I enjoyed Sho Nuff Grande Shrimp. This included a large serving of 24 large shrimp, smoked sausage, corn and potatoes. This was so delicious. I really enjoyed this. The individuals I dined here with had flounder and catfish and they also enjoyed their food. I also tried the collards and that was also very good. The staff here were upbeat, professional and attentive The restaurant itself isn't fancy. Many areas can use more cleaning such as the paper towels holders on the tables and the bathroom trash can. I previously has good experiences here, and remember when this place didn't even have a storefront yet. Since then I've followed them wherever they went and have been such a loyal fan. Today however we planned a birthday at Shonuff at 4:30pm at their Broad Street restaurant. When we got there, it was closed despite signage and Google saying they should be open until 6pm. It was shocking and confusing. I understand it's the awkward time between Christmas and New Years where some businesses are taking a holiday break but no where did we see any change of hours notification, not on Google, not their website nor on Instagram. Very disappointing for the birthday girl and her guests that 1) traveled hours for this event and 2) were dressed for a seafood boil. So after visiting this empty and closed restaurant our party of 6 ended up going to the Durham food hall for seafood. To the store: please be sure to update signage. I really hate to give a 1 star review especially considering that I've had food from here before that was excellent. I ordered a whiting plate and while the first filet was cooked to perfection, the second one was skinny, full of bones and tough as if it had been refried. Even the hush puppies and fries tasted old. If I didn't live on the other side of town and it wasn't now closing time, I would have returned it. This seafood restaurant is unassuming, but man do they make delicious fried things! I got the fried shrimp and catfish plate, which also came with fries, hush puppies, and coleslaw. All the fried stuff was deliciously crispy without being greasy or feeling heavy. I'm not usually a crinkle fry person, but the generous seasoning on them made them extra flavorful. The catfish was generously sized and juicy, and the hush puppies were good as well, if with some unusual floral notes mixed in with the corn. The fried shrimp were the standout for me: succulent and sweet, perfectly cooked, with a lovely crunch from the breading. I usually don't eat shrimp tails, but these were also breaded and thus tasty enough for me to crunch up too. I would happily devour these shrimp all day. The service was prompt. You order at a register (or online ahead of time, if you planned better than I did), and it seems like most folks get their food to go. My plate came out in maybe 10 minutes? Fairly decent sized location with some indoor and outdoor seating with no frills if you needed something you have to go to the counter . I don't know if that's the norm but didn't mind . Staff were friendly .The menu has several delicious options. They seem to package everything in to go boxes even though if you are dining in. We ordered two platters OMG heaven ! I did a carry out order. There was parking available but it's limited. The inside was small but you could definitely eat in there if it's not packed. It's a street front so kinda chill. The customer service was not the best. I was barely greeted when I walked in. I was told my order had another 10-15 minutes but it came out 5 minutes later. The food was not expensive at all. The lemonade is super sweet but tasty. The flounder was seasoned well. I liked it. Didn't care for the fries as they looked like the seasoning was sprinkled on the top once it was put in the to go container. The customer service is really what took away from the visit honestly. However, I was disappointed to receive a load of butter in my meal tray. I'm a seafood lover, but I will not eat seafood that's floating in butter/margarine. The food was greasy, overcooked, bitter, dry, and had a weird taste, despite the presence of parsley flakes. Until dining at this restaurant, I do not recall ever wasting a lobster tail, crab legs, shrimp, corn, sausage, and potatoes. I discarded the meal, besides the boiled egg. First time in my life I've ever had to throw a crab leg cluster in the trash. I should've known something was off when I called and asked how long until the order would be ready and the nice woman said only 10mins. The crab leg meat was soggy and flavorless. The texture was way off and the meat wasn't fresh. It tasted like the crab legs sat in water all day. The boil was drowned in way too much butter. The shrimp was equally disappointing. Overall major disappointment and waste of money. I prefer quality over speed. I'm confused by all the positive reviews. I'm visiting from Baltimore and I know what good seafood tastes like. A sprinkle of parsley on food only makes it looks good. I would need to widen my back and lower my standards to return and enjoy this food. The owner, Michael Griffin, is making a lot of money from Black people and it really saddens me that a large portion