Jumbo shrimp. Baked potato.Hushpuppies & cole slaw.
cheryl H.

Food was outstanding. Huge portion & fresh & hot ...Great. friendly service. Where we were seated was right next to long tables in side room. As I was looking I was reminded of all the fun times we had here. My family, hubbys family & friends. Various parties I remembered we had started coming here 25 yrs ago when 1st opened. Even some of the same smiling hosts . I was then reminded I haven't been in 3 yrs 9 mo.since my hubby passed. Great memories! Not sure why but I am definitely back !!

White fish & fried clams.

We haven't been here in many, many years, so I read through some reviews, and we decided to give it a shot for lunch on Saturday. We were pleasantly surprised in all respects! The service was excellent! Very friendly waiter who was very attentive and made sure our drinks were filled and got anything else we might need. The food was delicious! Everything was lightly fried to perfection. My spouse had fried scallops that she said were perfect with fries. I had the white fish and clam strips with a baked potato. The fish was so flakey, and so many of the clam strips were much bigger than I've seen in years, plus no rubbery texture. Both entrees came with slaw. We both had leftovers. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated with a nautical theme throughout, including an actual boat serving as the desk where you pay when leaving. We were thrilled to find the Mayflower serving up such great seafood and plan on returning sooner rather than later. Honestly, I'm surprised there wasn't a line out the door!

Delicious seafood every time my husband & I visit this location -I had the fried flounder with baked potato combination. My food was hot & delicious- my husband had the trout & popcorn entree- equally so.Unique decorations with a good sized lighthouse & a fish hanging from the ceiling among other unique decor. Our server was friendly & efficient very attentive. This location is on 15-501 Durham NC - accessibility parking close to a sidewalk around the building.

Tuesday All-day Special - Fried Whitefish w/slaw, hushpuppy rings, baked potato, (sleeve of sour cream for potato.)

I ate at Mayflower for lunch and ordered the Tuesday All-day Special - Fried White Fish. It was exactly what I would expect for a fried fish plate. Good portions for the $10.49 price. You can order a baked potato (overcooked) instead of french fries! The hushpuppies were rings so there was lot more crispy surface to them than the nugget shape. The fish was coated in a light, thin batter, seasoned and crunchy. Some sections of fish meat were very thin, some sections were chunkier. The cooking oil tasted fresh and clean. I liked their coleslaw - barely any mayonnaise and seasoned just right. I prefer this Mayflower operation over some other places around Durham that offer fried fish plates. There was only 1 server covering the whole floor while I was eating in the dining room. He was friendly, efficient and observant. Ambience is family-casual - fine for dining alone, too low-brow for a first date. Air-conditioning was strong - afternoon temp was 94-degree outdoors in August. Not a fan of the sea-green paint on the walls, but at least the paint was in good condition.

Clean, well staffed, excellent service would highly recommend this location. Parking was great on side of building, handicap accessible was great as well. Does do take out too!

Where's the Crab Meat?
Janice C.

I spent a lot of time looking for even the tiniest of a shred of crab meat of the initial small bite who tasted of only breading and there was none present! The fried shrimp so tiny they must of been salad shrimp converted to fries shrimp. The only Senior Specials are boiled, nauseating. The waitress was very kind.

"Fresh local seafood"…read more I've come here a few times, so I was surprised to see I hadn't reviewed it! Saltbox started as a little shack near downtown but now occupies the place previously held by Shrimp Boats on 15-501 business between Guglhupf and Q-Shack. There are some outdoor picnic tables and several tables inside. I came most recently on a Saturday at 6:30pm. All the seafood here is super fresh, so the menu varies over time. I was excited this time to get crabcakes or scallops, but sadly, they ran out earlier in the day. Hence, I ended up with soft shelled crab platter (with potatoes and slaw), and one dining partner had a shrimp sandwich with the honey tots. The soft shelled crab was maybe the best I'd had, even though it looked a little odd-- super red and "squished". But it was VERY soft and flavorful. The potatoes and slaw were both excellent-- I liked the onions and peppers fried in with the potatoes, and the slaw was a nice vinegary rather than creamy slaw. I had one of my friend's tots, and WOW, those are good-- I'd get that next time. They loved their shrimp too-- I may go for that next time. Service was good-- we checked on our order at one point (see below), and the fellow remembered the name as well as being apologetic for the delay! The only negative-- it was maybe an hour from when we arrived 'til I got my platter. Some of that was the line, but a lot of it was just they were really busy and had a lot of orders (both dine-in and carry out). I probably wouldn't come again at that time of day, given the fewer options and long wait time. Still, EXCELLENT fresh fried seafood. Happy to give it 5 stars.

