I had high hopes for 92 chicken and they unfortunately fell short for me in some respects. I saw a social media post about the onion chicken and just had to try it out. The restaurant is clean and simple with TVs playing kpop. It wasn't too crowded when we went so service was quick. We ordered the sweet onion chicken, green onion soy garlic chicken, curly fries, and red spicy boneless chicken. Everything tasted fresh fried and came out with gloves to keep our hands clean. I was surprised to see that they did not offer complimentary water, and we had to buy bottles for $2 apiece instead. :/ The curly fries were delicious and crisp, not much to say about them! The sweet onion chicken was delicious! The onion-Mayo mix on top pairing perfectly with the crispy h Chicken. Super messy to eat but totally worth the indignity. Much of the flavor came from the dressing of the sweet onion, but not the chicken itself. Each set was around $18-22, which is around $5 more expensive than other places nearby. For sure the family running the business is Korean but I believe it's part of a chain. I order up some KFC drums and fries and it's solid but feels like just basic fried chicken with some commercial sauces on top. I think this business probably does a solid take-out, delivery option but for dine-in you can certainly do better. This place has got to be one of my favorite places to go to in Durham for fried chicken. The place reminds me of Bonchon, which is another chain that sells Korean-style fried chickens. The order and pickup process was smooth, and our food held up pretty decently after a 20 minute car ride back home. The Original Fried Chicken was crispy and juicy and probably our favorite. So, I like Korean Fried Chicken the few other times that I tried it which would be Soo Cafe in Raleigh and Chicken Bee in Durham. I heard of a new place that opened recently and was familiar with the shopping center since it is where Kokyu used to be. As other reviews mention, they haven't invested too much in new signage and still have the old name on the front (Vit Goel). They do have a banner with the new name anyway. I ordered takeout and went with 10 wings of honey garlic. The wings were delicious, maybe a bit on the small side. Also, they tasted like candied chicken, so next time I might get something with more heat and less sweet. They offer plenty of other flavors including original, soy garlic, garlic spicy, red hot pepper, and curry chicken. You can order 10-piece wings (like I did), 10-piece tenders, 5-piece drumsticks, half chicken, and whole chicken. Additionally, they offer sweet onion chicken and spring onion chicken in the same quantities. The price point for 10 wings was fairly high ($22 with tax and tip). I did enjoy the wings a lot and they also give you small containers of slaw, pickled radish(daikon), and kimchee. I will come back again to 92 chicken since they are close by and I want to try their other flavors of KFC. Come get you some KFC folks! By that I mean some Korean Fried Chicken of course! This place used to be Vit Goel Tofu and they still have the sign on their storefront (the new name hangs on a banner right below the sign) but they're purely a Korean chicken place now with the crispy goodness as their main staple. The change is pretty recent like a few months back. The owners didn't change which are still two sweet friendly adjummas (elder aunties) - one in their sixties and the other in their eighties. The two of them run the entire restaurant and they told us their story of why they changed the theme and concept of the restaurant. Apparently the main reason is inflation. With Vit Goel Tofu they would buy all their ingredients themselves for all the dishes. With the prices doubling, sometimes tripling that made things difficult. 92 Chicken is a franchise so there's no need to do all the purchasing of the individual ingredients yourself - corporate sends them everything. This is much easier for 2 elder ladies to manage and less time consuming with having to cook less variety of different dishes. Totally understandable. We ordered the soy garlic wings for 16 bucks and the garlic spicy drumsticks for 15 bucks. Absolutely delicious and super super crispy as one would expect from Korean fried chicken. Both the flavors were amazing and I enjoyed each and every succulent bite. The garlic spicy flavor had a real nice kick to it. The drumsticks were huge - like triple the size of the wings. They also give bon chons (Korean side dishes) as part of the meal when you dine in which is a bonus. The acidity of the bon chons made for a perfect counterbalance against the sweetness of the sauce on the chicken. Service was on point and the adjummas would consistently come to refill our drinks and give us more bon chon once finished. Over the course of our meal we would notice many people coming into the restaurant thinking it was still Vit Goel serving traditional Korean dishes only to be disappointed and walk out the door. This happened at least 4 times while we were there which made us a little sad to see so many potential customers walk out. We were pretty much the only ones there dining in. Other than that there were 2 takeout orders. Overall, fantastic experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend giving this place a visit if you are a fan of Korean fried chicken or even just fried chicken in general. I ordered a 10 pc wing with red hot pepper sauce- it was sweet and spicy enough to make my nose run (IN LOVE!). The crisp was there on some pieces and others were softer and saucier. I also noticed that while some wings were on the smaller side, they tossed in a few extra to make up for it. The curly fries were good, but cooled down quickly. I do wonder about the GrubHub time estimate because I was given a wide time range for pick up (15-35 mins) so I really wasn't sure how quickly to get there. Went into the restaurant and asked to purchase takeout as I have heard of their restaurant on the internet. Was given the menu and seated to decide what to purchase. Asked if they could provide a sample of the soy garlic as we will be buying the half garlic spicy. Was recommended to buy two half order of both seasonings which I did not after experiencing a price markup as I was asking about flavors of items on the menu. Reasons for being very disappointed as the price of the half order was increased to the price of a wing order. View the attached price menu with each half order prices marked through and changed in front of me. They stated that corporate made a mistake in pricing. Also they stated that the half order may be 6 or 8 pieces instead of 7 because of the way the chicken had been cut. The order would be ready in 10 minutes. Could chicken be cooked fresh that fast? For increase of $2, I am not going to be disappointed, if the chicken is excellent but was disappointed because of concerns with the quality of the order. 1. Unpacking the order from a box which would regularly hold 3 pieces at other places there are 7 small pieces but 2 pieces are back cut pieces from thigh portions (view the pictures of exposed glands on the backbone) , 1 side rib piece off a breast cut, 1 breast meat cut 1/4 sized, 1 thigh meat cut 1/2 sized, 1 wing, and a 1 drumstick. These were cuts of chicken downsized and individual parts (back and rib) of chicken which are not served detached in other establishments. 2. Chicken has smell of rancid meat when cutting into the chicken back pieces and other downsized pieces. 3. Chicken meat was dry as if under a light lamp. Makes me feel like I was served waste pieces in order to penny pinch to extremely increase profit margin. read more