of this community loves this trash. I'm giving a rating of two for the following reasons: The back of the house(chef) is excellent because of the flavor of the food. The cooks do an amazing job. The front of the house (clerks, service staff) were non existent. This restaurant is doing all the things that do impact their continuous success. Customer service is very important! There was no pleasant greeting when arriving! The front staff were not happy to serve! There are several restaurants that serve great tasting Seafood! We ordered (seafood boil with clusters of crab legs) for three. We did indicate when ordering that we were dining in. Most people know that this dish requires a crab leg cracker. It was not offered to us. We had to request it. There was a mixed crowd, dining in and taking out. The fried shrimp was hot and plenty. The hushpuppies had a nice flavor and they even added seasoning to the French fries. Ordered some bbq chicken wings too and they came out smoking hot!! I have been sitting here in disbelief for 2 hours thanks to the incredible unprofessionalism and crass rudeness that I just dealt with at Sho Nuff Seafood. I have been planning this huge dinner for 2 months at my home for a number of well known celebrities. I called the store 2 weeks ago to ask about their holiday hours as I needed to pick up my order on 12/23. The person who answered the phone told me that he didn't know and told me to check the website. The website gave me the 23rd as an ordering option - and so I placed an order for over $300 worth of seafood an entire week before pickup. Well, TODAY . . .less than 24 hours before my event, I receive a phone call from SNS. I'll paraphrase. "Yeah...we got your order but we'll gonna be closed when you want to pick it up so, OH WELL." So instead of blocking out that date on their end, they made the date available for orders, accepted my money, waited less than 24 hours to notify me that they'll be closed and then refunded my money unapologetically. To add salt to the wound, homeboy suggested that I pick up my order the day AFTER my event so that I could accommodate THEM. I had people fly into Raleigh today for a dinner tomorrow that HE wanted me to change to Saturday. Then when I started to become upset, he attempted to "tone" police me. What in the entire f*ck is going on out here with these businesses? Sho Nuff Seafood will never see another dime from me and I will encourage my celeb friends to use their influence to share my experience on their respective social media platforms. To make a human error is one thing - but to shrug your shoulders after you have ruined my event with no real effort for resolve is unfathomable. I've called around to several other establishments to place a catering order and guess what, it's TOO LATE. They have a fair amount of inside seating. All food is made order (at least the fried foods are). I ordered the catfish sandwich (came on a bun instead of the usual sliced white bread), and a side snow crab cluster and one of their flavored housemade lemonades (strawberry). Paid about $24. Which I thought was pretty decent for a seafood place, used to paying a arm and leg. Didn't wait long, food came out hot and fresh. The catfish nicely sized, actually thought it was 2 pieces at first. It was good, would definitely order it again as a meal with the sides that come with it. Though I only ordered the single crab cluster, it still came seasoned and tossed in the housemade garlic butter blend. Both were good. The lemonade wasn't what I was expecting at first sip, but not bad. Very rich and sweet. Would like to try some of other flavors, maybe the original lemonade itself. Family visiting from Atlanta wanted seafood, so we decided to try Sho Nuff since I hadn't been there since it moved to Broad Street. Unfortunately, we were really disappointed with what they served as "crab clusters." I wish I had taken a photo! What we got were small crab legs with no actual cluster or body--just legs, and not even large ones. It looked like they had been cut off. I had read the reviews and checked the public health ratings beforehand, thinking it would be a great spot to take my family. Another letdown was that they didn't provide crab forks. It took us too long to find this place that's right in the neighborhood! Something about it just looks closed. Fortunately, it's not! I think Sho Nuff is an excellent place to get fried seafood plates. The breading isn't excessive, the frying is light, the fish flavor comes through, and everything tastes fresh and tender. I would actually put Sho Nuff above Saltbox if I just want a really well done fried fish. The steamed seafood platters, well, depends on your taste. You have to really, and I mean, REALLY, like butter, and if you get their special garlic sauce, well, get ready to taste nothing else all day. It is not like whatever garlic sauce you're picturing. It's reddish and potent and actually spicy, more Cajun-adjacent. And it's good. But it's simply too much for me, especially since it's a pool that gets all over the corn and the potatoes and the sausage too. It drowns out any other flavor that might be lurking.
