are twice the size. So no, I wouldn't mind paying an extra 2 dollars for wings twice the average size. I've been hearing about how good Tasty Stop's wings are for a while now, and every time I pass it, I think about trying them. Well, after an incredibly disappointing visit to another wing spot in Durham the weekend before, I was left with a craving to fill the gaping hole the other place had given me. Now, I'm pretty critical when it comes to wings. As I've said before, I consider myself a wing connoisseur, and it's just one of those foods I wouldn't be happy with at an average or mediocre level. Tasty Stop itself is just short of a hole in the wall. It's in a strip mall, and you would probably never think to look there for food. When you walk in, you would think it was a small town convenience store, as there are oddly stocked isles of food products you can buy, and a counter with a menu above it to order from, but no seats for dine-in service. I ordered 15 wings very hot per the recommendation of the lady working the counter. I would say it's not that spicy, it's just hotter than Texas Pete, but the sauce was very delicious. In my opinion though, the sauce is only the smallest part of the equation, and a lot of wings have been incorrectly deemed great wings based on the sauce. But, to me, just because you put hot sauce on trash doesn't change the fact that it's still trash. What's key beyond the sauce is the wing quality and the texture. These wings weren't the disgustingly oversized kind that make you feel like you might as well drink a cup of growth hormone, and they weren't the ultra-petite wings that feel left over from the farm and ultimately dry out. They felt perfectly sized. The skin was as close to being crisp as hot, steaming take out wings stuffed into a box and driven home can be. The meat itself was cooked perfectly, and most importantly, not rubbery or oil logged like most other places' wings are. The only bad thing I would have to say is the french fries were very subpar and almost seemed like store-brand frozen fries that were an after thought, but it honestly wasn't a huge turn off to me, and they were fine to eat after I coated them liberally with the cajun seasoning they had on the counter. I was more focused on getting a good wing. The overall cost was very reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food, actually cheaper per wing than most places, especially the ones that think overpriced, bougie wings automatically equate to good food. I would recommend this place to others looking for an easy and tasty wing in North Durham, and I'll definitely be back again when I don't feel like making the wings myself. read more
