My friend and I came on a Saturday evening for an early dinner. We were the only people in the shop and we were helped right away. The workers were friendly and eager to help which made the ordering process smooth. There were only a few tables indoors, so we sat at a table outside. I decided to build my own poke bowl, and my friend got a poke burrito. There was a good variety of protein and topping options, and for the price the bowl was decently sized. I usually like to get my sauce on the side rather than in the bowl, but when I asked for the sauce on the side the worker informed me that there would be an extra charge for that. Due to that, I decided to just get the sauce in the bowl, but I thought that was a bit strange since most other eateries do not charge extra for that. I picked hose tuna (comes premixed with onions and their house sauce) and salmon as my proteins. Salmon was bland and I would drop next time. I mixed in cucumber and mangos and the siracha aioli. Tried ZenFish for the first time today and OMG! I was blown away. I usually just pass because it's kind of tucked away by but decided to stop in and was greeted by Blake who was awesome. Came here for lunch with a friend. Easy to find and free street parking was not difficult either. I was a little surprised when we entered and there was absolutely no seating inside, fortunately it was a nice day and there were several tables under a covered walkway. I'm currently doing keto so I was happy to see the menu with nutritional information online so I could decide what I was going to get beforehand. I got the large because I wanted to try lots of proteins. I started with mixed greens and added: spicy tuna, ahi tuna, salmon, krab, and crawfish. I got lots of veggie toppings and half of an avocado for $1. The honey wasabi aioli was DELICOUS! Every thing was really fresh and I was pleased with the way everything tasted. Why only 3 stars then? I must say the scoops are TINY. Like scoops you would use to make chocolate chip cookies. I've had enough poke other places where they gave you MUCH more protein. (And didn't charge $1 for 1/2 an avocado...) So it was a disappointment...when I am in the mood for poke, I want ALL the raw fish. The krab and crawfish were not what I was expecting as they came as more of a "salad", as in chopped and mixed in mayo. And lastly, we were charged $2.59 for a can of La Croix...on good days I can almost buy a six pack for that amount. I usually am not one to leave a review, but the particularly amazing people at the location deserve it. I have been going here for three years and the owner is absolutely amazing. He has taken the time to talk to me, get to know me, memorize my order, and asks about my life every time I come in. Today, I ordered online and left a note in the margins for extra cucumber, which was very much given along with a note inside saying they hope they gave me enough. I cannot recommend this place more. I have never experienced a poke bowl before. Think of sushi, but instead of being wrapped up in sticky rice, the fillings are placed over your choice of salad greens, rice, or noodles. Not really being a fan of the cards or the full feeling that eating rice gives, I choose the salad base. To this you add proteins (I choose tuna, salmon, and the boiled shrimp. Over this, you get a sauce that is stirred into either/or the protein and base. I choose eel sauce for the fish and honey-wasabi I for the greens. The last series of choices involved toppings - everything from avocado to Gari (ガリ), that wonderful palate cleanser we know and love from our local sushi bar. read more

I am a BIG Zenfish gal. I don't make it over to Durham as often as I'd like (sad face) but Zenfish is usually somewhere I try to stop when I do go. Hell, I even make the drive solely for a poke bowl sometimes. So good! When you go to Zenfish, you're always greeted by friendly smiling faces waiting to serve you and willing to answer any questions you may have whether it's about their menu, the toppings, proteins, side items, you name it. The size of the bowls are perfect to fill you up for a meal, I usually order a large so I can have some left over for later. You can choose to order one of their signature bowls (grateful, kindness, courageous, compassion) or build your own. How cute are those names?? They even serve up mini bowls for the kiddos. You can tell that the owners of Zenfish really care about their business and live by their motto "do good, eat well." All of their to-go containers/plasticware are compostable and they source as much of their food as they can from local and family-owned farms. In recent months, they've begun selling cookies for which 100% of the proceeds get donated to a charity chosen by the employees/customers that rotates every month- they call it "cookies for a cause"! I'm so sad ZenFish was as bad as it was, because this is the closest poke to my house and I love poke - it's the meal I eat when nothing else sounds good. Unfortunately it was pretty awful. Neither the salmon or the tuna in my "kindness" bowl tasted fresh. Some pieces were better than others, but some were spit-out-level bad, and as a whole were threaded through with chewy connective tissue. The turmeric-pickled daikon tasted rotten - and this is coming from someone who drinks straight turmeric tea many mornings. Anything it touched went straight into the trash. Mango were tiny little tic-tac sized rectangles and were underripe. The rice was clumpy and dry. And I'm not sure what 'spicy house sauce' is but it wasn't detectable. And as the cherry on top, we were charged $14.95 instead of $12.95 for regular sized bowls. I'm not sure I can find one positive thing to say about it. read more