The cashier was tied up for a moment, but the chef stepped in, asked what I was ordering, and got started right away. That kind of awareness and teamwork goes a long way. I didn't dine in this time, but the space looked clean and really inviting. Definitely planning to sit down next time. Would come back for both the food and the service.

In the case of Succotash we feel we have found the holy grail... Friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff? check Homey and a little funky atmosphere? check cool soundtrack? check BUT what about the food? We first came for brunch... I had the 'Brisket and Grits'. It was a very tender brisket with cheesy, garlicky grits, scallions with fried egg. The best part? They drizzle some of the brisket gravy over the grits... Oh man this was delish. We got talking about South Louisiana food with our server and he told us they bring in Leidenheimers french bread from New Orleans for their po-boy's. What's the big deal? ...I'll tell you! The bakery was founded in 1896 and it is the ONLY bread that marks a true po-boy to New Orleans natives. Why? Because of it's unique texture. Their loaves have a pillowy soft interior and a crunchy crust that isn't found in most french breads. It's the gold standard for po-boys. So today, I came back to Succotash for an Oyster po-boy. And the Verdict? Five stars mon ami! Leidenheimers bread with a very generous amount of perfectly fried oysters. ...I like mine simple with just lettuce, tomato and a little hot sauce. This was I can honestly say, the very best oyster po-boy I have found outside of NOLA. ... so yeah, I've found a new home... thanks and a tip o' the hat to Chef Juan DiGiulio and the great staff he has brought together!

The ceviche was bright, fresh, and perfectly balanced, and the chips served alongside it were oh so good. The tortilla soup was the next course...and it was nicely spiced, comforting, and warming. As far as the cocktails go...the winter pearita was delightful--I could have happily had a few more of those. Dessert surprised me the most. I'm usually not a tiramisu person since I'm not big on coffee, but their Mexican chocolate tiramisu won me over. The coffee flavor wasn't overpowering at all and it had almost horchata-like vibes. Overall, the menu felt incredibly thoughtful, cohesive, and delicious from start to finish. The restaurant itself is super cute and perfect for a date night. That's the first thing you notice--plenty of parking. I had no trouble finding a spot on two separate visits this week. Inside, it's a cozy setup with a bar, table seating, and an outdoor patio area. It has that laid-back oyster shack feel. The patio looks like it could be dog-friendly, though I didn't confirm. The place is clean, and the staff are genuinely friendly across the board--welcoming without being overbearing. Food-wise, it delivers. On my first visit, I had steamed clams and steamed Gulf shrimp. Both were phenomenal. The clams were sweet and perfectly cooked, and the shrimp was just as impressive--simple, fresh, and done right. Second visit, I went a different route and ordered a hamburger--yes, at a seafood spot. Running keto, I skipped the bun, and it turned out to be a great call. Cooked exactly to order and full of flavor, it held its own against the seafood. Whether you're coming in for oysters on the half shell, fresh seafood, or even a solid burger, this place covers it. I ordered the Spicy Fra Diavolo which is a spicy tomato sauce/parmesan linguini pasta topped with calamari and shrimp. I also tried the fried seafood combination of local catfish and shrimp. The fried seafood combo was cooked to perfection. The catfish tasted fresh, without any of the fishy taste that catfish can sometimes have. The batter was crisp, while the fish stayed tender and juicy. The shrimp used for the fry were large and tasty. The pasta was the highlight of the meal, as generous heaps of shrimp and calamari paired well with the balanced flavor of the white/red sauce blend. I look forward to my next visit to Squid's. My partner and I weren't feeling up for a dine-in, so we decided to do a takeout. We ordered their spicy fra diavolo which was packed to the brim with calamari rings! If you don't believe me, take a look at my picture for proof. After 10 minutes of digging through the pasta, I still managed to find 10 calamari rings, lol. No complaints here though! Just surprised at how bountiful the calamari rings were for the pasta. The sauce wasn't spicy, despite the name stating so, and was sufficient to coat each strand of pasta noodle. As for our second dish, how can we NOT get fried seafood?! So, we decided to go for their combo for any two items. We were pleasantly impressed with the size of the battered catfish. It was MASSIVE! The shrimp, on the other hand, wasn't anything special. Quite small. Not really juicy. If calamari was an option for this combo, we'd definitely go for it! Seasoning was a little salty, but the breading was nice and crispy. Not burnt tasting or oily, and complimented well with the cocktail and tartar sauce. Fries were normal, but quite small in portion. For $30, I'd imagine either a little more fries if shrimps are only 6 pieces, along with a piece of catfish. Food was pretty good! I can't speak for service because I did take out, but it seemed okay. The inside was really clean and had lots of tables! Maybe I'll bring my friends the next time they come visit here.