Yessss, poke for days! I went in to Zenfish during their soft opening and they did not disappoint. I love poke and am always on the hunt for a great poke spot. I feel like poke is just becoming popular in the Triangle, so Zenfish is opening at a great time. I like the concept, but if it is your first time eating poke you may be a bit overwhelmed with the selection. The employees were all friendly though and happy to help. I like that you can mix your proteins, I'm a tuna gal though and went with two scoops tuna, one scoop spicy tuna. Next time I'd definitely add some crab in there. I also really love that a lot of the ingredients are locally sourced, for example the micro greens come from a woman owned local farm. Let's talk sauces, their options are no joke. I really enjoyed the house sauce as well as the ginger miso. The space is small so if you have a big group or really want to eat there I'd just keep that in mind. There is one large communal table in the middle then some bar spots throughout the restaurant. More of a grab and go spot than a sit and catch up with everyone you know spot. This place gets 5 stars for me mostly because I can't believe I can get such high quality food from a quick-serve restaurant - I'm so impressed! The space is small and you might miss it if you're not looking closely. There are maybe 10 seats inside and a few more on the partially underground front stoop. It gets pretty crowded if there's five or more people in line. If I lived around this area I would be coming here for takeout constantly. I had the bowl option that is half-greens-half-rice. After your base, you can pick up to three meat options! I went with one scoop of salmon and two scoops of "house" tuna, which is marinated with I believe soy sauce, onions, cilantro, and maybe some other seasonings. It's super tasty and I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't quite sure what kind of fish they want. If you're averse to raw fish they offer cooked shrimp, crawfish, crab, sweet potato, and tofu. Then, so. many. toppings. You can get as many as you want, as much as you'd like, with only the avocado costing a bit extra (1/4 an avocado for I believe $1). You can see from my picture that I went all-in with the toppings. I'd highly recommend the pickled radish and furikake for some unique additions. The representative was really friendly and patient with us while my sister and I read through all of their different options to craft a bowl to share together. We got the regular poke bowl with three scoops of salmon. The salmon was super fresh and incredibly delicious. They have more specialty ingredients than other poke places I've been before and I was really excited to try them out. We packed our bowl with cucumbers, green onion, micro greens, pickled onions, mango and avocado. I really like that you were also able to specify the amount of sauce you wanted, something I hadn't seen done at other poke places I've visited. That comes with 3 proteins, and I was really excited about that because it seemed like a really good deal for ~$11. I have become a HUGE fan of Poke Bowls and have been checking out as many options in the area as possible. If you don't know what Poke is, think of it as sushi in a bowl. You can customize the ingredients, the sauces, the vegetables and more. ZenFish Poke Bar is my FAVORITE Poke restaurant. There are a number of signatures options (preselected combinations of goodness) or you can build your own (which is my preference). First step is picking a size Regular (3 scoops) or Large (5 scoops) for your protein. Next step is selecting your base (white rice, quinoa, organic salad, zucchini noodles or half-half). Then, you select your proteins (house tuna, ahi tuna, spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, scallop, shrimp, Krab, octopus, crawfish, sweet potato or tofu). Then, you select your mix-ins (green onions, sweet onions, cucumber, jalapeños or mangos). Next, you select your sauce(s) (house sauce, spicy house sauce, truffle ponzu, miso ginger, sriracha aioli, honey wasabi aioli, or eel sauce). Anyone who has eaten at Chipotle knows how ordering at these places usually go - a choice of base (white or brown rice, salad greens, or zucchini noodles for an additional cost) and the employee then follows up asking you for your choice of protein. Average tasting bowls. There was so much rice that that was about all to taste. Sauce was only mixed with the protein and not mixed in with the rest of the bowl, so it was enough for the protein scoops but I didn't taste it anywhere else. The "three scoops" of protein were so small, the three added up to what I would have thought was one. The toppings were also scooped out so small, I had to ask for 2-3 scoops of each topping and it still wasn't enough to compete with the amount of rice they scooped out. I think less rice and it would've tasted fine. I always get a little nervous when I try a friend's restaurant. I want to wholeheartedly love and support their endeavors! I felt relieved and silly, when I fell in love with my first sushi burrito, served up by Durham's thoughtful poké purveyor. It's a tiny restaurant with so many careful details.
